Tigers "Never To Yield" Spirit Forces Ga. In To Overtime
The outmanned Auburn Tigers took a 16-6 Georgia team in to over time at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens Saturday afternoon, only to lose in the end 81-72.
With the lone exception of the Tennessee game, the Tigers have become a dangerous team of late for SEC opponents. It's only been a week since Auburn defeated South Carolina at home 79 - 64.
Georgia led most of Saturday's game but the Tigers would not go away. Their gallant effort was led by Guard Earnest Ross who scored 30 points including five three pointers.
Ross said, "We know the reputation we have around the league and we go into these games as underdogs, so we play harder. All the pressure's on the opposing team. We just go out and play hard and give it our all." Playing hard is just what Coach Tony Barbee is asking of his young and depleted squad.
Yet if Auburn could have done better at the foul line, the out come may have been different. The Tigers made only 5 of 14 foul shots; and the misses on the front end of one-and-ones particularly hurt.
Although what probably hurt more was the absence of center Rob Chubb, who has recently emerged as an offensive threat for the Tigers. Chubb was suspended by Coach Barbee last week indefinitely for a violation of team rules. There has been no word on when or if Chubb may be allowed to return.
Chubb's suspension is just the latest setback to plague the Tigers - from non qualifiers to key injuries the team has had to deal with a lot of misfortune this year. But in true Auburn fashion they have shown the spirit of "never to yield." Coach Barbee said he was especially proud of the fighting spirit the Tigers displayed Saturday.
Auburn will now have a week off before hosting Mississippi State Saturday at the Auburn Arena. The game is scheduled to start at 6 pm CST and will be carried on Fox Sports Net.

i watched this
I can’t say i wasn’t disappointed we ended up losing, but I was extremely proud of the way we played. We are clearly outmatched by every team we play against, but we have more fight in us than all of them. Also, I’ll share what I told my georgia fan after the game, “well it was a close game. I think all of my fellow auburn fans and I should storm downtown Athens and set it on fire, while we whine to ourselves about the dirty play by the Dawgs. Apparently that is proper etiquette when you lose a game.”
I'm an Auburn fan because I go to Auburn. You're a Bama fan because you went to Walmart.

After everything...
I think I hate Georgia as much as anyone. Damn, they just whine and whine and whine. I sure hope we beat them in Georgia next year. In addition, I damn sure want to do the Soulja Boy in their end-zone at the end of the game. Hell, let Chizik join in along with Trooper and Luper.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Great idea! I have always enjoyed this rivalry, but this year was awful!
Sparkey, maybe we can come up with a kind of “Soulja Boy/Lutzie/War Eagle” move just for that game. I’ll begin studying old music videos immediately.
While I 'll be the first to admit that the Dawg fans have ...
Kicked it up a level or two higher recently, I would not like to stoop to their levels, ever.
This basketball team is showing the true Auburn spirit. They don’t give up, they don’t quit working hard, and they know, one day, that they will come out on top.
I say we follow that example, let everyone else in the SEC act however they want, we will be, and always have been, Auburn.
WAR EAGLE!

I heartily second your post KB - what heart those guys showed yesterday!
You feel for the lack of talent, but marvel at their desire. The GA game was heartbreaking, but great to see.
Outstanding game.
We’re just starting to figure out how to be a basketball school, but to step into a road game with the record AU has so far and take a solid Georgia team into overtime was a great feat. I think it’s pretty clear that Auburn basketball has a bright future. In fact, I think the conference as a whole has been evolving into a stronger conference in this strange winter sport with the round bouncing ball. It’s not just a one-horse (um, one-wildcat?) conference any more.
As for the “dirty play”, I watched the game and read the wrap-ups, but I missed whatever talk there was about possibly dirty play. I guess that kind of thing in basketball doesn’t get the national attention that it does in a football game.
What I posted earlier was a joke
alluding to the reaction of Georgia fans to us winning the football game. I wasn’t actually suggesting that we as a fanbase whine like they do. I pride myself on not being “that guy.” It was a very cleanly played game, and actually very entertaining to watch (which we don’t get to say about Auburn basketball very often)

I got the humorous intent.
Mine was a purposefully deadpan response. I don’t think Georgia fans have a corner on the whining market, considering we’re still hearing whining about Soulja Boy more than three years after the game.

That's not whining...
That’s a statement of how you’re going to suffer the consequences for years to come on that. And yes, you guys do have a corner on the whining market. Don’t worry, you’re about to start having plenty of things to whine about over there. :-)

Thank NCT for the compliment.
Your statement -
“Outstanding game …. (for Auburn) to step into a road game with the record AU has so far and take a solid Georgia team into overtime was a great feat. I think it’s pretty clear that Auburn basketball has a bright future.”
A lot of people come to their rivals board to trol and start arguements. It was apparent that you did not come over here to do that. Your original comment showed a lot of class.
Good luck the rest of the season. I hope Ga. gets to represent the SEC in the post season NCAA Tournament.

Thanks.
I should have left it at that, which was my purpose in navigating to the site in the first place, but Internet (ill-)manners took over after I read some of the other comments. It’s a rivalry. It happens.
