Study Says Auburn Tigers Has Largest Fan Base.
According to Nate Silver of the New York Times Auburn University has the largest fan base in college foootball. In his column, "The Geography of College Football Fans (and Realignment Chaos)" Silver states,
"Surveys find that about one-quarter of the United States population, or between 75 and 80 million people, follow college football regularly. But which teams do they align themselves with? This question is not easy to answer, but we’re going to make an effort to resolve it, and then use the results to shine a light on college football’s increasingly complicated realignment picture.
The premise of the study is this: take the 210 television media markets in the United States, figure out how many college football fans they have, and then allocate them between the 120 current Football Bowl Subdivision programs
The first part of the problem isn’t as easy as you might think, because enthusiasm for college football varies radically across different parts of the country — far more than for other sports. One way to estimate the regional variances is to look at ..."

Texas or (ND perhaps not now but for sure in the past) makes more sense to this casual observer.
Roll Tide.
I think that this was posted with the understanding that there's some seriously flawd methodology...
Rocky Top Talk’s take on it:
My comment from that:
We don’t even have the most fans in the Auburn-Opelika area, thanks to UA being the default option across the state for people who have no tie to either school.
I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about that, in terms of validity…but it sure seems like it.
It's actually a very interesting article and I didn't see the rockytoptalk response so thanks for putting that
but it’s measuring people that watched the games. Auburn went 14-0 and won the conference and the National Title in the year the study was done.
People from all over the country tune in to watch the number one team in the nation – add in the controversy and the pure entertainment factor of Cam Newton and pretty much every college football fan would tune in to watch THAT team
not saying Auburn doesn’t have a large fan base, it’s just the number 1 team in the nation is always going to get bumped numbers in television coverage
People who live in glass houses should not hang out with Charles Barkley.
I'd have to agree with this sentiment
Nobody with a brain thinks Auburn has the largest fan base year in and year out. Its a one year deal because of the championship. I’m sure we picked up a lot of casual fans who dug Cam, our style of play, all of the exciting comebacks. We had flaws but fought our way around them. Its hard NOT to like a team like that. Plus our unis are cool and good looking, that draws fans too.
Our fall from grace this year will lose a lot of band wagon fans so we’ll be back to being in the teens again I’m sure.
Place, I say, place your bets! Money plays, loser stays! Everyone's a winn - well, not everyone.
Okay, I'll shut up. I'm not one that has to keep talkin'. Some fellas just have to keep their mouths flappin', but not me! I was brought up right, my pa used to tell me "shut up" and I'd shut up! I wouldn't say nothin'! One time, darn-near starved to death -
forget bandwagon fans
if I see one more kid from the middle of Alabama rocking a Boston Red Sox hat or some jerk who suddenly became a Saints fan two years ago I’m going to puke
