Looking Forward - Running Backs
This post probably won't take too long, because there aren't that many backs to discuss. Attrition has left "Running Back U" at an incredibly low level, numbers wise.
With only two returning players and a smattering of experience behind them, Auburn is searching for answers to the one big question. Who wants to play?
Mike Dyer earned Offensive MVP in the BCS game last season with a very respectable performance, and two memorable runs. He broke the freshman rushing record set by Bo Jackson, gaining 1,093 yards and did that mostly between the tackles. Dyer is looking toward next season and has stepped into the leadership role along with Onterio McCaleb. They will be the old men of the offense.
Speaking of McCaleb, he only rushed the ball 95 times as a sophomore last season, but boy were they ever beautiful runs. He gained 810 yards mostly around the edge, and that worked to perfection with the threat of a running QB at the helm.
The most experienced player at RB behind Dyer and McCaleb, is Anthony Morgan. Morgan, who came to Auburn as Anthony Gulley, changed his last name in honor of his adopted parents.
Morgan spent time late last season practicing at the RB spot in the now infamous BCS practices for walk-ons and non starters. He was good enough, and asked Coach Luper enough times to get moved back to RB this season.
Coach Chizik says this about Morgan..
"Obviously, with our tailback position being what it is, that was a move we felt like would make sense. And we expect him to get back there and compete. I feel good, and it's been a comfortable transition for him."
Anthony ran five times and scored twice against Furman two years ago and had an excellent game. Since then he has spent time where the coaches needed bodies the most, which happened to be defense, with some time at Wide out. He has gained some weight, and looks more like a typical SEC back at 195 pounds. I look for Morgan to play a big role at the RB position this fall. Mostly in backup to Dyer, he will not be a step down in quality, if he stays healthy, I'll guarantee that now!
That leaves us with "BIG" Ladarious Phillips, the roster shows him at 6'1" and 291 ponds, although Coach Luper states that he gained "some weight" with last years injury. "Eric and a half" will play the H back role in Auburn's offense. I'll stand by what I said last season prior to his injury, if he stays healthy, he'll blow it up this year. I have personally nicknamed him "LP". He is quicker than you think and has some gifted athleticism. He also came to Auburn with arguably the best highlight video of any who signed in his class.
RB/DL- # 37- LADARIOUS PHILLIPS- HANDLEY HIGH(ROANOKE,AL)- 6'1-270lbs, CLASS OF 2010 (via STREETLIGHTPRODUCE)
I'll wait and see how incoming frosh Tre Mason looks in an Auburn jersey, but I have no doubt he will get some playing time this fall.
Congratulations goes to WDE1121 and his video "Radio Comparison" winner of the innaugural Track Em Tigers Post Season Video contest!

arguably best video of his class?
Try hands (shake ’em on) down best video of his class and arguably best video of the modern football recruiting era. “Can you feel it?”
While I am a huge NMAS fan....
I have to think it’s a reference to the sound track on the recruiting video.
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.
Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
Yes they do....
but if you will listen to the sound track on the video you will understand the reference.

Honestly
I don’t really think that our Tailback position is as shallow as it is portrayed. Fannin didn’t really get a significant number of hand-offs last year anyways (and when he did it usually ended up on the ground). His blocking and pass catching out of the backfield will be missed, but if “LP” is as good as our coaching staff seems to think then I think he will make a suitable substitute. I bet despite the fact that we aren’t as deep with the experience at RB this year, they still turn out to be one of the better squads in the SEC. The thing that worries me more than the lack of depth at RB itself is the offensive line they are running behind. The line may be a little behind the curve at the beginning of the season.

I agree about the line
I also think that Auburn’s running backs will be in the top tier in the conference, as for as talent is concerned, but it will be important for the line to gel in order for that talent to be maximized.
You can be an Auburn fan if you want :)
Have enjoyed reading your comments! Hope that you become a regular…..

I'm actually a student at Auburn
I don’t have the intense hatred towards Auburn that most Bama fans do. I honestly hope Auburn goes 12-1 next season, losing only in the Iron Bowl.
That totally makes sense with your Major!
No wonder you are so, sane (?) for a Bama fan. War Eagle!

I reserve the right to be blameless...
Especially with this next statement.
How do think it looks with Mike Dyer injured and out for two or three games? Still think it’s not “as shallow as it’s portrayed”?
What if two of them go down? I am not being ugly about this, and I sure as heck don’t want to see this happen, but it is a possibility.

I'm holding you personally responsible...
Should this happen. Haha. I didn’t say that wouldn’t hurt us, I just meant that it wouldn’t hurt more than it would have last year. It always hurts to Lise a player of his caliber

Losing any player of Dyer or Onterio's quality...
would hurt any team. Still, it seems like Auburn would be no worse off in that case than any other team would be.
last year, we entered with a senior backed up by a FR...
…and eventually the FR beat out the senior. it is easy make assumptions, what ifs,… but the success at RB for Auburn has been about the Oline and the dynamic run play designs in the last couple years… not about depth (in my opinion).
i would say that it is reasonable to expect a fall back on the deep passing game, and that this, and the inexperience of the AU Oline, will affect the AU run game much more than AU RB depth.
Malzahn will counter these offensive personality shifts with new ways to get rushing yards… a new look at wildcat, specific RB dedicated to wheel routes(Bray?)…etc. the beauty of O-mac’s situation…is that he has limited plays that are designed to him. i think that we’ll see some new designed for LP, Bray, Reed, O-mac… that will result in an offense much more focused on 3downs and 10 yards…then the offense that had such bold vertical strikes with Newton.
you do it and you wipe it up.
I'll agree about the line...
and disagree about depth.
I see Omac being used more on wheel routes, because no linebacker can keep up with him. When the adjustment is made to bring up a corner for help with that, the verticle will be more effective.

That's my concern for Auburn this year
Auburn has unquestionable talent but is relatively thin on experience. If nobody important (Dyer, starting QB, any starter on either line) goes down, Auburn should be fine. But odds are that at least somebody will get hurt – and then a new kid will have to step up. Again, if the guys can show that they deserved all of their recruiting stars, Auburn will be fine.
We at UGA don’t get ya’ll until late in the season (like always). I’m trying to decide if that’s good for us or not. On the one hand, I think you’ll be banged up by then, especially given how brutal the beginning of your schedule is. On the other hand, the game will be slowing down for all the recruits. The danger for Auburn is in the middle of the schedule – late enough for a few key guys to be dinged but early enough that the freshmen haven’t quite got it all figured out.
It should be fun.

well if this year works out like 2009
they it is definitely an advantage for you all. I guess we have to have our fingers crossed that nobody too significant goes down.

True for everybody
Injuries are part of the game, and great teams have to have great depth or great luck. But, at the same time, we all hope that teams can put their best 22 on the field and that none of the guys get hurt.

Anthony Morgan
has really piqued my interest…I remember what he did against Furman a few years ago…while it was only Furman, I saw lots of potential…and he seems to be a thoughtful, well spoken young man from his interviews, as well. Phillips will be a monster, as well!! WAR EAGLE!!
i remember that game as well. he looked really elusive and once he got passed the line he would turn it on.
yet another story of a guy with great skills shifted into a great (new) opportunity.
you do it and you wipe it up.
of course, ... we're all just havin fun guessin these days...
i’ve been around for many seasons where specific preseason positions were areas of concern regarding depth…and all of a sudden, the tables turn once the season starts… a FR steps up big, and a veteran player gets hurt somewhere else…and now you’re in a position 1-2 games into a season that you never imagined. a weakness can become a strength… strength to weakness… just… like… that.
this is exactly the reason it is wasted energy to expect a certain level of depth … anywhere.
before the 2010 season, lots of folk thought we had depth issues at RB, then Newton and Dyer started to run all over the place and led Auburn to the best running game in the SEC. of course, so many factors affected RB for AU in 2010… aycock getting the boot early played into Dyer’s mindset in a big way early in the season. also, the newton rush threat allowed the calls to Dyer last year to gear toward building him up slowly throughout the season.
it is hard to attach success of one position without discussing the strength and depth of another… this article touches on that: O-Mac’s 8 +yards per carry had an absolute TON to do with the tough Newton runs that kept the LBs busy and honest all day… great downfield blocking by Burns, etc. Dyer’s effective running up the middle had a TON to do with a veteran and ACTIVE Auburn Offensive line.
it is easier to imagine/ guess how the personality of the offense as a whole will change than it is to pick apart and dissect a single position… in my opinion.
Dyer and O-Mac as leaders- yeah. it has to happen… NOW,… and in a not so subtle way.
where there is potential for new weapons (LP, Lutz, wildcat?) there will be positions that will have to set those weapons up. a player has to step up and offer something that the coaches weren’t planning on. that is consistent for every team looking to be successful.
what we do know, is that Malzahn and Chizik have been incredibly effective at staying flexible, adjusting, reinventing, within the system to make the most of who’s hot. there are examples and “for instances” for us to talk about all over the place in the past couple years. i don’t have to be confident in one piece of the offense, … chizik and malzahn have provent themselves much more sophisticated than that.
you do it and you wipe it up.

Agreed...
Last year, there were questions about our O-line…then we had an injury to Greene and Brandon Mosley stepped in and did just fine. I think that we have plenty of players who can step up if necessary. I actually think this season Auburn will be just fine!
TE
I like the two recruits coming in a lot. Fulse is a more traditional tight end who also catches well. But Uzomah could be Auburn’s Trey Burton. Very good athlete for his size and can throw and run as well as catch.
If hip hop is dead, then it happened the day that Dilla died.
-Akrobatik
i don't mean to suggest that Auburn is going to be fine...
OR,… that Auburn will be in a world of hurt. the only thing that is for certain is that there will be some sincere creativity happening, once again, in the playbook and strategy…
i think the pieces suggest a different personality for the offense, but there is always the chance out there that someone will grow into a role fast and flip everything. it is an underappreciated fact that Auburn has the staff who can manage this well.
in my mind, the only guess that there is, is a guess with equal amount of confidence and hesitation… we can count on our coaches managing the ingredients and fielding them with great creativity- despite depth issues. some of this will work, and other experiments…. when they clearly don’t fit, they’ll have to decide whether or not the players have to be nudged to fit, hammered to fit, or thrown out and reevaluated. i love that. i love how much fun it has been to be an Auburn fan in that situation with these coaches. i think it is possible that they actually embrace this bit of ambiguity early.
you do it and you wipe it up.
You made some good points above about
the importance of down field blocking. These will be key in establishing a good running game (in addition to the all important O-line). We could not have a better coaching staff. Seriously. It is hard to predict who will have a break out season, but I am anticipating Mr. Dyer stepping up as a leader and I am loving the idea of seeing the Mac-Attack on some wheel routes. Bring it on!
by Tiger on the mountain on Apr 1, 2011 1:07 PM CDT up reply actions
I truly believe that may be the most under appreciated aspect to this staff Chizik has in place....
The genius in Malzahn’s offense is that whatever degree of athlete he has in place, he can find a way to best utilize them. But the other offensive coaches are in tune with this style of “O”. Trooper Taylor has put many a good reciever on the field in his day, Luper’s success as a RB coach is rather obvious(GREAT) and they all teach a set of fundamentals that balances well with the Malzahnian theroy of scoring.
Throw in the hardnosed, and task oriented teachings of Jeff Grimes, and you have the best balanced staff in all of college football. YES, I said that!

absolutely KB.
not sure what my opinion is on the O-mac / wheel route idea. O-mac would sure have the speed. earlier, i was simply bringing up that the wheel route, that fannin made a good living on, is a RB/ HB route for a guy with good hands, speed, AND size. it is hard for me to see this going away as a focus for this offense.
the size part comes in play when the route has to muscle passed the LBs within the 1st 5 yards or so. most of these routes dedicate WRs on both sides flying deep to take the DBs deep. whoever runs the wheel route underneath has to prove to coaches he can release and beat an OLB to the outside in 10-15 yards.
Lutz caught a HUGE wheel route pass against Oregon in the big dance. I think he is a candidate who has great hands, good size, and deceptive speed.
i think Lutz will be used, and maybe a guy like Quan Bray might get a look also. Bray is by far one of the more versatile offensive guys coming in…looks a bit like he is this year’s Trovon Reed.
this is where my head is with the AU offense in 2011… especially with regards to AU’s rush O…just guessing.
i think 2 TE sets are very possible this year. this offers up an extra pass / run blocker and frees up Lutzenkirchen as a primary offensive target within 10 yards. in these sets, i expect Dyer to be the lone back. the motion/ confusion of the offense will be with the TEs and WRs
i think Auburn will play to sustain drives (focus on 10 yards) and less toward a big play that came w/ Newton even when not scripted.
we have 2 TEs that are coming in: Brandon Fulse, and CJ Uzomah who are very versatile guys. One will win IN to the 2nd TE spot…and gain a TON of experience this year.
this would be a departure from some of the stuff that we did last year- reacting to personnel. Lutz could motion to FB, HB, TE… etc…. and a whole new set of options would be available. LP could line up as FB, and motion to HB… getting down field for blocking.
can you imagine running some of our WRs off a LP HB “screen” or cross route play? that is like having an agile lineman downfield and there could be some serious mismatches against smaller LBs.
i also like the idea of this set working with some wildcat players that might be woven in… CJ Uzomah is a TE, but played QB in HS, he’s a big athlete and could have good vision at wildcat QB… similar to newton on short yardage plays. trovon reed, healthy, could be a slippery option at wildcat also… especially on speed sweeps
another run play that could work well might be the HB shuffle pass (similar to what UF ran with Tebow and their TE).
the other set could be with LD as FB, and the ability to slide him in motion to a HB – 3 WR overload set. with the Oline as inexperienced as it will start off being, i just think that it is hard to escape the logic of big boy LP as lead blocker and 2 TE sets that could provide better protection, better short yardage run and short/medium pass play options.
you do it and you wipe it up.
Auburns success or lack of this season will rest with the OL......
if the OL gels then we will be very good….I expect our Defense to be young but a much more aggressive unit overall and while they may occasionally make a mistake I expect it to be an aggressive mistake rather than the passive ones that we saw the last two seasons. Our RB’s will be fine…look for not only Ladarius Phillips, Anthony (Gulley) Morgan, and Tre Mason to contribute but watch out for Trovon Reed and possibly Quan Bray to step in as a scat type back siimilar to Noel Devine at WVU….Malzahn will find the strengths of the personell packages and take full advantage.
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.
Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.

you're more ambitious than i TOM... if you have to ask that question, then maybe you shouldn't try to drop a "werd" like that...
still, i applaud it… everyone has to drop a coolism from time to time… especially ones from the ’80s like… “rad”, “excellent”, and “Awesome!”
i never thought i would outgrow the “bad” means “good”… but you,… TOM are bad to the bone…and one thing i do know is… both “cool” and “hot” are still apparently … good things.

Sorry...
I’m not buying into the idea that Morgan will be so great this season. I just don’t like his game that much honestly. I sincerely hope he proves me wrong, but I am simply not looking for much from him.
Damn, Calloway would’ve helped us out so much.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
