Even the best things in life come with annoyances. College football is not immune. There are some people in the world who bring everyone down, whether it's college football or Friday night happy hour. Today, we take a look at the Top 10 Most Disgusting Figures in college football.
While most of the list is comprised of media members, membership is open to anyone. The list obviously has an Auburn slant, but I'm sure fans of other programs will agree with at least some of our selections. Here goes:
1. Paul Finebaum (Radio Host) - Was there ever any doubt? Any man who allows his callers to trash innocent college girls on national radio not only deserves to be number one, but probably has a reserve seat waiting in hell. He brings out the very worst in fandom and is a huge cancer on the game of college football. He's almost single handedly turned the Iron Bowl into an English soccer match. Fortunately, many in the national media are taking notice.
2. Thayer Evans (Fox Sports) - Evans story is a cautionary one for all writers. By letting his strong personal feelings infect his job, he's now widely regarded as a joke nationally. The viciousness in which he went after Cam Newton last season was startling considering he writes for a national publication. Then again, Fox Sports is run by News Corp. which is owned by Rupert Murdoch, and we all know how they conduct business. While Newton has moved on, Evans is left to pick up the pieces of his career.
3. Pete Thamel (New York Times) - Better suited for The New York Post than The New York Times, Thamel did his best last year to bring down Cam Newton. There's something unsettling about a writer from the nation's largest paper working tirelessly to bring down a college student. Thamel's insinuations in those stories were nauseating. It's been widely speculated that former Florida coach Urban Meyer worked with Thamel in breaking the story. The Times covering college football is akin to Vanity Fair writing about NASCAR.
4. Tim Brando (CBS Sports) - Has anyone in the college game fallen faster than Brando? Once regarded as the best studio man in college football, his weekly appearances on the Finebaum program along with his daily radio show has ruined his reputation. Who knew his views were so out in left field? Spend five minutes listening to Brando and you quickly realize how highly he thinks of himself. A word of advice: stick to giving game highlights at halftime.
5. Joe Schad (ESPN) - Has any national reporter missed on stories as much as ESPN's Schad? When you see his name attached to a story, take it with a grain of salt. Because of the four letters before his name, he's able to create firestorms that take months to put out. How much longer will ESPN keep him on the college football beat?
6. Brooks Melchior (Sports By Brooks) - The biggest joke in all of college football blogging, Melchior wants so bad to play with the big boys. He never lets the truth get in the way of a good story. His recent story on the Auburn Tigerettes had some of his own loyal readers questioning his work. A Georgia graduate, he can't hide his hatred of Auburn. Fortunately for Tiger fans, few in college football take him seriously. I considered leaving him off the list completely because of his lack of reach in the media world.
7. Jessie Palmer (ESPN) - Yet another reporter who can't put aside his petty college hatred. Last fall, the former Florida quarterback took every opportunity to down play Auburn as they moved up the BCS ranks. Watching scenes of him get emotional holding a rose in his hand on The Bachelor is more than enough to pull his man card and send him into exile forever.
8. Jim Delany (Big 10) - Like your mom always said, be careful what you say about others, because it may come back to haunt you. So is the case for the Big 10 commissioner. Only a year ago, Delany delighted in taking shots at the SEC and its problems with the NCAA. Fast forward to now and his conference is widely viewed as the most corrupt of all. Have there ever been two bigger phonies than Jim Tressel and Delany?
9. Andrea Kremer (HBO) - In the latest book about the ESPN Empire, Kremer's bosses heaped praise on her reporting skills while she worked in Bristol. Talk about a detached bunch! Her recent HBO piece about college football cheating was one of the great hatchet jobs of the past 25 years - and that's saying a lot. Kremer was clearly only interested in the four former Auburn players who had vendettas against the school. Several former Auburn players came forward to say they had spoken with Kremer to dispute these accusations. How many of their interviews made it on air? Zero.
10. Lane Kiffin (USC) - Never has anyone in college football made so much money for doing so little. Look up the definition of charmed life and you'll see a picture of Lane grinning. Although gone from the SEC for more than a year now, he continues to create chaos for the conference and his old program, Tennessee. His arrogance is hard to watch.

Here’s my list
10. Brent Musberger- please retire already. Your mouth already can’t keep pace with your brain and you apparently don’t feel the need to research the games you broadcast. How many times have you called us the “War Eagles”??
9. Kiffen – nuff said.
8. Pete Thamel- he is still going after Auburn, but I will concede his report on the Chizik clash at the NCAA meeting wasn’t too bad. I actually agree it was newsworthy, but don’t read anything into it.
7. Saban- ruthlessness towards his own players, oversigning, medical hardships. Its guys like Saban that give college football a bad name.
6. Parents of recruits – I hate to say it, but think how much grief we’ve endured becuase of Cecil Newton. Regardless of how you feel the whole PFP scenarion went down, the bottom line is Cecil had his nose where it doesn’t belong……much like Harland “Peaches” Winston and scores of other folks that are “just looking out for their kids”. There is a point where that ends, and thats talking with boosters and “friends of the program”. Every parent should know as much about the coaches and program their child is being recruited by, but when you start negotiating for the kid, I think you cross the line.
5. The Drive By Media- the includes, Evans, et al. All the guys that are looking for a scoop regardless of the facts or the ramifications. Do they teach ethics in journalism anymore?? They must not.
4. Dan Mullen – In my opinion, Mullen concocted the whole PFP scheme to ensnare Cecil Newton and ensure that if Cam wasn’t playing for him, he wasn’t playing for anybody. What a tool.
3. ESPN, the network – from only playing highlights of games in network, to sensationalizing every story like the Jon Benet Ramsay case, by pursuing a make money at any cost agenda, ESPN has turned into the Fox News of cable sports.
2. Harvey Updyke – talk about your obnoxious fan on steroids. The Mark David Chapman of college football shows you what happens when obsession goes too far. Of course if not for #1, we may have never heard of him

I know that he admitted to being involve in one....
He did not admit to coming up with the plan….thats what the folks at MSU say and what others like you assume. Just because a writer says it doens’t make it true, there is no evidence to back up the accusation and a ton to point to the fact that MSU concocted the whole thing. Namely the fact that they kept recruiting Cam after Bond alerted MSU that Cecil “supposedly” asked for money. At that point they should have RUN from Cam, but they kept after him….wonder why??

Dan Mullen was clearly the driving force behind creating the PFP scheme. After all, wouldn’t you rather pay your players to come to your school when you can normally get them to come there for free? Come on Mandingo, get in the game!!

He is literally the walking talking version of everything corrupt and sickening with football. Good list
For the most part I agree with the list and certainly see no problem with Jay writing it. The site is called Track ‘em Tigers. If Mr. Crimson and others don’t like it they can create their own list over at RBR, or wherever else, of reporters they think have Auburn bias like….um…..Charles Goldberg?…..and um….well anyway, that is their fish to fry.
Plus, the list doesn’t deal with just guys who are anti-Auburn. It is people who are bad for college football. Auburn has never had any problem personally with Lane Kiffin. But he is bad for the sport, just like Paul “might as well be Jerry Springer because I pander to the underbelly of society” Finebaum. Tim Brando is an all around jackass and Jesse Palmer starred in a reality show that might as well be on Lifetime. If you guys want to stand on the side of those people, be my guest. You certainly won’t have to run against me for President of that fan club.
Good List, I am afraid however,
that this list can be perceived has too Pro-Auburn POV.
With that said, I think that Finebaum being national will hurt him in the long run. He claims to run a show about CFB and the SEC, but if anyone listens objectively for 10 minutes he’s nothing but a pot stirrer serving a pro-Alabama slate daily. It sickens me that people across America think he knows what he’s talking about. He’s built his entire radio career on being an ass kissing fraud to Alabama and Alabama fans.

Not a Good List
While I don’t post often (if ever), I do read this site quite a bit and usually respect the work done here. However I feel like it’s fair to suggest that this list comes off as nothing more than crying over spilled milk. And before anyone calls me a troll, I have two degrees from AU, attended over 400 AU sporting events, and love everything about our Alma Mater.
My main contention with this article is that it comes off as “If you ever wrote or said something bad about Auburn, you are here.” The problem with this is that you titled the article as “The Ten Most Disgusting Figures in College Football,” implying a global view of the game. I agree with you about Finebaum, Brooks, and maybe one or two others, but one quick google search would show you that there are FAR more “disgusting” people in the game than most on this list. Here’s a few for examples:
Brian Kelly: Had a student filming practice in unsafe conditions where the student subsequently died. Kelly and the Notre Dame brass subsequently attempt to, and successfully, sweep the entire incident under the rug. This was all done under Kelly’s orders.
Jim Tressel: Not hard to explain.
George O’Leary: First, he faked his resume to Notre Dame. Now his negligence apparently led to the loss of a players life by refusing to allow breaks/water during spring practice.
I still think that you guys do great work overall, but you completely missed the boat on this one.

I don't disagree with you about it being acknowledged, but...
I still think that it was negligent to title the posting one thing and then clarify what it really is later. That, to me, is no worse than writers like Brooks who write things like “AUBURN IS PAYING FOR RECRUITING” and then it turns out to be non-story because the girls actually work for the athletic department. That is where the majority of my dissent lies. I understand that this is an AU site, but that doesn’t mean that misleading headlines should be tolerated.

I disagree about Jesse Palmer
As a Nole, I feel he has always been fair to FSU in his analysis, he’s called a couple of our games the past few years. I would understand if he’d sound bitter towards FSU from having to play against them in the late 90’s, but he isn’t.
Maybe he’s mean about Auburn, and I’m missing something. But from my perspective (and a number of other Noles I’ve asked), he seems like a cool enough cat.

and Cam didn’t deserve the Heisman vote because of his Alleged pay for play. He has always found a way to take a shot at AU and it wasn’t until Cam won the Heisman and AU was going to be in the NC game that he stopped.

He just wasn’t a believer in Cam and Auburn….whatever….there were a slew of them. He always seemed to be the guy who was given the “counterpoint” role, when someone would says something positive about Auburn, Palmer would offer the “counter”. Everybody has a role to play.

Looks like I set off a fire storm today...
It’s funny how Alabama fans say they pay no attention to Auburn, yet when I write a story like today’s, I find myself having to keep the Bama trolls off the site despite not making one mention of their school. Do you think they feel the need to take up for Finebaum?
As I said from the onset of the article, this story has an Auburn slant. It was not written for Georgia fans, Florida fans, etc. This is my list of most disgusting people through the eyes of Auburn.
Finebaum has taken quite a few shots at me today and well, that’s ok. If I give it, I have to be able to take it. Early in the show he made the comment that I listed everyone who’s ever said anything negative about Auburn. That’s simply not true.
As the Cam Newton story unfolded last year, there were literally hundreds of reporters who wrote about the case. Most of them were objective. The ones I reference above were not. There are thousands of disgusting people that surround the sport. For Auburn, these are the worst of the worst.
For other SEC fans, their list probably looks a lot different, although I bet Finebaum tops more polls than not. Thanks for the comments today. They’ve been entertaining to read.

Perhaps it was because you labeled it “The 10 Most Disgusting Figures In College Football?” Even with an “Auburn slant,” that is not what this list is. If you labeled it “The 10 Most Figures Auburn Fans Are Most Disgusted With In College Football,” I doubt you would have gotten the responses.

Jay, you’re getting a bad deal by many commenters; you clearly say his list has an AU slant, so I don’t get the criticisms. You put together a good list here based on your opinion and last year’s experience. I disagree with a few, but hardly think that is any reason for heavy criticism. Btw, I believe Finebaum may drown puppies and kittens. A very reliable source told me.
