Tebowing

Since I'm not much for boundaries, I thought it might be interesting to cross the line this morning to mix a little football with religion. I know this is a sensitive area and I understand if nobody bites, but Mr. Tebow puts himself out there every week, so I thought I might do the same, in my very little way. Alot has been said about Tim Tebow's public display of his faith, first at U of F with his eye black, now at Denver with his kneeling and public prayer, and all along with his willingness to share how he feels about things. I, for one, admire the heck out of the guy and look to him as a role model, not only for myself but for my kids. I also feel like God appreciates Tebow's efforts....it has certainly gotten some press....and as they say in the public relations business, any exposure is good exposure. That being said, if I had to bet, I would put my money on the Patriots. They look like the better team, and I'm not so sure God is too concerned about the score; he's already won the game. What say you?

I say Tebow's detractors need to ...

.. Take a look at the following article from ESPN’s Rick Reilly titled: “I Believe In Tebow”

http://espn.go.com/espn/story/_/id/7455943/believing-tim-tebow

But I’m with you Joe, Patriots win this one and I say it won’t be close.

I've never seen...

a player that creates more controversy than Tim Tebow, yet he doesn’t do anything that really brings it on personally. He is a good man and lives his life the right way. I don’t know why so many have so much venom against him. He’s never done anything to them. He doesn’t say bad things about anybody. I’ll never understand how people can hate Tim Tebow like they do and they are so loud about it. I don’t think they would hate him if they knew the guy. Right now, there are more people that hate Tim Tebow than hate Michael Vick. For that matter, you didn’t hear the huge screams when Rae Carruth murdered his girlfriend. Ugh, the hatred of Tim Tebow is a microcosm of what’s wrong with America. They hate him so much. I don’t think it’s necessarily because of his faith. I think they hate him because he’s so clean without any scandal and he continues to succeed. The fact is, America doesn’t like to see people succeed without any mud on them. That’s exactly what Tim Tebow is doing and they hate him for it.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

by Sparkey on Jan 14, 2012 12:16 PM CST reply actions

it's not him per se

A lot of people have venom towards religion itself. That Tebow gets a lot of press for his faith just makes him a target. Unfortunately, many people have trouble sorting the difference between a person and an ideology. You can’t explain that in a 90 second spot on ESPN where people will get it, so they don’t try.

Sparkey, I think you expressing your opinion is wonderful, but I laugh at how sure you are that you are right on a daily basis. Doesn’t it get tiring trying to prove it all the time? You’re a microcosm!

Besides the controversy, just look at the way the guy throws the football. It ain’t pretty, and maybe he can clean it up, but how long can he get away with throwing like that? I like him, I don’t care that he’s religious, but if I was a Broncos fan, I’d not be very confident in them consistently winning.

All the hatred...

…..is making me pull for Tebow more. I watched pretty much the whole playoff game last week. Tebow has detractors that hate the religion bit, and those that think he can’t play quarterback in the NFL.

…..I’ve always been suspicious of those do a lot of chest-thumping about God and Jesus, particularly those whose actions don’t match their words. There are a lot of great people where I live who wear their religion proudly, and that’s fine. Using religion like snake oil to manipulate people burns me up. I’ve seen nothing to indicate that Tebow is in the latter category.

…..In any event, it’s a free country. Whether an athlete spikes the ball, Tebow’s, or flashes devil horns, it’s free speech. That is, unless it’s deemed offensive by the powers that be. So no, you’re not free to do the throat slash, or flip the crowd the bird…

…..As to the experts, I’ll have to defer, mostly. Wait a minute, did a guy who can’t play quarterback in the NFL hit an 80 yard TD pass in overtime in a playoff game against the Steeler defense? Yes, he did!

......Drowning in cool elixir.

Tebow is polarizing.....which is ok

What I don’t like to see is the attacks on him because of his religious beliefs…..make that his Christian beliefs. One thing I think we can all agree on is that the scorn and derision he receives would not happen if he was of another faith. He gets attacked on the same order as Tom Cruise for his belief in scientology…..which I also think is unfair. This country was founded by people seeking to avoid religious persecution….. not to avoid religion, and it really burns me up when the folks who claim to be the most open minded and tolerant people on the planet, can’t tolerate the religious beliefs of people they disagree with.
Tebow doesn’t force his beliefs on anyone. If the media didn’t want to hear from him, they could just stop putting a mic in his face and asking him questions!
I don’t really care if Tebow wins or loses but I admire him because he is uncompromising in his values…..seemingly. I root for him because soooo many people say he can’t do things….and then does them anyway, kind of like another guy we know, who likes to make his critics look like idiots. He is a winner, and America loves a winner, which is why the media establishment wants to make him to look like a fool…..so people won’t emulate him or his beliefs. I don’t know why the media wouldn’t want to celebrate a guy like Tebow, who actually does great things away from the football field. The fact that they go out of their way to disparage him says something really disturbing about our media and the agenda of the people in charge of the media.
As far as being a role model, I’ve seen this act before….and it doesn’t usually turn out well. Tebow is human, he is fallible and he will make mistakes and when he does, he will get crucified by the media. I hope he doesn’t but I used to be a HUGE mark for Steve Garvey….need I say more? The only guy who I have ever been a huge fan of, that walked the talk to this day is Dale Murphy. Bottom line is no athlete should be a role model for your kids based on what they do on the field. The only role model for your kids should be you…..and if you don’t feel you are role model material, thats ok, but maybe you should work on changing that. The most important thing a kid can see is that it is always possible for them to change, no matter how old you are or whatever mistakes you have made in the past.

The nail has been struck in this post..

The gist of it is that most Americans do not understand the concept of our Constitution. The proclamation clearly states the “Freedom of Religion” not freedom from religion.
As paltry as that sounds, there it is. The plain cold truth of it.
Tebow is practicing his religious beliefs, and it gets publicized. There are many that don’t like that, therefore, they don’t like Tebow.
Thanks for bringing this up Joe, and well done.

Not quite

Freedom of religion is freedom from religion if that is what you choose. No one can force religion on you in this country. That’s silly.

Actually, 100% correct am I...

I respectfully disagree with your findings in this matter.
Article 1 states that Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof
That is freedom OF religion in context with this post. Tebow should be able to pray in public, as long as everyone/anyone else is not forced into the same, there is no wrong in his behavior.

I think

you think I am saying that a person has a right not to be subjected to religion vicariously through and from others. That is not what I’m saying. Religion is all around and one can’t help but be exposed to it. My argument is that a person has a right not to participate in it—e.g. not establishing a religion for them. That, in my mind, is freedom from religion, which in itself is freedom of religion.

But don’t take that to mean I’m one of these people who want to remove Christmas and erase words off currency and such. Those things are so ingrained in the culture that you can’t be free of them, and if you’re that intolerant, you’re just SOL.

I take the Libertarian view and believe that everyone is better off if they are tolerant of others’ beliefs and respect them. To each their own.

I don't believe what Tebow believes and sometimes I roll my eyes at him.....

but that doesn’t mean that I hate him for being religious. Clearly, he likes to talk about it, but he also lives his life in a way that backs up that talk. I can respect that. I think something that perpetuates the hate is the ridiculous amount of attention that the media (ESPN) spends on him. Personally, I don’t think that he’s a talented quarterback (he obviously doesn’t suck-but he’s no Manning or Brady, yet). So I’m not sure if all the Hate is really about the religion or the amount of attention that one mediocre quarterback gets……it’s easy to blame religion, but in this case, religion might be a red herring…..

Nobody

in his right mind would ever say that Tebow doesn’t have the right to his religious beliefs, but the contempt for him comes with how he wears it on his sleeve. Ordinarily, that’s not a problem for the average person, but with Tebow, there’s always a camera around. He’s at his job. How often do you see someone in a non-religious vocation constantly doing the same thing? You don’t.

The Broncos pay him to be a football player, not an evangelist. Fans watch him for similar reasons. While no one suggests he can’t be both privately, why it is necessary to have the latter constantly shown? He uses the exposure to deliver his personal beliefs and I don’t think that’s what he’s paid to do. What about a music star that uses their bully pulpit to deliver personal beliefs you don’t agree with? They shouldn’t do it either, especially if I just bought a ticket to see them sing and not preach.

Tebow can say all the prayers he wants to himself but I don’t believe he should be evangelizing when he’s supposed to be playing football. That being said, I still think he’s a great kid and role model and I do root for him.

Rec'd about the wearing it on his sleeve sentiment

And lest that upset anyone, I’d argue that one can easily be devout, and not draw (as much) attention to it. Look at Kurt Warner and how he handled himself. He was strong in his faith, but didn’t let the media turn it into some sort of perpetual sideshow.

But I’m also with WEA in that I think he’s had a great attitude in every regard, and what he may be lacking in QB skills currently, he makes up for with determination and leadership. Good for him.

Yes yes yes yes

My problem with Tebow is that he uses his religion to call attention to himself. You’ll be hard pressed to find a player in the NFL who isn’t a Christian and doesn’t give credit to God for his abilities, but you won’t find any who uses it to draw attention to themselves like Tebow does.

Being a Christian is OBVIOUSLY a big part of who he is as a person....

He grew up as a MISSIONARY working in third world countries ACTIVELY trying to spread the word of Jesus Christ. Saying he doesn’t have to wear it on his sleeve is akin to telling me to “quit being so white”. I don’t any other way to be, and neither does Tebow. When he does the “Praise God” pose in the end zone…..I actually believe he means it.

Nobody has the right to tell him to tone it down or to not espouse his beliefs…not a soul. What people DO have the right to do is a) not listen to him and walk away , b) not put him on TV and c) not employee him. Although its a little sketchy whether the Broncos could release him for excersizing his 1st amendment rights. He may not be employed byt the Broncos to evangelize, but as long as he is doing the job that he IS being paid for….I’m not really sure they can say he CAN"T evangelize.

If you don’t agree with Tebow and his religion, you can always vote with your clicker to watch something else. I’m not a fan of organized religion but I do respect the people who do believe in their religion and use it as a motivator to do good works for their family and their community. Say what you will about Tebow’s beliefs, but he is an extraordinary young man that visits and comforts suffering children when other young men his age are playing video games, going clubbing or wasting their money on material things. Tebow is a class act and people should be able to see beyond the religious aspect of his personality and see him as someone to be emulated for what he ACTUALLY DOES, not what he says.

Matthew 6:5-6

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
