Toomer's Incident Puts Auburn-Alabama Rivalry In Uncharted Waters (Updated)
With news that the famed oaks at Toomer's Corner have been poisoned and likely will die, all eyes now turn toward Tuscaloosa. Early reports point to a caller of The Paul Finebaum Radio Show, who bragged on air last month that he'd poisoned the trees.
Whatever the individual responsible was hoping to achieve has backfired and cast a shadow on Alabama that's indeed dark and grim. Auburn people are hurting today. A rivalry that has reestablished itself in recent years as the best in college football now has a real problem.
A threshold has been crossed that may be hard to reel back in anytime soon. Often times, hurt turns to anger. I imagine the anger phase for Auburn people will come fast.
It's important that cool heads prevail. One person's actions don't reflect an entire institution. Some of my best friends are Alabama graduates. They are sick and embarrassed over what has happened.
I would feel the same if someone vandalized Denny Chimes or any other Alabama landmark. I've said it before; one of the things that makes Auburn great is its rivalry with Alabama. I know most of them feel the same way.
I hope those considering retaliation will think twice. It may feel right today, but it will make you just as guilty and worthless as the person responsible for Toomer's Corner.
Forgiveness may never be possible. But remember, not all Alabama fans are responsible. Let's hope and pray that the actions of one sick individual doesn't ratchet up the heat more on a rivalry that has become too intense for anyone's good.
Update 9:10 a.m. - WTVM Television in Columbus, Georgia is reporting that an arrest has been made in the poisoning of the oaks at Toomer's Corner.
According to the story, "Auburn police arrested Harvey Almorn Updyke, 62, from Dadeville, AL. He will be charged with criminal mischief for applying an herbicide at Toomer's Corner."
Lee County law enforcement officials are holding a press conference at 10:30 a.m. CT to discuss updates to the case.

don't make this uglier than it is
This has turned from a somewhat friendly (albeit abnormally intense) rivalry to an all out war, and to be honest, it was a little obnoxious even before this atrocity. Don’t get me wrong, I love the rivalry. It is a blast to be able to be so intense about football, but today it went from being fun to being upsetting. It’s not going to stop if we do something stupid to retaliate, it’ll only intensify everything and make it worse. We saw today what one stupid person can do to take things out of hand. Please don’t be that asshole.
I'm an Auburn fan because I go to Auburn. You're a Bama fan because you went to Walmart.

Let the Feds...
….handle it, man. They’ll get the phone records, there’s the Toomer’s cam, plus this guy bragged on Finebaum. That means he likely bragged to others. Someone will probably turn him in. We lock these sorts of nuts up in this country, and that’s what’ll happen here. It’s a stupid thing to go to prison for, I can tell you that!
…..Meanwhile, if anyone thinks killing a couple of trees will stop the Auburn spirit, they are dead wrong. We’re one of the best Ag schools in the country. There’ll be a landscape job in the works, and we’ll be amazed at how good it is. Mark my words.

It was good to hear...
that they are proceeding as if they can save the trees, but from what I have been told by friends with horticulture degrees from AU…it is nearly impossible.
This tears at me, I am so sick to my stomach.

Be the bigger man
We can stop it and be better because of it. We all thought it was funny when there were stickers and jerseys being taped to Bear’s statue and rye grass with the IB score. I know those were little gigs that didn’t do permanent damage and it’s too bad it probably pissed someone off enough to respond in this manner.

Nothing good can come from retaliation
It will only show that we’re no better. The best retaliation is to express disappointment and move on with our heads up.
I feel you man
I really really do. I would hate it if someone did something like this to UGA or the Hedges, but the fact that you feel like you MUST do something says you might be a little too invested in your football team.
That would probably be why
I only replied to the one who was.
Yeah...
we are invested, and are proud of our investment.

Have to be careful...
Escalation on both sides could lead to recruits avoiding both schools to steer clear of the mess this might become.
I listened to the clip on Finebaum. Chilling – the guy clearly seemed to know it was against the law and didn’t care. He sounded like he was one step away from killing someone.
i heard it also ... for the 2nd time. it was exactly that... chilling.
this guy was pumped up on adrenaline… excited to share the news of what he had done.
i was surprised when i heard it live how quickly Finebaum was off on another topic. he dismissed it as a joke… but there was no joking in that guy’s voice.
i wish i could say i am surprised. i think in the back of my head, i was just wanting him to be a lunatic liar getting off on the surprise call of the year.

Careful Sparkey...
no bammer I know condones this and in no way does the dispicable action speak for the majority of Bammers. It is one thing to dislike the fanbase as a fanbase but I also know that it’s just a sport and not a life or death matter…..regardless if it sometimes feels that way.
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.
Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
it isn't the bammers that you know, or i know... that should be worried about.
it is my assertion that there are an abundance of bama fans that are not alums of UA. this i think is a relevant point to make, because they, as a result, may lack the institution connection and community of institution connection. they are rogue fans. they are fringe in a way,… which has always had to me a kind of militia feel to it.
i am not saying they are a militia, but they are not grounded, they are hanging on to the fandom in a sincere, uncontrollable manner… owning their brand sometimes as if there was a war going on.
humanity is a foreign concept for those… and they have proven themselves dangerous to me more than once before.
i don’t think anybody is trying to say that this act is somehow supported by the majority… but i am not naive either. i don’t like being taken advantage of. i suspect the majority of bama fans are clapping on this one. silently for some, and quite unapologetically loud for others.
you do it and you wipe it up.

I don’t think the majority are clapping silently or otherwise…….this is one of those embarrassing things that the majority wish didn’t happen as it reflects extremely poorly on them.

I am a Bama fan and believe me when I say I feel nothing but disgust and shame for this. Jabs and jokes and passion are what make this rivalry great, but when passion turns to poison ( no pun intended ) it makes a mockery of whats so great about this constant rivalry. We are not porud in any way of this stupid man. Again I am sorry to you all ! how could ANYONE possibly step out and guess what sentiment the whole of bama nation has…
no. it can’t be done. i wish it were that easy.

Nope
but at the same time buddy… neither are you ( the spokesperson for Auburn ). Honestly I dont think anything I say to you at this point from hating on all us tiders right now… but hey thats fine, you are welcome to hate on me all you want. However for those that DO have an open mind to what some of us on the other side think…. I apologize to them for this, its sick.
that is all.
Over on RBR you have Kleph- who pretty much every artilce admits to so much hate to auburn… even he is pissed at the whole situation. Its a rivalry…. over institutions of education who both happen to have incredbile football teams. The rivalry should never over take the fact that its just that … football and schools. So what this 1 person did is unacceptable on every level.
Again like I said- you are more than welcome to take my apologies and do with it what you may… but for those who are willing to hear me.. im sorry

appreciate what you are saying... brings AU together... nothing can break the Auburn spirit... yeah! i'm on board.
what i am not on board with is letting this act get pealed off as a singular aberation attached to a out of control psycho.
we all know that this is a bigger issue than the act of 1 person. please, lets stop conveniently riding around it in fairytale hopscotch.
i consider fandom a brilliant freedom. i don’t refer to my Auburn connect as a communal “Auburn Nation”… but it is a family… it is a community.
we have to slide these fringe folks off their presumed allegiance (to the death, and beyond) and reconnect to reality. there is only one Nation.

My fondest memories from Auburn are from Toomer’s Corner. I’d like to see UA students ban together and buy new trees for you guys as a sign of goodwill. I know you can’t replace the originals and the memories they represent, but hopefully something can be done to ease the tension.
Now if everyone would get off the Auburn website.. I need to submit a paper and blackboard is going SLOW.

Why is it???
That Auburn has to be one to stop with everything. We have to let them do it and let it go?? I get it, I just think the University of Alabama should give something in return. I’m furious right now. This hurts pretty bad.I take what I said about the Cam Newton jersey on the statue of Bear Bryant being tasteless. I doubt anybody remembers it, but I said then it was classless and needed to stop there. Now this? I am angry, but I also remember many of my friends are Alabama fans. But, I’d love to take a swing at the guy who actually did this.

Everyone's replaying the call from Al from Dadeville on the news...
I didnt hear it originally because I hate Fbaum and refuse to listen to his program because I think it celebrates nuts just like Al. What was Fbaum’s reaction to the caller? Did he or anyone else even think this guy was serious at the time?
Someone that would do permanant damage to a 100+ year old tree regardless of its role in a football program needs to be made an example of. If ANY football program means so much to you that you would destroy priceless property over it then you need your head examined and have it done in prison please.

This may be way to soon
But something has to be done with the wood from those trees. Sell pieces (i.e. Berlin Wall*) and do something GREAT with the proceeds. A scholarship fund perhaps, A sculpture of some sort, park benches…. Something. They just can’t be removed and replaced.
*I am no way comparing those trees to the symbol of the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe.
That John Denver is full of sh@t.-
Not too soon
It’s happening whether we like it or not, so we may as well begin brainstorming and getting ideas out there. I’d like to have a picture of Toomer’s in a frame made from the oak. Maybe they could remake the bar in the drugstore with an oak top. Hardwood floors in J&M or the Arena. I’m sure more will hit me later.

ugh, just got in from a long hard day at work,
and this is the first thing i see when i log on. I know it may sound dramatic, but it actually make me feel nauseous I am so, so sorry that this has happened. Not sure if I am argreer or sadder. I like others have expressed hope the culprit is found and punished severely. My only hope that somehow, some way, this will serve to wake up both fanbases to the great tradition of these programs and this rivaly and renew a deep respect between the two. I just wish there was something that could be done to erase this situation.

I heard this guy AL live. there was no BS in his voice...only hate of the scariest kind.
and Finebaum laughed.
i usually have plenty, but i am completely speachless. Auburn doesn’t deserve this. i love Auburn, and everything in it. those trees were a part of me, a part of the family.
i don’t consider this just an attack on a few trees. i consider this an attack on the family. an invasion of privacy. a violation of a sacred place in and about the community.
this is so much more than football.
you do it and you wipe it up.
I too am sad but:
I have an offspring of the tree in my yard and it is 6 feet tall right now. It was rolled 14 times this year with pride. Hundreds of these seedlings were sold and the spirit of the tree lives in a lot of yards. If you have one, roll it, if you don’t buy one from the Forestry Dept. and start rolling. The Auburn Spirit is from within and cannot be taken away by a deranged individual. That being said, I hope the culprit is found, prosecuted, and ridiculed by everyone.
I just hope they erect the Saban statue/altar/shrine before he leaves
As an Alabama fan and student,
I’m entirely disgusted that someone would do this, as is everyone else I’ve talked to on campus. I really hate how poorly this reflects on my school and the UA community. My brother who goes to Auburn and have a lot of respect for the school. I hope the authorities find the responsible person and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.
i don't want bama fans to apologize... you're only trying to make yourselves out to be better humans than you really are.
i know that all UA fans and students are bad folk, i learned a long time ago that it takes both sides to create this kind of rift…
still, concern yourself with the kind of tone you’ve got here…
“I really hate how poorly this reflects on my school and the UA community”,… that statement, given the circumstances… doesn’t help Auburn fans right now. is just what i would expect. can you see the selfish place this came from?
“I hope the authorities find the responsible person and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.” wow. that helps. who really cares if this guy is found or not? i am not going to think of that douche bag at all…that is the entire reason behind this stupid shit.
attention.

just like… Al from dadeville’s actions don’t reflect the whole of bama nation.
just because we are recieving a few apologies here and there does NOT turn my feelings around. again, i don’t need anyone to worry about me, … in this type of situation, everyone should have the freedom to feel the way they feel. period.
not unlike my own grandfather’s death… everyone in my family reacted in their own way, and there should be freedom to connect with their own unique reaction/feelings. everyone is due that time.

Good grief.
I wasn’t trying to convince you to feel one way or the other. IMO, the apologies are heartfelt and genuine. That’s all that I was trying to say-other than, I understand that we all grieve in our own ways. Who am I to tell anyone how to feel or grieve over something that is so personal? That should have been evident in my last sentence—-if it wasn’t, then I apologize.

I believe “Al from Dadeville” will be caught. This is a restricted chemical and there are records of who buys it and how much. You’re supposed to detail exactly how much you use and where, etc. Not only that, but most of the people in the Ag business who would have access to this have strong Auburn ties. Someone will talk.
Just don’t think he’s going to prison for killing trees, because that won’t happen. The law will not be able to serve true justice for this. Karma’s a bitch though and if the guy has an echo of sense left in his poisoned brain, he should leave the state before the wrong idiot finds him and pays him back.
I heard about it,
Now I’ve read about it and I still can’t fathom it. It’s beyond anything I would have ever thought any one would do. I’m sad and mad. But I will be glad when they catch the SOB.
As an avid University of Alabama fanatic...
I couldn’t agree with you more, Jay, and I hope the immature prick who pulled such a childish stunt, fries for it. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a little rival razz every now and again, but a stunt like this completely blows the rivalry way too far out of context.
My mother always tells me, “What goes around, comes around”, and that’s a maxim everyone should live by.
F-U and ROLL TIDE ROLL!
Auburn Family - can't take that away
I’m infuriated that some low life loser would potentially destroy such a special symbol / tradition that we all hold dear. The reality is that this individual more than likely has never attended a UAT game outside of Legion Field. I believe that Auburn fans are a class above Bama fans, I think we must absolutely take the high road and stay above the fray. This hurts, but the Auburn Family is just that….Family….living on the Gulf Coast I’ve seen numerous friends lose their homes and possessions in hurricanes, but they always seem to bounce back, often stronger than before because Family is what really counts….and that’s what makes Auburn so great – it’s the people, the experience, the memories – YES Toomers Corner is a big part of that – as I write I can’t stop thinking about Iron Bowl 1997 – my personal favorite Toomers moment. What hurts me the most is knowing that if my daughters go to Auburn – only 2 and 5 at present, they may not have the same experience of rolling Toomers after games, but i expect for generations to come, whether the oaks live or die, whether or not we change up the uniforms, or even the mascots, the experience of Auburn and the Auburn Family will remain, because that is beyond symbols and traditions, my hope is that Family will only grow stronger when facing adversity and loss. WAR EAGLE!
p.s. someone get Green Peace on AL from Dadeville’s trail…..and get PETA to check on his pets, he sounds like he may be slightly disturbed….

Im appalled right now
To be a Bama fan. This is pitiful and disgusting and infuriating. I am truly sorry and hope that they catch this disgusting individual who did this.
rtr and i mean that with nothing but love tigers
Damn...
I can’t really imagine what me reaction would be if someone permanently destroyed a part of Tennessee’s tradition out of spite generated from a freaking game.
I do honestly believe that upon hearing the caller to Finebaum there were probably more than a few Alabama fans whose first instinct was, “I wish I had thought of that”… but those are the folks who actually take his show seriously. He’s the football version of some folks I’ll leave unnamed as to avoid a fight, and he attracts the same kinds of myopic screwballs who are more likely to resort to vandalism and violence than actually thinking… which this fellow will have plenty of time to do when he’s sitting in jail for the next year or two, and likely even afterwards when he is unable to find a job because of the felony conviction. The dumbass pretty much eliminated any ability to defend himself by confessing to the act over the radio… if the act itself didn’t prove what an idiot he is, the confession has to.
Just don’t turn this into some back and forth out of a desire for revenge… yeah, I’m sure I’d be incredibly pissed… but these kinds of things can turn really nasty really fast. Don’t egg on the screwballs, otherwise some innocent people could literally get hurt. There are people out there who would become legitimately violent over their football team if it got bad enough, and the last thing we need is someone getting physically hurt over a football rivalry.
Deal with the screwball, plant some trees, and beat the everliving dogshit out of their football team next year.
When their fans hit our players
with all sorts of stuff and temporarily blinded one of our players it had all gotten out of hand then. Now, it’s just getting worse from there. I don’t plan on retaliating and I don’t condone anything like that. With that said, I’m furious and I don’t want to see anything about UA for a day or two. I know it’s not all of them, but that still sticks in my mind.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

Seriously, this rivalry has degenerated so much over the last years. Perhaps it’s time to lessen the heat.

i think this is a ridiculous idea for me. just my opinion.
i wonder if you could make an argument to play the game at a neutral site for a while though.
thoughts on that?

buddy, I would hate to see it go, but too many people have forgotton that it is
just a game. People (I won’t even call them “fans”) have carried this rivalry too far for too long. See Sparkey’s comment above – I could go on and on about specific incidents I have personally witnessed at this game. I won’t though. When lives are in jeopardy it’s time to do something. Waiting until something even more horrible than this to happen before we do something is not worth it. Playing football against Bama is just not that important. Neutral field doesn’t make that big a difference. You wouldn’t believe some of the things that went on at Legion Field for example.
Laughable
to call Legion field neutral !… I mean I’m more than willing to admit that legion field is BDS jr. For a real neutral field it would need to be played at a rival SEC school or ATL. Not saying that would fix the whole scenario … but hey if we cant act like adults, whats the point of it all.

i think that is a decent idea. nashville... hate to ake our business out of state, but i can't imagine anywhere else that would avoid the controversy.
while i asked the question of a ‘neutral field’ option for Auburn/bama iron bowl… i almost immediately thought of that concept being counterproductive at best…or a fuel the fire concept at worst.
as it is, both schools and pride are at stake when it is your turn to host the Iron Bowl… a neutral site would effectively remove that hosting responsibility.
what if that pride (whatever is left) is gone, and the fan #s(at a neutral site) swing in favor for the fringe fans (rabid non-alumni types) rather than those tied direct to the institution.
that… could be a scenario where the avg. fan at the iron bowl is more ‘adult’ than student,… good thing, or bad thing? as long as adults like AL are able to walk and exist, neutral field or not, we’re going to have ‘accidents’ along the way.
you do it and you wipe it up.
I agree, it would be ridiculous.
This clearly was an act from a single highly delusional, very mentally unstable man—who probably didn’t even take a single class at uat. To make such a huge reactionary decision would be a big mistake.

I don't think I've ever posted b/c of my not wanting to be a troll, but...
this is a senseless act of criminal magnitude committed by a fan with no respect for an opponent. While I am an Alabama fan of the highest degree, I (and I would hope all Alabama fans) think that this action does nothing to help the growth of this rivalry. Though we may think each other’s traditions are less than our own, the traditions of both schools are what make the rivalry the greatest in college football. I do hope that they find this guy and prosecute him, but also this needs to be the end of the retribution. Both sides have “fans” that would take retaliation way to far and that doesn’t need to happen. Also, I htink it would be a good move for UA to donate money or supplies for helping to replace the trees as a sign of good will.
Roll Tide and Beat Navy
Retaliation?
Both sides have "fans" that would take retaliation way to far and that doesn’t need to happen.
This is not about retaliation. There’s no payback here. There’s no Us-vs.-Them-Moral-Equivalence here.
That’s not what’s going on here and, I believe you know it.
I would have expected more from a West Pointer.
xotus, I in no way think its about retaliation.
I feel for your school and fanbase right now, this was an attack on a beloved tradtion of Auburn. However, I am not naive enough to think that salvos could not be traded one for one here. Take a look around and notice that there are fringe people on both sides of the rivalry, really in any rivalry for that matter. I just don’t want this thing taken any further and neither do you. This is isn’t a moral battle here, what I’m talking about is the same that Bo Jackson….BO JACKSON…..is talking about right now on WJOX. I didn’t mean any negativity in my comments and frankly I’m surprised that you would attack my status as West Point Graduate. I didn’t attack your educational background or say that your comments weren’t indicative of your university’s values and I don’t appreaciate you attacking me in that way.
Roll Tide and Beat Navy
Attack? What the hell are you talking about?
Now, you want to play the victim here? I would have expected more from a West Pointer.
This is not an AU - UA thing...
the same synapse that is screwed up in this guy’s head could probably just as easily have made him do something really bad with a gun. Normal people in a rivalry don’t do that sort of thing.
This might irritate somebody, but what the heck….I lead a youth bible study at my church, and some of the kids were talking about it when I got there last night. We prayed for the guy…not because I wish him well, but because he must really live with some demons in his head, so to speak, to not realize the difference between right and wrong on this magnitude.
We ought to look at this as a teachable moment; I know I am with my kids. I hate it for Auburn and our tradition, and it really sucks, but at the end of the day, lets be thankful that its only some trees and not some lives. And maybe let’s pray that it stays that way.
I need a cold shower and a copy of the Auburn Creed
while I admire your sentiment greatly
I am frustrated with teachable moments I keep running into. Is there an ignorance option I’m not aware of? Maybe not a question for a sports blog, but such is life.
I think as long as we are human beings, we will always have to put up with teachable moments. When we stop having teachable moments, we probably become somebody else’s teachable moment.
As for the ignorance option, if I understand you correctly, I think that Darwin had some valid points.
This whole thread is probably not what you would want to read about in a sports blog, but isn’t it great to have a place where rational people can discuss rational things, as opposed to….

big aubie here, ive been telling people lately that ive never seen it so bad between our fan bases…while i am seeing stars over this attack,do you think we should walk away from this game for a few years to get away from this kind of crap from them?we are better than them and we need to show it .not trying to back down, believe me..i would love to get those cowards…but if you lie down with dogs you get fleas…you know>? would love to hear you guys thoughts thanks and WAR DAMN EAGLE!
one more thing, i really love a good rivalry, but as an aubie trapped in tuscaloosa i am subject to constant ridicule.i cant even fill up my car without being shouted at or riduculed.i am just tired of trying to turn the other cheek and let it go to show our auburn class…its constant and never stops….when you deal with fanatics it never ends…this thing may get alot worse before it gets better!thats why i suggested a break in the series.
The local NBC station here in Huntsville
has a live feed up from Toomers Corner. I watched for just a few minutes and saw 4 people walk up to the tree, pause for a second, touch the tree and walk away, head down. What those people are doing expresses quite well exactly what all of us are feeling right now. As for myself, I did the same thing last night after hearing about the news. I went to my front yard, touched my baby Toomers Corner tree and sighed a very angry sigh. I plan to take the high road on this but you can be sure there are some that won’t despite the warnings. I think all he can be charged with is malicious mischief so he won’t get anything but a slap on the hand. If I were Al, I would consider a move to another state and a name change. As far as suspending the series between the two teams, it will not change a thing. Stuff like this will still happen and Bammers will still be Bammers.

Jay, thanks for this post.
Retaliation is not the answer. Do we really want to play the Iron Bowl with the National Guard on hand? Or worse, cancel the rivalry because fans can’t keep it together? After listening to ’Al from Dadeville" (thanks to FlyAuburn for the links in his post), I am convinced that he did not graduate from college at all, much less uat. Any anger taken out on uat fans will be both misguided and misplaced. Most real Bama fans not only do not condone the deranged acts of one individual, they are willing to help rebuild that lovely corner at Magnolia and College.

TOTM, I am siding with Brian on this one. I won't take my children to the AU/UA game in
Tuscaloosa. A lifelong friend, whose husband is a season ticket holder and UAT grad, says she will never again go to an AU/UA game in T-town after this year. She was scared. I have talked with AU band members who said they were scared this year in Tuscaloosa. I think it’s time to not play them because unfortunately, we can’t just deal with university graduates when we go to their games. We have to wade through the 1000’s of guys outside the stadium as well. It’s not worth the possibility that someone, not a tree this time, will get hurt. I’m with Brian, I am sick of them. No fan base is like theirs. I’m done.
We can’t let fear creep into a tradition that we love so much. It’s a knee jerk reaction, and lets the terrorists win!
At the same time, I respect the actions that you feel you have to take to keep your fam safe. That’s the TigerMom in you :)
by Tiger on the mountain on Feb 17, 2011 10:46 AM CST up reply actions
It's deeper than that TOTM. The rivalry has changed so much over the years - it's no
longer a good natured feud. It’s time for a change. Thanks for your great comments here. Your positive outlook is always appreciated!
I am going to strongly disagree.
My sister was hanging out with her Bama friends for the Iron Bowl and felt perfectly safe. I would argue that those who didn’t feel safe, are likely in the minority. We will never be able to prevent every horrible thing from happening, but to say that this rivalry is completely defunct and like walking into a war zone is just false. I am very sorry that your friend experienced those things in Tuscaloosa.
by Tiger on the mountain on Feb 17, 2011 10:57 AM CST up reply actions
Again, this is not a comment on good Alabama fans. I can watch the game
with my Bama brother-in-law and we enjoy it. This thought first occured to me at the last game played at Legion Field because of some incidences I witnessed when the AU band arrived.
I am not equating the game to a war zone nor saying the rivalry is defunct; I am just wondering if perhaps adding Auburn to the East and having the teams play every four years may prevent anything worse happening. And I know I may sound like a crazy, knee jerk reactant, bringing this up today, but it has been something I have discussed with friends and family for a few years now.
Neither football program would be lessened if the other wasn’t on the schedule. I am just sayin, as a 44 year old, this rivalry has gotten ugly over the years. I wonder if it’s worth it.
They stopped playing one time before...
Then the state legislators got involved some years later. Maybe it needs to be played in Atlanta, or Dallas for a few years.
It would be tertrible if those few idiots ruined a great rivalry for all of college football.

People, in general, are more likely to focus on the negative interactions.
I, personally, have been to over 6+ Iron Bowls, and members of my family go every year. This is the first that I have heard of ‘violent’ acts or not feeling safe. IMO, the rivalry with Georgia would have been the one to cross the line first. Maybe me and my fam are in the minority. It’s hard to tell, because you are more likely to hear about the negative situations than the positive.
by Tiger on the mountain on Feb 17, 2011 11:44 AM CST up reply actions
It's more than those violent incidences than I mentioned. It's more a whole
feeling of animosity and, yes I’ll say it, true hatred. Consider the time and effort (for a symbolic example) it took for that “Cam money” to be printed at the Iron Bowl this year. I know a woman who was so proud of herself for taking a 1/2 day off of work to have the special bills printed so that her children could throw it at 18-21 boys at the game.
It’s that type of attitude – lifting up a game so much that you hurt humanity. I believe every word we say makes a difference – every action we take affects our fellow man. This rivalry has become ugly. Its effects have become more bad than good. This is my last post here – must get work done! But, the tree incident is the proverbial straw for me. It’s time to do something about our broken backs.
... another great post aubgrad. i can't tell you how many iron bowls i've been to...
i consider myself a grand optimist, in most cases, but this is it for me as well.
sadly, i do not consider this rivalry something i have been able to enjoy as much as it has ramped me up (BP) and made me nervous and scared (for my children, family, friends, etc). i’m happy for those who enjoy the cross team comraderie, but i have NEVER been blessed with that convenience.
so, does this type of environment = a “good” or “great” rivalry? does it have to include hate to = a great rivalry?, i don’t think so. in fact, i think quite the opposite. rivalries have to be healthy and respect is a front-end prerequisite for me. th the front-end credentials have been comprimised at this point. it is too silly and out of control to be a good rivalry right now.
that sad fact isn’t really all that sad for me… it is quite simply a reality…. after almost 20 years… and the evolution of fandom… instead of celebrating the competition, we are moving backwards… farther away from the joy of it.
you do it and you wipe it up.

In 1985 WallaceWade was chilling out in mom’s belly at the iron bowl. She was about a month pregnant and wrapped up in winter clothes so you couldn’t tell she was carrying a spawn of jim beam

Why Wally wanted to bring his mother into this is beyond me. But, if he didn’t start off with that story, he would have had to come up with another one — reaching for the moral equivalence angle, that just will never be there in this sorry case.
The bammers appear to be following Harvey Almorn Updyke’s lead. That crap he said on Finebaum about Toomer’s corner being rolled when Bryant died is a total fabrication. Not that the fabrication makes a difference, of course. Ol’ Al from Dadeville is going to do some serious time in big-boy prison, with or without that weak-ass-seat-of-the-pants excuse.

It bothered me that the NBC piece said that as if it were fact.

Only an Idiot
Only an idiot would think that the atrocious act of killing a couple of oak trees in Auburn would destroy the loyalty to or tradition at Auburn. Yes, the tradition may have take a left turn for a couple of years but the tradition will continue. Auburn folk will roll everything and anything for a couple of years until there are Oak trees big enough and strong enough to again carry on the Auburn traditions.
The only thing that “Al from Dadeville” accomplished was to pull a dark cloak over the UA fans and increase the Auburn Spirit. He also might have gotten himself a few years of free room and board.

Once this creep passes on to his Great Reward we should keep his grave decorated “Auburn Style”. Flags, pennants, streamers, shakers – paint the headstone Blue and Orange to celebrate big victories – maybe even hire someone to professionally inscribe the marker with loving Tiger tributes.
Of course the main thing is to let him know in the here and now what we’re going to do to him once he is in the hereafter – and that there won’t be anything that he can do about it.
Just an idea…
Well, um...
Not to jump in to y’all’s extreme grief here, but he wants to be remembered whether he’s hated or not. The best thing to do be to forget him completely.
As Bono would say, Don’t let the bastards grind you down. Knoxville is thinking of you all right now, so keep your heads up!
I would gladly pitch in such an event
Lol that would be great to see !!!!
Go one further and sentence him to where he has to be buried in an AUB casket….
although i wouldnt blame you for thinking he doesnt deserve those colors either.

Since the news conference mentioned the FBI was involved
I wonder if a domestic terrorism charge might be coming? I seriously can not contemplate this act. And to find out the guy was a retired Texas Ranger?
I never liked Alabama, or the SEC to be honest, but I now have a favorite team in the SEC!!!
What heart-soothing comments; thanks for taking the time. It's appreciated.
Just for you, here’s our creed. It’s pretty special to us. Maybe it would do us all good today.
I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work.
I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully.
I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot win the respect and confidence of my fellow men.
I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and a spirit that is not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities.
I believe in obedience to law because it protects the rights of all.
I believe in the human touch, which cultivates sympathy with my fellow men and mutual helpfulness and brings happiness for all.
I believe in my Country, because it is a land of freedom and because it is my own home, and that I can best serve that country by “doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with my God.”
And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in Auburn and love it.
-George Petrie (1945)
Thank you
That creed makes me think of Nile Kinnick’s Heisman speech. Just know this, you guys will always have a friend in the Hawkeyes. Makes sense really, Hawkeyes and a War Eagle have to be friends against the likes of Alabama and fOhio State.
As Auburn fans, we have always known that we carry ourselves with more class and dignity than those other people. This is a perfect opportunity for us to show it.

I'm for a PPV grudge match: RAWR - - Updyke v. Tammy
Winner take all.
This is pukingly sick. Hopeful that calmer heads prevail.

i've got a copule of top shelf ol Auburn pals in Memphis...
Bill Davies is an Architect with Looney Ricks & Kiss Architects
and…
Rich Playford is a graphic designer in town…
top shelf guys.
best of luck with the seedling. thanks much for your comments.
if you’re passin through Asheville, NC… come by BEW Architects and we’ll get a beer somewhere.
you do it and you wipe it up.
If I'm that way
I will do. Right now I’m trying to return to Iowa (Memphis isn’t the A$$HOLE of America [Sorry don’t know the posting standards here yet] it’s the taint since some might find pleasure of an A$$). But I loved NC even when I was stationed at Fort Bragg…
Like everone else, I have been sick over this.
But now that they caught him – I’m glad. If he gets a big sentence – I will be elated.
Throw away the key.

Try not to drop the soap Harvey.
I'm an Auburn fan because I go to Auburn. You're a Bama fan because you went to Walmart.
Auburn Tigers 2010 National Champions
What is your point?

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

From a Michigan alumnus............
I’m very sorry for what happened. College football is based on tradition, and college football fans respect the traditions at our own schools, and appreciate the traditions at other fine schools like Auburn. Although I bleed maize and blue, I’m bleeding a little orange for you folks now. The fans posting here have shown a lot of class and dignity despite such a loss, and I respect and admire all of you for that. I’ll be rooting for you from now on. From a Michigan Wolverine……WAR EAGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much Mattbags.
Your comments are appreciated. You did not have to take the time to do that. But I want you to know it means alot, especially coming from someone from one of the most tradition rich programs in the country. Go Wolverines

Bama Fans Stand With Our Auburn Brothers
As a life-long Bama fan, I want all you Tigers to know that the vast majority of Bama fans stand by you in this time or sorrow. We would NEVER damage anything so sacred to you as the trees in Toomer’s Corner! Bama/Auburn is and will continue to be a great football rivalry, but that’s all it is…a football rivalry! 364 days a year you are and will always be my best friends. Please don’t ever let that change? War Eagle and Roll Tide!!
