We've had a week to let it sink in...
..and I still haven't figured out how I should deal with the fact that the Tuscaloosa crew stand in the same spot we did one year previous. There are two choices I see:
1. Do what was done to us last year--minimize the achievement with statements such as the following: "You shouldn't have even been there" "The other team just didn't show up" "You already lost once to them" "If you hadn't had this player and that player, you wouldn't be anywhere" "You are still on probabtion (I guess)" etc. etc. etc.
2. Take the high road and congratulate them on the achievement, which included kicking our own butts into the ground, and just sit back and enjoy the fact that the State of Alabama just won it's third straight championship.
I know that, being the "classy" fan base that we are (or at least claim to be), we should probably embrace course number 2. However, half, no more than half, of the joy of a championship is the recognition, grudging or not, that you get from respected (or otherwise) rivals. Auburn got ZERO ZIP NADA from anyone. I am still hearing "sCam Newton" and "DIrty Fairley" from the Dawgs up the road from where I live. They absolutely REFUSE to take their 2010 beating. They will rag me mercilessly on this year and 2009, but there seems to a great amnesia regarding the 2010 season. My best Auburn friend quite accurately responded to my concerns with the trite-but-true "haters gonna hate," but it STILL doesn't make me feel any better.
The fact that much of the fan base of the other school are proud of a certain herbicide-wielding maniac (witness the photos for which he posed) makes the turn of events last week even more stomach-churning. For another whole year (oh heck, for the rest of our lives) we will be exposed to "GOT 14?" and more Houndstooth Hagiography than we could shake a bag of Golden Flake at. I WANT to take the high road, but AAAAAGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!
I know, I see a third road, yeah, I'LL just have amnesia about this year--right--I'll just cling to my 2010 National Championship long-sleve T-shirt and watch my 2010 deluxe box DVD set of the championship season and say we have eight national championships (ten if you count 1983 and 2004) and...and...and....

Very good Mike
I too have upped my dislike of West Vance after this year. If we use the UAT yardstick we do have 8 Nattys.
There were comments on another thread of how most UAT fans did not embrace Harvey and the ones who posed with him for pics were in the minority. Bullshit in Spades!! More of them love him.
While I agree there are lot of great Bama fans, the vast majority are totally in la la land. They have no idea where the stadium is, much less the admissions office, and the only reason they are fans is that they grew up in the Bear era where everyone loves a winner. Bear Bryant was a great football coach, maybe the best ever, and he spawned a following of non high school graduates that got hooked on to the program because it was winning. That is the only reason.
I wish someone would take a “man/woman on the street poll” and ask 100 people who they pull for and did they go to school there or did they have a close family member that did. My feeling is that you would find that Auburn fans either attended or had a close family member that did and the Alabama fans would say they only pull for Bama because " they are the best". I have heard that many times.
What this amounts to is that Auburn people have a vested interest in their fandom and UAT folks do not.
I am in a business that deals with a lot of people and I have seen a car with an Alabama Alumini Association decal in the window. When I asked when he went to Bama he replied he did not but if you donate money to the school they will make you an alumini. Great, I worked hard for my degree and now I find out all I had to do was give some money and I could be an alumini.
Nuff said.
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
Update, we now have 10 Nattys by their yardstick
I know I am not being very “Classy” but I can’t help it right now.
A past statement on WarBlogel defines it best, “Alabama fans get a case of Crimson Tourettes every time they see a video”
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
I can't agree with this comment at all..
By your reasoning, I should never be able to write about the team I pull for, much less scream “War Eagle”. Regardless, I believe in Auburn, and love it!
I have seen this stated elsewhere..

It may be true, and I am not doubting you, it’s just so hard to believe.

I will make two changes to my comment
What the guy said is that they would make you a member of the Alumni Assoc. It is a technicality but really the same thing to me.
I don’t believe it is all Bama fans that fall into this category but it is a large percentage.
Maybe it is because true Bama fans/graduates have more class than to act in such an uncivilized manner, thereby staying under the radar. I understand and respect your feelings Kool but I have seen it too many times not to believe it.
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
Kool, go to the UA alumni assoc web page
When you go to the “join” link the first thing you will see is 3 catagories.

Attended UA
UA Friend
Following is a list of donor levels
Do you believe it now?

I read the statement on the mebership page...
You are correct in that it says any fan can become a member.

My understanding of the term alumni...
…..is basically “formerly attended.” Some folks think it means “graduated.” Evidently, “watched ‘em on th’ Tee Vee” is ok at the Capstone.

Been there...
…done that. But it’s cheaper to get a free one from the MIL who can’t figure out that it’s turning off every ten minutes because the sleep timer is turned on. “Y’all can come get it off my curb, ‘cause I’m done with it!”

My brother got lucky like that once at our local thrift store. It was a 60" hd tv. It wasn’t a flat panel, but it was a damn nice tv. Absolutely nothing wrong with with it. It was just tuned to one of the input channels.

I was in Costco in early '08....
after we had beaten Bama for the sixth time just a month and a half prior. Bama had just finished the season 7-6, losing 4 of their last five games including one to La. -Monroe…..all under their messiah Nick Saban. Some Turd in a Alabama sweatshirt and cap had the temerity to come up to me (sporting an Aubie cap) and say “ROLLL TIDE” as I passed him. I dismissed him with the six finger salute and a scowl that said “Please!!”
His response, “The Tide’s coming back!!”. My retort….“We’re all waiting!! Try harder next year!!”
My point? Tide fan doesn’t care how well we are doing, or how crummy they are doing. They still are going to act like the just won a championship. And you know what? I’m going to feel that way about Auburn everyday. Our program is every bit as good as theirs and HAS BEEN BETTER for the last 30 years. They’ve won three championships in that time, we have one, should have at least 2 and have three undefeated seasons.
I know that The Bear and the dominant “BAMA” teams of the 60&’70’s were built through political corruption and blatant disregard for whatever rules the NCAA had on the books, but didn’t enforce. They took advantage of the system and ushered in the modern era of the “football factory”. Hey, if they are proud of that, good for them.
What we have done in an INFINITELY more difficult environment is MUCH more impressive. Its the football equivalent of Rocky. The underdog who fights his way off the mat and a certain knockout in the early rounds, to go toe to toe and punch for punch with the establishment champ. We’ve had to work harder and overcome much bigger obstacles to compete with the state schools who have EVERYTHING in their favor. I am proud of that and will always be proud of that, no matter how many championships Bama wins. Good for you Bama…."Auburn is coming back! WARRRRREAGLE!!’
I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.

Rec'd for "six-finger salute"
Replying to second the idea that that’s how they are about their team, and how we are about ours. Look how happy a Chik-Fil-A Bowl win and a big ’stacheDC hire made us.
"The ball will be spotted at the six-inch-yardline."
The most frequent criticism of the Alabama fan base
that I have heard from the Auburn fan base is that we “live in the past.” I cut my teeth on Alabama football during the late ‘90s and early ’00s when we perennially had good-but-not-great teams. After winning 3 of 4 from 1998-2001, your Tigers went on a 6-game winning streak and the “live in the past” chorus was stuck on repeat. Alabama fans took great pride in our unmatched history during this time period, especially since we didn’t have much else upon which to hang our hats (scandals, probations, etc.).
We are in a new era. Since 2008, Alabama has three Iron Bowl victories and Auburn has one. Our seniors have achieved a 48-6 overall record (28-4 in the SEC) while the Auburn seniors have earned 35 wins to go with 17 losses (17-15 SEC). While both teams have won one Southeastern Conference championship in the last four years, Auburn has one national championship to Alabama’s two.
By any possible measure, our program is presently as good or better than your program, but now I see things like this:
Our program is every bit as good as theirs and HAS BEEN BETTER for the last 30 years.
Who is living in the past now?

Which past are you talking about. The recent or the historic
You can put any timeline on the past that you want and make it sound better. Bottom line is all time records and you guys are still ahead, but we are catching up. When we get more W’s than L’s against you what timeline are you going to use then? You had better think about that for a while, it’s going to be tough.
War Eagle.
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
I specifically referenced
the past 4 years since that is a measure of the recent past without too much subjectivity.
If the Auburn Tigers ever pull ahead in the series, I’ll probably still use the most recent four years to judge the rivalry. The earliest that could possibly happen, though, is the year 2019…
think about that for a while.

That's nice
You didn’t expect a ridiculously pro-Auburn slant on an Auburn site?
That’s kind of what we do. It’s a pasttime, like ’Bammers wailing and gnashing teeth about Auburn paying refs to win a game against Chattanooga. Or ’Bammers crying about officiating in any game they lose (LSU regular season game? had it in spades).
We make our own fun. Ours just happens to be optimism.
"The ball will be spotted at the six-inch-yardline."
Of course I expected that.
I read this site frequently, though, and have had many pleasant interactions with the authors, editors, and readers. With one notable exception, my input has been well-received and the discussion that follows has been positive. Hopefully that can continue.

Then why be so contrarian
about what was obviously meant to provide a positive context for things, given some of the recent issues?
Defensive much?
(And maybe you haven’t been as “pleasant” as you think, for that “one notable exception”)
"The ball will be spotted at the six-inch-yardline."
It wasn't my intent to be contrarian,
so I apologize for coming off that way. Col. Angus has proven to be someone who can take as well as he can dish and usually provides honest answers to honest questions.

My apologies
Given roster attrition, recruiting concerns, lack of an offensive coordinator, unproductive receivers, blowouts in our big games this year (Georgia, LSU, and Alabama)…I rather liked the drum-beating and sabre-rattling. It’s a nice complement to the constant concern.
(And I’m not such a bad guy, once you get to know me. So, I’m sorry for being a big meanie to you. Well, except for the one time…)

Just a quick new observation...
…After I wrote this, I came across the RBR Chic-Fil-A game thread. I couldn’t believe they even cared enough to have a whole THREAD about a minor bowl they weren’t even playing in—Oh, wait, I forgot, they have to have a platform to run down Auburn any chance they get—end of disbelief.
Well, the disbelief still remains regarding the anti-Auburn comments at the end of that thread. They were simply AMAZING. Instead of psyching up for their own Nat’l Champ chance, they all to a man (and I use that term loosely) wasted time—AND New Year’s Eve—ragging on their cross-state rival who they already pummelled that season.
As a control, I went over to the BCSCG thread on TET and advanced to the end. All I saw (in a limited number of posts) was congrats to the new Champs and pride that the State of Alabama three-peated. Even those who said they HATED Bama gave credit to their team. Gee wiz, what else do you need to show to show the difference. The blogs appear representative of, if not the whole fan base (obviously not), then at least those that are the most fanatical.
I guess I just wanted revenge on those who refused to grant me any measure of joy, not from their suffering, but from their respect for a rival. Now I see that respect and majority Bama fan is an oxymoron of the highest degree. I now realize that Option 1 will make anyone who selects that choice just like them. Although I refuse to volunteer kudos to the Dark Red Side, I won’t go out of my way nor take any opportunity to denigrate them.

New Offensive Coordinator
Looks like Loffler is a good one. Looks like the hated ones are in for a rough season next. Losing too many guys to the Pros. They should win about as many as we did after the exodus to the Pros that we enjoyed.
Bammer did not deserve to win their 8th NC. Bammer is a regurgitation of Texas.
