Something Special Brewing At Auburn
If you want to know why fans in these parts obsess over the game of college football 365 days a year, let me present to you Saturday afternoon at Pat Dye Field as Exhibit A. What fans witnessed on this hot, humid afternoon epitomizes everything there is to love about the game and Auburn football.
On a day when Miss State and its fans arrived in swarms for its coronation into the SEC elite, Auburn and its band of no-names picked up its 17th straight win. There are many storylines that went into producing Saturday's outcome. You start with a team that has been disrespected more than any previous reigning national champion.
The nation's writers chose to drop Auburn from its top 25 last week, something that hasn't happened this early in the season since 1965. Despite losing only once in its last 10 meetings, odds-makers (including Danny Sheridan) made Auburn a touchdown underdog at home to the 17th ranked Bulldogs.
In full disclosure, who among us gave Auburn any chance after what happened in week one? I told a friend before the game that if Auburn beat Miss State it would perhaps be Gene Chizik's best coaching job ever.
I stand by my statement today.
Is there a better week two story than backup safety Ryan Smith? We hear far too much about players taking money from boosters, getting in fights and other unsavory things. Give me more like Smith's journey.
The sophomore all but disappeared from the Auburn team halfway through last season, missing Auburn's run to a national title. After registering just three tackles, all on special teams, he ran afoul of Chizik's rule book and was written off by most.
Smith battled back in the off-season, coming out of nowhere to claim the backup safety position. On Saturday he made the biggest play of his life and in the end, maybe Auburn's biggest of the season when he stopped Miss State quarterback Chris Relf just inches short of the goal line as time expired.
Chizik couldn't hide his pride when talking about Smith after the game.
"I'm not going to go into any details, but he has had some tough things happen in his life," Chizik said. "He was able to stand up and make a play at the end. For me as the head coach, it makes me like a proud father. It was just awesome to see a young guy come through at the end of the game, ultimately for the win."
Now this unlikely journey heads to Clemson, where in the coming days, Auburn will again be written off and made road underdogs. Arguments will be made that this is perhaps the worst 2-0 defensive unit in college football history.
That may be the case.
I get the feeling that something special is brewing with this team that stats and conventional wisdom can't explain. A win Saturday against a more experienced Clemson team will likely mean a 4-0 start. That's not bad for a group who was expected to win less than half their games.
I bet those guys from the 1972 Amazin's are smiling today. They say history repeats itself. It's much too early to say where this team is headed. But if heart and desire play any kind of role, I like Auburn's chances. I can't wait to see what happens this Saturday.
Auburn football sure is special.

Nicely said.
This team gets criticized to the max. One thing you can’t question is their heart. They have that “never die” attitude. I think this team has a really good chance at going 5-0. The games may be ugly, but in the end all that matters is the final numbers on the scoreboard. Glad to hear some optimism for once! Great post!

An excellent article my friend, I clicked on it because the title “something special is brewing…” is exactly how I feel also. I was a big time Tommy T guy and tbh it’s taken me a long time to really really warm up to Gene C. At the time he was brought in I thought it was a terrible idea but not only has he proven me wrong but he keeps making me look foolish for thinking that, which I don’t mind at all lol. No doubt that was his best coaching job saturday and one of the guttiest heart driven team wins I’ve ever seen be it with Auburn or any other team. WAR EAGLE!
At some point the pundits will have to take Auburn seriously.
Until then, I don’t care as long as those guys leave it all on the field just like they have been doing. Great coaching! Excellent effort! War Eagle!

Nobody takes them seriously. They’re auburn. Bs calls, unprecedented luck, inexplicable plays, controversy, cheating, and 17 straight bs wins, yet nobody cares. Fading away again from infamy back to irrelevance.

May I suggest counseling?
Delusional lifestyles usually start with a potent drug interaction. Sometimes it’s from a legal prescription, still I’ll bet in your case, something went horribly wrong with the mushrooms. You have my sympathy, and well wishes for a recovery at some point in your life.
Until a full recovery is made however, may we suggest that you hold on tightly to the shiny rail in front of you, while the train leaves the station.

(a debatable move, given what you’ve offered us so far) here goes:
They took Auburn seriously enough to rank them such that they earned a spot in the National Championship game last year. That would be right, smack-dab into the middle of the “17 straight bs wins”.
Having watched ’Bama’s ‘09 season, though, I’d have to say I saw a fair number of BS wins in that period, too. There was one in particular that took place around Thanksgiving of ’09. Oh heavens, if only I could remember who they played.
Unprecedented luck? Some would argue that you folks have had an eyebrow-raising amount of success in unlatching recruits from a school that apparently “cheats” and pays its players. I do, SO wonder how you folks do that. I’m sure it’s with that stiff, capstone-instilled upper lip and pure ’Bama pride. Just ask Cyrus.

Nice article, HOWEVER....
let’s not start throwing the word ‘special’ around too early or too carelessly. Last season was special, and a lot went into making it that way. This year has started off on pretty much as expected by Auburn fans, but it is still a little early yet.
These young have a lot of work to do in order to become the team that they can be.
War Eagle! Beat Clemson!
War Eagle
We are only two games into the season Jay.
Let’s not get carried away here. Auburn beat Dan Mullen and Mississippi State. In actuality, he’s only beaten Ole Miss twice in the SEC west so let’s slow down a bit before we start saying this team is something special. Their heart is indeed something special. I agree with you there. Still, I’m not sure we’re going to win 9 games as of yet. I do hope we beat Clemson mightily.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
With all due respect
I don’t think Jay is saying they are special yet Sparkey, only that “special” is brewing. It’s cooking, it’s still in the pot, but if this keeps up, it will really surprise a lot of people. And being at the game Saturday, we sure felt like “Auburn football” is special.

Agree...
Its called confidence. They are building confidence that they can win without Superman. Fortunately….and I do mean that….they are winning ugly, which should prevent any outbreak of SWOLLHEAD. To much confidence in a young team can lead to complacency and failure to recognize mistakes. I doubt our boys are feeling “special” but are probably thingking that IF they keep working hard, good things will keep happenining.
Its up to Coach Chizik to keep them focused.

MSU was a great challenge....
They have a very nice team and are going to win a lot of games this year. LSU better not go to sleep on them because they have a ton of talent. Relf, Ballard and Perkins presented a worst case scenario for us because of our weakness at linebacker. Having to defend against great backs like Ballard and Perkins is one thing, but Relf is just a monster with the ball in his hands. He was so hard to bring down that 290+ lb linemen we hanging on to him hopeing for help, as he crashed through the line. I was impressed with his performance and if he can develop some touch on his deep ball, MSU will be very difficult for even the best teams to beat.
Bottom line, I am super proud of the young men on both sides of the ball but particularly the defense because they kept after it and never gave up despite the beating they were getting. We were like Apollo Creed at the end of Rocky, beaten, battered and barely able to stand but we still beat the plucky challenger. This can’t do anything but help us in the long run as our defense will call on the memory of this game to help pull them through some tough spots in the weeks ahaead.
We still have lots of work to do and we shouldn’t have an ounce of arrogance in our body since we have had to fight for 60 minutes in both games to win. There is no time to let up against Clemson. They will be hungry to prove themselves as well, after the egg they layed against Wofford. They will have double motivation to avenge last years loss AND to be the 1st to knock off the CHAMPS!!! Here is hoping that we continue to limit TO’s and progress on D. I think we can take down our fellow Tigers to the East, but it will require another gutty performance. As always though, I have faith in Coach Chizik to pull the guys through.

LSU will probably win but.....
to say they will have no trouble?? Can’t agree with that.
Unless Relf plays very poorly MSU will give ANYBODY trouble. I’m not ready to coronate the Coonass’ yet. Remember that Oregon piled up the yardage on them….they cut their own throat with turnovers. I’m not putting too much weight on that victory, as impressive as it was. Its very hard to sustain ANY momentum when you give up big plays in special teams.

While I agree that I wouldn't coronate LSU yet, nor count out MSU (they're a good team)...
I fail to see where Oregon “piled up yardage on [LSU]”.
ESPN shows that Oregon gained 335 yards on LSU, and that LSU gained 273 on Oregon.
I’ll remind you that the game was 40 to 20 in favor of LSU with 2:52 left in the game. Through that point in the game LSU had gained 273 yards and Oregon had gained 265. LSU put in their second string defense, played prevent, and Oregon marched down the field for their final garbage time TD to make the final look more respectful.
If 335 yards (or 265 meaningful yards) is piling up yardage, what would you call what MSU did to Auburn’s defense?

Piling up would not have been my choice of words had I been on “Valley” - and LSU does get my vote for class of the SEC so far—- but this is Trackemtigers and my point is they aren’t without their faults. I fully expect to Auburn to get their butt whipped in the Valley —-unless they make stupendous strides on defense. And even then we will probably need LSU to play flat and overlook us.
Just pointing out that not everything is as it seems. LSU is going to need to show me more than once before I start to tremble.
Place, I say, place your bets! Money plays, loser stays! Everyone's a winn - well, not everyone.

I'm not sensitive. Nor am I crying no respect...
I think LSU has a few faults…
LBer play has been weak (although you wouldn’t really know that by the way the defense has performed overall…) I’m nitpicking here…
But, the passing game leaves a lot to be desired…I don’t see us running the table with our current passing game. It will have to improve.
But you made a comment that Oregon, “Piled up the yards” on LSU…And since you are probably the only person in the country who has said that, I was wondering if you considered 335 yards “piling up” or if you were just misinformed about Oregon’s actual production. I’m assuming it’s the latter.

Again….a little sensitive aren’t we???
If it makes you feel better I amend my comment to LSU allowed 330 yards, which is enough to lose a lot of games.
Likey?

No, I don't think it is...
Had Mississippi State beaten us, I do believe they would be trouble for LSU. Unfortunately, they circled the wagons, the calendar and everything else for us again this season. If nothing else, they’re going to be far too deflated and beat up after that game with us to give LSU a tough game with short rest like that. In addition, I disagree with the idea that MSU matches up well against LSU. Mississippi State was able to exploit our weak linebacker play while LSU’s linebackers are some of the best in the country. Relf also looked exhausted out there and he come up a little gimpy a couple of times. He cannot take another beating like that again on Thursday. Relf is also scared to throw it down field. LSU can load the box and easily play man with MSU’s receivers. I don’t see Relf getting much after that. Don’t forget, MSU lost two starters on the offensive line in the Auburn game. LSU is not the team you want to see after losing starters on your offensive line.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
One starter might return, the other one is questionable.
But I see your points. ….LSU is bright and shiny and MSU is already faded, dusty doily on a coffee table…..

I am not saying MSU is a bad team.

Disagree
while LSU’s linebackers are some of the best in the country
I think LBer play is generally regarded as the weakest part of the team. That may be like saying they are the dumbest kids at MIT, but I doubt these guys will make any all american lists…Baker has a legit shot at all SEC, but that’s just one dude.

LSU MSU
…..I’d definitely pick LSU to win by a significant margin. LSU was able to limit Oregon’s potent offense, and run on a pretty stout defense. One thing I did mention several times leading up to the Mississippi State game is that State is young at the ends and linebackers. Memphis gouged out some holes on the ground, and Auburn did more. The way LSU likes to pound it, I just don’t see that D holding up.
…..Meanwhile, Chris Relf didn’t hit anything downfield through the air against Auburn. Had a few opportunities, too. If he lobs hand grenades up like that against LSU’s secondary, it’s going to get ugly.
......Drowning in cool elixir.
I completely agree Acid.
You just gave more reasons why LSU will destroy Mississippi State. I despise LSU, but they’re good no matter how much I hate them. Believe me, that’s a lot.

As for lsu/msu I think the bengal tigers are going to open a can of whoop *&!. Acid’s comments are right on msu’s weakness on the outside is perfect for the ball control lsu likes to play. I also do not see msu having anywhere near the success winning the battle on the interior they had against us.

Your absolutely right that this team is special...
Call me a kool aide drinker. Call me an over the top fan. Call me a fanatic. But don’t call me leaving a game before the clock read 0.0.
LOL.
A few facts that you can’t get around:
Relf was almost like Cam Newton… except when Cam threw the ball he was accurate. Relf was hit or miss. He was primarily a running QB. That little option play that they used gashed AU for a ton of yards. Our defense really didn’t have an answer until the end of the game when it counted.
Take away that play and AU would have won by 10 points our more.
Is our defense good? Well, it depends. They haven’t been great to date. But I will say they are learning and growing. And that is saying something. It’s also building confidence.
I am amazed at our offense. People said we wouldn’t do anything without Cam. Pish posh. Sure we have. So far we have scored pretty well.
And I would also point out – after watching the Miami Dolphins do the exact on-side kick drill that we did in game one… that our special teams really are special. By the way… Miami didn’t pull it off.
For all of those that will blabber that this team is going to lose or not live up to any expectations except for a rebuilding year… you are being pretty short sighted. Don’t give away to the opposition anything… without fighting for it. And that is exactly the mentality of this team. They fight… and so far the “big cat has landed on its’ feet”.
I think some sports writers are starting to take notice.
But for those of you who are REALLY skeptical – just ponder this: this team is learning how to win. Can you imagine what will happen next season? And the season after that???
War Damn Eagle!!!!!!
