Yeldon Decommitment Raises Questions
I don't know T.J. Yeldon. To be honest, I've followed very little of his prep career. I'm not someone that follows closely the ups and downs of recruiting. I've never bought into the hype of unproven 18 year-old kids.
The Daphne, Alabama running back is obviously a very good high school football player. Whether he's the second coming of Bo Jackson is way premature.
What's not premature is to question the motives of his change of heart from Auburn to Alabama. Last night, only days after saying he was firmly in Auburn's camp, Yeldon mysteriously had a change of heart.
Rather than call Auburn coaches and notify them of his decision, his high school coach, Glenn Vickery put out a press release on behalf of Yeldon that said in part...
"I have a lot of respect for Auburn, the coaches, and all of the people there, but at the end of the day I feel like the University of Alabama is the best situation and fit for me and my family. I am 100 percent confident with my final decision. I feel great about it and I'm excited to get started."
Conveniently, the flip-flop happened on the eve of a recruiting dead period. How successful do you think Auburn coaches were in reaching him last night? Today he can't be bothered.
Yeldon committed to Auburn back in June. This season he rushed for 2,193 yards and 31 touchdowns. He's a five-star recruit according to 247 Sports.com. The site has him listed as the 16th ranked player nationally and the number two running back in this year's class.
He was expected to enroll at Auburn in January. Speaking a week ago to Auburn Undercover, Yeldon said he was looking forward to getting a head start by enrolling early. "I can get bigger, learn the playbook and get early playing time when we play Clemson," said Yeldon.
Maybe T.J. Yeldon did have a change of heart. We are talking about a kid who shaves twice a week - tops. That won't stop the talk in the coming days of whether there was more to the story than just a change of heart.
If Yeldon would rather wear crimson-and-white instead of playing at Auburn, then so be it. Good luck and good riddance. If there's more to the story, Auburn people need to be vigilant.
I'm not insinuating that Alabama cheated in gaining Yeldon's commitment. I do question the timing of the change. I do question the way it happened. Granted, Auburn did recently lose its offensive coordinator, but so did Alabama.
I have no idea what tax bracket his parents are in or what kind of home they own. But like so many Alabama boosters did during Cam Newton's tenure, Auburn people need to pay close attention to any lifestyle changes Yeldon or his family experience in the coming years.
Let's give them the benefit of the doubt. They are likely good people with a gifted son. However, if any inconsistencies emerge, Auburn needs to pounce and be vocal in doing it.
Recruiting is messy and more times than not, can get dirty. There's a smell to this story that raises questions. They may be easily answered or not.
We'll all be watching.

This is BS...
If you don’t want to insinuate, that’s fine. I’ll just say it. T.J. Yeldon and family are being paid $400k for him to suit up at UAT. He never intended on coming to Auburn. This was a setup all along. As Zeke put it on Twitter… “FUTJ”.
Jeez, glad no one is accusing zeke of being a mature young man...but he probably said what we're all thinking.

I wonder how Zeke is going to feel when Chizik tells him to lose his Twitter account
Love his fire, but the kid is going to be a nightmare on campus if this keeps up.
Of course Chizik will make sure it won’t.
I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.
Before everyone gets all worked up..
There have been instances of these kids changing their commitments for ever. In recent years, since we started ranking their potential with the recruiting services, and their pay sites.
Add the increase in attention these very young, and mostly immature kids are now getting because of guys like me, the news of one having a change of heart comes as more of a shock.
T.J. is a good player, I can not speak for his character, because I do not know him personally. We will always keep a close eye on Alabama, and it has been increasingly necessary to do so, after the last three years.

There are two schools of thought here:
The first is that there is something fishy going on again in Tuscalooser. Why did the kid have a bama email already? Why did he wait until the day before the period to dump us? This seems to happen more often than not… Can anyone say Gadsen II? Or what about Calloway gate?? I guess that is the perks for a successful program.
The second is a man has to be as good as his word. You tell me you are going to do something then you don’t do it… well, I don’t care how old you are… you ain’t worth squat in my book. Good riddance is right.
AU does have a decent stable of backs IF Dyer stays on… if he doesn’t come back… well, we got an unproven backfield. And I don’t care for that. Hell, right now we don’t even know the offense we are running. And for the sunshine pumpers… THIS IS A BIG DEAL.
Either way AU’s recruiting class just took a big hit. I attribute this to lack of coordinators. The bad news is that if Chizik waits too much longer… AU is going to have some more defections. You know the old addage: if you can’t beat them….join them.
The only positive for us is that bama only has so many spots left.
WDE
Let me remind you guys...
Craig Sanders switched from Bama to us, and they were howling about it.

Not the same thing...
Not the same thing at all KB. This is WAY different. No, not because it’s one of ours switching. The manner in which it was done was crap and you know it. You dang well know it. This whole thing was a setup.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

You can’t really believe that all Nick Saban does is sit around and rely on 17-18 yr old kids to play tricks on Auburn.
No way that happens.!
Yeldon had a change of heart, and he was so messed up in his thinking, that had his high school coach release a press statement. According to published reports, Yeldon, nor his coach even called the Auburn coaches.
Was he swayed to change with lots of pressure? Sure he was, all the 4 and 5 star athletes receive that kind of pressure with each recruiting trip from every coach out there.
Trust me when I tell you this, in the grand scheme of all things Auburn football, this is just a speed bump. Don’t go giving this more than it actually is.

It's not a speed bump KB it's not.
The kid is as good as you get. Write it down, he’ll be a hell of a ball player. No, this was a set up KB and you’ll never, never change my mind on that. You’d have a better chance making a pig fly but I appreciate the sentiment. My mind is made up and it will NEVER change in this matter.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
I have more of a problem with ...
the timing of thee switch rather than the switch itself. Kids change their mind all the time and that will not change. But a change right at the dead period when Auburn can’t try and sway him back is bad, but the hold it puts on us recruiting other RB’s in his place is what concerns me more. I do think this was orchestrated as far as the timing of the change. This one smells all the way from Tuscaloser.
While I think this is understandable....Yeldon is still a big steaming pile of crap.
Ahhhh, the Bear lives.
I will always understand a decommitment of any 18 year old, especially when the OC he was going to play for leaves and the school he plans on attending just happens to be losing its stud running back……BUT you also don’t go flapping your gums about how committed you are to Auburn. That just shows an ENORMOUS lack of character AND if you are a Bama fans, really makes you wonder what you had to go to OBTAIN the services of a person with such little character. Wait, actually you don’t need to wander at all. I mean isn’t this what led everybody to cry CAM GOT PAID!! And don’t give me “why wouldn’t he want to go to Bama??” crap. Yes, there are plenty of reasons to go to Bama, but if that was the case why commit to Auburn in the first place?
Personally I don’t want anybody at Auburn that doensn’t want to be here and it bothers me that we would recruit a guy like this….but I also know that is part of the business.
Anyway…good luck at Bama TJ. I’m sure you and Saban will get along famously . It would have been nice to have him, but we have Mason, McCalebb, Blakely and now a spot for another kid. Whats more important is that we get big uglies to open up holes for those guys. As Dyer has shown, you can be an outstanding running back, but if you run into a brick wall after you get the ball, your 40 time doesn’t mean jack squat.
I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.
Down Hill Slide
Why is the Troll so worried about Auburn. He needs to worry about winning a game that they really should not be in. Lost your divison and not going to the SEC championship game two year in a row sounds like a down hill slide to me ! In addition you also lost an OC and will lose all your best players to the NFL and graduation! if you can not make the SEC game with all that talent, how far down to you think Bammer will slide next year? We need to ban these trolls just like they would us if we were on their site!
That being said....
I do hate this. There is a very good chance that Dyer isn’t coming back. I never knew this until somebody told me, but this is not the first time Dyer has had drug troubles. They started in junior high the first time he got busted.
Here in Arkansas, it’s been known for a while that he was a potential problem child.
I sure hope the kid can pull his head out of his ass and get his shit together. It’s just such an unbelievable shame to see so much raw talent pissed away. I mean, for the love of God, if he has even a moderately decent season next year, he’s a damn millionaire. I just never have been able to understand how someone can knowingly throw away a future in professional football for dope.
God I hope the kid pulls it together. Not just for our football program, but for his life. If he doesn’t he’ll just be another gangbanger with past glory stories. Another tragic tale of wasted youth.
I'm more concerned that it's now 11 days since our DC 'resigned' and, yet, we don't have a replacement.
As much as Yeldon look like a stud (on the field, not character-wise), remember the hullabaloo about Marcus Lattimore? Yeah, well over 3 games, Marcus only gained 183 yards on the ground and 2 TD’s against Auburn’s D (source: cfbstats.com). Let’s hope that when we see Mr. Yeldon on the field, that the Defense can lock him down too.
Frankly, it doesn’t matter who we recruit, we need coaches to coach them up (for lack of better phrasing). The fact that we don’t have a DC or an OC, does not project stability. And you think that we, the fans, are impatient, ’member your patience level at 18?

I'm not trying to fan the flames or anything...
but switches and decommits go both ways. As KB pointed out, Craig Sanders did the reverse. Calloway had been a firm commit to Bama for over a year before his saga started last year. It’s also possible that kids “commit” so early to reduce the number of calls they receive during the recruiting period. I’m sure it stings, but Auburn will be ok. Good luck vs Virginia.
Over It
I am over worrying about one recruit who may make it or not at the college level. Hopefully Gene is focused on not worrying about anything Bammer and all about Auburn getting back to the level that we belong. I also hope he is focused on a weight and strength program for our players. With a good new D.C and O.C we will generate excitement in recruting and we will have lots of talent. By next years iron bowl do not be to surprised if Auburn is 9-2 at Denny Bryant!
Definately... Auburn has recruited well the last few years...
If you beat us next year, more power to you and congrats. I expect Auburn to be better next year, and Bama to drop off a little. Wouldn’t surprise me at all.
NO...
this kid is…I CAN’T SAY WHAT I WANT TO SAY…I just hope we kill you guys. I hate y’all more than ever now! I don’t like Alabama. I hope you guys get caught for this crap. I hope you go down and lose your football program.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
I hope we will be caught
at clean recruiting. If we have not learned our lessons from the past, we deserve to go down. The same for Auburn.
There are Alabama fans who wanted to see Auburn get the death penalty. So, if we’re the elder brother, does that make us somewhat like Cain? Then there are fans who want to use realignment to end the rivalry.
I lived in Toledo three years. The Michigan-Ohio State rivalry is great—but not the Iron Bowl. I lived in Texas 12 years, graduating from the real UT. The rivalry with A&M was great—but not the Iron Bowl. Unfortunately, it’s dead.
This is greatest rivalry. But it is just a game. It’s interesting how fans can take it more seriously than the players. I usually like reading your comments. But right now you and others are contributing to a meltdown thread.

MY comments?
If that’s the case I appreciate your sincere comment. Look, I will admit to you readily I am in meltdown mode. The lack of coordinators after my coach tells me he’s got a plan in place already bothers me. The Stoops saga bothers me. This was Auburn getting played by Alabama and Nick Saban. Look, for me this is much worse than losing to you guys one year. This guy will be the difference maker in at least two Iron Bowls. He was our one kid in the state of Alabama that we had. Weirdly, he goes to Pensecola and switches after he meets the same people that have brought in some big time recruits to Alabama over the years. So, forgive my cynicism but I’m not sure it’s unfounded. I honestly hope you guys are doing it cleanly. If that’s the case, then it gives me hope in this broken thing we call recruiting. There is so much you get to where you over look it until it’s done in your back yard in a special way. By the way, Robot Chicken is an awesome show!
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
I can understand the coordinator thing.
I’ll meltdown if we lose more coordinators before NOLA. And I hope you finally get a DC worthy of being in the SEC. Auburn has produced great defenses.
I also believe we should have two signing periods. I also believe both Saban and Chizik are phenomenal recruiters. I want to believe both are clean. For one, this is my favorite sport. I may eventually like American baseball again. Not yet.
But in today ’s environment—UM, OSU, PSU, LSU, both USC’s, GT, Tennessee, Miami —that Saban and Chizik would stupid or brazen. And for these programs cheating would be overkill. We may have 25 spots, but how many do we offer? 50? 75? before going to our B list?
I don’t like it when we lose a recruit to Auburn. Even worse is a flip-flop to Auburn. Worst is one of our RB’s transferring as a walk-on. But I’d rather keep the talent in-state, so if not Bama, then Auburn. Not Tennessee, Florida State, LSU. Of course, we can cherry pick from other states, but I’m biased.
Anyway, this rivalry should be fun.

Whats so funny about this.....and all these commit/decommit stories
Is that there is NOTHING more undpredicatable than an 18yr old stud athlete. Most of these big time recruits are kids that have big time issues….see Dyer…..and get all this love and fanfare when they commit and most of them end up being average players or they never make it at all. Its not getting worked up about it. The only thing I don’t care for is how he JUST said how he was committed to Auburn, and it may have turned off other recruits who might have been looking at Auburn. Thats kind of a double screw job.
As far as losing his talent? Its what you do with those kids when they get on campus that makes the difference. We are going to get our fair share of good players and Alabma will rake its great players. If they didn’t get Yeldon, it would be somebody else.
I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.
NCAA will ignore Bama
This article is well written, but the NCAA will do nothing. Sure TJ is already sporting a new Yukon with some jacked up rims. The NCAA ignored Mark Ingram’s, CJ’s, Trent’s vehicles. Along with Trent’s new house, clothes, etc. Too much money being made in Tuscaloosa and the NCAA does not want any part of enforcing the rules with Nicky.
We need to hope and pray Chizik gets the OC and DC positions filled quickly so we can focus on football at AU and forget what the deep pockets are doing over there….

I’d imagine hIs recruiting tactics were to insinuate that the reason Gus and Roof left in the middle of the night is because we are fixin’ to get hammered by the NCAA or some such nonsense. Time we poached one from them though-I doubt it will happen this year (at least until we get th coordinators sorted out)
Actually,
he probably argued that they left because they were expecting Auburn to hit a rough stretch. After all, why would a guy who was linked to AQ-level positions last year suddenly jump ship to Arkansas State? That’s what I would have argued anyway.

Great article.....it's entirity should be a must read.....below is a positive note:
5. Do you see who Auburn already has in the backfield? Michael Dyer (maybe), Onterrio McCalebb, Tre Mason, Mike Blakely, Corey Grant, and Jovon Robinson (incoming 4-star). I’m not going to act like Yeldon wouldn’t have added or even topped this list in a year or so, but Auburn’s running back corps is pretty strong as it is. If Dyer, for whatever reason, does not return, that will obviously make the loss of Yeldon sting a little worse, but then again, O-Mac, Tre La Soul, B-lake (I just made that up), O-town Killa, and Rob-dawg (made that one up too) are a fine bunch. I wouldn’t be too worried about not having anything with Yeldon not being back there. We’re good.

I wouldn’t lose a wink of sleep over Yeldon. If it was a 5 Star LB recruit I would be seriously pissed but not this.
And for all you folks who are crying conspiracy and set up. What if it was? What if Saban got together with this kid and worked up this elaborate scheme to commit to Auburn so that he would be the jewel of the class and then he would switch commitments late so we can’t recruit another running back to hurt our recruiting class?
If that is what happened what are we going to do? Try and do the same thing to Bama? Thats just silly and stupid, and you know how that would work out. Getting all bent out of shape and crying about it just entertains the Turds. …
The best medicine for Mr Yeldon and Coach Saban is to get the best recruits we can…..cleanly….coach’em up, and go out on the field next year and kick their ass. If they want to play games and cheat….let’em, they are shining representatives of that fine university.

but y’all are about to look really hypocritical if it’s true that Robert Leff has flipped from USM.

Nope not hypocritical in the least...
Leff didn’t have reporters asking him every day where he was going. Next, Alabama and Auburn are arch rivals all right? That means the game changes completely when these two schools are competing against each other. Furthermore, Yeldon has been SOLIDLY committed to Auburn until he flipped. Not to be forgotten, he had his coach make the announcement for him. He didn’t even have the guys to do it himself. Leff did not purposefully commit to USM and then flip to Auburn so that he could hurt USM as much as possible when he flipped. So, your postulation that we will look hypocritical with the turn about of Robert Leff is uninformed at best and just flat out stupidity at worst. Bryan Matthews has stated several times he believes that Yeldon’s flip of his commitment to Auburn was orchestrated from the very beginning.
The way he did it at the dead period was cold and to be honest well played. In addition to that, Auburn is without either an offensive coordinator or a defensive coordinator. Therefore, the strike at Auburn’s perception was a complete success perpetrated by the Alabama coaching staff. For that, I have to tip my hat and say good job guys you got us that time. Still, we don’t look the least bit hypocritical when we gladly accept the flip of Robert Leff when there is no orchestrated attack or all too convenient timing.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
I'm not capable of the mental gymnastics
you’re displaying. Robert Leff is not a man of his word. just like leff. and neither is your staff.
BTW, the reason y’all won’t get ron cooper is because you recruited trovon reed at WR instead of corner. POOR TALENT EVALUATIONS!

Heavens, yes
What with USM being a heated in-state rivalry with gamesmanship in play.
Oh, wait…..
