Tigers Rumble Past the Cavaliers!

War Eagle, everybody, and Happy New Year! It's time now for the Acid Reign report on Auburn's highest scoring bowl victory in history. Auburn defeated the Virginia Cavaliers 43-24 on New Year's Eve in the Georgia Dome, and won their 8th game of the season. The 43 points were the most ever put up by an Auburn team in a bowl game, eclipsing the old mark of 38 points in the 2010 Outback Bowl.

The story of this game was the play of backup quarterback Barrett Trotter. The junior from Birmingham was benched at halftime of the Florida game, and it was widely assumed that he'd be done with football after this season. Early in the game, starting quarterback Clint Moseley limped to the bench, and was on crutches the rest of the game with an ankle injury. Trotter entered the game, hit 4 of his first 6 passes, and Auburn erased a 14-7 deficit and took a lead it would never relinquish. For the game, Trotter was 11 of 18 passing with a touchdown, and no turnovers. Trotter faced pressure, but escaped time and time again, to finish with 32 rushing yards, and he was not sacked on the evening.

Departing Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzhan wanted to leave with a bang, and the team did score 43 points, thanks to the heroics of Trotter and speedy offensive MVP Onterio McCalebb. Still, it would be wrong to say that Auburn's offensive woes this season are fixed. There were times that Virginia absolutely collapsed the offensive line. Defenses know that Auburn's only option down the field is Emory Blake, Lutzenkirchen gets the short crosses and wheel routes, and McCalebb and Bray get the screens. Little effort has to be made to cover Quindarius Carr or Travante Stallworth, because Auburn won't throw there. Auburn used quarterback Khiel Frazier like an option fullback. I suppose the Cavaliers don't see much Wildcat offense in the ACC, because they never attacked it on defense. SEC defenses roll a safety down in the middle, and cowboy-blitz a corner to take away the speed sweep. Thankfully for Auburn, the Cavs had difficulty recognizing that package.

Auburn special teams had a great game. Auburn basically tallied 4 touchdowns, a safety, and a field goal off special teams play. The Tigers took advantage of spotty protection, and blocked two of three Virginia punts. One set up the first touchdown, and the second was a safety. After the safety, a 62 yard free kick return by Quan Bray set up a field goal. The Tigers scored another touchdown after a successful onside kick and recovery by Cody Parkey. Finally, Auburn special teams gunner Chris Davis stopped a fake field goal, and Auburn drove for another score off of that. Parkey had a busy night, hitting two long field goals, and adding 4 more touchbacks on kickoffs. Steven Clark only punted 3 times, but all of them were rain-makers allowing no return, and he averaged 49 yards per punt.

Virginia came into the game with a rep for protecting the quarterback, and Auburn only managed one Gabe Wright sack on the night. Still, the Auburn line stood up to the test of handling a strong veteran line, and forced Virginia to go to the air more than they wanted. While the Cavaliers did rush for 123 yards, it wasn't enough consistent offense to keep pace with Auburn's big plays. The Tiger secondary had their hands full with Cavalier receiver Kris Burd. Even when doubled, Burd managed to secure the ball in traffic repeatedly. Virginia hit pass after pass, and diced the Tiger zone defense for 312 passing yards. However, Auburn tackled pretty well after the catch, and the longest play of the day was only 29 yards. This forced Virginia to work the ball down the field, and often the Tigers could get the stop due to turnovers, or errant throws.

Unit Grades, after the jump!

Star-divide

Defensive Line: C-. There are not a whole lot of stats in this game for the D-line. Corey Lemonier led the way with 3 tackles, Gabe Wright had a 4th quarter sack, and Kenneth Carter swatted a pass down. The defensive line only contributed 7 total tackles in the game. What was important is that for the most part, they held their ground, filled gaps, and kept big linemen from getting out and blocking on Auburn's back seven. Even though he didn't post a single stat, Auburn's Nosa Eguae had to be double-team blocked for the Cavs to have any success running wide.

Linebackers: C+. This crew had a pretty decent day limiting the Cav running game, but they still aren't too great in coverage. Virginia completed a lot of balls in that 5-10 yard range, and the only thing that stopped them was balls hitting the ground, or Auburn's tacklers in the secondary. Jake Holland got a late interception, but the big hit that caused the deflection was by corner Chris Davis. This is an area of great concern going forward, with Eltoro Freeman graduating.

Secondary: B-. Auburn had difficulty making plays on the ball in the air, but they hung with receivers and made tackles. Neiko Thorpe and Chris Davis (along with linebacker Darren Bates) led the team with 8 tackles each. Corner Jonathan Mincy added 6, and Demetruce McNeil had 4 stops. Jermaine Whitehead, Ryan Smith, and Robenson Therezie all came off the bench and contributed 2 tackles each. I counted a letter grade off for Virginia's first TD, a post pattern that got behind both safeties. That can't happen down the middle! Other than that play, Auburn's secondary guys did a great job of coming up and forcing Virginia to make play after play to get the ball down the field.

Punting: A. I suppose I have to count off a bit for one touchback on three punts, but the amazing thing is that Steven Clark only had 3 total in 13 games! Clark hit some towering howitzer shots in this game, for a gaudy 49 yard average, and had one downed inside the 20. Virginia was not able to field any of those punts.

Punt Returns: A-. Virginia only had one successful punt, and Quan Bray made a one-handed snag of the dangerously bouncing ball at the Auburn 7 yard line. He probably should have let that one hop out of the end zone. The major factor in this grade was the Tigers blocking two punts. Auburn realized that Virginia's mission on the line was to release and get down the field quickly, and Auburn rushed more guys than the back 3 protection guys could handle. Kudos to Garrett Harper and Angelo Blackson for making the plays on the ball.

Kick Returns: B+. There were three of these, and the big one was Quan Bray's 62 yard jaunt after the Virginia free kick. That return was a great individual effort. Blocking wasn't great on any of the three returns, and Bray was held to just 12 yards on his other effort. Onterio McCalebb had one return for 18 yards. You'd like to see your return man get at least 20 yards.

Place-kicking: A. Cody Parkey continues to be a weapon, drilling a pair of long field goals and adding 4 more touchbacks to his resume. For the season, Parkey tallied 38 touchbacks, an unheard of number since the kickoff spot was moved back to the 30 yard line. Parkey also looked like a pretty good soccer player on the onside kick, perfectly dribbling the ball 11 yards. Points off on the 44 yard missed field goal. Auburn gave up 3 kick returns averaging 24 yards each, but I think the angle of Parkey's kicks determines a lot of that. Last season, Byrum and Parkey were getting the ball higher, but not as deep. These touchbacks require more of a line drive shot. I think that's the main reason Auburn's kick returns against average went from 19.7 in 2010, to 22.1 this season.

Offensive Line: C+. At first, this looked like another F in the making, but the Tiger interior bowed up, and Auburn started breaking off big plays. I think protections were communicated better than they have been all year. I hated to see A.J. Greene go down late. He's battled through a lot of pain and adversity to start the past few years, and my hat's off to him. I took a few points off on a false start by Chad Slade, but more serious is a season-long problem of letting fast rush ends get around the corner. Only some very shifty maneuvering by the Auburn quarterbacks prevented a sack-fest in this one.

Running Backs: B+. Every time this game was mentioned by the talking heads at ESPN, the opinion was that Auburn had no way to replace Michael Dyer's production. Onterio McCalebb and Tre Mason combined for 19 carries, 173 yards, 2 scores on the ground, and 2 receptions for 53 yards and another score. That's a pretty good day! Phillip Lutzenkirchen was his usual consistent self on lead blocks. Points off on a couple of dropped passes by Lutz, although both would have been difficult grabs. Also counted off on a holding penalty called on Onterio McCalebb.

Receivers: B. I counted off a bit on dropped balls by Emory Blake and Brandon Fulse (on the goal line). Blocking was good at times, and sometimes not. We're going to miss Jay Wisner out there burying defensive backs next season. He made a couple of those tunnel screens to Blake go. Quan Bray made a nice run on a reverse, and continues to be the go-to guy for quick screens.

Quarterback: A. The game turned in by Barrett Trotter and Khiel Frazier was the best since Cam Newton left. There were no quarterback turnovers, and this position generated 267 total yards and 3 touchdowns. Trotter had at least 4 balls dropped, and still managed to hit 11 of 18. More importantly, he avoided taking big hits, or making bad throws. These two guys managed an offense that cranked out 454 yards on a good defense with no turnovers. Bravo!

I salute this Auburn team for delivering one of the more entertaining Tiger bowl games in quite some time. The 43-24 margin is the largest bowl victory since Auburn lost seven fumbles in the Gator Bowl, and still managed to beat Texas 27-3 way back in 1974. Usually Auburn bowls are nailbiters, or letdowns. We haven't seen Auburn really in total control of a bowl game late since the Hall of Fame win over Ohio State in 1990. Sure made for a fun New Year's Eve!

This game also shined light on our prospects for next season. I wondered if our lines were going to have the ability to bang with better SEC-level squads. With a bit of rest, these young men did exactly that. Can't wait to see what they look like by fall camp! McCalebb and Mason are deadly weapons, and I'll really enjoy seeing what they do going forward. I think we've got a loaded, talented secondary returning. I'd love to see coach Chizik get a Bill-Oliver-type guru who's known for confusing quarterbacks.

I think the biggest question of the off-season is who the next offensive coordinator will be, and what sort of philosophy is implemented there. After this bowl performance, we may well have a 4 quarterback race next spring. Most folks figured Barrett Trotter would be gone, but I think he might stick around and see what's cooking next season. Trotter proved to us and more importantly himself that he can make big-league college football plays. He needed respectable protection to do it, and didn't get that for most of his tenure last fall.

War Eagle, folks! It's great to ring out the year with another win. Gene Chizik has a 30-10 record as Auburn's head coach. Looking back through Auburn's history, no head coach has had as good a winning percentage, since D. M. Balliet and G. H. Harvey went undefeated in 1892 and 1893. No Auburn coach that's been around for 3 seasons or more has a 75 percent winning percentage. We're in uncharted territory, winning national championships and getting big-time exposure. It's a great time to be an Auburn Tiger!

War Eagle all....

Great write up as usual Acid. I hated not being able to stay on line throughout the game with you all last night but I had Internet issues.

Regardless of what the talking heads say or the haters think I believe we are in good hands going forward. The team played with great energy last night. When our young unsized linemen get another off season of Yox we will no longer be blown off the ball.

As for coaching I believe CGC did a good job with what we had this season, including the disappointing blowout losses to our rivals this season. More importantly I believe the players really respond to him.

Please...

don’t mention Yox like that. I completely disagree.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

Congrats guys !

You made Virginia look like an A.C.C. Team for damned sure. Mcalebb is so friggen fast !
Apparently Barrett Trotters key to superpower is his pornstache.

I mean no disrespect when I say that Auburn still looked shaky at times against a good A.C.C. team but lets not lie and say they are better than they really were ( cavaliers) they are a mediocre team at best. I think its great that a mediocre Auburn team can destroy a mediocre virginia team. Just goes to show that a mediocre S.E.C. team is still head and shoulders above any other teams.

RTR and once again – Congrats on the win
and already looking forward to next season !

Auburn team that is also not meant as a slam. just an observation of delivery versus what my expectations are for you all. This year was not what I expect of a team in Aub

No offense taken.

….I had plenty of warts to point out in that post, too. Football’s always about building and improving. Looked like some had taken place since the UGA and Bama beatdowns.

Lots of things to feel good about in this game..

And yet, there is room for enormous amounts of improvement.
Barrett Trotter, and Davis Hooper playing in the game was really a lift emotionally for the team. Acid covered Trotter, but to see Hooper in the game, after having to go through surgery this fall, was truly remarkable, and uplifting.
The defense needs a ton of work, but the fact that tackles were being made, and for the most part, the game was kept in front of the safeties, it was an improvement. There is a long long way to go in that area, but I’ll take seeing some improvement in a three week period, over not seeing any.
This game just whets my appetite for next season, now the long wait until spring ball.

Our guys needed this win!

And they came together and played hard for it. There were some plays on offense that just made my jaw drop with their fantasticness. To see Barrett Trotter play the way he did made my New Year’s. It did. It will be interesting to see if he sticks around.

I also felt that the D played with some intensity that was largely absent this season. I didn’t like stuffing the Cavs into 3rd and long situations and still allowing the 1st down. I can’t complain too much about the red zone D though (first Cav score withstanding).

And so the Coordinator watch begins……

I think Trotter's struggles in the middle part of the season had a lot more to do Blake being out than anything Trotter was or wasn't doing.

It’s clear Auburn doesn’t have a second WR capable of beating his man consistently like Blake. When he’s healthy the offense hums, when he’s not it stalls.

Hopefully, Trotter will stick around because Auburn should be able to compete with him running the offense next year.

Alabama fans, ask yourself this question: Is this who you want representing your University and your fanbase?

that blocked punt in the endzone

that led to the safety was a thing of beauty. Great job by our defense to keep them pinned far enough back for that play to be possible.

When they put Trotter in, I was thinking, come on, this is not going to go well. But he proved me wrong. Great scrambling jobs by him. Although I’d say he would have been sacked for sure without that hold that got called. Nothing he could do about that one and he played extremely well.

Best of luck to Malzahn. When his stuff was working, I never had more fun watching Auburn on offense. Unfortunately, whatever it was worked less this year. I don’t know if the better teams figured it out or what.

by mgizmo2005 on Jan 1, 2012 9:19 PM CST reply actions

I was there.... and I stand amazed!!!!

Yeah, Gus Malzahn’s last game. yawn

But that isn’t what I think is important:

1) Barrett Trotter – simply amazing. I saw him during the warm ups… I was having a jack and coke and noting who was playing. The next thing I know… the game is started and Mosely is throwing and missing everything. I go to the bar to refresh my jack and coke and the guy behind me in the box says… “Mosely is in the locker room…. hurt ankle”.

Wow. Obviously Mosely wasn’t on at all. I think his ankle was an injury that lasted from the regular season. Trotter comes on the field… and AU starts moving the ball. It’s that simple. He is a leader. If you got to see the him scramble in the backfield and make a first down in the 4th QTR… you would understand. Trotter had his game of the season in the bowl game. Congratulations to him!

I too was one of the ones calling for a change. But the truth be told… the change needed to be done with the coordinator. QB was fine. Mosely is still a stud in my book for coming into the season at the LSU game and take the beating he did. Unfortunately AU got a bad rap because of it.

2) Special teams: Can I get an amen on an onside kick? Lord help me, I about fell over the box wall when we did the kick… I am screaming “war eagle hey”… and damn if they kick an onside kick. At first I thought the liquour was screwing with me… but we got it and flipped the game. We also blocked a punt… caused a safety…. and damn near flipped UVA’s shorts when we faked the onside again… I couldn’t help but laugh my ass off!

3) Onterio McCalleb. WOW. WOW. The dude ended up as offensive MVP. His runs were awesome. And I don’t think I was alone thinking with out Dyer we would suck an egg on the field. I had no idea we would do as well in running as we did.

4) #2’s succeess was largely attributed to our offensive line. Way to go guys. Make shift or not… you played lights out.

5) Emory Blake was ON LIKE DONKEY KONG!!! He only had a drop or two.

6) And what about our defense??? Say what you want about the total yardage… but the fact that our defense got better was obvious to just about everyone in the stadium. I was impressed. The first TD of virginia happened in the second possession… and at that time I wasn’t sold. But it was after the 2nd QTR and Virginia’s second TD… that is when someone flipped a switch in our defense.

All in all… I had a blast. What A game!!!

I am ready to see who we got for coordinators. Like Pat Dye says…. coordinators don’t make the team. My only caveat to that statement is that they do a hell of a lot to help shore up the bottom line. Both in recruiting and getting your kids ready to play.

True enough AU didn’t give up at all. They showed their resilience from start to finish. I was proud of our orange and blue warriors. Chizik demonstrated to me that he still has it together to get things done. HIs staff was clicking on all cylinders.

Just close the deal coach. Just close the deal. Hire quality!!!!

A note in passing to our Virginia opponent: a very organized and active fan base. That can get a bit annoying. But AU was able to handle it with class. I was very proud of my University and of our fans.

War Damn Eagle!!!!!

Defense improved....

And so did most of the team. Like I said earlier this year they are so young and when they had a little time off to process what they had done and learn from it they would start to come around and they did. I can hardly wait to see how much they improve in the Spring and Summer, watch out Clemson here we come. I took a peek at our depth chart on autigers.com and was flabbergasted at just how young we really are, So and Rfr and fresh, g2 and three deep. With the experience and hard work during the off season the sky is the limit! Can hardly wait to see who coordinators are going to be. What a great game for Trotter! After going to game last night I studied the film of the game this evening, did you see how fast Trot ran down the field blocking on one of those long runs, he was really getting it LOL. What a way to go out if he chooses to but I hope he gets peace about what he wants to do, it’s hard to put down those pads knowing you will never do it again. He has potential with a better grown up line, and they did a good job moving pocket for him last night. Heck it took Cambell 3 years and 3 games before he got it and really shinned. Happy New Year and War Eagle to the Auburn family, how many days to Spring practice?………

now that's what we call "Auburn Tiger ball"

i’m not satisfied with yielding 24 points, but i really really enjoyed the defense gettin’ all rowdy … where was that emotion all year?

Chizik's book...

I don’t know if you have read CGC’s book but it is very insightful in how he approaches everything. He’s a man of real character and depth. His coaching flows from that – not some process. I have no doubt we’re in great hands under his leadership. He’s not held hostage by public opinion and therefore won’t make shallow decisions. We have some great years ahead! WDE and happy new year!

My Season Take

It was a great game to watch. Our special teams really propelled us to the win. Great game for Trotter!

As someone mentioned above, I think the coaches really made a bad decision with Trotter and Mosley (of course we are not privvy to practice and meetings) by just knowing the game situations and watching the performance. When Blake went out, that left very little for a QB to work with in the passing game. This was proved by all three QBs. The O-Line was terrible but at least Trotter looked “comfortable” with the pressure and moving to avoid it and delivering a decent catch opportunity or throwing it away. Mosley never looked comfortable and made horrendous throws. Even with no pressure he doesn’t look comfortable. SEC defenses are not going to ever get any easier to play against. We need someone with a sense of calm and leadership. That is Trotter. Fraizer….. In meetings and practices, he obviously is not showing progress and the ability to run the passing side of the offense. He can’t take over unless he does. He doesn’t even show the ability to read the option on offense. Its either a called handoff or he always pulls it out and runs. He is not running an OPTION. It scares me that he won’t pick these things up.

Both lines need to get bigger and stronger. They were completely outmatched in the SEC. The D-Line looked so small and weak against Bama. Hopefully it will be just a case of them being young and an offseason of workouts will help fix that. I just am not sure of that either.

Tackling….. who teaches the defense to tackle? Our inability to hit someone and take them down has killed this team for the past five years. Last year we just had such an awesome O to overcome these things. We make some big first hits and then they BOUNCE off and gain considerable more yardage the majority of the time.

Lets hope we get some good coordinators and get some good recruits to come in. We have such a young team but we need to continue to get better and have people that can step in who have already been strengthened and are ready instead of learning so much on the job.

I read something in the paper and I guess its true. Auburn had 28 players play in the bowl game who had NEVER played in a bowl game before. That just goes to show you how young we were because we had a lot of sophmores who did play last year. Lets hope that gets them excited and ready to get bigger, faster and stronger!

In fairness to Moseley..

….Trotter had an ugly pick six against Mississippi State, too. And here’s a secret: lots of option quarterbacks don’t really run the option. Play’s called in the huddle, and what you are running are fakes. I first figured this out watching guys like Richard Todd and Pat Washington.

Don't look now folks but the SEC is kicking butt right now.

Fla and Sakerlina are both comfortably ahead and playing well.

Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?

This is why...

….I’ll never run a successful Acid Reign betting adviser business! I figured UGA was the best bet today, but that one is headed to overtime. Good game, too. Had no clue about UF, but Brantley was solid in his last game. USC really surprised me. Made some dumb mistakes in the first half, but they got stronger as the game went on. That hail mary to Jeffery I suppose was kharmic payback for giving one up in the SEC title game last year!
