College football's version of the CIA

LaVar Arrington just doesn't get it....

There is a ton of media coverage right now about the hire of Bill O'Brien as the new head coach at Penn State, and rightfully so. He replaces a man who had coached at PSU in some capacity for 62 years. That is a long time in this profession.

Replacing legendary coaches never seems to work out good for the new hires. I can think of several examples, like Ray Perkins of Bama, who replaced the Bear, and Earl Bruce of Ohio State who replaced Woody "Giving him the business" Hayes. Of course, Auburn is no stranger to this inevitable fact. After the retirement of legendary coach Ralph Shug Jordan, Auburn promptly hired Doug Barfield. We know that didn't go too well. Barfield went 27-27-1, before Miss State was forced to forfeit their two games against Auburn giving him an official 29-25-1 record. In his five years as AU head coach, Barfield never fielded a team that was victorious over Alabama.

So, history says this won't be a good venture for O'Brien.

Former Penn State players, past and present are upset. They want a Penn State guy to be their leader. Many have already spoke out against going outside of PSU for the new man, including Penn State legend and NFL linebacker LaVar Arrington.

Arrington needs to understand one thing, and one thing only. Penn State has to change it's entire image as a University, because of the terrible abuse that one of it's football coaches committed. The horrible and criminal acts of Jerry Sandusky has brought shame to Penn State, and the administration HAS to change the image of the football program. Bringing in a "Penn State guy" would be interpreted as giving the fox the keys to the hen house. Get a clue!

Exactly what happened..

BCS playoff...

It won't happen next year. You can guarantee it will happen very soon though. The BCS will institute a playoff system of some sort. In a story published by The Sporting News, we find this...

"It gets done," a high-ranking BCS official told Sporting News Monday evening.

Here’s how: over the next six months, the leaders of the sport will meet at least four times to iron out a plan that protects the importance of the regular season—the one aspect BCS leaders believe separates the game from every other—while embracing a new frontier for the poll-driven sport.

It begins Tuesday here in New Orleans with a meeting of conference commissioners, and includes meetings in Dallas in February and Miami in April. Another meeting in June is also likely, especially considering the magnitude of the potential change.

As college football fans, we have been clamoring for a change since 2002. Nothing. The tragedy committed against Auburn in 2004 demanded a change. Nothing. Finally, after all the BS from the BCS, they finally have to admit, that a change is needed. The Bowl games would have, and should have been much different. The biggest loser this year? Arkansas. The Razorbacks had the right to compete in a BCS game, and yet were denied because nobody wanted a conference to dominate the BCS Bowl system. Too late!

Like it or not, the SEC dominated way beyond the imagination of the BCS brain-trust. Much to their dismay, trying to create conference parity has blown up in their face. The SEC is the big bully right now, and there isn't anyone who can knock 'em down.

2012 SEC schedules...

I am thankful that I was not selected to be on the panel for setting up this SEC football schedule. What an undertaking, and actually, I think they performed rather well. I visited the official SEC website, and found this as part of their release...

The 2012 schedule is not based on any other previous or future scheduling formats. The SEC Athletics Directors will convene in Spring 2012 to begin formulating scheduling principles for the 2013 season and beyond.

"The SEC transition team and our athletic directors did a great job with significant logistical challenges in a short time frame in developing the 2012 football conference schedule," said SEC Commissioner Mike Slive. "The ability to come together for the conference is what makes the SEC so strong and that was evident yet again in this process."

It could not have been easy, but the key phrase in that statement is the very first sentence. It's clear that they do not intend to use this schedule as their platform towards future scheduling. Look for more changes, and chaos by some fan bases is those changes.

In case you haven't seen Auburn's 2012 SEC schedule, it's HERE.

You had me at hello Jordan-Hare...

If you haven't paid close attention to my many comments this week, I was more than a little excited when I learned that Brian VanGorder would be our next DC. In his opening press conference, he solidified that excitement with correctly pronouncing Jordan-Hare in this statement...

"I really, really can't wait to feel the excitement of being able to walk into Jordan-Hare Stadium"

Details are what makes the difference in preparation, and execution is what makes the difference in winning. BVG sure has started walking the walk of a man committed to excellence.

Which leads me to...

The comment of the week...

This week the winner is Col Angus with this remark...

Oh BVG is the real deal.

Dawg fan has been crying the blues ever since he left and lamenting the loss of fire and attitude that the defense had under his watch. He was considered Richts enforcer, the guy who made folks toe the line. You WILL play like your hair is on fire for BVG or you won’t play….he puts up with no BS….and he has the frame and physicality to back it up.

I know this, if you are playing for BVG AND CGC….you better bring you hardhat, lunch pail and blue collar work ethic or else you might as well go home because you aren’t going to enjoy your time on the Plains.

We already know that Chizik takes no amnesty when a player falls out of line. He has told us time and again "If you see him an Auburn uniform again, you will know that he has done what it takes to be back on the team". Added to that as proof, were the comments coming out of the practices leading up to the Bowl game this year. When Chizik took the reigns himself, every AU defender said they noticed a huge difference in the way they were preparing.

The fact that BVG was Chizik's only choice, "not five, not ten, but one", leads me to believe that they have the same ideas and philosophies as to how to achieve excellence on defense.

Recruiting...

Don't forget we will have an all day thread up on February 1st for National Signing Day. Things may not look so good right now, but trust me, it's all just a mirage. NSD will hold some BIG surprises for the Auburn faithful. Until then, remember the flip of a top ranked OT to Auburn. No matter what the reasoning, he chose Auburn, instead of anyone else.

My take...

There has been some very heated discussion on the site about our outlook, and consequential opinions, as fans. We have lovingly called each other a part of the gloom and doom crowd or a part of the happy shiny crowd. I actually think that is a natural, and healthy way to carry these differences of opinion. I truly enjoy the differing views, and appreciate that many are happy to share those views here.

With that said, I feel each of us should continue to expect bigger and better accomplishments of our athletic program. Not just football, every single aspect of our athletics. From the administration to athletes, to us as fans. Strive to be the best, without sacrificing the unrelenting support of our Tigers of all sports. It's the Auburn way.

WAR EAGLE!

You’re exactly right that Penn St. needs a complete image make-over, and , yet, even scandals of the highest magnitude lose strength a little more quickly nowadays when there’s always something next – something else to take the spotlight of shame.

RE the switch of Pat Miller

Here are some commitment totals from Rivals
Ala-27
LSU-20
Miami-30
Tex-24
There are several others in the top 25 in the recruiting rankings who are at or over 20 commits and most are either at or already above their 85 scholorship. Other than Saban, who is famous for medical and other reasons to oversign, I really think that we could pick up some more switches just because there is no room at other schools.

You could say we are picking up their castoffs but Pat Miller is certainly not a castoff and there are others out there also.

Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?

Bama must be in a tailspin..

Their program has to be falling apart right?

Tennessee confirms a story first reported on govols247 this morning: Alabama’s Sal Sunseri is UT’s new DC: (FREE READ)

Both coordinators are leaving, several team members are leaving early for the draft, they must know the ship is sinking.

I'm sorry, but as long as Saban is at Bama....

I am attributing NONE of their success to Kirby Smart.

Smart may be learning a ton…but what makes Bama, Bama, is Saban and how he runs that program. Bama has pulled talent for years and only until Saban showed up did that talent begin to REALLY produce.

I wouldn’t mind at all if Smart left, but I certainly don’t think their defense would take a step back as a result.

I really hate that we lost Sunseri

but as long as the coaches we lose are moving on to higher positions (McElwain from OC to HC; Sunseri from Position Coach to DC), then I think we will still attract some quality co-ordinators. The biggest loss we have had so far was missing out on Pease. I really liked what I saw in him and think he would’ve done great things for the offense. Not sure how I feel about Schottenheimer.

You're probably right

I guess Schottenheimer will at least be used to dealing with a HC that can be abrasive. I just loved the balance and schemes he ran at Boise. He got a lot out of the talent there, and against pretty good competition (in the bowls and usually one marquee game per season). As long as whoever we get can use TE’s effectively, we’ll adjust okay. Any word yet on who’s coming for you guys? That will probably be a more important hire than our OC, anyway.

Because we know that Bama is going to run a pro style....

Our hire is more important because we aren’t sure what direction we are truly going in until the OC is named.
Saban is going to run the same offense regardless of who comes in, so the only suspense is going to be, how good are they at running a pro style offense.

I was really surprised they even looked at Pease, the day Saban starts throwing the ball all over the field will be the day he stops worrying about playing dominating defense. It aint gonna happen.

I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.

Maybe that's why Pease was so interesting to me.

Regardless, I agree with you on this one wholeheartedly.

Reggie Ragland has already chimed in on his displeasure of Sal leaving

The folks over at RBR are showing some serious nerves over this news. If Kirby Smart takes a head coaching job, my money is on some recruits jumping ship over there.

Maybe you need to read it again. Everyone congradulated him. He was a position coach. His son, Vinnie, is even staying.

And Reggie Ragland said he understood that it was just business. He is still solid. Kirby will absolutely be gone in another year or two. He will make a great HC. I really don’t see much of a change as far as recruiting goes. Nick is the key.

GREAT POST KoolBell

On the PSU thing, BVG, recruiting, and your take on our conversation in comments I agree wholeheartedly. Couldn’t have said it better.

In my opinion Lavar Arrington should be more worried about Ted Roof coaching linebackers at linebacker U, than what kind of PSU ties the head coach has. Ted Roof coaching guys like Lavar Arrington to me is akin to give a five year old a rolex. Maybe I am being to harsh, but that hire just baffles me.

I expect big things out of BVG and it will be his demand for the details that will deliver those big things. Great correlation between knowing the pronunciation and attention to detail. I can’t believe how many times someone who could just do a google search has our mascot wrong or the name of our school. Its not that hard, but it makes a big difference to the fans.

Sometimes I call out the doom and gloomers and sometimes I get called out as a doom and gloomer. Either way, it is good to have these disagreements among ourselves

I wish Coach Daniels had elaborated on his conversation with Les about his mistakes in the NC. He probably wouldn’t have but the reporter could have at least asked.

"Spanning the globe...."

Nice post Jim McKay,….I think you got everything covered for the week!!

One bit of news that hasn’t been widely reported is the visit by Jordan Moore this weekend, He’s a fast rising safety recruit with track star speed, on a physical 206 lb frame…..something that has been on my wish list for a while. I love that we have a bunch of talented speedy corners on the roster and coming in, but you need somebody physical back in the secondary that will make opposing WR’s grow alligator arms on those intermediate to long passes. Florence will be one of those guys but we need another hardhitter back there to back him up and play nickle. I hope we can land him

On the OC search, I’m not sure what the criteria is that Chizik is looking for but it certainly appears he wants someone to run a pro-style offense, or at least BE ABLE to run it. I certainly don’t expect a BIG name that would be up for an NFL position but I hope we can land Koetter. Of all the names I’ve heard, he is the only one I hear as a “great play caller”. That tells me he always is aware of the opposing defense’s weakness’ depending on down and distance and his ability to attack that weakeness. Say what you will about Malzahn, but I would not consider that one of his strengths. Regardless of who we get, as long as he has a pretty good reputation calling plays and developing QB’s, I will be super happy.

Speaking of developing QB’s, it looks like the Chik Fil A bowl was Trotters last hurrah. Rumor being spread around on AU247 is that Trotter has told his friends he is not coming back next year……and while I wish he would come back, I can’t blame him for going out on a high note and calling it a career. I think Trotter would be the incumbent going into spring practice but with Moseley, Frazier and Pike waiting eagerly in the wings, I don’t know if I’d want to be put in the position of being named the starter only to get yanked again if I have a slump. And who wants to sit on the bench, when you aren’t in school and could be out in the real world trying to start your career?
Wait….in that case….maybe I would stay!!

I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.

If you were like me you turned the channel right after that Czech skier destroyed himself on the ski jump and before they started showing competitive shuffleboard from New Zealand.

Except for those RARE instances when they had on Evel Kneival or one of the heavyweight legends fighting. Its hard to believe that you could see Muhamad Ali fight some Ham n Egger on free TV!!! I think I remember seeing him take on Ken Norton and George Foreman on Wide World of Sports. Those may have been replays but I remeber being enthralled all the same.

Colonel...

For once you and I agree. Jordan Moore would be a great pick up for Auburn. He’s completely under rated and he flat out knocks players on offense out cold. We need a guy like him badly. He is so fast he doesn’t have to have great ball instincts, but from what I’ve seen and heard about the kid he has those too. He could be the best safety of this recruiting class. I think Auburn should go all out after this kid.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

Believe me folks I hate to admit this...

But, I really think this year’s recruiting title goes to…drumb roll…The Ala…nope… The Georgia Bulldogs! The fact they just got Gurley WOW!! They have by far the best running back tandem in the country. I think Gurley is under rated and everybody already knows how I feel about Keith Marshall. Congrats to UGA. The backfield they will have for at least three years is down right UNREAL! I did not include Crowell in any of that as I don’t think he’ll be at Georgia next season.

And it aint all about running backs!!

I had on rose colored glasses because of our running backs this year and phhhhfffttttt…..thats how that went.

Georgia will still win the East but I think their offensive line will keep them from beating whoever represents the West. Richts offense rarely puts two running backs in the same backfield ….unlike Borges with Caddy and Ronnie…..so having more than one stud doesn’t help them that much more other than keeping them pretty fresh. All that being said though, Richt has a pretty poor track record developing these killer running backs they keep recruiting. The only Superstar he developed over the last decade is Knowshown Moreno. There have beens scads of other but they all either end up getting injured or waste their potential.

Mark Richt is . . .

. . . 3-1 against Alabama and 7-4 against Auburn. His team is one of only two teams in the league to have appeared in four SEC Championship Games in the last decade. As a quarterbacks coach, offensive coordinator, and head coach, he managed to develop two Heisman Trophy winners, the then-winningest quarterback in Division I-A history, and a No. 1 draft pick.

anyone else need a reminder about how bare Tubs left the cupboard? I think before the bowl game I heard that only 5 signees from Tubs last class are still on the team. And then I see this list of 4 senior all star games and we have only 2 players in one game. A tackle and a (drumrollllllllll) DEEP SNAPPER!
