Sometimes Big Things Come In Small Packages

Daren Bates will lead Tiger linebacking core in 2011.
When Auburn Linebacker Daren Bates was growing up in Memphis, Tennessee he liked to run a lot ... run and collide with objects. "That was always me," Daren said, "When I was little, just run around, hit stuff and keep going." He learned to perfect his collision skills when he started playing little league football.
At 5' 10" and 210 lbs. Bates is small for a D1 linebacker. But Daren has always been undersize; "Ever since I was little, I was smaller than everybody else. I had to be aggressive. That's what I like to do." And aggressive best describes the man that may well be the leader of the Auburn Defense in 2011.
However, Bates was not recruited by the big schools when he was in high school despite playing for Mississippi's famous Olive Branch High School just south of Memphis. He was not even listed on most recruiting sites until right before signing day and then he was only rated as a two star athlete. If it had not been for Assistant Coach Trooper Taylor seeing him play basketball while on a recruiting trip to Olive Branch, he would not be a Tiger today.
Coach Chizik said, "There are always those under-the-radar guys. We really went into some in-depth conversations with his coach and it was my belief that he was very under-recruited. Just by looking at his body and watching him play basketball, we thought that he was one we definitely needed to take a chance on and it's paid off."
After he inked his scholarship Daren still had a hurdle to overcome. He wasn't cleared by the NCAA until a full two months after the other recruits had been going through summer workouts. Yet, it didn't take much time for him to make his presence felt when he arrived on the third day of fall practice.
He immediately made an impression on the coaching staff. Defensive Coordinator Ted Roof was quoted as saying that even though Bates was having to play catch up, he was impressive right off the bat,
"throwing his body around and striking people. He's a guy, however fast he is, he hits you at that speed. He's a guy that seems to show up with the ball a lot."
His play was recognized by the players too. Wide Receiver Kodi Burns said, ""We were in two-a-days and it was like, 'Who is that guy hitting people like that?'" When we got to the first couple of games, he was laying people out. When he hits people, you hear it."
Yes "aggressive" could be Daren's middle name. In 2009 he made the All-SEC Freshman Team as a safety, recording 70 tackles despite playing most of the season with an injured shoulder. After off season surgery, he was moved to outside linebacker.
Even though he had been a safety, he has always had a head hunters mentality. And the move was a good fit for the human ramming machine as he racked up 48 tackles in 12 games at his new position. Daren may be small for a linebacker but his speed and hitting more than made up for his lack of size.
He has been doing all he can in the off season to gain weight but with the pace and intensity he plays with, it has been a difficult task. Nonetheless there have been outstanding small size linebackers in the past who used their speed and hitting ability to disrupt offensives.
When Bates made the move to linebacker, he said he had to seek a lot of advice from veteran senior Linebackers Josh Bynes and Craig Stevens. Now in his third year, Daren will have to be the one to take on the roll of defensive leader and mentor for the younger players.
And since good leaders teach lessons by their example, one of the biggest lessons the new guys can learn from him is to have a nose for the football and the mentality of an aggressive headhunter.
He has already been schooling opposing offenses the last two seasons. And the major thing opponents have learned about Daren Bates is that ...
Sometimes big things come in small packages.

Good read this morning.
Daren Bates definitely has a full speed motor. Sometimes I think he goes for the vicious hit instead of locking up. But I like his hustle and attitude. I’ve heard that Bates might be moved to middle linebacker instead of Bynes’s backup Jake Holland. Do you think that will happen?
It might not be a bad thing...
As you noted, he does like the big hit (and judging by the MNC game, the occasional bit of extracurricular entanglement). The last thing that our secondary needs is coverage that lapses because someone was headhunting instead of keeping coverage.
If he was moved to middle linebacker, the pre-snap responsibilities might be enough to keep his head where it should be — and he’d still have plenty of opportunities to lay on some big licks.
I've read that too
I think that AU Tiger has a good point about it might be a good fit for him. I don’t know though, I think one of the reasons he was moved to OSLB was for his speed on the outside. But we’ll see soon. The coaches may just be giving him some reps there in case Holland were to get injured. Always got to have a plan B.

What a great story Bates has become.....
I remember his first practice, he tripped, literally landed face first, right in front of Coach Roof and Coach Chizik. He got up, and apologized to the coaches, saying “that won’t happen again”.
Bates sure has been a solid performer for our Tigers, and I look forward to his big season he will have this year.
Great write up ATM..

Good write-up ATM
I like these pieces that give us a little more insight into some of the lesser-known names (relatively speaking) on our team. Good job, as always.
Appreciate that Tiger.

Karibi Dede comes to mind...
They gonna be a lot of days when you lay your guts on the line and you come up empty-handed. They ain't a damn thing you can do about it but go back and lay 'em on the line again, and again, and again....You'll keep fightin' like you did today, you'll keep playin' like that, we can build a foundation we can live a looong, long time on at Auburn." -Pat Dye, 1981

Like you my brother……I live for it ATM!
Jake (when he can), Zack, and perhaps Charlie a time or two will meet you there on Friday’s. It appears that the scholly donors are not traveling with the team as much this year. Tigers Unlimited allowed Charles and I to get four (4) tickets each to Clemson, SC, and Georgia. The LSU tickets were not available.
Q?
Bates reminds me a lot of Quentin Riggins? Q wasn’t that big either but he had a nose for the ball and was quick as a cat and loved to hit! Like a lot of us…I think we are going to have a very good product this year.
Quenton is a good comparison.
As regards …
“I think we are going to have a very good product this year.”
Auburn will confound the naysayers!
LSU tickets are hard to come by. I know it’s great to have Jake back from his active duty. Tell him War Eagle for me.

Good read tigerman....
and Bates quickly became one of my favorites on defense for his ability to hit like a mack truck despite being so small…..I think he eventually moves back to safety although not this year unless the LB depth matures quickly. He reminds me of Ronnie Lott…..wonder if he would cut off the tip of his finger to get back into the game?
I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.
Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
Thanks Todd
The Ronnie Lott comparison is very high praise. You can tell I am high on Bates too. I think he is a hybrid Linbacker-Safety. Although I’m with you on-he may be better at safety.

Trackemtigers Meeting
Hey, why don’t we set up a Trackemtigers Meeting on the first weekend of the football season? I’d love a chance to meet some people myself. We could have the meeting before or after the game whichever one is more favorable to you guys. It’s just an idea anyway.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
I would love to meet some of you guys.
However, Sparkey football Saturdays are not that easy for me. It’s a 3 generation family reunion with me doing a lot of work ie. setting up tailgaiting, tearing down and packing up, cooking and babysitting. I still think it’s a good idea. If some of you got together, I could probably get away for a little while. Basketball or baseball games would be better for me or maybe Friday’s on football weekends.

I'd be down (hopefully) at some point if that's ok?
Maybe make a fan post Sparkey and try and set up a time/date?
War Eagle
I cannot wait to see what guys like:
Darren Bates, Eltoro Freeman, and Craig Sanders do to opposing teams. If Eltoro can finally put together a good season we’ll have plenty of head hunters on defense.
War Eagle! Beat Utah State!

I don't think Bates...
….is a lock to start. Holland has been getting the most raves this fall, and you’ve got Evans and Eltoro on the outside to deal with. Bates brings speed. Had a tendency to dive at folks legs too much, last year. He looked a lot better in limited minutes in the spring game.
......Drowning in cool elixir.
Agree and I think Holland is the man to beat in the middle but ...
Until the depth chart is released, not many are locks, especially this year with the low number of seniors. We may know something after tonight’s practice. Also agree on Bates tackling. He needs to improve on it. But based on the individual stats for the last two years, Evans and Freeman have to come a long way to displace Daren at linebacker.
If Eltoro could play every game and practice like he did in the Iron Bowl, he would be a monster. But so far his career has been a model of inconsistency. I like him and I pull for him, he just hasn’t shown yet that he can be there everyday.

bates looked like he had potential...
to be all american at safety his freshman year. He hasn’t looked as comfortable at LB to me.

That's a fair assessment.
It also speaks volumes about his character that he would willingly move to linebacker after his success at safety.

I think Bates was fighting his injury.
He seemed under 100% all season long to me. I’m not sure his body is really able to play a full season at linebacker in the SEC. I do think he can give AU some energy in some limited minutes during the season and one of his hits will probably get the team and the crowd going.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
