The Real Malzhan Story

I have a source that reported through a friend of Malzhan's that midway through the season Chizik went to Gus and told him to "tone down the offense we are who we are" which was obvious as the day is long after the Clemson game where we started out on fire. This information also was apparent last night as GUS had full play calling ability. My belief is this is ONE of the reasons Gus left. At any rate I felt like I should share with Y'all. I know this is coming from a source and we never know if it is 100% accurate, however this is a from an individual who has allot of credibility.

I think there was a lot at play here...

First and foremost… his stock was dwindling. Depreciation was huge after the NC game and first game of the season against UTAH STATE. It continued to degrade as the season progressed.

I also think that his wife cost him a lot of credibility whether it was earned or not. You don’t open your mouth against what your husband does to earn a living. She had several statements that made we wince and I think I have pretty much seen it all in that regard. Boards can be a very non-sympathetic group – they really do care what is said.

If the depreciation was the kindling… the actions of his wife was the match….

Then add to the pile that there was not a lot of jobs out there that he wanted. And the ones he did… I think money situation was the ultimate issue. I think he wanted what they offered at Vandy… and when he didn’t get it… he panicked.

Add to that… the glamor story that Chizik and he are best of buddies….

I no longer care about Gus Malzahn’s departure. He can’t leave fast enough. I want to know about the “new” guy…. anyway.

Enough of the "Gus Worship"

Yes we won last night, but nothing changed from the weeks preceding last night to make me think that “Gus just got to do it his way again”. What happened is the moribund Clint Moseley got hurt and Barret Trotter came out and didn’t play like an escapee from a mental ward.
We are a mediocre team that played another mediocre team that made a ton of mistakes in the kicking game that gave us momentum to burn and a belief that we could win….that’s it. Yes Gus dialed up some nice plays. The Statue of Liberty…the pass from to Blake after the onside recovery…. But be honest with yourself….that offense last night wouldn’t have beaten anyone of consequence, and certainly not a top level SEC defense.

If Gus had stayed we would still have the same issues, we have forgotten about for one day. We don’t have an established playmaker at QB, he’ll we don’t have a QB at all in my opinion….we don’t have receiving threat outside of Emory Blake….our line still can’t get you 3 yards on third and short….and if Dyer isn’t on the team next year, we don’t have anyone to run the ball 25 times a game. We have a ton of weapons on this team that Gus was never able to incorporate into the offense, either because he couldn’t coach them up to do the job (receivers), couldn’t get them to play tough(the line, Onterrio) or they were just head cases (the QB’s). Regardless of where you fall on the issue with Gus, you have to admit he failed to make the offense productive with the majority of the difference makers on the team. Whether Chizik asked him to “tone it down” or not is irrelevant, pace was not an issue. ….getting a first down was. We RARELY put together a meaningful drive after the Clemson game, where pace would have been a factor….we simply did not have the QB play to sustain drives the second half of the season. That Gus was unable to get performance from Trotter/Moseley/Frazier was why the offense failed, not because Chizik wanted to slow things down. What will fix our offense is getting guys to open holes in the line, getting a QB that can go through his progressions without panicking, and getting some WRs to step up and become reliable. That will fix any offense you want to run.

A little harsh...

….but pretty much true, Col. If there was really a bunch of control-freak issues behind the scenes, I don’t think Gus would have stayed for the bowl game. With what we were producing offensively, there was really no choice but to slow it down.

……Virginia was the first team I’ve seen in a while that was confused by the offense. Particularly, they’d not pick up on Frazier being in, and McCalebb motioning in back from the wing. Proper defensive response to that is to bring the house. UVA really didn’t.

Not trying to be harsh, but it is what it is

It was a nice win for us but I can see that game going very badly for us if Moseley doesn’t get hurt. The players really seemed to respond to Frazier and Trotter. They looked positively comatose with Moseley. Maybe I’m projecting but I’ve been trying to support Moseley because he has the height and the arm to do the job but he just doesn’t inspire confidence in the team, that much is clear.

I really hate that we didn’t get to see Frazier run the offense and see what he could do. Right now I think we are worse off than last year in terms of knowing who the QB is going to be, since we don’t know if Trotter is coming back and Frazier doesn’t appear capable of assuming the mantle. The good news is that everybody gets a clean slate when the new OC is brought in. The guy who runs the new system best is going to get the nod.

if Dyer doesn't return

Corey Grant will shine! Everything i’ve heard about him has been good

Well thats good to hear

I hope he can run between the tackles, thats what we are missing.
Mason looks very capable but I’m afraid he won’t be able to handle the workload like Dyer can.

If said tackles can block against upper tier defenses...

else it might resemble Dyer in the Wildcat…one yard and a cloud of dust.

And still you guys refuse to meet the truth...

I said this a long long time ago. Phillip Marshall has also been saying it since Clemson. I’ve said this over and over again-Do you think that was the same offense that put up over 40 points on Mississippi State? Go ahead and bury your heads in the sand folks, but the truth is there. I can’t see how you don’t see it. I just don’t understand it. Unless you’re blind and downright dumb or just being too freaking stubborn, there was a different offense that started playing in the second half of Clemson.

Look, I’m not even saying that I disagree necessarily with Chizik’s decision. I’m just saying that it’s there. I don’t need information from a source to know it happened. All I have to do is look at football and study to know the immediate shift in philosophy.

Guys, don’t you think that both Chizik and Gus can have class? Damn, Colonel you especially just WILL NOT give any credit to Coach Malzahn and it down right makes me want to puke brother. The man is a good coach get over it. Chizik is also a good coach. Gene’s overall responsibility is to the program. Gus is supposed to work towards maximum offensive production. This season, the team just did not have the depth to run his offense properly and Gus’s main weakness was that he could not adapt. No, Gus is not good at adapting. But, his schemes when left alone are as good as anybody in the country.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

I'll give Malzahn credit for beating mediocre teams....thats it.

I’ve said it before many times but I guess it bears repeating. Malzahn has a HISTORY of not beating top ranked opponents. 2006 was his best year when he beat Alabama (22), Auburn (3) and Tennessee (17), losing to LSU and Florida - that was with Felix Jones and Darren McFadden. 2007 No wins against ranked teams. 2008- A bowl victory against Ball St. 2009- #24 Ole Miss and remember that trainwreck against Kentucky?? 2011- #9 USC — and the offense DID NOT win that game.

The difference in his history and last year? Cam Newton. Think to yourself how may times did Cam keep drives alive by converting third downs by bowling over a LB or safety to get the necessary yardage. THAT WAS THE KEY TO OUR SEASON!! Without Cam we would have lost several games.
Malzahn is a VERY GOOD coordinator and he will do great at Arky State. But we need somebody that can adapt to the defense they are playing and not be lost if he can’t run “his system”.
If you are happy with 8-4 and losing to Bama, Arky, LSU and UGA every year then Malzahn is your guy. If you want to get back to beating the bullies on the block, I suggest we make a change to more of a Power attack. We can do it, but not if we have to run 80+ plays a game to be successful. Just think about that for a minute and try to rationalize how to run 80+ plays a game against LSU and Alabama….its ridiculous. The QB would be bludgeoned to death. Chizik understands this…..and Malzahn doesn’t or can’t.

I could see a situation where Chizik talked to both coordinators about adjusting game plans

to compensate for weaknesses on both sides of the ball. I don’t see Chiz being all control freakish with Malzahn OR Roof…there’s just only so much that you can do with a weak offensive line……

What I found interesting is that Chiz kept saying that Kiehl Frazier was understanding the offense better, but I didn’t really see anything different out of Frazier (granted he wasn’t calling his own plays)-but he did seem more secure with the ball and didn’t throw any ill-advised balls.

I wish Malzahn the best! He’s a great coach; Arky St is lucky!!

THANK YOU...

Finally, somebody is willing to give Coach Malzahn the credit he deserves. You guys just want to give Cam Newton all the credit for 2010 and take all of it away from Gus Malzahn. Then, you forget what he did with Chris Todd. Really folks, your defense of Chizik has blinded you to the high level of coaching that Gus Malzahn brought with him. I’m not saying he’s the best coach ever, but I am saying you respect that man! He is a great coach and Arkansas State probably just got the best coach they will have for a long time.

I like Malzhan,

….but I don’t think he’s necessarily the best in the country. All coordinators have flaws and tendencies. And while it’s out of context, even Chris Brown said this morning that not even Bill Walsh can scheme his way out of a weak offensive line.

…..There’s just a superb piece up with Brown on Hologo’s offense, over at Shakin’ the Southland. If you want to really dig into some nuts and bolts, it’s a great read.

Yeah good stuff...

The adaptability is key. I’ve said a number of times I’m not too big on either type of scheme. I want the kind of coordinator that can adapt to what the defense is giving them. That’s what I would like to see.

I think they had some pass plays called..

….for Frazier. He did roll out and look downfield a few times. Ended up keeping. I’m sure he’s was also told not to take a risk with the ball, especially since Virginia was letting us run the Wildcat against base defense.

Frazier did make better decisions and didn’t get himself (or Auburn) into trouble…so he definitely gets credit for that….It is hard to judge how capable he is when he only gets a couple of snaps here and there. I’ve heard that rhythm thing can be pretty important….
