Auburn Remains in Good Hands

What do you know? The sun did rise this morning. After spending Sunday reading message boards and Facebook posts I began to wonder whether East Alabama would wake up at all today. It's amazing how fast some fans become accustomed to winning.

After 17 games and 659 days Auburn finally lost a football game. Hell, it's time to make wholesale coaching changes. We need to start with that bum, Ted Roof. What does he know about coaching defense? And what about Gus Malzahn? Is he going soft on us? I knew he should have taken that Vanderbilt job. Is it just me or does Gene Chizik seem detached from what's taking place on the field?

Those comments sound ridiculous don't they?

If you spent anytime online after Saturday's 38-24 loss to Clemson, you came across such remarks; and those were some of the milder ones. It's time for some Auburn people to face reality. This team is not winning nine games. It's not defying the odds on the way to Atlanta.

Intelligent Auburn people know it. For our less intelligent brethren, we need to do a little education. Roof is not stupid and Malzahn is still among the best offensive coordinators in the country. Nothing has changed.

Sitting in Memorial Stadium listening to the public address announcer go through Auburn's starting lineup, I marveled at how Auburn found a way to win a week earlier at home against Miss State. Quite frankly, it should never have happened.

I haven't done a thorough stat check, but this Tiger team has to be among the youngest in program history. Auburn's not playing just a bunch of young players; they are playing nearly all underclassmen. We haven't seen something like this since SMU came back from the death penalty.

I'm only half joking.

Auburn's defensive stats continue to get a lot of play in the media. By now, we know them verbatim: 117th in total defense. 107th in points allowed. Giving up an average of 534 yards per game.

While there's no sugarcoating them, it's also important to put them in context. Malzahn runs the fastest hurry-up offense in the land this side of Oregon. When your defense is inexperienced and struggling, things looks even worse.

While quite different from Auburn's system, top-ranked Oklahoma also runs a fast offense. Despite being number one in the polls, their defense ranks 44th nationally. What about Oregon? They rank 62nd nationally.

The point is that even in the best of times, Auburn's defense will never be among the nation's best with Malzahn's offense. He says as much in his book. It won't happen - ever.

With a bunch of freshmen and sophomores on the field, you see the struggle that's likely ahead for Roof and Co. We now know that Auburn had no business being among the preseason top 25. They earned that honor based on program prestige and nothing else.

This team still has a chance to be special. The Auburn offense will likely be very good by year's end. The defense will mature. Will it translate to more wins? It's hard to see that happening now, but who saw the win over Miss State coming?

This season will not end with a division or conference championship; but all is not lost. We should look forward to watching these babies grow into men each week. You can count on this team beating somebody they shouldn't by season's end.

As for those fringe Auburn fans, be sure to spell it out for them and maybe suggest they are better suited to wear crimson.

True Auburn people are different.

Well we did miss a minimum of 15 tackles.

I don't think the 'Fire Roof' talk is ridiculous one bit.

He’s been the weak link on the coaching staff from word go.

I’ve been on all the message boards and heard that it is Roof’s defense and that it is really Chizik’s defense, and all kinds of stuff. Whoever’s defense it is, they need to step back and rethink what is going on or start packing. This defense has been as soft as an over-boiled noodle since 2009. We’ve seen no improvement overall, only flashes of brilliance in a handful of 2nd halves last year. That’s it.

The sooner Auburn fans realize that the best DC we have on payroll at Auburn is Malzahn’s duties as the OC, the sooner we’ll get someone in here running the defense the way it should be in the SEC.

I understand that we are young. I’ve heard that and said it myself out loud while watching our Tigers flounder all over the field, but are we BOTTOM OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL young? Hell no. Not even close. We’ve got decent talent on this defense. There is no excuse for this defense to be the WORST in all of the land. None. It is pathetic.

I don’t care if Roof is the problem, Chizik is the problem, or whoever. No one at Auburn is “above” the defensive problems right now. Not one single person.

I agree 1000% with this. I can’t watch the talent we’ve recruited get wasted all over the defensive side of the ball. Something is wrong. I watched MSU try that dam option on LSU and they stuffed it. MSU never even tried it again. If a team can pick 2 plays and run them over and over and over for upwards of 600 yards, someone needs a new job… period. This is very frustrating and it didn’t start this year.

Question for you Jay

You say that Roof is not stupid. How do explain being gashed by the same sit down pass play time after time and corners that play off the receiver so far that a quick out gets 5+ yards every time without making a defensive alignment change. While I agree he is not stupid I do believe he is stubborn, too stubborn to realize there needs to be significant alighment and defensive philosophy changes and not after 600+ yards but during the slaughter. I don’t mean to be arguementative but we have not been a good defensive team since he got there.

I just hope they erect the Saban statue/altar/shrine before he leaves

I will take a shot at this question, if you don't mind...

First thing Ted Roof said when asked about the ugly play Saturday was this “First thing I gotta do, is look in the mirror”.
Now that tells me he is smart enough to make sure that he did all that he could, to get this team ready. Making mistakes on the same play, over and over, is from poor tackling, missed assignments, and poor communication. Any one of those will not be good, and we had a combination of them on multiple occasions against Clemson. Jay G. Tate has a couple of good insights as to what happened HERE.
The correct defense was called, just not executed to perfection. The coaches never blamed the players, ala Spurrier.
The second thing Roof said in that interview, after watching the game film is this. “Everything we did wrong, is fixable. We’ll get it fixed”.
Up until the 5:21 mark in the 2nd quarter, the defense had played lights out. Clemson had 2 three and outs, and only one scoring drive. Auburn led 21-7. Did you think we were in trouble then? Did you think that Auburn’s defense had not improved quite a bit more? I sure did. Then they started making mistakes, and the wheels came off. A young team lost it’s composure, and eventually the game. Coaching plays into it some, but I know we have a great coaching staff at Auburn. Auburn just has to mature into that good defense we would like to see.

While I agree with your assessment

That still does not explain why we line up in the same basic defense every time and play the corners off so far.

They did not run the same basic defense.....at all

Roof mixed it up quite a bit and even bltized several times…..it just didn’t work.

If you doubt that he tried some new things please explain to me when the last time you saw Craig Sanders blitz from the Mike? I’ve never seen it and it almost worked…he crushed Boyd who released just in time and the reciever made a great catch with a defender all over him. We did everything on that play that it was designed to do but Boyd still made the play….gotta tip the cap there.

Yes it would be nice to have the DB’s play up more on the receivers…but they are already making bad decisions, you don’t compound that by not giving them room to see the play develop. Closing speed is our strength there, decision making is not.

I swear, Col.

I don’t mean to end up sniping at your comments. And in truth, I want to agree with them. With that said:

Closing speed is our strength there, decision making is not.

…Except that they’re not closing well because they’re taking horrendous angles. And they’ve forgotten the fundamentals of tackling.

Given those two issues — and we can debate whether or not those are true, although I don’t think there’s much argument against them — jamming at the line to disrupt routes might not be the worst thing in the world.

Okay. I’ll sit back and take my penance — all six paragraphs of it. I’ll deserve it, not the least reason for which is that I’ve done it to others myself.

AU

From a fan standpoint, I think the problem is not one of fringe fans nearly as much as a problem of a lot of folks having drank way too much Kool-Aide throughout the spring and summer.

Between the Srs., Jrs. and off the field matters, we lost around half of what was already a team way short of the 85 limit. Of course we were/are going to struggle! I never saw more than a 7-5 or maybe 8-4 team all along and neither did most AU fans I am close to.

The only thing that has surprised me is the degree of horrendous tackling. I’m not a coach and don’t know how much of that can be fixed before USC but I’m hoping for a lot.

We’ll get better! Keep the Faith! WDE!

by auforlife on Sep 19, 2011 8:21 AM CDT reply actions

I say it is too early to know exactly what this team is capable of.

This team has a lot of talent and a lot of good coaches. I expect them to grow a lot over the season and be a much much better team by year’s end than they were on Labor Day weekend. Who is to say that great things are not still in the cards? Of all the games on the schedule, losing that one hurts the least. My expectations remain high, because I know what these coaches and players are capable of.

War Eagle.

Keep Calm and Carry On

Come on folks this is not as bad as its being made out to be. Yes the tackling is horrendous but those of you who think that is Ted Roofs fault, haven’t played much football. Tackling is fundamental and is about technique and position…..it doesn’t require much constant coaching. Its mostly about desire and discipline….are you making the necessary effort to put yourself in position to make the tackle and are you wrapping up on contact.
I won’t belabor the Roof scheme argument because if they weren’t in the right place to make the play the opposition wouldnt be getting to third down as much as they are. Our 3rd down conversion rate is horrible because we aren’t being tenacious when tackling. Whether its a personnel issue or not enough contact in practice….I can assure you that Chizik will not continue to accept the poor technique and arm tackling being demonstrated. Its one thing to be dragged by Chris Relf for four yards, its quite another to hit a Clemson receiver 5 yards short of the 1st down marker and have him run through the arm tackle for a 1st down. The guys doing that, and its most of the players right now, wont be playing much longer if they don’t improve dramatically.

We are not the worst defense in college football, if we improve the tackling we will get better in a hurry. The other problem….developing play recognition…. is where the inexperience comes in. That is only aided by devouring tape and playing full speed…its gonna be a problem for a while. Hopefully something clicks before Oct 1st.

I’m a believer that we’ll get it fixed but we need Malzahn, Trotter and Company to help out as well. We need to keep the opposition off the field…..and not gas our inexperienced and undermanned defense. Fatigue leads to poor tecnique and poor tackling.

Place, I say, place your bets! Money plays, loser stays! Everyone's a winn - well, not everyone.

FWIW, I tabulated TOP divided by # of offensive plays run for all FBS teams, and AU

ranks 30th at 23:51 seconds per play (compared to #1, UO who averages about 19 seconds per play). Among those top 30 fastest paced offenses, AU’s 117th ranked defense is only on par with Houston (102), MTSU (113), Tulsa (112), Troy (109), NIU (115) & Arizona (111).

The average defensive ranking of the top 30 fastest paced offenses is 76th, with a 25 percentile of 50th and the 75 percentile of 98th.

Translation: Even for a fast-paced offense, AU’s defense is on a whole different level of bad.

That being said, teams have bounced back from worse losses. Michigan’s App-State loss lead to a 9-4 season with a win against defending champs UF in the Cap. One Bowl, and last year VaTech lost to James Madison & went on to win their next 11 in a row! AU’s loss isn’t nearly as Pearl Harbor-esque.

Here is another point that needs to be made...

Especially with college football being more influenced by emotion, and hype. Younger players respond to this more so than more mature players.
That being said, Clemson circled this game on their calender at the end of their season last year. They wanted to be the ones to end the streak, and they played inspired football.
It’s the biggest win for the Clemson program in over 25 years. These guys weren’t even born, the last time a Clemson win meant so much.

I’m only pointing out that when the preseason polls came out, many Auburn fans were outraged at the lack of respect. I stated then (as referenced) that in MY opinion, the fact that Auburn was ranked at all was a sign of respect to Auburn. Because when you return 6 starters it’s hard to envision a top 25 season (although it could happen).

I think we’re middle of the road this year. The schedule’s been tough so far, but gets A LOT easier in the coming weeks. UGA’s not particularly good, but we’re not particualrly bad, either. We’re still probably favored in all of our remaining SEC games except for Florida and … ? Miss St. is a toss up. Okay people...

If any of you think that this coaching staff and these players, aren’t taking this personal look at these quotes…

“Nobody in that room feels good about the outcome,” Chizik said. "But the great thing I love about this team is their willingness to proceed and try to improve. I really believe that we’re going to be better.

“As I said, as bad as we played at times in the game, we still had our opportunities to come back and beat a very good football team on the road.”-Chizik

And

“The good news is it’s all fixable,” said defensive coordinator Ted Roof. “We want it fixed today. But there’s no magic dust. It’s a process.” -Roof

And

“Third down is the money down,” Bell said. “If you can’t get off the field on third down, it makes it hard to win the game…It just takes a toll on the whole defense.” – T’Sharvan Bell

The point is, everyone of these guys realize that they must get better, and fast. So, we need to quit pointing fingers right now, and wait until the end of the season to call for their heads.

If we are seeing the same problems in Game 9, the criticism will have a lot more validity.

Okay, I'll shut up. I'm not one that has to keep talkin'. Some fellas just have to keep their mouths flappin', but not me! I was brought up right, my pa used to tell me "shut up" and I'd shut up! I wouldn't say nothin'! One time, darn-near starved to death -

My one issue with the "it's all fixable" quote..

It’s not like the coaches are going to come out and say they can’t fix it. They’re CFB coaches at a big time program and they are competitive as hell. Of course they are going to say they can fix it. So take that for what it’s worth.

The problem is 3rd down defense

Auburn ranks dead last in the NCAA in 3rd down conversions on defense, allowing an eye-popping 63.64% of third down conversions. I’m not sure where to find this, but it feels to me like a lot of our third downs allowed have been longer than six yards, as well. If you can’t get off the field, the yardage racks up.

Unsurprisingly, our defense has been on the field for the most plays of any team in college football. We have been in 273 defensive plays this year, for an astounding 91 plays per game! We have got to be able to get off the field better.

It's not just the defense. AU's offense ranks 90th in third down conversions. That puts a tired

defense back on the field, and with AU’s fast-paced offense, they’re back on the field even faster than a usual 3 and out.

Last year, no surprise, AU’s offense ranked 3rd in the nation in third down conversions! That’s what Cam brought to the table.

by TexasAUtiger on Sep 19, 2011 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Too much variance

If anybody could get 5 yards per play every time on a fullback dive, they’d never run any other play. Auburn’s offense has been explosive – scoring on big plays – but it’s yards/play figures don’t show either the relatively few numbers of plays that Auburn has been able to run (owing to the defensive struggles) and the large number of negative or short-yardage plays that haven’t led to sustained drives. That current yards/play figure isn’t so much a useful figure for determining what Auburn’s average play will get next game; instead, it’s a conglomeration of the chance that Auburn will score a touchdown on the next play or settle for something that gets Auburn behind the sticks (on average).

by first and thom on Sep 19, 2011 3:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Point taken

But, considering the turnover on the offense, the fact that we still have the big play capabilities is good enough. It sucks when our offense goes three and out in thirty seconds, but it’s a necessary risk given the offensive strategy.

That's right.

There’s no doubt that Malzahn has worked his magic again.

I think offensive strategy and defensive capabilities are at loggerheads. The offense has been explosive but inconsistent in producing extended drives. That circumstance challenges an already inexperienced defense to spend a lot of time on the field, where it has been bending a lot and breaking more than folks would like.

It will be interesting to see if Gus – or Chizik? – changes the offense to account for the state of the defense.

I question some calls by Malzahn, and I question other areas as well. I will not call for heads to roll because of one loss, or 4 losses. Which I don’t believe we will see 4 losses this year. It will get better.

Thanks. I question some calls by Malzahn too.

But I have to think that there was a good reason that he kept Dyer out—or at least he reason that he felt justified about at the time. I don’t know about you, but I’m an awesomesauce Monday morning quarterback. 1st round draft pick good.

I question why the Defensive kids still have issues wrapping up-at the same time, reality tells us that no matter how great the Defensive coordinator is, underclassmen are NOT going to play like seniors after 3 live games. Sorry, it isn’t going to happen. That’s what is getting missed in this ‘discussion’, and it is, frankly, pissing me off.

Thank you for attempting to take a rational "the world is not coming to an end" position Jay.

I for one agree with the bulk of your article. More often than not I felt scheme was not the issue, it was lack of execution. The link KB posted visually supports what I saw the last 2 weeks. Col. Angus also points out what was an obvious blitz that almost worked. There were numerous other attempted blitzes’ I saw that did not work mostly because the blitzer allowed himself to be blocked.

Tackling is poor and that is the one thing that should be corrected. It is also the only issue I have with CTR. He has stated that he does coach the first guy there to make a big hit rather than wrap up. Hopefully he is re-thinking this and implementing a change in tactics.
Now everyone calm down, get behind the team and be positive.

I would like to say that criticizing the coaches...

…is not necessarily the same as whining. It could indicate a lack of knowledge of the football coaching process (to which I freely admit). But to the extent there is a connection between poor tackling and the overall running of the defense (and the defensive coaching philosophy), it is valid critiism. And I don’t consider myself engaging in whining, and I sure as HECK don’t consider myself anywhere NEAR a crimson-and-white wearer.

I have been the same the entire time...

I will never be happy being dead last with any category. I would like to see Auburn be better than dead last. By the way, our offense is pretty dang young too. They may have their problems, but without them playing so well we’re 0-3. Roof may be a great coach. You guys might be right. But, I do not accept being dead last on third downs either. Being in the 70s, I can deal with that. Okay then, let’s just keep Roof this season and see what happens.

Auburn's defense has been quite poor, but the coaches will either fix it or they won't.

There’s young talent on the DL and in the secondary. Maybe the light comes on this year; maybe it doesn’t. I expect that these players will improve, and carry Roof’s rankings up with them, even as the schedule gets tougher. If they don’t improve, or if improved execution doesn’t improve the defense, Roof can’t last forever on a 117 ranking. I won’t bet against him, but he has a tall task.

What would scare me as an Auburn fan is Gustav. Goalline stands notwithstanding, Auburn isn’t counting on its defense to win games this year. This Auburn team will go as far as his offense can carry it, and the same might be true for next year as well. There’s a lot riding on Gus staying in Auburn, and he will have suitors galore once again.

by first and thom on Sep 19, 2011 4:02 PM CDT reply actions

Here is what really bothers me:

When it is all said and done, it was good thing that Tubberville was fired. Auburn didn’t go about it the best way but it was overall a good thing. You never would have seen Auburn win the national championship under Tommy Tubberville and his Barbeque Gang. In the end, I think Auburn is much better off now without Tubberville.

The problem is that if we keep Roof now, our defense will improve next season. That’s just the problem. It will improve some and people will be screaming for us to keep him then. You see, that’s what scares me. The defense will improve, but it will not improve nearly like it could with a better defensive coordinator there. That is what bothers me the most. You see, I expect Auburn to struggle. I get it. But, I think we could have somebody so much better like Joe Whit Junior or maybe even Joe Whit Senior if he’d come back and do it again. I want one of the top defensive coordinators in the country to come to Auburn. It’s so much that I hate Roof as it is I think Auburn could get someone much better. I could give you a list of names that would take this defense beyond anything it’s been in the last three years.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

I don't know if that's entirely true.

We both like hard nose tackling. Now how we would get our kids to do that—well, it might end it slightly worse than screwed up angles and feet growing roots in the ground vs flying to the ball…..could be dicey. We could probably good cop/bad cop it okay, though as long as I get to be bad cop.

For the sake of argument, lets say that you and others calling for Roof's job are correct.

The problem I see with trying to replace him is finding some else more qualified for the job. There are not a lot quality dc’s out there to begin with, and I doubt the ones that are want to have their defenses paired with CGM’s offense. It doesn’t exaclty lend itself to great defensive statistics.

I don't know if anyone is the answer.

I just think it is too early in the season to start calling for his job. Remember how UF took a (huge) step back on defense after they won the natty in 2006? They lost all of their senior experience and had to rely on underclassmen to fill the void. Sound familiar? It worked out pretty well for them the next season but they were awful on defense in 2007.

What if it's not just youth, inexperience, and coaching?

What if our “top five” recruiting classes haven’t brought in the same talent level on D that we obviously have on O? Our RBs are first rate; OL and back-ups are doing well; I like this receiving corps. Do we see the same outstanding players on D? The DEs are small; the DTs get no penetration and get pushed around; LBs seem lost and never light anyone up; DBs can’t locate a pass in the air and never cut in front of a receiver for an INT; at least the safeties lead the team in tackles (which ain’t good).
