Football Time In Auburn!
The day has almost arrived. I hope you've taken this Friday off to get ready. It's time to load up the tents, televisions, tables and food. I hope the coolers are clean and filled with beer and ice. If you are smart, in a few hours you'll be heading to campus to mark off your spot. Our time is here. Auburn football is back. When our Tigers take the field tomorrow and for the next 12 weeks, they'll do so as the defending national champions.
It's hard to imagine things being any better for Auburn football.
Speaking of football, how do you like the picture that graces the top of this story? In my opinion, it may be the finest one to ever appear on these pages. You probably haven't noticed, but those are Cam Newton's pants he wore in the BCS Championship Game.
The website, Busted Coverage.com paid $1,525 for Newton's britches in an online auction earlier this year and decided to make the most of them. To generate some publicity, they put former Playboy playmate Jaime Edmondson in them for a photo shoot. Can you say pure genius? Click here to see the entire gallery.
I received a video yesterday of the new Auburn indoor practice facility in its full glory. A company named Advent was hired by the University to install graphics all around the facility. It looks amazing. Here's another take away: What's the deal with Jay Jacobs and the sideburns? Make it stop Jay.
Auburn University: Indoor Football Practice Facility from Advent on Vimeo.
Who says Auburn's not still ranked number one? The popular website, Deadspin.com released their top 25 yesterday and came to the conclusion that many do; you're number one until beaten. Here's what they had to say about Auburn this year...
1. Auburn
Investigation? Nobody cares. The champ is the champ till someone beats the champ. On the field. Whiners elsewhere in the S.E.C. can stop phoning in tips about Cam Newton and start investigating why their teams weren't in the Tostitos BCS National Championshp Game. (A: Because they weren't as good as Auburn.)
What they write about Alabama is even better...
20. Alabama
Did we mention that Auburn is the reigning national champion? Would ranking Alabama somewhere in the top 5 change that? It would not. Win some games, Alabama. And by "some games" we mean "every game on the schedule, plus the BCS title game." Otherwise, you're failures.
Don't forget to visit us on Saturday. Acid Reign returns for his fifth season of live blogging. It's become an Auburn institution. If you are watching on television, be sure to have your laptop in front of you. Drinking is encouraged. In fact, it's almost mandatory. Weigh in with your thoughts. Think of it as The Paul Finebaum Show for people with teeth.
Have a great Labor Day Weekend and War Eagle!

Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.
I'll take it...
…..in the spirit it was intended! I had my warm-up last night over on the SB Nation Bulldog open thread. Tried to be more of an analyst than a play-by-play guy.

In other news..
Connor Shaw has been named starter for the Gamecocks season opener.

Very interesante. Not knowing much about Shaw, I can’t help but feel that this is going to be a LONG season for ye Ole Ball Coach.

He's either going to be the second coming....
of Tyler Wilson or a bust. OBC seems more into the game this off season, still, I can’t help but think that visor will be stomped to smithereens by seasons end.

Mississippi State did not look invincible against Memphis last night. Memphis would have lost to a good high school team. They were outweighed and undersized.
Miss. St. QB Relf showed flashes of brilliance in the air followed by several bad throws. The receivers were also spotty. Running back #28 Ballard is a force to be reckoned with.
Even so, Memphis was DOA the first half but showed signs of life at the end of the second quarter. They made gains on the ground between the red zones but were often stopped in the red zone. Still, they scored two TDs.
I have faith in our coaches to deliver a superior game plan and to coach our guys to execute that plan. Mullen seemed to wander out of focus, as he has in the past, as to his planning and execution.
The MSU offense looked prett good to me...
although they did stop themselves a few times. But the MSU defense looked pretty porous and not as stout as I had thought they would be….I agree our coaching staff should trump theirs and we should win next weekend.

I have to agree Todd,
…..although the Bullies didn’t blitz much. They sat back in zone, knowing that the Memphis offense would implode before getting in scoring position. Last year, the Manny Diaz defense never met a blitz it didn’t like. This year thus far, it’s read and react. Bottom line though, the Bulldogs let the worst team in Conference USA gash ‘em for 164 yards on the ground. Memphis was having success running a two-back spread like Auburn does, and the Bulldog run fits weren’t real great.
…..Relf got off to a shaky start after the new line snapped the first ball over his head, but he settled down. He still tends to lock in on Bumphis and hold the ball too long in the pocket. I saw two or three drops, but the MSU receivers looked better. Vic Ballard was a weapon. Memphis is lucky Mullen only saw fit to hand it to Ballard 10 times. He was tough to tackle, and once he got to open field he was gone. No one could catch him.
…..The Auburn/Mississippi State game may be really high scoring, if last night’s game is any indication.

Guys...we haven't even seen AU play yet.
Let’s so this down some. I’m more inclined to make a call on next week after I actually see what Auburn has on the field. We will not know much from our week one game, but we’ll know more than we know now I hope.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

Acid, are you just bein' nice?
I thought MS’s line play was uninspiring at best, on both sides of the ball. Relf locks in on the receiver more than I do in backyard ball – not good! AND, I didn’t watch the very end (I had a long day – fell asleep!), but did the first team stay in all game for MS?
No, they were subbing a lot in the second half.
…..They did OK on the O-line. Memphis was desperately bringing the house, and that’s why the Bulldogs had a sputtery running game at times. MSU’s D-line did look shaky at times, but they were missing a suspended starting D-tackle. Even with the shaky run defense, both Memphis scores were on short fields. One after the failed fake punt, and the other after an Auburn-like muffed punt return.

Well, they certainly looked better than ours.
Here’s hoping our guys turn it up 100 notches next Saturday!
Chad Gibbs has this on his page...
Here is the link.
You will actually have to go look at it, then come back here for discussion purposes.

Might be an ugly year..
….for Cam. The Panthers’ O-line is really bad. Cam’s only hit something like 24 of 57 passes in preseason. Usually he’s running for his life after the turnstiles open.

I tried to watch the Wisconsin game last night, this is what I learned:
1. Wisconsin is BIG and nasty and HUNGRY. I am more than concerned about my ’Yotes heading there on the 24th than previously. I just want my student to come back in 1 piece (he plays on the football team).
2. Watching ESPN is painful. PAINFUL. I have been shunning it since last Spring, and found myself cringing with resentment. I know, wasted energy.
3. Dr. Lou, dUdE, you are really not funny or smart. I have no idea why ESPN feels the need to supplement your pension and social security checks. My only hope is that you don’t the soul out of Mark May-one of the few redeeming people on ESPN.
4. Jesse Palmer is still a douche.
5. I love Aubie and Charlie the Coyote, but I gotta give props to that Badger: wicked kewl mascot.
FOOTBALL IS BACK! OH I AM SO HAPPY! GO TIGERS, BEAT THE AGGIES!

That must be fun, and really scary...
…..to have a child playing college football! We certainly hope he does well. I saw some of the Badger highlights this morning. Definitely wishing we had signed their new quarterback. He looked good.
……I avoided ESPN last night, tuned to the Bulldogs on SportsSouth. That crew didn’t make too many mistakes, and wasn’t annoying. Fewer commercials, too. Wanted to watch Kentucky, but I don’t get ESPN-U. Kentucky 14-3 over Western Kentucky? Really? That’s it? Wow. ALL the Wildcat playmakers must be gone.
......Drowning in cool elixir.
It wasn't even that close.
I thought WKU would win it at the half. KYjelly looked inept, and confused. They won’t be winning the east, that’s for sure.
Come and join me at http://trackemtigers.com
Yep UK didn't put it out of reach until late the game....
if WKU had anykind of offense at all they would probably have won the game. UK SUCKS.

I think it would be scarier, if he were actually my offspring, but this is a good kid. I tend to get pretty close to the students that I mentor. He started working for me last spring, and as a undergrad, is basically running his own project. He is even making time to come in this Fall-impressive!! It’s pretty cool-we get to do science and talk about football at the same time-that’s pretty fun!!
Wish that we had the SportsSouth channel-I would have watched the MSU game instead.
