Not A Rumor Anymore - Corey Grant Transfers To Auburn
It had been rumored for the last two weeks that former Opelika High School standout Corey Grant would transfer from Alabama to Auburn. Well its not a rumor anymore. The (2010) No. 5 All-Purpose back in the nation confirmed today that he would become a Tiger.
Grant said he didn't leave Tuscaloosa with any hard feelings; he just likes Auburn better and feels like Auburn would be a better fit for him.
He took a redshirt last year at Alabama and will have to sit out a year. He plans to enroll in school on Monday and walk on at Auburn.
Grant is the second top rated back to transfer from an SEC school in recent days. Mike Blakely transferred from Florida last month.
There has not been a news release yet from Auburn. However, Nick Saban said on June 9th, "Corey Grant is a fine young man that we really wanted to stay in our program,"
Whatever the reason Corey, welcome to the Plains.

I have a question...
If he likes Auburn so much more than Alabama, why didn’t he just go there in the first place? Plus, with all of the running backs we have now, why did we take him? I guess this means we have given up on Keith Marshall. I’m truly disappointed realizing that. The kid is the best player in this class period.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
I think he had a tough call to make between the two back in high school.
He made his choice his junior year and now that he has been at Tuscaloosa a year he has come to the realization that Auburn would have been a better fit for his skills. Also he may not feel thye log jam is as croweded at Auburn. Who knows?
I’m still glad to have him. He is willing to sit out a year, pay his way, and walk on. There have been others to leave over there and step down a division to play but he is willing to sit out a year, pay his way, and walk on.
Marshall may be a harder sell now but I am not counting him out till he faxes his LOI.

I guess man...
Sorry, I just don’t see this as great news. For me, he had time to figure out which school was better before he went to Alabama. I mean, it kind of looks like sour grapes on Grant’s end. He doesn’t play so he transfers to Auburn. In addition, now the top running back in the country may not come out to Auburn with the added competition. Auburn is as loaded as anybody in the running back department. Though, I’m still not sold on Blakely after the shoulder surgery so I’m happy in that sense. Do we know yet if Blakeley is going to have to sit out a year after transferring from Florida? What about Mason? What kind of performance has he had at practice so far?
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Florida gave Blakely a release but ...
As I understand it he still will not be eligible to play till the 2012 season.
As regards Tre Mason I certainly have no in side scoop but I have heard he is fitting in just fine.
BTW, didn’t mean to repeat myself in above comment.

Blakely has petitioned the NCAA to be able to play this season and is still waiting to hear...
whether he will play this season or not.

I like what I've seen of Mason
He runs like Lesean McCoy, not a track star but really quick and has a slashing style.
I hope he does well in practice. It’ll be good to have him in the rotation this year.

ummm
How is he allowed to come to auburn ?? I thought that once you left a school you had to go to a smaller school or something ???
whatever the reason Im sad to see him leave Bama but hope he finds a good fit at auburn. I wish nothing for the best for any player regardless of where he goes

It can be done.
Ole Miss’s QB transferred in from Oregon and played last season. The ‘one and done’ scenario still is ok by the NCAA but has been nixed by the SEC after this year.

The SEC stopped athletes from transferring somewhere for one year?

Call it the 'Second Houston Nutt Rule"
After Nutt signed 37 players 2 years ago, the SEC put in recruiting class limits to 28 last year and 25 for next year.
Then after he signed Jeremiah Masoli last year as a graduate student, the SEC passed “Houston Nutt Rule #2.” The NCAA permits schools to accept one-year transfers that had already graduated elsewhere but now Mike Slive says “not on my watch.”
I think it was a bad move but that’s the SEC new rule. NC State QB Wilson can play in the SEC this year but a player with a similar situation will not be allowed to do that next year.

But I thought
in order to be able to transfer… you had to have finished the 4 years at the school then finish up a different major at a different school…. like what masoli did.

Happens all the time.
Ryan Mallet played in 11 games at Michigan then transferred and played at Arkansas. He applied for an exception so that he would not have to sit out year but it was denied. He sat a year and then played for the Hogs. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3378777

It sounds like he isn't getting a scholarship at Auburn
It says he’s going to walk on at Auburn, in which case he wouldn’t need to sit out a year.
Yes he still has to sit out a year.

If Saban restricted him from accepting a scholarship from AU as part of his condition of transfer....
then Grant would have to set out two years to inorder to accept a scholarship from AU (strange but true) but since Grant is coming as a walk on and not accepting a scholarship he can go where he pleases and only have to sit out the one year per NCAA rules. In other words….he probably asked Saban to release him to go to AU and Saban said no……so rather than sit two years he is walking on…..had Saban said yes to the transfer then Grant could come to AU as a Scholarship player and sit one year.

I won't comment on your mental capacity...
but the article above states he will sit out a year. :)

it just reads weird to me
I guess I am a bit slow ha.
It said something about sitting out and that he planned to walk on so I was confused as to if he was sitting out a year or walking on now. I wasnt seeing it as he is walking on and still sitting out a year.
either way… hope the kid is happy. at the end of the day thats all that matters :)

Sorry LastMile
My bad, it should have been clearer. I should have said he “sits out the first year and has to walk on the second.”

He walks on the first year....
and can’t dress for games….his second season he is eligible for a scholarship and can play….if he were granted a transfer unconditionally from Saban he could be on scholarship this season while sitting out the mandatory year.

Thanks Todd for making it even more clearer.
I knew he was eligible for a scholarship the second year. I still should have written it up a little different. If Last Mile was confused, there probably were others.

Don't really blame Saban for not allowing Grant to Transfer to AU unconditionally......
considering Grant was going to his biggest rival but I’m glad that Grant can afford to walk on otherwise he would have had to go to JUCO or another school altogether.

Agree
And I’ m not so sure if I were coaching that I would allow a player a release to go to any SEC opponent much less my # 1 rival.

I dunno man
Im not gonna lie … there are times im easily confused, with this being one of them. Though in my defense Ive never really been clear on what it takes to be able to transfer and play….. but hey thats the NCAA for you.. when are they ever really crystal clear.

Your not the only one that gets confused about NCAA rules.
That’s why schools hire Compliance Directors – to keep up with all the legalities of NCAA sports.

I can't see this as anything but good...
not costing us a scholarship (yet), we basically get to try him out for free, all purpose back in Malzhan’s offense makes for lots of options, and if he does turn out to be good, we kept him away from our biggest rival.

An Auburn RB in a Blackout Bulldogs Jersey!
I know I had a few too many last night, but what a bizzarro world I woke up in…
Congrats on a solid pick-up. That RB rotation is going to be ridiculously deep in the coming years. Is McCallebb a junior this year?
Yezzir
I’m excited we get McCalebb for two more years.

Unless
He has a breakout season and gets it in his head to go pro. See also: a certain receiver that could have benefited himself and the team by sticking around another season…
Darvin Adams probably realizes this now.....

I may be alone in my sentiment but ...
Adams is a good example of why I think football underclassman should have a window around draft time to see if there taken and then accept or decline just like in baseball.
I think the baseball model stipulates that a player must be a junior and 21 yrs old to be drafted; then they have a deadline date to say I’ll go or I’ll stay.
The lockout really killed a lot of guys opportunity to hook up with a team as a free agent like Coleman did last year.
Really sad. I think Darvin had a chance at All- Conference or better next year.

I agree 100%.....
and I have always thought the same. An underclassman should be able to test the waters and comeback to college if he doesn’t like his prospects.

We have had too many RBs before
Auburn has had issues before with having too many running backs. Turned out kinda great for us. As long as we can find a way to put two of them on the field at the same time it should be a good thing. I mean Ronni Brown and Cadillac were an awesome duo. Perhaps this will be something Auburn toys with in the future. I would love to see Auburn return to some of the power formations.
Can never
Have too much talent. I have a feeling we’ll be running the ball even more these next few upcoming years.
Just a sidenote: I don’t believe that is a picture of Corey Grant. He wore 15 in highschool

Agreed
And thanks, I replaced picture with one that I am certain is Grant.

Sorry guys...
I’m just not buying into this one. I’d much rather have Keith Marshall or Jovon Robinson. I hope this kid transferring to Auburn doesn’t hurt AU that much with either one of those two kids. They are way too good to give up for a red shirt guy from UA. We’re the defending national champion, we don’t take anybody that can’t start for the best.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Grant was a track star in high school
and judging by the video here, he sure look good on returns. He might just be a heck of a punt returner for Auburn.
He doesn't have Marshall speed...
I’m not happy about this one. By the way, I have a saying about win-win situations. Somebody always loses.

Todd...
Do you not remember how excited I got over Mike Dyer coming to Auburn? You said you didn’t really get that excited about freshmen coming in…Grant just isn’t that kind of player. I’m much more excited about Tre Mason and what he’ll do at Auburn than Grant.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
