An Open Letter To Sirius/XM Satellite Radio
The following is a letter to Mel Karmazin, CEO of Sirius/XM Satellite Radio:
Dear Mr. Karmazin:
I'm writing you on behalf of all the decent people in the state of Alabama. I write you not as an Auburn fan, but a concerned citizen of this state. While I wear orange-and-blue, I know I'm joined by many who sport crimson-and-white.
We beg you to please pull The Paul Finebaum Show from your programming lineup. For a state that's tried hard to overcome George Wallace and Taylor Hicks, the daily musings of Alabama's most ignorant on national radio is too much for a state to endure.
Last week the program hit an all-time low; and with it, the good people of Alabama suffered another body blow to public perception. I promise you not all Alabamians have the IQ of an extra-point.
We no more bought into the antics of Harvey Updyke and his attention seeking lawyer than the rest of your listeners who happened across the Finebaum program at the wrong time.
This made-for-radio event may have been the biggest embarrassment to the state since Bobby Lowder was nominated to another term on the Auburn Board of Trustees. I know it's only been a week, but things move fast around here.
The vast majority of fans in this state view the Auburn-Alabama rivalry for what it is: a nice diversion from the struggles of everybody life in the Deep South. While fans from both schools generally dislike the other on football Saturday's, we do take a sense of pride in producing the last two national champions.
Don't get me wrong, both sides would be way more satisfied with only one title winner from the state; but since it happened, we'll take it and be proud of it. Note to Governor Bentley: Don't ever bring this up at a national championship celebration. I know you are part of the Updyke Nation, but don't be stupid.
But I digress.
Mr. Karmazin, we don't tag our children with names like Bear, Shug, Bo or Allie Bammy; although I have seen more than a few dogs with these names. I believe I speak for most of the state when I say we cringed when Updyke showed up on the Finebaum show to explain his "assault" at a busy gas station in Opelika.
Never mind that no one witnessed the attack at the orange-and-blue attired station or that Updyke's lawyer, Glennon Threatt, immediately called Finebaum's program to clue Paul in on the happenings of this melodrama. Finebaum knows good theater. Let's not let a few inconsistencies get in the way of a good story. Right?
I assure you not all 62 year-old men in this state first think of their high school coach after committing a felony and then feel the need to apologize publicly to him, before making amends with those who they truly harmed. Then again, most former state troopers think before committing a crime and the repercussions they will face on the inside. Squeal like a pig boy!
Listening to Finebaum, it's easy to understand why many of you in New York view the South the way you do. I promise it's not like this in all parts of Alabama. Just stay away from Bryant-Denny Stadium in the fall and the all-you-can-eat buffet at Golden Corral on Saturday night and you'll be fine.
I hope you'll consider my request. The state has suffered enough. With double-digit unemployment and Bear Bryant starting to fade from the memories of even the oldest Alabama fans, the good people of this state need a break.
We helped everyone out by getting Bill Curry off your television and back into football coaching. Now it's your turn.
In the immortal words of Pat Dye, can you do for the state what Auburn did to Alabama 22 years ago, and throw us a bone?
Sincerely,
Embarrassed in Alabama

Add our names
Is there a place that we can add our name to your letter.
Speaking as a Bama fan,,,
I wholeheartedly agree with this. That show should be pulled from the air immediately.
Hey, now that you mention it....
We helped everyone out by getting Bill Curry off your television and back into football coaching. Now it’s your turn.
Can we detour from Finebaum long enough to do this with Bob Davie?
Get him a coaching gig, get Craig James an endorsement deal that takes up all his time (whatever sort you can get for paste-eating meatheads), and get Gary Danielson any job away from the CBS booth…and Saturdays become that much more enjoyable.
And then the Finebaum thing. Totally.
Also agreed
To call Finebaum a journalist is the biggest stretch of the title I can think of. His sole purpose is to find the sleaziest subject he can and take calls from some of the most ignorant people he can find. I have never called his show but I would bet his call screeners don’t put normal, lucent callers on the air.
I just hope they erect the Saban statue/altar/shrine before he leaves
Couldn't agree more Jay
Without Finebaum and his type, no one could report of incidents like the Trailer 4 or Curbstomp Eric Smith. You’re right, get this fool of the radio. Bill Cameron and all the other fair minded types will surely report everything that happens. BTW, how are Tammy and Charles?
Seriously? No one except Finebaum and his ilk reports bad stuff about Auburn? WHere have you
Been this past year? I think Jay says in his article that both schools have embarrassing fans/moments. It’s a shame the good stories and alumni don’t sell as well as the bad.

I listen to Bill Cameron everyday.
He certainly will tell the negatives coming out of Auburn. I was listening to him the day Harvey was “attacked” and he reported it.
If Finebaum gets an Auburn fan on, he may agree with everything you say,,,,,and then when the bammers start calling, he sides with them.
Finebaum,,,,GO AWAY!
Right on Jay.
Mudslinging, pot stirring, Finebaumn has done more to reinforce the negative image of Southerners than any southern man alive. And he doesn’t care as long as he makes more money.

This will only help Finebaum draw more traffic.
'11: Minimum Goal: 9-3 Regular Season. Given FSU's non-con slate, don't care who the 9 are.
'10: 7th in offense, 41st in defense. Division Champions. 10-4. (6-3)
'09: 8th in offense, 88th in defense. 7-6 (4-4)

Thanks Jay for the article.
Its time that Sirius heard from some of us. They won’t change anything, but at least they know how a lot of us feel.
In order to pull Finebaum from Sirius/XM, we must first pull the crazies from Finebaum — crazies being Shane, I-Man, Tammy, Charles from Reeltown, Legend, etc. etc. They’re the people who gives this show legs and without them, well, the show would sputter. Don’t think for a second Finebaum doesn’t realize this. He gets as much of a kick out of these idiots as the outsiders do.
F-U and ROLL TIDE ROLL!
Let the record show
I don’t necessarily agree with the notion of pulling Finebaum off of the air. As biased as he is towards Alabama, nobody is forcing anyone to listen to him. If he is pulled, some other alabama fan will start a show that the crazies will call in to. Moronic fans will embarass themselves one way or another. I usually disagree with “pawwwwl” and sometimes he pisses me off with what he says, but hell… it’s his show. He’s allowed to say what he wants.
I'm an Auburn fan because I go to Auburn. You're a Bama fan because you went to Walmart.

While I agree with some of your premise....
the point that Jay is making is that Paul perpetuates the myth that everyone in alabama is like the idiot callers he has.
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.
Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
Oh i get it
and I realize that the state of Alabama gets a bad rap because of it, but I also think that people associate the state of Alabama with the University of Alabama. The bad perception is their problem more than it is ours. The bammers love to point out that a lot of people don’t know where Auburn is (though I guarantee that if UA was Tuscaloosa University and we were called UA the roles would be reversed). Pawwwl just doesn’t get under my skin all that much. I guess i just find that his show is too much of a joke for me to take seriously, and it just reflects poorly on their school more than ours.
I'm an Auburn fan because I go to Auburn. You're a Bama fan because you went to Walmart.

I agree.
…people associate the state of Alabama with the University of Alabama.

which is why we have the standardization...
That all Alabamians are below normal intelligence….just kidding, I couldn’t help myself.

It certainly does have its cons.
What is amazing is how Auburn has distinguished itself despite her name. Now I haven’t done extensive research, but the athletic success (in major sports) of other public universities named after municipalities is limited, and Auburn may be the shining star in that group:
Clemson, Memphis, Tulsa, Houston, Miami (OH), Richmond
Auburn seems to have fared the best. I might have to look into this a little more.

If that's the criterion...
Clemson, Memphis, Tulsa, Houston, Miami (OH), Richmond
Do you count UCLA or not? That school up in Berkeley gets the distinction of being called “Cal”. USC refers to a region.
But the biggest one that I see as missing from your list came to mind because of one that’s on it: Miami (FL).
Well...
Think about how small the town of Auburn is. UCLA is one of the biggest cities in the U.S. and Miami is also pretty damned big. Yet Auburn, we’re pretty tiny out here. I will go out and say we’ll the smallest town winning a national championship in the BCS era so far.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Well, to be fair....
You listed Houston (which is bigger than Miami):
http://www.nationsonline.org/oneworld/most_pop_cities_usa.htm
Although, I’ll grant that they’re a mid-major.
Clarification
I did specify “public universities;” Southern Cal and Miami (FL) are both private.
The California schools are all technically the “University of California-X” or “Cal State-X,” and I think that distinction is important.
When you have “University of Municipality” (or, worse, “Municipality State University”), your influence is usually diminished. All of the schools I listed above have this problem to varying degrees. Auburn and Clemson have done well to juxtapose themselves with the “University of State” schools within their borders.
Auburn’s inclusion in the SEC (the only non-state named school in the conference besides token academic school Vanderbilt) has helped her tremendously, 2004 notwithstanding.

Too funny. This is an instant classic.
Someone link me to Finebaum’s Facebook page so I can see where he mentioned it. I found one fan page, but it wasn’t his.

This is a stupid person
I don’t know nor care who Jay Coulter is, I have heard a little something about Updyke, but I can’t get past the stupid statement that the state of Alabama has trouble getting over the embarrassment of Taylor Hicks. That statement shows Jay is a stupid, misinformed man. Mr. Hicks has brought a lot of positive attention to the state and to the college he attended, Auburn. He has worked hard to help the state, and is a businessman there. Most are very proud of him and he is a great talent. Perhaps Jay should take the time to find out a little about all Taylors work instead of just shooting off his mouth. I have always enjoyed Mr. Finebaums show and since Jay has shown himself to be ignorant, I don’t think I have much faith in anything he says.
I don't think
you recognize a joke when you see it, especially the self-deprecating kind.
I think even with Jay that Taylor’s place in Auburn musical lore is a solid #3, right behind Jimmy Buffet and Toni Tennile.

Well, now that you bring Tenille into it....
…then maybe Jay’s joke COULD have been better.
But poor Suze:
That statement shows Jay is a stupid, misinformed man.
Perhaps Jay should take the time to find out a little about all Taylors work instead of just shooting off his mouth.
Irony notwithstanding, if she could please pick up the courtesy phone, Mr. Kant would like a word with her:
… when [a man] puts a thing on a pedestal and calls it beautiful, he demands the same delight from others. He judges not merely for himself, but for all men….He blames them if they judge differently, and denies them taste, which he still requires of them as something they ought to have; and to this extent it is not open to men to say: Every one has his own taste.
Don't
be making jokes about Toni Tennile. I will fight you.
The Captain is fair game, however.

Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
I think I do
Up until now I’ve always been able to recognize a joke especially the self-deprecating kind, since I use it a lot, but that didn’t sound like one to me. Lumping someone in with George Wallace as an embarrassment simply means he mentioned what he thought of as two embarrassing people.
Now if he meant it as a joke, fine, but tell him not to interview for any comedy writing shows.
It seems
It seems that since I posted some remarks were added ahead of mine that I sure didn’t see before. I just want to make plain that I put nothing or no one on a pedestal. In fact I really can’t stand people who could be perceived as belonging on a pedestal and I do not demand that others see things as I do or like what I like. In fact I could not care less about Jays musical tastes. But it seems Jay think all should agree with him about what is or is not embarrassing. My complaint had to do with what I perceived as a lack of knowledge about what is or is not something that has to be overcome as an embarrassment.
Seems Jay has some problem with criticism also.
Susan, you raised a valid point but ....
…. If you visit this site often you will notice that Jay Coulter has thick skin. He rarely if ever makes comments to defend himself from criticism, which he didn’t do this time either.
Jay’s policy has always been to allow open disagreement. A lot of blog site moderators do not operate that way and consequently sometimes commenters with different opinions find themselves banned. Not so at Track Em Tigers. Everyone’s take on things are welcomed here. And your thoughts are welcomed as well.

Please read the following in your best Jane Hathaway voice from the Beverly Hill Billys.
Well I never….how dare some one make a mockery of Taylor Hicks….he is a fine upstanding man and a wonderful representative of the state of Alabama…..he has the voice of an angel and anyone who doesn’t like his music is just jealous…..the absolute nerve of some people..hmmmph.

Sorry
Apparently the finer points of aesthetics don’t interest you. Fair enough.
I’ll just leave these:
Jay has shown himself to be ignorant, I don’t think I have much faith in anything he says.
Perhaps Jay should take the time to find out a little about all Taylors [sic] work instead of just shooting off his mouth.
Jay is a stupid, misinformed man.
and remind you that you got your feathers in a ruffle about a perceived negative statement about someone.
Oh, and you’re a fan of Finebaum….where of course, you’ll never encounter that.
How does that all add up?
Wow Susan...
you’re the ignorant and idiotic one. Don’t let the door hit you where the Good Lord split you.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
If you really like Finescum that says all anyone needs to know about you
Only the ignorant and uneducated can listen to that show. His callers are ridiculous, he only takes calls from the most ignorant rednecks, (from both sides) and he fans the flames all the time. He is making a ton of money off people like you and laughing all the way to the bank. You are being played. Susan, if it is true that you really like Pawwl, you need to really get a life. IMO, please take your comments to another blog.
I just hope they erect the Saban statue/altar/shrine before he leaves
Oh boy lol
Oh brother don’t you all sound intelligent. You should like the people you say is calling Paul. And Todd that was a great Jane Hathaway impersonation but definitely not me. haha
I have probably heard Paul maybe 5 times and I enjoyed the shows I heard. I doubt his callers could have been less creative than good ol Sparkey above.
You guys have been fun, I’ll check in again sometime. And to think I was rooting for Auburn this year.
And I still say Jay took an unnecessary dig at someone he seems to know very little about. That seriously detracted from the rest of his article. But whatever floats his boat.
hoping n praying
that you all made it through the tornado alright.
haha..
think I’ll prnt this out….in case I run out of toilet paper and need to wipe my butt.
Real Funny...
You sir are nothing more than wasted sperm and space.
