Thoughts on the Start of College Football

Barrett Trotter's anointment as starting quarterback was hardly a surprise last week. The redshirt junior continues to receive high marks from those inside Auburn football. Speaking with someone who's seen more than a few practices this year, it was maturity and comfort in Gus Malzahn's system that proved to be the difference. That said, the battle with Clint Moseley was a draw, with experience winning out - barely.

Don't be surprised to see three freshmen start on the offensive line in Auburn's opener against Utah State. Word on the inside is that Greg Robinson, Christian Westerman and Reese Dismukes have better than average chances of having their name called by the public address announcer when starting lineups are announced.

I have to say I thought it was a joke. When pictures began appearing over the weekend of Georgia's "new" uniforms for the season opener against Boise State, I thought a new Arena Football team had come to town. For a team that prides itself on tradition, these uniforms sure make them look like upstarts.

I can't imagine why any traditional power would embarrass itself by pushing tradition aside and going with a look that can only be described as ugly. Thank you to Jay Jacobs and Gene Chizik for not tinkering with tradition. We can all handle slight modifications; but promise us we'll never have to endure what Georgia fans will see on September 3rd.

While this is still a developing story, you may want to reconsider LSU as your pick in the SEC West. The altercation that four LSU players were involved in early Friday morning in Baton Rouge now appears to be much worse than first reported.

Auburn Undercover senior editor Phillip Marshall is reporting that quarterback Jordan Jefferson could be charged as early as today with two felony assault counts. If so, that would likely end his college career.

I wonder if Carolina Panther quarterback Jimmy Clausen will give up his number two jersey number now that Cam Newton is number one? I'm not holding my breath.

Why is it that every time ESPN makes reference to teams under NCAA investigation, they mention Auburn? Did I miss the official letter or inquiry from the NCAA? And why is Miss State's name never mentioned?

Last week was a bad one for Mullet Nation. First, their boy Danny Sheridan was outed as just another blow hard and then word came that two of their assistant coaches may have been involved (while at Miami) in the biggest scandal to hit college football since SMU back in the 1980's. By the way, why are state reporters not asking more questions? Hmmm.

I've never been one to watch Michigan football, but I'm looking forward to seeing what former Auburn offensive coordinator Al Borges can do with the Wolverines. He remains one of my all-time favorite coaches. He poured himself into the community during his time on the Plains. I'll always pull for him.

I'll stop short of picking Arkansas to win the SEC West, but something tells me they are going to have a big year despite the loss of running back Knile Davis.

How high will the heat be turned up on Georgia coach Mark Richt if his team drops its first two games against Boise State and South Carolina?

What is it about Tennessee coach Derek Dooley that's so annoying? I can't put my finger on it.

I wonder if new Florida coach Will Muschamp feels any additional pressure considering what Gene Chizik has done at Auburn over his first two seasons. Both have taken similar paths and now Muschamp will be expected to win quickly.

Many people around college football like to say the NCAA will never hand down the death penalty again. I'm not so sure. If these infractions at Miami prove to be true, I think there's a strong likelihood the program will be shut down for a time. Don't forget, Alabama was given strong consideration several years ago.

I really hope Auburn will consider playing Troy in the coming years. I know there are plenty of reasons not to, but it sure would be entertaining for the fans. Would it really hurt anything?

The mentioning of Auburn is a CYA tactic...

They know they screwed up on the reporting and handling of the scandal involving MSU and their rogue booster organizations. It’s easier to keep Auburn’s name in the equation, than to apologize for the outright lies.

What a bad week for college football

First Congrats to Barrett. He has really worked his tail off, as has Mosely and I’m very comfortable with the ball in his hands. I think if he plays within his capabilities and uses the awesome array of weapons around him, he will a fine job. And I won’t be surprised any of the young freshman start. They were supposed to be the best in the country and as long as they have the strength to compete in the SEC, I am sure they will do fine. If they are the best we have I say let’em play.

Miami….. was anybody really surprised?? How does a program that only draws fly’s to its games remain a national power? I have no sympathy for anybody related to the program including Al Golden. Al, are you telling me that a school that only draws 30K to its home games is capable of maintaining a top tier D-1 program?? Cleanly? Heads should roll all the way down….starting with the Queen herself, Donna Shalalah. She was supposedly brought in to clean up Miami, and from what I can tell it only got worse.

And of course with any cheating scandal Auburn will always get mentioned, its now defacto pop culture history. If it keeps up, Auburn legal should seriously take a look at any actionable processes available to them, because what is going on, is clearly libelous and defamatory.

DAWG uni’s??? You know my thoughts. Gross, funny in a sad way, and Uncle Phil has a new whore to pimp. I wonder if Richt prefers syrup or jelly?
And Richt is certainly digging himself a big hole with the fan base. Lose to Boise in those clown suits and the heat will come to a boil.

LSU….sounds like somebody forgot to check on the inmates. 15-20 players out past curfew brawling in a parking lot outside the bar (I swear I’m not making this up) Shady’s?? Good googy moogy, what the heck is going on down in Red Stick? I will reserve judgement until more information emerges but that sure doesn’t sound good. Although losing Jefferson won’t hurt TOO much with Mettenberger waiting in the wings. LSU has plenty of talent….always have…Les just needs to pull the right levers to get them where they need to be… but if they end up losing 15-20 guys to suspensions thats somethin else. Not good no matter how you look at it.

Speaking of not looking good. Alabama assistants from Miami?? I actually worried about Tubs because of his Miami connections and how he started out trying to import that thug behavior (remember jumping on the Tiger Eye at Red Stick…..and getting killed?) Well same thing goes for the Bama assistants. And Yahoo is supposed to be dropping a bomb on a SEC West team(s) soon, so is this a possible prelude? All I can say is “GULP”.

Two weeks to game day and I can’t wait

What is the Yahoo rumor?

and where is it being talked about?

by AUstronaut on Aug 22, 2011 9:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Nobody is really talking about it right now but.....

There was a report 6 weeks ago that Charles Robinson at Yahoo was going to break a story right before the season started that was a “10” on the “Oh Crap” scale of NCAA infractions that involved a team in the SEC West not named Miss St or Arkansas.

This has led to rampant speculation about who that program is, but it may have been Miami since its hard to imagine a story topping that. But who knows. If it was Auburn and involved Cam, its hard to believe that MSU wouldn’t be involved SOMEHOW. Anyway heres hoping we aren’t involved because when Yahoo nails you, they have probably got the goods.

I heard the rumor without the SEC implications.....

I think the Miami thing is the “10” story.

I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.

Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.

by Todd92 on Aug 22, 2011 12:06 PM CDT up reply actions

I was of the same impression as you, Todd.

I think that the Miami story IS the big Yahoo story. The fact that it implicates current coaches at SEC schools, may have been where the SEC-connection comes from. I guess only time will tell. If they have another story up their sleeve, they’ve got that stuff locked down crazy tight.

by Tiger on the mountain on Aug 22, 2011 12:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Well I'm hoping that is the case....

But the only folks saying that this “IS” the story are Alabma folks, who are scared dungless that the NCAA is coming to say hello to coaches Pannunzio and Stoutland and check into their recruiting practices, since they apparently had no problem blatantly breaking the rules at Miami.

The fact that they were able to keep a lid on the Miami story says volumes about the credibility of Danny Sheridans NCAA source statements. His sources know the bagman for Newton but know nothing about the mountain of infractions incurred by Miami? Geez, Danny, why were you holding on to all that info?? Oh, I forgot, you have to protect your sources.

The Miami story is THE story.

That it was rumored to be an “SEC West team” was debunked weeks ago.

Well thats good to hear.....

Where did it get debunked? I’ve googled this story 10 ways to Sunday and haven’t seen much other than the brethren of the SEC West telling each other how bad they’re in trouble.

For what its worth, I hope this Bar fight thing turns into nothing.

by Col.Angus on Aug 22, 2011 3:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I can't provide a link...so TIFWIW

But basically one of the yahoo guys confirmed “The 10” story while also stating they’d never release “teasing details” like its an SEC West School but not such and such. Since then there has been much speculation that it was an ACC school all along.

I think the bar fight thing will turn into nothing as bar fights usually are. One dude smudges another dudes puma, they both bow up and a fight starts. Who’s to blame?

to pretend the LSU bar brawl 2011 is anything like your ... run-o-the-mill deal is missing the entire point of this summer...

we’re not in kansas anymore. these student athletes are clearly on notice. JJ & Co. will get what they deserve… just like the 4 AU thugs this summer.

still, i don’t think this affects LSU much. i have a feeling Miles was going to give JJ a quarter or 2 to prove he was the guy for 2011… and was planning on a quick yank job if JJ couldn’t make it happen.

who are the other 3 LSU players that were in the fight?

you do it and you wipe it up.

by buddy Ro on Aug 23, 2011 4:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Well i agree that they'll get what they deserve.

However, it likely won’t be what you think they deserve.

A bar fight is a much different animal than armed robbery. It’s hard to prove who the aggressor was in a bar fight. And I think that’s where the rub is. The longer this story goes, the longer it seems that a single football player (not Jefferson) was involved with a single non football player. Everyone else rumored to be involved was trying to break those two apart, and caught some blows while doing that.

It’s not unlike every other bar fight in the history of the planet.

As of now, I wouldn’t even say there were “3 other” players in the fight. It was one guy who started crap with one football player. Others were only involved to the point of trying to break it up.

Why is it that every time ESPN makes reference to teams under NCAA investigation, they mention Auburn? Did I miss the official letter or inquiry from the NCAA? And why is Miss State’s name never mentioned?

Miami has been under investigation for nearly a year and has not received a LOI. Also, I believe that North Carolina just received its LOI very recently (nearly a full year after they came under fire).

They keep mentioning AU because AU is still under investigation, as confirmed by the conversation coach Chizik had with the NCAA’s VP of enforcement.

The investigation into the recruitment of Cam Newton is not over, agreed. That Auburn is under investigation for the recruitment of Cam Newton, the NCAA has already stated that “Auburn has not been found to have done anything wrong in the recruitment of Newton”.

It really doesn’t matter if they are investigating us or not to be honest, if information comes to light we will get nailed. If not, haters are going to assume guilt anyways. We’re just going to have to wait it out and hope everything played out the way Coach Chizik said.

Playing Troy

There is no reason to not play Troy, if you consider we have Samford on our schedule this year. (not that I think either is advisable)

Then again, playing USA or Jax State wouldn’t hurt anymore than when UA played GSU… cough cough. (still unbelievable to me)

I would like to see AU play more teams like VT, Missouri, Maryland, Pitt, Purdue… even if it’s teams not at the top tier of their BCS conference, we should play more BCS conference teams and less Sun Belt teams… and NO FCS teams.

LSU plays one in state school every year. Auburn should consider the same. In two years there will be 3 FBS teams we could play (USA, UAB, Troy) besides UAT.
