Around the Plains... Monday Musings
Good Monday to you. If there's such a thing as the dog days of winter, we're dead in the middle of it. This past weekend marked the first time since August that we've gone with no football on television. September feels a long ways away on this cold morning...
Auburn haters were hit with another setback over the weekend. While many of the writers and talking heads in Birmingham and elsewhere keep hope alive that the NCAA will find wrong doing by Auburn in the Cam Newton case, it appears more and more that's unlikely to happen.
NCAA president Mark Emmert said Saturday there still appears to be no evidence of wrong doing on Auburn's part.
"There is no evidence that money changed hands and there is no evidence that Auburn University had anything to do with it," Emmert said. "We wound up making a decision that felt to many people morally objectionable, but that fit the facts and the circumstances. We find ourselves making those kinds of judgment calls often."
Those comments make it seem unlikely that we'll see another Reggie Bush type episode with Newton...
There's been a lot of debate about Auburn sandwiching Samford between Georgia and Alabama on next year's football schedule. Many traditionalists say it ruins the history of Amen Corner.
Count me among those who have no problem with it. I always thought playing Georgia and Alabama back-to-back was a decided disadvantage. Having what amounts to off weeks before Georgia and Alabama should help charge the batteries for the home stretch...
Saturday's home basketball win over Miss State was by far the biggest of Tony Barbee's Auburn career. In front of a near full house, the Tigers battled back from 19 points down with a little more than 10 minutes left on the clock to take a 65-62 win over the Bulldogs.
The win doubled Barbee's expected win total in the SEC this season. I say that only half jokingly. Sadly, grabbing two victories with this team may be his best coaching job yet.
Count me among those who still believe in Barbee. There's no question he was the right hire. Auburn will compete for an SEC title within the next four years. Write it down...
With an expected warm up across the South this week, it's the perfect time to start baseball season. Major league pitchers and catchers report to camp today and more importantly, Auburn opens its 2011 season on Friday at home against Arkansas State.
The defending SEC Western Division Champions enter the season with high expectations. The Tigers return 19 letterman including six starters in the field and nine pitchers.
Auburn enters Friday's opener ranked 25th nationally by Collegiate Baseball. They are picked second in the SEC West behind LSU (15th nationally). Florida and Vanderbilt are expected to be the class of the conference, with the Gators sitting at preseason number two nationally and the Commodores ranked fifth.
Auburn will need to get off to a fast start to match last year's win total of 43 games, the seventh-most in school history. The team's 131 home runs and .591 slugging percentage led the nation.
It's hard to believe John Pawlowski is already in his third season on the Plains.
For Auburn to be successful again, he says some familiar faces need to step up.
When I look at our lineup, we have some experience back," Pawlowski says. "You're looking at guys like Tony Caldwell (C), who is back and played a good bit for us last year, and obviously Kevin Patterson (1B), (Justin) Hargett (2B), Casey McElroy (SS), Justin Fradejas (CF) and Creede Simpson (RF) all did a great job for us last year.
"I think we probably have about nine or 10 guys or so that saw a lot of at-bats last year that I think are really going to help us."
Pawlowski is quick to point out that last season's success doesn't guarantee anything this year.
"Just because we did what we did last year doesn't mean it is going to be a lot easier this year," he says. "It is going to be even tougher. We talked about going back-to-back to the SEC Tournament. We are going to have to work at it and these guys understand that."
First pitch is set for 6 pm CT Friday from Hitchcock Field. Auburn faces Virginia on Saturday at 1 pm CT and UAB on Sunday at 3 pm CT. It should be perfect weather for baseball with temperatures reaching 70 degrees all three days.

It is a great time to be an Auburn Tiger
that is for sure. It’s a lovely day here on the plains. Hope everybody else is having a great day.

Good read Jay
I agree that the Newton case is dead except in the minds of a few haters – ie. NY Times and bama delusionals.
Despite their record,I have been enjoying watching Barbee’s Tigers. I definitely agree, he will get it done.
As for baseball, I can’t wait. I’ll be there for the first pitch Friday. And Fly13 is right “It is a great time to be an Auburn Tiger.”

Hope that you have a great trip down there this weekend.
I bet it is lovely and warm there….

This entire Cam/BCSNC is fascinating to me. From where does the Auburn hate
spring? Taking trips to other sites and seeing the time and effort devoted to Auburn hatred is amazing. Anyone willing to tackle a post about possible explanations? It is truly remarkable and unlike anything I have ever seen. At first, I thought I was just being paranoid, the old “Auburn is underdog” deal. After a friend alerted me to sites such as Tigerdroppings (the only one I’m going to mention!) I am not so sure. Many of you have probably read all of these way before I, but now I get what some of you have been sayin’.
It’s kinda freaky.
The whole thing was brought forward by UA...
If you want to see the guy peddling the story harder than anyone else, you’ve got to look at Thayer Evans. From there, just take a look at Pete Thamel. Now, ESPN just writes sensationalism, and last season they got great ratings from making Auburn and Cam Newton look like terrible entities. However, what does Thayer Evans have against AU? Furthermore, why are Pete Thamel and Thayer Evans coming out about the recruiting of Clowny at South Carolina? Why weren’t they blowing their horns about Cyrus and Brent Calloway? Call me a paranoid conspiracy theorist all you want. Still, the information is there and it’s hard to disprove what I’m saying. Why does Thayer Evans hate Auburn like he does? What reason does he have to go after our beloved institution so hard?
Oh, I’m also waiting for somebody like first and thom to come out here and say the Cam Newton thing is far from over. Even though, this is the THIRD time the NCAA has looked and not found any evidence of money being transferred from one place to another. You guys are going to have to start coming to reality. Auburn won the national championship and it’s looking more and more like it’s going to stay that way much to you guys’ chagrin. That’s just tough tittie said the kitty but the milk sure was good.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Be careful what you say!
we wouldn’t want to devastate any bama fans that are desperately clinging to the hope that in 3-5 years this championship won’t exist. After all, that’s all that they have left to hope for after this disappointment of a football season for them, where they wholeheartedly expected to repeat as National Champions. Rough life.

I hope by all means...
Ha, that they know I said it. I hate them. I hate their grass, I hate their colors, and I hate their carpet. I can’t make it any plainer than that. With that said, I hate LSU even more which is why you see me go after Jonno so hard. The Bamers have a sad life that live like that. I don’t think the championship is going anywhere sorry to disappoint them. You too First and Thom.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
What are you talking about
Bama won the national championship this year. They win every year, right?
I'll point out that Mark Emmert's quote was modified
“There was no evidence that money had changed hands and there was no evidence that Auburn University had anything to do with it. We would[sic] up making a decision that felt to many people morally objectionable, but that fit the facts and the circumstances.
The emphasis on the corrected words is mine. I’m not implying that the Cam stuff is still ongoing. I’m just saying that the quote used to justify it’s end was potentially taken out of context. He seems to have been referring to why the NCAA ruled in December that Cam was eligible. As for whether or not the investigation ended there, I’m in no position to make a claim, so I won’t.
I think that is really reaching. It reminds me of the "It depends on the definition of
what ‘is’ is" -
If you don’t see how the different tenses change the meaning of what was said then this discussion was dead before it started.
Again, I’m not saying that Auburn is still being investigated. I’m only saying that the quote in question does not imply that the “case appears to finally be dead”. The prolonged silence out of the media in terms of new evidence in the case is a better indicator that nothing is coming down the line.
The media is a poor indication of the truth...
just saying. And once again…AU was never under investigation…not then not now……why is it so difficult to get that through some peoples thick heads.
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.
Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
Because of the interviews in this article, which happened the week before Christmas… after Cam had been reinstated by the NCAA.
NCAA investigators have interviewed two Atlanta-area men about whether they were asked to or did deliver money to the father of Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton in connection with repairs to Cecil Newton Sr.’s church in Newnan, Ga.
Look, I’m not trying to get into a debate about whether or not Auburn is or was under investigation by the NCAA. I was merely trying to point out that the Mark Emmert’s quote was modified and potentially being used out of context.
You have the appearance of a bammer who is wishing the worst and less than objective.....
in otherwords similar to the typical Finescum mouthbreathing bammer….this may not be the case you may truly have a brain but to nitpick about the context of a comment by someone in an article is speculative on either side…….and again the media missed the boat so badly on this whole debaucle and so many so called facts or even supposed conversations that were quoted, reported, or otherwise insinuated turned out to be less than substantiated or false that to follow them is folly. But if it gets you through your day to hold onto hope that AU will somehow be implicated then so be it but don’t expect alot of undestanding from us.
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.
Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
I can’t deny being a “bammer”, but I don’t stay awake at night wondering if Auburn is going to keep their championship. Furthermore I certainly wouldn’t come to an Auburn web site seeking acceptance or understanding in that hope.
I’ll agree that the national media seems to have a vendetta against Auburn this season. I can also see how this would make Auburn fans feel like they can’t trust the media. I don’t fault you guys for that at all.
The only thing that bothered me enough to leave a comment (which I don’t do very often over here), is that when I searched for Mark Emmert’s comment it was different in all the other articles that included the quote.
I apologize if I’ve ruffled any feathers. I’ll leave it alone now.
Folks kill me with overstatement on blogs - "dead before it started"??
You are nitpicking – both his quote and the prolonged silence say that to me.
It's clear and evident....
Unless you have a vested interest in the situation, that there NEVER WAS AN INVESTIGATION
into any facet of Auburn University, athletics or otherwise.
Not the FBI, not the NCAA, not the IRS, not Interpol, not CIA, not even Matlock took a look at Auburn.
Maybe, just maybe that will sink in at some point.

It's over and deep down everyone, no matter which fan base, knows it
It is all they have left since we won the Natty. The Nick Fairley dirty play business is over but they still rail about it. How else would they explain a lowly program like Auburn winning the National Championship? We are not LSU, or UAT, UF or UGA, Nattys are reserved just for them. We must have done something illegal to win it. How can Auburn win? Dang sarcasm font still isn’t working.
I just hope they erect the Saban statue/altar/shrine before he leaves
But, Kool, I don't think it will. The absence of logic and clear thinking is astounding.
I admit I have an Auburn bias, but good grief, I NEVER read an ATQ post, for example, without some other fan base (admittedly, mostly Bams – but sometimes others) insulting Auburn. What changed? I have talked to myriad fans over the years about the pleasant atmosphere at AU. I remember fondly when GaTech came yearly and how we loved the Tech fans – hanging out with them was such fun. Now, it seems the entire atmosphere has changed in the perception of other fan bases. They make fun of anytime CGC speaks of God, for example – imo they purposely misinterpret him (because, surely, they can’t be that stupid!).
It’s a strange occurence and it seems to simple to say it’s because Bama fans hate us….
It is plain and sime a feeling of superiority on their part.
I just hope they erect the Saban statue/altar/shrine before he leaves
Your absolutely correct...
nothing will change. When your program is on top, it becomes the target, period!
No matter which program it is.
Auburn is blueblood, but the rest of the country is sick of hearing about the SEC. It was ok when you talked about the oldest rivalry in the south, but not MNC’s.
Thus the hatred=jealousy.

ok so I must be daft KB,
but I don’t know what you would call what we went through this season if not an investigation. The eligibility of one of OUR players was brought into question and it most definitely was looked into if not “investigated.”. If you want to make that statement, please qualify it because I am a fan and what you’re saying does not make sense to me. It doesn’t seem quite as clear and evident to me as it does to you so enlighten me.
The investigation was of MSU...
and the Newtons……AU volunteered phone records of all AD employees and the Newtons gave up phone and bank records as well as testimony. An official investigation into AU’s recruitment of Newton was never opened because of the lack of a paper trail and/or reason to believe wrong doing took place on AU’s behalf…..MSU however is staring down the barrel of the NCAA and could face significant punishment from the NCAA because of the actions of Kenny Rogers, John Bond, and Bill Bell. UF could face serious legal action from the Newtons and federal privacy issues. AU was not under investigation by the NCAA at any time……the media however tried like hell to convict AU in the court of public opinion (which is by no means fair or balanced).
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.
Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
Here's the deal.......
Cecil Newton willing offered to be investigated pertaining to the recruitment of his son. Admittedly after having talked with MSU reps about a pay for play scheme.
MSU reported the incident to the SEC offices, who then notified the NCAA and Auburn.
Auburn then began their own investigation, and notified the NCAA and the SEC.
After Auburn’s investigation the findings were made known to the SEC and NCAA offices.
Auburn had deemed itself blameless in the matter, and sought advice from the NCAA.
The NCAA could not give Auburn a definitive answer until it had completed it’s investigation of Cecil Newton’s finances.
Once Cecil Newton’s finances had clearly shown no questionable financial income, then the NCAA and Auburn put in motion the events around naming Cam ineligible, and then being reinstated by the NCAA.
Auburn had zero involvement in the pay for play scheme, and thus was clear of any wrong doing.
Cecil Newton, and the supposed representatives of MSU had committed an illegal act, by Federal standards, plus broke several NCAA regulations, just having their discussions of pay for play. Thus creating the scandal, which most people would associate with Auburn University, but actually had nothing to do with Auburn.
I hope I cleared this up for you. If not I apologize.
Come and join me at http://trackemtigers.com
that sums it up.....
better than my attempt.
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.
Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
I think between the two of us...
We may have explained the actual scenario. I hope that eliminates any Auburn fans’ fear of ever losing the MNC Coaches Trophy.

I didn't mean to re-hash the Newton argument!! I am sick of it - no offense please.
My point is that everyone is motivated by something. For example, I spend long hours shopping and cooking for the objective of having a healthy family. Chik-fil-A spends millions on cow commercials so we’ll eat chicken. And so on.
What I can’t wrap my brain around is the motivation of both the national media and many national fanbases who do appear to be so hostile to Auburn. Heck, I understand UAT, UGA, etc. But Boise fans? Cal fans? WTF?
I read too many of those crazy websites over the weekend.
Most of that sentiment would have been directed at any SEC school....
That just my opinion, but I have read some of the other sites, and the way ESPN blew the Cam situation out of proportion, ESPN blows the SEC is the “dominant” conference in college football out of proportion.
Come and join me at http://trackemtigers.com
Wow...
We even have a troll hoping that Cam is still deemed ineligible. Let it go-it’s over. Where are you first and thom??? I so want to rub it in.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Not a troll
I don’t hope anything bad for anybody. Sorry to burst your bubble.
But there is this article from al.com about a continuing investigation.
I give up on predicting the whims of the NCAA.
But I’m glad you miss me.
by first and thom on Feb 16, 2011 8:39 AM CST up reply actions
That article and several others are 100% correct in the fact that....
The NCAA is still investigating the incident with regards to Cam’s recruitment. It is squarely targeted on MSU’s boosters, and their claims. Until some kind of evidence were to be turned up that would incriminate Auburn, there is not, and has not been any investigation by the NCAA directed at AU.
Go the NCAA site and read Mr. Emmert’s full statement, and then decide for yourself.
Come and join me at http://trackemtigers.com
Like I said...
I’m done trying to figure out what the NCAA means when it says what it says. I can’t make heads or tails of it. And, even if I were confident that I understand what Emmert’s words meant, I am not convinced that he is the most forthcoming guy. Accordingly, you won’t hear me spouting anything about an ongoing investigation, because I don’t know. All I said above was that the News reported an ongoing investigation. The process is completely opaque to me. I don’t understand how anybody can speak with certainty about what’s happening because I haven’t seen any evidence that anybody knows.
That said, I sincerely hope that Auburn comes out unscathed from whatever process may be ongoing or has already concluded. I also hope that the fuddled mess of this last season brings a strong impetus for clarification to the NCAA rules and to the transparency of the NCAA’s process.
Again, best of luck.

Auburn hatred
As far as the source of the Auburn hatred on the internet, I have my own theory. You have a supremely talented athlete of the highest order involved in a scandal at a school that has had a history of NCAA infractions. It’s a juicy story, admit it.
Add into that the incredible ease with which journalists can track interest in a story so they write as much as they can about it. ESPN, CBS, Foxsports, and all the rest can print anything they want, true or not, with no accountability. So long as the ad space gets sold, they will keep doing it.
I’m not claiming that people are too stupid to see the truth, my claim is that they don’t want to look. It makes things simpler to say “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” and assume guilt. It’s also an incredibly easy position to defend, what with all the information readily available. People like to argue, they like to be right, and they don’t like it when somebody is doing better than them. And of course Auburn was better than everyone this year, so we have the big target on us and there’s tons of ammo loaded up and ready to fire.
We may have taken some shots, but we’re going to be fine. Take pride in our success despite the hate. This is what it’s like on top and we are the one who gets talked about.
I have a feeling it has something to do with the arrogance of some news reporters who
are supremely frustrated that they can find nothing else substantive to report. It may be as simple as that.
I truly believe some of it has to do with....
Our coach not being afraid to thank GOD for his blessings toward Auburn on national TV. Plus we talk about having the right fit at Auburn, Auburn man, etc….
When someone who has an agenda gets a bug up their butt about some part of you, they will seek to find more to despise, and tear down.
Come and join me at http://trackemtigers.com
Also, CGC
is not the first outwardly religious coach in the SEC. Mark Richt built the early years at Georgia out of fire and brimstone…..
