Looking Forward - The Quarterbacks-Amended Version

It's a magical time of the year. The flowers are blooming, our vehicles are covered with a coat of pollen so thick, it looks like a bag of yellow flour has dumped on them. The 75th Masters tournament has been played, and a new champion crowned, and there has been news filtering out of Auburn about spring football practice.

All of that means only one thing, a quarterback competition on the Plains.

I can not remember how long it has been since we did not have this subject to talk about, in the spring, at Auburn. One thing for sure, the competition is much different, than in years past.

Different in several ways as matter of fact. For one, the two competitors have developed a close friendship since coming to Auburn. They also have to follow behind the legacy that is Cam Newton. You guys remember Cam don't you? He only won the SEC, The "MNC", and the Heisman Award as college footballs most valuable player. Quite a tall task for either one of these guys considering they have never started a game at the college level.

The two gentlemen involved are #15 Clint Moseley, and #14 Barrett Trotter. Their appearances at the college level, are very short lived. Clint Moseley played in one game, ran the ball twice for 8 yards, and did not attempt a pass. Trotter on the other hand, played sparing, usually in mop up duty in 6 games. He ran the ball 5 times for 68 yards, and a touchdown. Passing, he was 6 of 9 for 64 yards, and zero touchdowns. He does sport an average yards per play of 22.0. That's impressive. What is more impressive is zero turnovers. A trend that will have to continue if he were to be named the starter.

Still both were considered great talents out of high school. Trotter came to Auburn via Briarwood Christian in Birmingham, AL and is third all-time in the Alabama High School record books with 88 TD passes. He holds the record for TD's at Briarwood, and yards passed with 7,968 total.

Moseley was Alabama Mr. Football for 2008 and led his team to it's third straight State championship. He was also MVP of that title game as a senior.

Something about all this should have me jittery and worried concerning QB play next season. Alas, I have partaken of the "Mad Dr. Gustav's" elixir. "Koolaide" if you will. The belief that Gus Malzahn has some inherent formula that breaks the spells and jinxes of the first year QB. Gus has had a new QB in every season he has coached at the college level.

This coming season at Auburn, Malzahn may have his first three year understudy in Trotter, taking the reigns of his misdirection, run first, zone read, offensive masterpiece. In previous seasons it has appeared that no matter who was in the drivers seat, the "Gus Bus" went forward with the power of a bulldozer, and the finesse of a ballet dancer. I'm guessing that will continue.

WAR EAGLE!

ANDY BITTER POSTED THIS FRIDAY EVENING

In an interview session with Gus Malzahn today, we get this quote....

"Just to be completely honest, it’s been fairly close," offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn said of the battle between Barrett Trotter and Clint Moseley. "In my mind there’s not a whole lot of separation."

"We’ll look at every practice, we’ll look at every snap and we’ve been charting completions, touchdowns, interceptions, fumbles, everything and we’ll take all that into account," Malzahn said.

If I may be so bold, I would take from these quotes that for the most part, one QB has had a better spring. Not everyday mind you, but, for the most part one of these guys has earned his shot at running the club.

I look for a leader to be announced sometime in the near future, with the statement that young Mr. Frazier has an opportunity to come in and impress.

You can read the rest of Andy's post HERE, which includes video of today's interview.

no matter who the start QB is... i think we're going to have a stout wildcat package this year.

i am, in some ways, more curious about the wildcat and other offensive options that are a part of Gus’s toolbox then who will start at QB.

trovon reed, ladarius phillips, CJ Uzomah/ Brandon Fulse, Phillip Lutzenkirchen…

a whole new bag of goodies to choose from.

despite the newness of this all… i think there is a natural, inherent, excitement when Gus has all these pieces to play around with. The reasonable inexperience of the Oline could produce another circumstance for creativity in play calling. what a fine place to be…when you can just ease into excitement knowing that the OC can mix it up into an interesting medley of sorts.

you do it and you wipe it up.

Good point KB that ...

… Malzahn will have his first three year understudy in Trotter. Thats why I voted for him. Of course Mosely in my opinion has great potential as well and he has been there a couple of years. i’m glad we got both of them. If one goes down in a game, the other should be able to keep on trucking.Very much enjoyed the read.

OFF TOPIC:

what ya’ll think about the statues?

They can turn out pretty goofy looking unless you’re careful. I hope Saban doesn’t come out looking like Sauron but ya never know.

disappointed about the statues... there is no doubt the idea of honoring, memorializing, commemorating, immortalizing...

is a jumbled mess these days with so many statues going up all over the place.

how many mother theresa statues are there in this world?

regardless of what other schools like UF and bama are doing… it seems like this move just doesn’t fit the “loveliest village on the plans” idea… for me, a move like this needs to be more consistent with the idea of the Auburn family…

personally, i much prefer the symbols such as the toomer’s corner oaks- a gathering place for…the family.

i think these legends of Auburn football shouldn’t stand as tall (1.5 scale is ridiculous), but do deserve something to acknowledge their absolutely incredible skills.

Auburn is getting into the marketing of Auburn, there is no doubt… i just think it needs to be done with a quality that is AUBURN… not these huge statues… or painted up elitest RVs. mellow ‘mushroom’ it out a bit…don’t you think?

you do it and you wipe it up.

Great post!

My brain is fried after a long week..so I will spare any attempt at intelligible analysis or commentary. Except to say, that I find the coaches’ comments this week about naming a quarterback after Spring practice quite interesting….will they or won’t they name a starter? I do think that there will be tremendous pressure (perceived or otherwise) on magical Cam’s successor. But hopefully, it will only take that first game to shake any of that off.

The only other thing I got is: awesomesauce. There it is. TOTM yells ‘Uncle!’. There totally better be wine at this dinner I am going to tonight……

Quarterback depth chart prediction next fall

Starter-Trotter
Back up-Frazier
Third-Moseley
If Trotter should get injured, Frazier is a 4 year starter

I just hope they erect the Saban statue/altar/shrine before he leaves

Frazier will be the starter before seasons end

I see too many +’s in him getting playing time and eventually starting this coming season for it no to happen. I have seen good things in sparsity from both Trotter and Mosely, but KF seems to have that ‘it’ factor that is so rare in collegiate sports. If it translates up a level, he will win the job eventually. I am so looking forward to seeing these guys on the field tomorrow and making some further assessments and observations!!!

WDE!!! Only a few more months til the season!!!!

Much like early 2009...

…..I think that if Trotter doesn’t win it, with all time he’s put in… look out.

......Drowning in cool elixir.

well 2009 wasn't that bad at QB

Right now with the information the coaches have provided (basically nothing) I see no reason to be excited or worried. These coaches could find work at the State Department with all the doublespeak they put out in interviews. Reminds me of Bull Durham where Kevin Costner is coaching Tim Robbins on how to answer interview questions when he goes to the “show”.

Also, since when is an incoming freshman QB deserved of any kind of hype. I say Frazier has got a hell of a lot to prove if he wants to play at all this year. Show me.

I agree...

not that much to worry about…..Malzahn will field the best one and I think do very well with whoever that is.

I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.

Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
