It’s Time for Auburn to Go on the Offensive
Auburn officials need a public relations makeover more than any program in the country. I've got a suggestion: How about opening the doors to Saturday scrimmages at Jordan-Hare Stadium?
After weeks of reading about armed robbery, disorderly conduct and alleged pay-for-play schemes, it would be nice to watch some action on the field - you know, kind of get our minds off the meltdown.
While the Auburn Athletic Department continues to take more incoming hits than Colonel Gaddafi, the defending champs continue to practice in silence. I hear there's a pretty good quarterback race, though I can't confirm.
During these weekend events that still manage to put hundreds in the seats at Jordan-Hare despite the lockout, media members are placed in a holding room in the bowels of the stadium. I'm serious. Yet the athletic department continues to complain about negative coverage.
I wonder why?
Let's do away with closed scrimmages. It's ok during the season; but in early April, does it really matter? Is Auburn secretly installing the wishbone offense? It's time to use some common sense...
Now that fans have had several days to digest the HBO Real Sports segment from last week, the question is, what does it all mean? How about a big fat NOTHING?
There's no arguing the allegations by former players hurt the image of the program. But after months of having its ass kicked up one side the internet and down the other, is there really much left to damage?
You basically witnessed four guys who left Auburn on bad terms whine about being mistreated and then say they were paid illegal benefits by boosters they cannot identify by name. That's a good one.
The NCAA can investigate until the end of time. Good luck on uncovering those cash payments. It's hard to track down something that never existed. The real losers are the four clowns who had their 15 minutes of fame and woke up this morning alienated from the Auburn program forever. Ask Eric Ramsey how that's working out for him.
Stanley McClover lost the most as a result of Wednesday night. A guy who had one of the most magical days in Iron Bowl history can no longer show his face on the campus that made him famous. Now that's sad and pathetic all at the same time.
It's doubtful any sanctions will come from last week's television program. The characters are less than believable and when you can't put names with money handshakes, then you really have credibility issues. Damn those sneaky boosters!
What Auburn does face is a real public relations issue. The Real Sports program may have been unfair. Those guys involved in the armed robbery certainly didn't represent what Gene Chizik has worked so hard to build. Cam Newton by all accounts, truly knew nothing of his father's antics.
Unfortunately, at the end of the day, perception is every bit as important as reality in the world of college athletics. It's like that with anything in life.
It's time for Auburn to act. It's time to spend money and bring in professionals who know how to go on the attack and defend Auburn so these things don't happen. It's time to bring in skilled media professionals who can protect the Auburn brand.
Auburn is too good to let outsiders break it down. School officials can either blame others or do something about it. Now is the time to act.

Thanks for the article.
And you’re absolutely right, in that AU’s department appears — to us fans, at least — to be overlooking the PR issue.
Boilerplate denial/“we’re taking this very seriously” statements serve as acknowledgments that there are accusations, and do little (if anything) to actually refute them.
You’re right about there not being much left to drag through the mud. One thing I do get a kick out of, is logging in each day, and seeing the confidence poll in the upper left, dipping.
Obviously we’ve got some fans of other teams torpedoing it (as I doubt AU fans’ confidence is really at 45%), but it underscores the fact that we’re an easy target right now.
I just wish there were more of a response; but it’s not my area of expertise, and I shouldn’t criticize the people who manage our athletics for a living.
Good read. Thanks.
In all honesty,
I have a new respect for Eric Ramsey. Of course, I don’t like what he did to the program, but at least he didn’t levy empty accusations. These clowns won’t name names, which to me means that they made it all up. And for what? Personal gain. Maybe if Stan had stayed in school, he would have a better comprehension of the Auburn Creed.
There was a time when the current PR strategy would work. Not in the day of 24-hour sports news, during a ‘slow’ part of the football year. I agree $$ needs to be spent on PR. And God help any boosters that are found with their hand in the cookie jar…..

My opinion of Eric Ramsey is no higher than it ever was....
which is about as low as it gets. I for one remember all of the transcripts of the infamous tapes “coach I really need money…can’t pay my rent….can’t feed my kids…etc, etc, etc….”
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.
Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
I didn't mean to imply that Ramsey is OK...he's not.
In all honesty, I think that he pitied people into giving him the $$ and then turned it against them. But, sadly, he still had proof, unlike these yahoo’s……

This is what I am trying to say
and have been doing so poorly. Sometimes, I get thoughts stuck in my head and they have a hard time being articulated in a meaningful way…….
Ramsey’s actions were condemnable, but because, he had actual proof, there was a beginning and an end to the investigation. Yes, Auburn was left with a black eye that we are still recovering from, but we took our punishment and moved forward. Because, so far, there is no proof to the HBO allegations etc., there will likely be no concrete ending, just a lot of open-ended questions—which will loom large over the Program for who knows how long…..

I understand your meaning...
but I still have an inordinant amount of disdain for Ramsey….he and his wife made such a spectacle of commencement when I graduated I will forever remember him for what he is…a piece of shyte.

I finally watched
Real Sports last night and do believe that boosters probably paid at least some of these guys. That’s not to say that I believe all of their stories, but we all know what goes on behind the scenes. Proving it is another matter however. I can’t believe that coaches were complicit in it, but if they were, we would deserve everything we’d get if it could be substantiated.
The segment about the ‘street agents’, who attempt to pimp out kids, is pretty disgusting. It seems more prevalent in basketball, but with the whole Cecil/Kenny Rogers fiasco, there’s little doubt that it’s arrived in football, too.
Good column, Jay. Time to bring the program out of the shadows and into the light—even in just this tiny way.

I must admit to Auburn cheating in the past..
I do so, not just because some of it has been proven, but that it’s a fact that there was a time that most schools did. That does not excuse those facts, nor does lessen the sting.
That being said, I truly believe Auburn is running a clean program now. Since Jacobs took over as AD, efforts have been made to truly educate the boosters about the effects of cheating, none of them are good for the school. Financially it’s suicide to cheat, especially with the past history that Auburn has. You could throw a ton of names in there as well, that would be in the same boat as Auburn.
The big questions are, how do we effort to stop the boosters from having contact with these players? Can you isolate future players from the street agents?

If I'm wrong and others of you are right...
At this point, isn’t the best way to stop all of the media aggression towards Auburn is to have a terrible season? No no, I’m not saying do that on purpose. But, if this turns out to be another 2008, wouldn’t that stop the constant mud flinging at us? Or, would ESPN do a few specials on the fall of Auburn? That’s not including most of the local media let alone mentioning Thayer Evans.
I agree with you Jay. The idea of secret scrimmages during Spring is ridiculous. I think it comes back to the depth chart causing us to have closed off practices. Then again, maybe it’s not about the media that Gene closes off practice. I mean think about it, agents do have an easy time posing as some small time journalist. I did it myself to get in to E3 in Los Angeles.
Still, it is time Auburn starts reshaping its image. You would think that eventually the attacks would stop, but from what we’ve seen, I am not so sure. It is time we influence things on our end. If we just remain quiet, this will continue and people will slowly start leaving the program. Hell, ask John Callipari’s people for help. That guy is still really popular and look at all the cheating he’s done. I don’t have any perfect remedies, but I don’t think silence is the answer anymore. It makes us look guilty.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
If you really want to be known as
the school that definitely cheated but was able to avoid getting caught, you should hire Calipari’s people.
Otherwise, I’d say that would be a bad move.

There isn't this shit storm following him...
The point I mean is, Kentucky isn’t getting wave after wave of bad publicity and we all know they’re cheating. If he can not get attacked every five minutes, anybody can.

I disagree about the open practices.....
Chizik holds closed practices…that’s been his policy since day one and the press can either get used to it or walk around with a chapped ass all the time. I don’t think Chizik should change what’s working and I don’t think he needs to cow-tow to the media….what may have or may not have happened prior to his arrival shouldn’t dictate what he is about. Would I love to see and hear the intimate details of every practice and scrimmage? Well hell yeah…but then again that won’t help AU in any way and I don’t think it will do all that much in the way of positive PR….the people writing the bad press (with the exception of Evan Woodberry who is conspicuosly missing with his daily reports the past couple of weeks) are not the people showing up for practice anyway. I do agree about the AD department needing to do some PR work to counter the negative reporting but I fail to see opening practices as any sort of answer.
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.
Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
The whole “world against us” mentality is garbage. Auburn deserves a significant amount, but not all of the negative coverage. Ya’ll gamed the system when you knew there were questions about Cam’s recruitment when most teams would have ruled in ineligible before the season started (when ya’ll found out his dad was shopping). it worked out, but it contributed to the idea that winning matters more than a clean program. 4 of your teamates commited a long list of felonies. again, you’re fault and not espn’s or hbo’s. 4 of your former players come out saying that they were paid. I don’t belive all of it, but are ya’ll saying there’s NOTHING to these stories. I don’t see many auburn fans saying “i hope it’s not true but let’s take a look at our progam and what’s going on.” Ya’ll shoudl be worried about the nexus of people involved in your progam (boosters and BOT) that have cheated in the past.
I see alot of auburn fans talk about what can be “proven” and alot of straw man arguments directed at the players…..NOT much talk about examining whether all this smoke that’s been swirling has some merit.
For the record i think Chiz runs a clean program. But any Alabama fan can tell you it’s the boosters and the people outside the AD you have to worry about. I hear too often “everybody cheats”
Look, it’s the sec. I see it as everybody probably driving 80mph in a 70 when it comes to cheating (100 dollar handshakes and stuff everywhere im sure). The perception is auburn is the sports car flying by going 95. If you want to make a PR move, get PAT Dye the hell away from your program. Having your coach say something is garbage (when last time he said it about the cam situation the miss state bidding turned out to be TRUE) is not an effective PR strategy.
I think Chizik goes with his feelings on that.
I’m not so sure that’s our PR spin. And yes, get over it, everybody does cheat but give it up. The Newton thing wasn’t Auburn it was Mississippi State. Many of us want Dye away from the program, unfortunately that’s easier said than done. Your REC, as powerful as they are, are incredibly dirty. Do I have proof? No I can’t prove it, but there stuff going on I just can’t prove anything. Julio’s Escalade comes to mind for starters. Can’t prove it though, that’s problem. It’s not what you know, it what’s you can prove to the NCAA.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
the Pat Dye reference yellowhammer
I have been thinking that myself this year. This guy knew what was going on and allowed it to happen and brought shame upon the program. People tend to remember things like that. The fact that he was around so much this past year bothered me. Mostly because nobody even mentioned that regardless of his winning percentage, he caused a real stain on the program. Auburn would be wise to keep him at a distance. I don’t think it has anything to do with our current batch of allegations by any means, but what else can we really do? Open practices? Is that supposed to distract the media? Hire a public relations firm? I can’t see how anything can really help. I’m pretty tired of feeling I have to defend this football program. If Jay Jacobs is doing his job, we have to do more than win, we have to do it right and he is the guy that’s ultimately responsible for that.
I have always disliked Pat Dye......
I was friends with his daughter Wanda many years ago and from knowing her and from knowing what he did both to the progam and the way he behaved at home….I just never shared the love that most alumni have for him.
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.

one of PR's most subtle nuances is... exactly the opposite of what this article suggests
i remember learning about it in Logic class … freshman year at Auburn. “extinction” is one of the most effective ways to shed behavior that you want to discontinue.
=don’t give media bullshit any reaction whatsoever… if so, you are just feeding the frenzy. the more you put yourself in front of a microphone, the higher probability of a mistake. i completely disagree with this strategy equalling guilt.
if Auburn learned anything this 2010 season… it was that defending the program should be done in a clear, concise, direct way… and nothing more. speculation can’t be battled with additional speculation.
PR is an art… feeling out a situation, timing of reaction, and then the maturity to be bigger than the other guy and connect with your priorities, and move on. that is the way you can use the challenge to move forward. i think it is a HUGE mistake to climb out on a limb that you haven’t the confidence/proof to climb out on. it is important for Auburn to look itself in the mirror, and brand itself exactly that… the bigger guy. look the media dead in the eye and yell STOP!… and then be done with it.
there are all kinds of ways to protect yourself… ways that you can lose yourself in the process. Auburn needs to continue to refine itself and get better through this…
you do it and you wipe it up.

jay... finebaum mentioned you name for the 3rd time in a couple weeks today...
he sited this article.
you do it and you wipe it up.
Paraphrasing Finebaum
PF mentioned this article and even read portions of it. He scripted his position to show this as an example of Auburn fans that are in total denial to the prospect of NCAA violations.
Then he mentioned this article as an example of how the AU “press” are finally questioning Chizik.
After reading this article it is obvious that PF just took a few statements out of context in order to help script another volatile position for his listeners to squabble over.
Nothing new.
that is accurate. have you ever gotten into a argument / conversation with your wife / husband
…and gotten the feeling almost immediately that the other across from you is hearing only what they can argue fluently… ??
finebaum has not been on the offensive in a while. it is relative uncomfortable territory it seems. he manages only a few pieces that are clearly designed as ‘set up slam dunks’… but has been challenged into defensive mode of late.
certainly since the video came out of his juvenile community college rant…
i think he’s been sounding less and less in control of his own show. the kick back(s) and opinions, spats and reasonable questioning of the finebaum stance…
in many regards, the show is more interesting than it was before. i think PF is getting aught playing too many sides
you do it and you wipe it up.
It's true...if he were really interested in the opinions of Auburn fans or any references to this site,
he would interview Jay on air. Allow a conversation. Oh wait-he doesn’t have editorial control over Jay and won’t be able to slant the story any way he wants it…..Sorry, I just now took my cynicism pill, should be working in a bit….

How the hell....
Did he get that the Auburn Media is starting to question CHIZIK out of this article? Are you kidding me? Why would they be questioning Chizik anyway. He had nothing to do with this stuff. Will the man go to any lengths what-so-ever to make his show worse than it is now?
If Something did happen, which is still debateable, then I say Bring it out into the open and lets deal with it. Disassociate from the booster(s) and better educate the others and players as to why its a bad idea for these idiots to run wild.
"Wishful thinking is not the same thing as objective evidence." - jdhinsc
Jay I'm gonna disagree
Closed practices are mo’ betta’. There are too many “reporters” with agendas to create controversy. The coaches would spend too much time stomping down molehills (like practice fights).
While AU is cumbersome handling some of this stuff, a low key approach is better. No need to create a large profile that just becomes a larger target than we are already.
If we’ve done nothing wrong, then all of this will pass. At that time we should come out and do an "I told you so’ while specifically pointing out all of the media idiots and their wild speculations.
I'll add my thoughts on practice.....
If you truly believe that you are telling the truth. If you are truly convinced that those whom you work for, are doing things the right way, and if you have nothing to be ashamed of, TO HELL WITH THE MEDIA!
Keep doing things as you have always done them. The recipe works, so why let someone else ruin the finished product?
After all, the media is where most of this problem is stemming from. Not all of it mind you, but most of it.

I gotta say engaging the media is a lose, lose.....
While everyone says we’re in denial, what they forget is that despite being the subject of the biggest media bashing in the history of collegiate athletics (I’m fairly certain, 6 months of non stop negativity makes us the kings)…..and being more closely examined than a proctology patient…they have found nothing. It took them all of two days to get the goods on Oregon and Ohio State but they still don’t have anything tangible on us…..after 6 friggin months.
If anyone is in denial its the bashers, who keep praying and hoping that something will surface to crucify us with. What they forget is that we have been getting attacked by Alabama for over 40 years so we’re kind of used to having a bullseye on us. I think we have learned from our mistakes of the ’70’s and are, at the very least, buttoned up at the institutional level. Engaging the media and trying to do a PR campaign will just be spun as a sign of our “guilt” and that we trying to re-hab our image. We can’t escape the fact that the media has no interest at all in being fair to us, or telling the truth or even our side of the story. 99% of the country has no vested interest in Auburn and sees us as a villain and that is who the media intend to feed with their viscous bile….regardless of the facts.
The truth is the media and the public at large WANT to hate us. People want to hate on something, and when you can serve up the medias favorite food…..“backwards redneck southern insitutions”…boy howdy its feeding time at the hog trough. Nothing plays as well and generates as much animosity as good-ole boy southern corruption…..and I’ll be damned if that isn’t EXACTLY how we are being portrayed. So there is no use in trying to engage the media in this….they have their agenda and nothing we say or do is going to change that. We can’t prove something didn’t happen….all you can do is impune the integrity of the person making the accusation or sue them for libel….both of which are not attractive options for a univerisity. I’m afraid all we can do is ride it out and continue to point out the facts and that their is no evidence to support our detractors claims. They can cry all they want about “drawing conlculsions” based on what people say, but the fact is there is no proof of anything, and ultimately that is what the NCAA needs. And all the negative media coverage in the world doesn’t change that.

This is my first post here, so please bear with me.
I’ve been an Auburn fan all of my life, but went to Penn State, so it’s the main team I root for and follow. I have been defending Auburn since the first allegations came out about Cam Newton(and of course get ridiculed for it). But I was wondering if y’all could answer at least one question for me.
Is Auburn being investigated by the FBI in relation to Cecil Newton? I haven’t read or heard anything about it, but fans on other blogs keep referring to an ongoing FBI investigation.
I’m sorry if you’ve dealt with this rumor before and I missed the post.

At no time whatsoever has Auburn University, nor any of it’s athletic department personnel been under investigation by the FBI in relation to the Cam Newton recruitment.

More lies and innuendo....
What your “freinds” have been skewering you about is rumor spread by a well known TigerDroppings (LSU) post. Everything in it concerning Auburn is specualtion, rumor, conjecture and outright fantasy. It is about as scating and ruthless as it gets, the compilation of every ugly rumor ever spread abut Auburn…but is all just a bunch of bullshit. Google Colonial Bank and FBI investigation and you will find that no actual news coverage that would tie any of these rumors to Auburn. Lowder and Colonial Bank are under investigation for securities fraud but hauling Auburn into it and saying they are under investigation is another matter entirely. As is usual nobody is concerned with facts or accuracy, just spreading the most sensational rumor they can dream up.

That's what I've been saying all along,
but it’s nice to get it confirmed here. I hate that TigerDroppings site. I have said all along that if any of the information was true, it would have come out by in a reputable new source. Thanks for answering my questions.
This is BSD, the crazy stirs itself.
It took the media about 2 days to prove the Ohio State scandal...
It took them less than a week to prove the Bruce Pearl scandal at Tenn. It took them about 28 days to prove the Reggie Bush and USC scandals(Less than 24 hrs. on USC basketball).
It’s been over 6 months since we started hearing about Cam, and more than three months since the coach at Thibodaux told his lies, and still no evidence on Auburn.
I think that says enough.
