Holiday Weekend Major Boon for College Football

I'm sure that most of you in addition to being college football fans are also major NFL followers. I'm bandwagon at best and I admit to more than a passing fancy to have seen the lockout continue until next year. Yes, I know--no hate mail, please, and whatever you do, don't leave this thread with almost four minutes paragraphs left on the clock. With NFL preseason contestswinding down, that left the rare weekend of having college games played ad naseum Thursday through Sunday. And if that ain't a triumphant return, I don't know what is.

With all the hype of the Chick Fil A Kickoff Game and the Cowboys Classic showcasing nationally ranked SEC teams, I'm not so sure that the two games actually leading off the season Thursday night, Wisconsin-UNLV and Miss State-Memphis, weren't the ones that didn't grab the largest audience share. Yes, they were top-20 ranked teams playing nobodies, but both put on quite the show. I tuned into the State game for some scouting for next week and they looked like a finely-oiled machine, drumming the Tigers thoroughly. State did what they could to earn points for SEC-west TV game of the week for this Saturday, but we didn't hold up our end of the bargain, hence the 11:20 AM kickoff this weekend.

And memo to Memphis: I know you play in C-USA, but if you open the season on a Thursday night with a national audience against a ranked team from the strongest conference in the nation agreeing to open on the road and you can't fill but two-thirds of your stadium, maybe it's time to focus on basketball. Either that or import other fans from the conference to give you all the asses in seats you can get. That was embarrassing.

And what about that game Friday night with Baylor and TCU? Already a BCS-buster has been busted. Thank you Bears, since Georgia didn't take care of business with the perennial other one. Do they play no defense in Texas or the Big 12 10-9? That was a pretty exciting game, I must admit. Maybe I need to take in Arena Football next?

All and all the SEC did well this weekend with their cupcakes (not you, LSU or Auburn) with only Georgia and Ole Miss losing to teams that play or played in conferences with the word west in them. Auburn's last minute miracle placed the spotlight firmly on the Dogs and Rebel-Bears--the former with a beat-down at the hands of Boise and the latter with a late 4th quarter face-plant against BYU.

And memo to Georgia: time to bury the gimmick uniforms once and for all. I know the Blackout worked for you once against Auburn, but by my reckoning, you're 1-3 in fashion statement contests and the last time I looked, this wasn't Paris or Milan. That was awful--Georgia with their futurama outfits and Boise with their throw-backs. You can't go to the future and back in time simultaneously--it could cause a college football black hole--one outside Miami, that is. Stick to the silver britches and leave the CFB haberdashery to Oregon. You see how well it works for them.

Oh, and Oregon. How close you are to disproving the whole notion of west-coast football superiority. You're the best from there of late but you're 0-2 against SEC teams your last two games, so the streak remains alive. I thought for sure you had revenge on your minds from January, but you were clobbered at the hands of another SEC defense. While I'm pretty sure you'll run through the PAC this year and still challenge for the BCS, you have to think that RB Lamichael James, the Heisman runner-up from last season, is out already this year. Forty-nine yards against Auburn in the BCS title game and fifty-four Saturday night against LSU? Those are like Emmit Smith against Auburn numbers. Meh, just as well. I think they've already crowned Andrew Luck of Stanford anyway.

Star-divide

So now to the Auburn Tigers. Okay, meaningless stat of the week: Auburn has now won it's 92nd opening game in history, which is second all-time in the conference to--wait for it--Alabama at 93. What does that mean? Probably that we schedule a lot of patsies for season openers. I think I'd be more impressed if we had a similar record in conference openers. Of course, that would probably mean that we usually open with Mississippi State.

Okay, elusive stat of the week: who was the last national champion to lose it's season opener the following year? They mentioned first Miami in 1990 during the broadcast, but it turns out it was Michigan in 1998. Notre Dame was the last champ to lose to an unranked team, lastly in 1978. Makes you wonder if they research these things beforehand just in case, or if they just have some guy in the booth on the internet?

Since it's Tuesday and we at TET have already rehashed the game backwards and forwards, here's my quick hitters about last Saturday:

  • You simply must work Phillip Lutzenkirchen into the game early and often. His leadership is desperately needed. We can't save him until the end like some sort of trump card. Auburn has forever under-utilized tight ends. I thought that would change when we starting calling Lutz a H/Slot-back. Get on it.
  • Barrett Trotter must present some threat to run the ball or the opposing defense will key on our backs every time. The guy can be elusive. Let him take off a few times, unless the coaches think he's too fragile. If that's the case, put Mosely in. Look, we know he can't run like Cam, but 5-8 times a game would open things up considerably. Maybe Malzahn is waiting for State to show that card?
  • Speaking of Trotter, his rating Saturday was impressive. Yes, there were some under and over throws, but overall I was impressed with his accuracy and resolve to hang in there at the end. What he had to tell his teammates in the locker room Saturday afternoon will probably have a greater effect on this team than anything the coaches may have said.
  • Travante Stallworth, you have arrived. You looked like John Stallworth out there. Way to step up. Glad to see that a big time receiver is no longer in doubt between you, Emory Blake, and Travon Reed.
  • Tre Mason: the best is yet to come. Haven't seen an Auburn Tiger come out of the starting blocks like that in his inaugural effort in a long time.

Everybody have a great week and we'll talk again by Saturday. War Eagle!

Jawja's unis were hideous...

I don’t think they were anywhere near as bad as some of the ones Maryland showed off earlier last month, hideous none the less.

Good post.

Your right on about getting Trotter to scramble and involve Lutz more. But how you gonna improve the defensive side?
Also this team needs two things: 1) Experience 2) Maturity. The maturity comes from the experience. I just hope that the Tigers can pull out a few early games (ie. Sat.) on their way to gaining the experience.

GEORGIA!

I’ve been holding my tongue, because I have been so angry. They looked so cocky, from the players to the coaches to those rednecks in the stands. What do they have to show for it? Some ridiculous prom dresses that they will never wear again (hopefully). I knew that they would miff this game, but I thought it would be close. If that’s not taps for Richt playing in the background, well it should be. I am sick of them being an embarrassment for the SEC. Pull it together, Dawgs! Clean up your House!!

92nd Opener Wins- Correction

In 2005, we lost to Ga. Tech in the season opener. I painfully remember this and hate to have to bring up this correction.

Duh...

Thanks for clarifying that! I thought I was reading that wrong!

I agree with you on Lutz. Auburn has been ingnoring the TE position for at least 25 years. You are right on with Trotter. That being said, he was one of the highs of the weekend. If he can keep the same level of composure in the coming weeks, we may have a shot to cover up our defensive weeknesses with more points. And remember one other stat that was overlooked – no turnovers. I thought for sure Georgia won the award for worst uniforms of the weekend. Then I saw Maryland last night. May be the worst uniforms ever.

I know I'm in the minority on this...

But Georgia’s unis didn’t look so bad in-game (though I still hate the monochromatic scheme), and I wound up liking the helmets.

And uh….I kinda’ thought that Maryland’s were neat. In my defense, I’ll claim that I was conditioned by seeing the godawful red and yellow getups for their fashion “show” and the Flinstones-inspired helmet that they wore in warm-ups.

Failing that, I’ll claim that the sharp contrast (yellow on black, red on white) caught my eye, much the way that shiny objects draw birds to them.

Thanks

for putting an avatar pic up, AU Tiger, but could you not have chosen a former president of LSU? Maybe you could use Harry Philpott or James E. Martin for a more Auburn feel? :-)

True...I hadn't considered the LSU connection....

…but that’s hardly the most enduring part of his legacy.

by AU Tiger on Sep 6, 2011 11:03 AM CDT reply actions

Your right because, William Tecumseh Sherman's -

most enduring legacy was cruelty and brutality against civilians in the South. From arresting cotton mill workers and displacing them to the north to leading 100,000 men as they cut a path of destruction across Georgia, leaving destroyed crops, dead animals, and burned out farms and towns.

He has a legacy and it is that he was and still is the most hated and despised man in the history of Georgia.

I'm sorry that that is what you take away from it.

He was a brilliant tactician and leader that served the country during one of its darkest times.

I’m loathe to discuss religion or politics, and beside that, I believe that bringing up the topic is generally frowned upon; so I’ll leave it at that.

A few things I noticed...

I agree that Oregon tends to blow marquee games out of conference, but that’s ANY conference, not just the SEC. Boise beat them in back to back years 3 and 2 years ago, then tOSU beat them in the Rose Bowl the same year, then Auburn, now LSU (all of those teams ranked). However, granted the SEC now enjoys a 2-0 winning streak over the Ducks, they came into the BCSCG with a win over Tennessee. Yes Tennessee sucks I know. Tenn lacked and still lacks depth, which is how Oregon eventually beat them. Oregon can rely on playing lack of big speed depth in the Pac-10,12,16 or whatever, but that’s it.

So I just rewatched the game and slow mo'd alot

Things are bad, but I think we can battle thru these issues. For starters was the # of plays we ran. 54 plays which is well below the malzahnian goal of 85ish ppg. About a third less plays than desired and we still scored 42 points! To open the game trotter was 5 for 5 and only had 6 incompletes on the day. The incompletes weren’t horrible passes either for the most part. Maybe 2 of 6 were, but the others were near misses. The running game was largely ineffective early on because there were extra defenders in the box and people were missing blocks BAD. Both linemen and receivers. Pretty much ALL of them at some point or another. Dyer compounded this problem by pressing in the 2nd and 3rd because he was frustrated. He would run past the blockers rather than allowing them time to set guys up. He was getting 5-10 yd gains, but could’ve had more had he not been pressing to show some production. The problem with the D seemed to me to be more about alignment and scheme rather than effort. The 7 or more yard cushion the DBs were giving was scheme. Only having 2 defenders on the side for a bubble screen when we need a hat on a hat was scheme. That got fixed in the second half. The other problem I saw was lack of aggression. These D-linemen were used to being the biggest baddest kid on the field in HS and could just hold there ground and the play be successful. Holding your ground doesn’t work on the college level. You must DRIVE your man. This applies on both sides of the ball and I think coaches will bring that to the players attention and challenge them to respond. Same applies for receivers. I really missed kodi burns as I watched Q Carr and T Reed whiff on blocks (almost like they were scared of contact whiffing). I have faith the coaches and players get this addressed and respond well next week. Just like last year, we didn’t know what we had until the 5th game of the year. Same will apply this year. War Eagle!

Only having 2 defenders on the side for a bubble screen when we need a hat on a hat was "alignment"....

it’s the MLB’s job to call the coverage if it’s not picked up by the responsible man prior to the snap and there was more than one instance that the coverage was blown from alignment. A couple of times a man in motion switched sides of the field to load that side with recievers and there was zero adjustment by the defense…..and it wouldn’t have mattered how far off the db’s played because 2 db’s can’t cover 3 recievers……Hopefully Holland will be able to recognize the change in coverages better against MSU and Eltoro being back will also make a big difference.

I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.

Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.

Agreed

Eltoro could make a difference.

Good read WEA.

by PineMtTiger on Sep 6, 2011 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions

It is the MLB...

But they showed a complete ineptitude time and time again to stop anything. Thus, you adapt your scheme and mix it up at least a little bit. The Tampa 2 is a great defense when you’ve got the personnel to run it correctly. I want to stay in it as the main base just maybe some 4-2-5 and Nickel every once in a while to mix things up some. Our weakest positions are linebacker and defensive tackle. Both of which, are mighty important in the Tampa or Cover 2 for that matter.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

by Sparkey on Sep 6, 2011 8:49 PM CDT up reply actions

Sparkey I understand your frustration....

really I do, but watching the players still shuffling the line as the ball was snapped doesn’t tell me it was scheme it tells me it was youth and inexperience….and perhaps you could tell me how you expect to stop the run with a nickel package against MSU….do you expect T Bell to plug the gap on the run? The Tampa 2 mostly relates to pass coverage….against the run it is pretty much just a standard 4 3 defense……I fail to see how an extra DB is going to help stop the run especially the inside running game (MSU has a powerful running game between the tackles). Now if you said go to a typical 4 3 defense without the Tampa 2 (where the MLB drops into pass coverage in center field) and the MLB stayed within 5 yards or so of the LOS that might make sense….but addin a nickel back on the field to stop the run? Let’s see what happen’s this weekend…..getting Eltoro back may make a big difference and Holland getting the butterflies out might make the rest of the D better as well. With all that said I expect Roof and Chizik to dumb down the D a little for this weekend…..I expect a shootout.

I don't troll so I reserve the right to berate trolls as I see fit.

Just so you know I won't forget.....LSU Jonno predicted we would finish 5th in the west in '11.

Enjoyed the read WEA.

I hope Auburn never sells out to the fashion statement of uniforms.

Also I agree on Stallworth being the man this year. I’m glad he has another chance to show what he can do.
