The Top Media Personalities in College Football
With the anticipation of college football building, now's the time to revisit a topic we addressed a few years ago: Who are the top college football media personalities? Outside of the players, coaches and pageantry, the on-air personalities shape our Saturday's more than anything else.
Who are your favorites? Below is my Top 10 along with some honorable mentions. Feel free to share your list with us. It's all subjective. In fact, several who made my list of worst personalities two years ago, now find themselves among the best. Here goes...
1. Kirk Herbstreit (ESPN) - The Ohio State alum has built something of a love/hate relationship with Southern football fans. Sure he's a little full of himself and something of a pretty-boy, but it's hard to argue with his success. He's arguably the top opinion maker in the sport and has the best seat in the house each Saturday, serving as Brent Musburger's analyst on ABC Sports prime-time games. Give him credit; he picked Auburn to go undefeated last season heading into the Iron Bowl. He caught a lot of crap for it; but in the end, proved he knew his stuff.
2. Chris Fowler (ESPN) - Widely considered the voice of college football, fans know their program has made the big-time when Fowler rolls into town. As quarterback of the top-rated College GameDay program, Fowler is as smooth as they get. He's also the most likeable guy in the game.
3. Tony Barnhart (CBS Sports) - Barnhart's standing is a regional one, but if you are a fan of the SEC, you want to know Barnhart's take on the story. As a writer for The Atlanta Constitution, studio analyst for CBS Sports and host of The Tony Barnhart Show, he's the top authority on southern football.
4. Gary Danielson (CBS Sports) - When CBS Sports tapped Danielson to be the network's SEC analyst, most fans thought the suits in New York had lost their minds. The former Purdue quarterback faced a lot of skeptics in the early days, including myself. Fast-forward to now and he's arguably the best in the game. He's won over legions of SEC fans and there's no one more prepared for a game each week than Danielson.
5. Bill King (Sirius/XM Radio) - If you're not a subscriber to satellite radio, Bill King is reason enough to sign up. Host of the hugely popular morning radio show, On Campus with Bill King, the program is a must for those who need their daily college football fix 365 days a year. King is the voice of college recruiting.
6. Brent Musburger (ABC Sports) - For years the voice of the NFL, Musburger has stepped in for the retired Keith Jackson as the top play-by-play man in college football. His trademark, "You are looking live," sends chills down the spines of fans everywhere. While this year's BCS Championship Game was not his best work, he's still at the top of his game. Heck, he's even inspired his own drinking game.
7. Rece Davis (ESPN) - Sure he's an Alabama graduate, but there are few better in the studio than Davis. Plus he's married to an Auburn graduate, so that evens things out somewhat. His midnight program, GameDay Final is must see television for fans. His one-liners are the best in the business. The best thing about Davis: He's fair when it comes to Auburn.
8. Lee Corso (ESPN) - Love him or not, Corso has become a college football institution. He's the Joe Paterno of college football personalities. Waiting to see what mascot head he'll don at show's end each Saturday has become appointment TV for fans. With likely only a few years left on College GameDay, he's a talent to treasure.
9. Verne Lunquist (CBS Sports) - Old Verne. Say what you want, there's few things better in life than listening to his voice on a fall Saturday afternoon. He connects with SEC fans in a way few others can.
10. Erin Andrews (ESPN) - The reigning beauty of college football, she's become the main attraction on College GameDay. The best part about Andrews is that she's not only beautiful, but knows the game better than us. In other words, she's the perfect woman.
Honorable Mentions (in no particular order): Todd Blackledge (ESPN); Wendi Nix (ESPN); Craig James (ESPN); Jack Arute (Sirius/XM Radio); Dave Neal (ESPN); Mike Leach (Sirius/XM Radio); Brad Nessler (ESPN); Tracy Wolfson (CBS Sports); Robert Smith (ESPN); Mark May (ESPN); Phil Steele (Publisher); Desmond Howard (ESPN); Jenn Brown (ESPN)

Your list is out of order
Allowing Verne and Gary to be on here is a travesty. They only go with what’s trending – as evidenced by three years of Tebow and a year and a half of UAT. Gary makes only the most obvious of assessments and Verne calls the game slower than Eli Gold. I listen to the Auburn Network and leave the television on mute when Auburn plays on CBS – it’s almost as bad as Jefferson Pilot.

Do you have to be in Alabama to get the Auburn ISP Network?

or
listen online at one of the stations here. This worked well for me when I was in memphis. Problem is it doesn’t sync up well with TV broadcast.

Rec'd for truth.
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.
Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
I’m with you on Verne. He has his faults, but there’s something soothing about him calling a game, or 15 and 16 at Augusta.
Honestly the only one I would gripe about is that you gave honorable mention to Craig James. That dude shouldn’t be anywhere near this list. I’d replace him with Chris Speilman in that part of the list.
I think the only person on the list that I disagree with is Musburger.
Danielson is my absolute favorite however. He just get’s it. I love listening to him on Finebaum’s show (in fact it’s pretty much the only reason why I listen to Finebaum).
I think it is a 4-way tie for second for me with Herbstreit, Davis, Fowler and King. I’ve got so much respect for Herbstreit being able to put aside is obvious fandom when making points or calling games. Ohio State fans may think he is intenionally hard on the Buckeyes just to make sure he doesn’t show favoritism and they may have a point, but he is such a big ambassador for that program I’ve got to think it’s worth it. To a lesser extent Rece shows the same professionalism. He makes a few good natured jabs to Bama rivals but he’s a class act as well.
So since I ditched Musburger I need to replace him with someone…I’m probably in the minority, but I’m a big fan of Jesse Palmer. I feel like the dude knows his stuff, and he seems like a class act as well. He uses his Florida experience as a knowlegde base, and doesn’t seem to pick favorites.
"I know the quarterback has a strong arm, but...I mean the ball's not gonna outrun ME" --PP7
If you like Jesse Palmer....
then no wonder we don’t see eye to eye on alot of things. Jesse Palmer would look good with the heel of my boot tatooin his face……and I mean that in only the nicest way.

I have to agree with Todd...
Palmer went out of his way to try and sway voters to keep Auburn out of the BCS Championship.
Can't abide by the love for Danielson...
But your list isn’t far off from mine.
Fowler is at the very top, followed by Davis, then Nessler.
I might agree with you on Palmer — and that definitely is a minority view there — but the WWL has forced him into that meathead dynamic with Craig James. When he focuses on the game, he’s surprisingly tolerable.
Since Herbstreit’s backed off the Bucks a bit (as opposed to five to ten years ago), he’s been terrific.
I don’t mind Musburger, even if he has some of the same flaws that make me hate Danielson (namely an inability to get off of the one major talking point for a team — “HEY, VERNE, THIS TEBOW GUY IS THE TEBOWEST TEBOW THAT I’VE EVER TEBOWED.”….to be fair, Musburger never seemed to get tired of mentioning that Shipley and McCoy were roommates at Texas).
Sexist comments aside, Ron Franklin is great — I can see why SEC fans are so high on him.
Is it wrong, though, that I miss Keith Jackson?
Admittedly, it's a matter of personal taste..
And I’d agree that he lost a bit on the farewell tour.
But this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8zZRBTOcnY&feature=related (first half of it) is an example of what I liked.
And when the moment was right, he knew when to turn a phrase: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OV-tVEbwreY.
But in both cases, he knew when to quiet down and let the play sink in.
I embrace the rule that TV people should have particular TV gifts
Thus Andrews is horribly underranked. The rest of these guys could (should?) be radio stars.
What no Fbaum?
The turds will be up set at that one. They and he both know that he is at the top. Says so in his program’s intro everyday. Also no Brando? His ego says he deserves better.
For me, I like Bill King and Tony Burnhart.
Sure...
Here you go. What was I thinking with Brando? He ruined himself when he started appearing on Finebaum.
Good list
I have to agree about Danielson. He has won me over. He is sometimes very critical of players and coaches during the game, but I find that refreshing. He and Verne make the best SEC team since (IMHO) Ron Franklin and Mike Gottfried.
As much as I do like Lee Corso, it’s time to hang it up because of his stroke from two years ago. His brief Heisman snippets last December proved that to me. I hate it for him. His tombstone one day will read “62-0”.
Mark May would be in my top 5. His analysis I trust. I wish they’d give him more but slobbering Lou is always trying to steal the show.
Herbie is the best guy out there. His ability to severly criticize his alma mater proved to me that he’s no homer and has more un-paralled objectivism than any former player in the business.

Ouch

Sad, but true. I was never a huge fan of his schtick, but it was impossible not to feel sad when he’d hit one of those verbal stumbling blocks last year.
Mark May is another personality that I could like, if only they pulled him out of that “good cop, bad cop” setup with Holtz. He’s just playing to the part, but he comes across as a smug ass most of the time (and take that from someone who knows what being a smug ass is).
Since
you’re a new fan, do you know the running joke that Auburn fans have with Corso with the 62-0?
Somewhere back around 1996, Fresno State was coming to Auburn to play, and on Gameday, Corso had the nerve to pick Fresno in an upset. Auburn beat them 62-0, and now everytime Gameday is in Auburn, and sometimes even when it’s somewhere else, Corso sees the signs showing that score. He’s acknowledged it in the past and laughs it off and has joked that his tombstone might end up with that depiction.

Actually, I did NOT know that one...
At least he’s had a sense of humor about it then.
He always did seem like a nice guy; but post-stroke, it’s been tough to watch him. Then again, I guess it’s all anyone could hope for: to have a career doing something they love until they can’t do it any longer.
(I’m including the coaching too…it’s all football).
Musberger and Barnhart are too high. Both rely on ego and personality too much and seem less prepared every year. Rece Davis, Brad Nessler and Todd Blackledge are too low. Davis is always very prepared, Nessler is almost perfectly suited to television play-by-play with an understated performance and Blackledge is improving every year.
Danielson sometimes forgets the college rules (CBS needs to do a better job of having producers tell him when he’s f’ed up a rule interpretation) but his ability to break down the in-game Xs and Os is unparalleled in CFB right now.
Fowler (as hard as it is to believe) is the dean of CFB analysis right now. Unfortunately, GameDay is over-produced and too long, making it hard to watch.
Mark May and Todd Blackledge:
two under-appreciated analysts…IMO. I also like Todd’s eating exploits when he covers the games. I don’t like the idiotic questions that Wolfson always asks b/f or after half-time, which are likely her producers and not her own (hopefully), otherwise she would be further up on the list for me.

The other SEC Saturday on CBS play-by-play guy.

I would have....
Todd Blackledge and Mark May on the list and leave off Verne and Gary.
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.
Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
I like ...
1) Phillip Marshall
2) Tony Barnhart
3) Bill King
4) Rob Bramlett
5) Chris Lowe
Not partial to any of the TV guys. Lowe was stricken from my list after last season.

Good point on Bramlett....
He’s gotten much better over the years. I only ranked national guys, so I left Alabama media off the list.
I'll give this a try..
And each of you can laugh at any/all of them if you want.
1.) Gary Danielson – simply the best at the X’s and O’s in the game today.
2.) Ron Franklin – pre-humiliation of course. He could call a game better than any since Keith Jackson.
3.) Kirk Herbstreit – Fair and prepared as a guest commentator, not so much as a cover/commentary. This may not be fair, since he is stuck with the worst college football play by play to get top billing.
4.) Rece Davis – Anyone who can shut both Mark May and Lou Holthzz up has my vote!
5.) Verne Lunquist – I am still partial to his golf commentary, but he is pretty good at football too.
6.) Erin Andrews – Duh!
7.) Chris Fowler – ESPN Game Day is unlike anything I can remember, and a college football fans dream come true. Even if it is a little long winded at times.
8.) Charles Davis – The only TBS guy I even want to hear talk. But he is usually prepared.
9.) Tony Barnharrt – Mr. College football, need I say more?
10.) Since recruiting is as big as it is nationally, I have to include Phillip Marshall.
With all that said, I would rather hear Rod Bramblett call a tennis match than listen to most anyone else on my list even say good morning. Except Ms. Andrews of course. I am a man after all. Or as Brad Paisley sings, “I’m still a guy”.

Does Phil Steele have a place?
May be say #11? Just curious since your on the team.

Unfortunately, as a personality...
Stat guys are usually a different breed. In that they tend to be great at numbers, and not so great at speaking. Phil does a really good job on talk shows as an analyst, just doesn’t strike me as a “media personality”. I think he would have his own nationally syndicated show if he were a personality.
You gave me the toughest question to answer I have had in a long while. I had to try and be descriptive, and walk softly at the same time.

Hopefully...
…..I don’t notice the TV guys. If I notice them, it’s probably because they made a mistake. Like Musburger calling us “the War Eagles of EWAH-burn.” I really don’t like listening to Davie or Holtz, either.
……I enjoy the CBS broadcast because of Danielson. I learn things listening to him. On the other hand, the CBS game ticker is pretty primitive compared to what ESPN provides. Only occasionally does CBS show it. You get a lot more information out of ESPN, including how many timeouts each team has left.
......Drowning in cool elixir.
Erin Andrew's for #1
She’s much more fun to look at than Verne Lundquist

You mean...
you don’t like Verne’s dreamy jowls?
(Yeah, hi-def really brings that home in a way I’d never hoped to see.)

avert your eyes!
Verne Lundquist in hi-def!
Oh, and nobody mentions Lou Holtz? Oh, that’s right, we were talking about people we liked…. Truly the most annoying feature in college football last year was the segment with Mark May and Lou Holtz arguing before “judge” Rece Davis. I hope they don’t bring that back again. Then again, watching how frustrated Mark May would get having to argue with Lou was pretty amusing.
