What Do You Know… Newton Can Play Football

Something shocking happened over the weekend. Apparently, Cam Newton can play football with the big boys. After enduring months of scrutiny from guys calling themselves draft experts, Newton went out on Saturday and looked like well, the top pick in the NFL draft.

Watching coverage of the Carolina Panther scrimmage on ESPN, you would have thought Newton was some obscure late round pick that no one expected to deliver. Don't they know Cam always plays like this on Saturdays during football season?

Newton dazzled the nearly 20,000 fans in attendance at Charlotte with touchdown passes of 70 and 65 yards. Pro Bowl wide receiver Steve Smith wasn't surprised by the showing.

"He's on his back foot throwing 50-yard passes. I mean, c'mon," Smith said. "I'm not going to sit here every week and say how good Cam is. He didn't win the Heisman Trophy because there was bad counting on the ballot. He won because he's good."

While bottom feeders back in Alabama continue to fixate over him, Newton has moved on to the next chapter. Despite being dogged by desperate Alabama fans hoping for anything to overturn Auburn's national title, Newton keeps smiling.

"In kindergarten they always said kids do something that you want to wake up and do in the morning and enjoy doing that for the rest of your life," Newton said. "I'm under contract for a couple of years so every single day I'm going to enjoy playing football. I'm going to be the person I am and that's enjoying life and playing football."

This has to be devastating for the Updyke Nation.

Panther's coach Ron Rivera remains mum on who'll start, but it's obvious that Newton is the crowd favorite. Competing with former Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen, the crowd booed last year's starter regularly Saturday afternoon.

Clausen's unwillingness to part with his number two jersey speaks volumes about his insecurity when it comes to Newton. Despite wearing the number seven number in college and only sporting the two since last year, Clausen doesn't seem interested in appeasing Newton.

Newton acknowledged on Sunday that he'd asked Claussen to switch and even hinted that they'd negotiated to no avail. It's Clausen's choice, but considering he'd only worn the number for one year, you have to question the guy's motive. Newton continues to play it cool, saying it doesn't matter to him.

The only number that matters is who's starting first on week one. Right now, Cam appears to have a leg up. Stay tuned.

I don't know about you, but I nearly spit my cereal out yesterday morning when I tuned in to SportsCenter to see ESPN hosting a forum entitled, Blueprint for Change that featured Alabama coach Nick Saban and former Florida coach Urban Meyer.

After teasing the segment by going through a laundry list of ills that trouble college football - including the Cam Newton case - host Rece Davis moderated the discussion on how to clean up intercollegiate athletics.

Give Saban credit; he's got a pair considering the numerous photos all over the web of his players whoring themselves for dress clothes. How he participated with a straight face is beyond me. Either he's really stupid or just delusional.

As for Meyer, exactly how many players did he have arrested on his watch while in Gainesville? Suddenly the Pontiff feels empowered to dispense advice. I know it's summer and there's not a lot left to say, but come on ESPN. Is that all you've got?

Two...

…probably. I think he was number 13 at Florida. Cam can go back to number two pretty quickly, I think. None of the other Clausens has lasted long in the NFL.

Some people just cannot......

..resist taking shots defensively. Your writing is absolutely deplorable and indicative of someone who clearly has a jealous burr up your %$^. Saban and company have shown there was no whoring for clothes like you so hope to believe yet you take shots anyway. I eve bet it is a matter of minutes before you, rather than answer, simply delete the post because, like the program in the hands of the NCAA, you cannot and will not be able to withstand criticism. I bet if we all looked back you were probably one back in the day defending Cam and his father with some utterance about “Hey, his father told everyone he did not solicit that deal at MSU so get off his back!” Thennnnn, when he was caught on tape and finally had to come clean, what did you say about. Just hang on a couple more weeks or months and lets all see how this author responds to what is likely to come down the pike……..Shall be very interesting for both he and the Updyke nation as he calls it…..

Scott1965....

maybe you spend too much time on Auburn fan sites to realize it, but the bama faithful have done everything and anything that you describe and more towards Auburn or any other team that threatens to take away what they seem to think is their birth right, in winning the SEC or National Title every year. This has been going on for as long as I have been alive and I’m quite sure a bit longer than that.

Do me a favor. Go back and read your post. It reads like the response of an extremist Muslim who was accused by a Jew of eating some pork. If you are taking college football this seriously then maybe you should seek some professional help. And don’t worry, the government will help you if you can’t afford it….

missed the prostitute reference. Maybe don’t take everything an Auburn fan says too personally and you won’t infer “whoring” only applies to people who engage in illicit sexual acts. So…you know…check a dictionary.

Semantics is fun

I doubt very much that Wallacewade thought the author was accusing the Bama players of selling themselves for sex.

I like your post though “Hey, we insulted your players, but don’t get bent all out of shape about it”, right after you got all upset and implied that people over at RBR are racists.

Autophobic?

I don’t think I’ve ever been accused of that before. Maybe you should….you know…check a dictionary.

by elfcrash on Aug 9, 2011 4:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Why else would you keep coming back to check up on us?

Maybe because your autophobia is caused by your love for what you subconsciously deem to be an inferior institution that longs for the companionship of hardware. You need Auburn sites around you so know how champions feel. Maybe you will have a chance once the power shifts away from South Carolina.

by auburnrosco on Aug 9, 2011 9:51 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm still not completely sure you understand what autophobia is.

But yes, I hang around here just so I can absorb a little bit of the aura of a Champion.

a thousand apologies

but since we’re on the subject of writing funny things I would like to take this time to point out this site is part of sbnation which also hosts edsbs which is run by a florida grad who also runs the Fulmer cup

So Auburn fans taking shots at Urban Meyers players being arrested might, just MIGHT, come up in a few days when the award gets handed out. Food for thought.

Oh yes...

we’re cringing in fear. No, seriously.

I mean, the thought that a humor-driven website with a brilliantly witty author might take some potshots at Auburn has us losing sleep at night.

Does this mean we’ll go on double-secret SBNation probation? OH NO!!!!!!

Mr. Hall himself takes plenty of shots at Florida’s collective rap sheet, so I doubt that some offhand comments in an article here — directed at a former coach, and not the program, no less — will send him careening off into some seething blue and orange rage.

by AU Tiger on Aug 9, 2011 8:54 AM CDT up reply actions

yea

that was a really round about way of saying “you guys are winning the Fulmer Cup don’t throw stones in glass houses” and was unnecessarily too long

okay so for the awkwardness of the comment I actually do apologize ha

by Wallacewade04 on Aug 9, 2011 8:59 AM CDT up reply actions

But I thought...

not hanging out with Charles Barkley was the first rule of living in glass houses.

And besides, Jay gets a pass from me for referring to Meyer as “The Pontiff”. Now I can’t shake the image of him with the miter, atop a Gator-themed Pope-mobile, blessing crowds of Gator fans as they stream through the turnstiles at BHG.

by AU Tiger on Aug 9, 2011 9:03 AM CDT up reply actions

ha

I love Charles, he just has a penchant for throwing people through windows – which frankly is awesome cause I only thought that happened in movies, but no Charles Barkley threw a guy through a window

the word for that, btw, is defenestration

as a member of the catholic church (lapsed of course) I would have to think our southern numbers would increase if the Catholic Coaches in the league started wearing college football themed Pope attires (Catholic Coaches include Saban and Meyer as far as I know, but also, sadly, Mike Shula)

People who live in glass houses should not hang out with Charles Barkley.

by Wallacewade04 on Aug 9, 2011 9:16 AM CDT up reply actions

"Defenestration", I knew...

That Charles Barkley had actually tossed someone through a window, I did not. That’s just turrible— terrible.

As a former/recovering Catholic myself, I’m in love with the idea of marrying football to the church. The clergy have enough color schemes to worry about on gamedaySundays, between the red vestments for Pentecost, the purple (and pink) for Advent — so what’s wrong with adding a little team spirit to Saturday evening mass?

Possible negatives:
- Pipe organ and chorus version of “War Eagle”. Creepy.
- Baptist backlash that leads to ESPN-spearheaded witchhunt into “papist tendencies” of certain AP Poll voters.
- Creation of entire new genre of Auburn-bashing for TKK over on YO DAWWWWWG Sports, including the blaming of all priest pederasty on Auburn’s corrupt culture.

Face Book

I think it was Face Book pictures that got the NCAA’s attention in Butch Davis and his program.
Just because Bama’s athletic dept. says they are clear is not good enough when it comes to NCAA investigations. We will just have to waite and see if this goes anywhere.

by aplains74 on Aug 8, 2011 5:38 PM CDT reply actions

It was actually Twitter...

A UNC player tweeted something like “Lovin this party in Miami with my agent.” That’s not a social media problem, that’s a stupidity problem. Don’t cheat, and if you must cheat, don’t TWEET it.

In their respective times at Auburn, both Tuberville and Chizik have defeated 100 Ducks.

by Nathan Deal on Aug 8, 2011 9:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I am sure you are correct about the Tweet. However, Huntsville Times reported that a UNC player had a picture of all his bling on Face Book and that got the NCAA’s attention. I am just saying pictures of players signing t- shirts at T-Town Mens Wear could result in the same thing.
NCAA has a way of following the publicity.

Good editorial Jay.

The ESPN piece is beyond me too.

by PineMtTiger on Aug 8, 2011 6:38 PM CDT reply actions

By your own logic Jay, how do you explain:

-Photo after photo of your players holding up thousands of dollars worth of cash.

-Recent commits uploading photos of their BRAND NEW vehicles.

-Facebook photos of your HOSTESSES with Reese Dismukes at parties.

-Greg Robinson receiving an iphone during a recruiting visit.

-AU fans on Twitter offering Geno Smith money.

(see my post in the Bama/AU at War? thread)

-And the money quote: “Whatever the NCAA findings are, that’s what we’re going with” by Cecil Newton. If he DID NOT solicit money from *ubarn, why can’t he just publicly state AU DID NOT PAY HIM? It’s one thing to believe a father and son that solicited up to $180k from one school, DID NOT ask for money from the school he forced his son to attend. It’s another thing to to believe he and the university are innocent when he has yet to state AU did not pay him.

If you ask me, that’s way more shady than players signing autographs at a mall (with no evidence of said players receiving any extra benefits in return). By the way, what’s the name of that jewelry store in Opelika that has signed pictures of the employees posing with Newton, Fairley, Burns, Dyer, Savange, and Thorpe? And don’t forget the photos of Cam promoting the “War Cam Eagle” shirt that surfaced last season….
