Auburn at a Crossroads

When you think about Auburn's football history over the past half century, one word comes to mind - fortunate. There are inherent advantages to being the "state university," whether you are talking academics or football. When your state school goes on a run, you better have an answer. If you don't, then you become Miss State.

Auburn has always answered.

Auburn people have been fortunate to have the right person running its football program at critical times in its battle with cross-state rival Alabama.

Whether it was Shug Jordan averaging nearly eight wins a season (against a 10 game schedule) during Bear Bryant's heyday or Terry Bowden going 11-0 a year after Alabama won the national championship in 1992, the program has always found a way to respond.

Over the past five years, Alabama has raised the stakes. Again, Auburn has found a way to hold serve. The result is three consecutive national titles for the state with no professional sports.

What makes Auburn the most successful land grant football program in the country? There's no question money and leadership top the list. But more importantly, it has been the head football coach roaming the sidelines.

Where would this program be today had Jordan not kept Auburn relevant during the run of arguably the greatest college coach of all time? Shug was more than just a name on a stadium. He won titles in a time when SEC teams refused to play on Auburn's campus.

Jordan spent his career playing most of his conference home games in Birmingham, Columbus and Atlanta. It's amazing the Iron Bowl is considered the top rivalry in America when you consider Auburn played the vast majority of the contests on the road at Alabama's home stadium, whether it be Legion Field or Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Not until the end of Jordan's career did the majority of SEC programs finally agree to play games at Auburn, and for once, level the playing field for the Tigers. This is not ancient history. We are talking as recently as 35 years ago.

Where would Auburn be today without Pat Dye arriving in December 1980? If you didn't live it, it's hard to put into words how downtrodden Auburn people were before his arrival. Alabama and Georgia had won the previous three national championships and many wondered whether Auburn had the money or desire to pick itself up off the mat.

They had lost nine straight to Alabama and Bryant was at the apex of his career. If Jordan held serve for 25 years, then Dye kicked the door down and took firm control of the state for more than a decade.

It was a staggering turn of events for the state of Alabama. Beginning with Auburn's win in 1982, the program has dominated for the past 30 years, going 17-13 against Alabama from 1982 to 2011.

Now Auburn faces another crossroads - another defining moment. As disappointing as it was to watch Alabama claim the national championship last week, think how much worse it would have been had 2010 never happened.

Like Jordan, Dye and Bowden before him, Gene Chizik seems to be the right man at the right time for this Auburn program. Many haters in the state will try to brand him as a one hit wonder - somebody that never could have won without Cam Newton and Nick Fairley. Despite the obvious ignorance of such statement, it's one Chizik will hear until his team returns to the top of the SEC.

The hiring of new defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder sends a strong message to Tuscaloosa. Auburn has no intention of surrendering the state to Bama. Tuscaloosa is riding high. There's no arguing Nick Saban's success. But don't let their excitement cloud the truth.

The Auburn program has never been better. Not in its 100+ year existence has there been a group of athletes like the ones on campus today. Auburn's coaching staff is as good as any in America.

Alabama has raised the stakes - again. Auburn has always answered. History proves it.

We are all fortunate.

It wil happen again!

Auburn is a great school that likes a challenge, doing what can not be done, we relish the underdog role, in short we are winners. We are confident, we live the Auburn Creed, that is based in faith on which the school was founded on to start with, faith, hope, love, perseverance, and family. Instead of the state. Maybe that is why the state school, has to always tell us how great they are and have such a inferiority complex. It tells us all we need to know about them by their nonstop bragging abut how many NC they have now.
I read an article a couple of years ago that talked about the second sister state schools and how Auburn had out won all of them but Miami, and we may have passed them now due to our recent years. How we are strategically located to succeed and how we have done more with less over the years. The article talked about how if you are an Auburn fan you have some kind of connection and because of that those of us that know Auburn, believe in Auburn because of it’s values and people. That faith and people make us winners and good people. Russia fell because it had neither a faith or a people to believe in and just
Iike America, Auburn will always believe because they have a faith and a belief in people.

The future has never looked brighter, tremble Bama, Auburn is going to win he next 30 years too!

I don't know if the hiring of BVG sends a message to Tuscaloosa....

I do think that the hiring of BVG sends a powerful message to the Auburn Faithful. While I think that it is helpful that our biggest rival is successful, because it keeps pushing us to do better. I think over the Chizik tenure, we are more likely to move away from thinking so much about West Vance and thinking more about what’s going on in our backyard….because there’s a lot to be proud of and a lot to be paying attention to…..

Incidentally, CGC anytime you wanna introduce the new OC, we’re ready and listening….just sayin’.

Absolutely

Chizik is the right man at the right time, and readers of All In have a certain appreciation for that fact.

Food for thought.

Just remember folks, Harvey Updyke will always represent the university of mullets in turdscloosa. That’s something that “they” can’t spin or spend their way out of!

I don't buy that

Even after his alleged ‘rock star’ appearance in NOLA last week. Most Bama fans think his conduct reprehensible. While there is always a small percentage of any fanbase that’s toxic I just don’t believe that many Alabama fans sympathize with Updyke.

No one ever wants to admit that

one team being strong is good for the other. Its not just coincidence or good coaching that makes these successes parallel. Success breeds success. Good coaches need the right environment and stout competition to be great coaches.

The bar is set really high in the SEC west right now. Miles/Saban/Chizik/Petrino all need each other to be successful. Top players want to play with or against the best competition possible and the SEC west is a great example of that.

I guarantee that Chizik and co. are truly glad that UA won the championship. It keeps the college football spotlight in state and in the SEC west. Auburn fans hate it because they have to deal with the UA fan fallout. Auburn doesn’t need to live up to or compare to UA or anyone else. Just keep high standards and be proud. War Eagle!

OC news

Reports coming from the big campus recruiting visits say that Chizik told receiving recruits that we would be running some pro set as well as other formations. Speculation in the media is that means NFL guy. He is still playing mum on who.
Doug Nussmeier is the new OC at UAT from Washington.

Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?

If it’s Tom Clements, then we’ll know soon………but I bet it’s a guy whose name hasn’t even been floated…..

If it's Clements...

…..lets hope he’s better on ball security than the Packers showed Sunday. And how ’bout Brandon Jacobs turning the corner on Charles Woodson for the last TD? War Eagle!

I am not sure if was Packers ball security or....

the Giants just playing lights out aggressive defense. Just like ours is going to be next year under VanGorder.

Wasn't last night only the 2nd loss for the Packers?

The Giants’ D was pretty amazing…..and Eli Manning showed why he’s an elite quarterback, even if he still looks like a college baller….The 49ers/Giants game is going to be pretty interesting!

They finished the season 15-2. The other loss was to KC after they had wrapped everything up

Interesting...

I haven’t heard this name at all. But man that would be something. Only one thing doesn’t fit… he was interviewed to be the PSU coach. Why would he take a job at AU as an OC?

I am not saying your wrong. I am just saying I don’t understand the fit.

Yet.

But I could get used to it.

I swear… if I were king for a day… I move the current CIA director aside and put Gene Chizik at the helm.

I am pretty darn sure the USA wouldn’t have any worries on losing secrets.

I don't understand this one...

Sorry bammers.

You got a young guy. An unproven guy.

Nick must know something to take such a risk. But maybe when you have 3 BCS championships… you need not worry any more.

I hope he has picked wrong.

Nice article, but I have to take exception to the proposition that Auburn is the most successful land grant football program in the country. It certainly is in the top 10, but TheOSU is a land grant college, and by most observable metrics is a more successful football program. Florida, LSU and Tennessee are also Land grant colleges and I suspect they have some claim to the title over Auburn. (And not to be too picky,Shug Jordan’s record was closer to 7 wins a season, not 8.)
