Gregg Knapp of Texans as OC??
Don't know how much credence to give these rumors....but the name getting bounced around the radio in Atlanta and the rumor-monger boards is that Greg Knapp, QB coach of the Texans is a leading candidate for the OC job.
What fits about the rumor is that Knapp is now available and he has a ton of NFL experience as a coordinator with the 49rs coaching Jeff Garcia, the Falcons coaching Mike Vick, the Raiders coaching (ugh!) JaMarcus Russell, the Seahawks with Hasselbeck and the last two years as QB coach with the Texans and Schaub.
Thats a mixed bag of nuts, in terms of results, but I do know that both Vick and Russell never made the commitment to excelling at the professional level. Vick admitted it and with Russell its pretty obvious he doesn't care about much of anything that doesn't come with a side of gravy.
I was never impressed with Knapp as OC in his time with the Falcons, but again you had the Vick factor in play there, which would be maddening to deal with; because of his talent and unwillingness to be coached in Knapps' system which was the West Coast offense.
Based upon his work with the Texans and the play of TJ Yates, I'm pretty impressed. We will definitely need someone that can mentor young QB's and he has plenty of experience. But with the quick read offense that the west coast offense is, I wouldn't expect a young QB to do well in it the 1st year. However, Jason Campbell did fine, so their is always hope.
Then again, the mere fact I know this probably means it definitely WON'T be Knapp.

I would be exceptionally, gloriously happy with this hire...

I am still hoping for Clements but Knapp would still be great
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?

Unfortunately..
The Buccaneers are trying to hire him as well…

If Clements was smart....
He would stay away from the dumpster fire that is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers…
I love them, but they’re in a bad way right now. They’re 3 years from being able to win with any consistency; and that’s with a good plan and support from the owners, which is unlikely.
Come to Auburn, win now.
Actually its Joe Philbin, the Packer OC, that is interviewing with Tampa Bay
and Miami. I don’t believe Clements is in the mix for those jobs.
I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.
At this point...
I just want a damn OC. This is a mistake on Chizik’s part this time. I realize he made the home run/grand slam hire with Van Gorder. The problem now is that this will badly damage offensive players recruiting. I know I know, I’m just the Negative Nancy of the bunch. Look, if you don’t think other schools aren’t using Auburn’s lack of an offensive coordinator to lure in some of the top uncommitted prospects away from Auburn, you don’t know much about competition in recruiting. The longer we go without an OC, the worse this hurts us.
Nobody has any question what kind of scheme Alabama is going to run. They will go with a majority Pro-Style set of plays. That’s a given. The problem that Auburn is facing is that nobody really knows if we’re going to stick with Malzahn’s offense, run a spread, or run a Pro-Style scheme. Note, all three of these are very different. So, the kids don’t know if Auburn is the most ideal situation for them until we name that offensive coordinator. Forget about building those important relationships, that chance has come and gone and left long ago. Come on Coach Chizik, bring in that top notch OC this week!!!!!
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
That would be AUsome...
You really think Auburn could lure him in?

I think it's pretty obvious our next OC is currently coaching in the NFL playoffs
Some recruit before last weekend’s games said that he was told by Chizik that we would know late in this week, but PMarsh said it may drag into next week. That makes me think that the coach was on a team that people thought would lose last weekend, but ended up winning. So that narrows it down to the Giants and the 49ers. I looked over both of their coaching rosters (as well as the Pats and Ravens, just to see), and Roman was the only one who made sense. He’s their OC, but only by title; Harbaugh calls the plays, and maybe Roman wants a chance to be the sole man in charge of an offense. Getting him would be about as big of a coup and surprise out of left field as getting VanGorder, so that’s why he’s my guess.

Sound reasoning..
That would actually be better than I had hoped for as an OC.

It also changes who I'd pull for in the playoffs this weekend...
Because I’m greedy like that. Where is my smiley face emoticon when I need it?

Thats as good a rationale as I've heard....
However I would be EXTEMELY surprised if we hired an OC from a successful playoff team…mainly because these guys are candidates for HC jobs. Roman was a finalist at Penn State and is a hot pick for the Indy job.
BVG was a huge surprise to me because of he took the same position at Auburn, although he does have a black mark on his resume for how he handled the Ga Southern gig. That may limit his HC prospects. I would be equally astonished if we could get a current NFL OC to accept a lateral move to Auburn. A QB or offensive position coach makes more sense. While I would like to get Clements from Green Bay, lets be honest, I could be the QB coach for Green Bay. Aaron Rodgers is going to make anybody in that position look good.
Now if you can get a 5th round rookie to come in and lead your team into the playoffs, like Knapp did with Yates…..color me impressed. What makes Knapp a believable get is that he has a ton of OC experience but is a QB coach…..and probably not making OC money. Taking the OC job at Auburn would get him back to making what he was making a couple of years ago. You can’t discount the wallet in these things.
I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.
Don't forget Matt Flynn throwing for around 500 yards in week 17
That whole offense just hums, and I agree that the personnel is the main reason (incredible receiving corps and O line)

Interesting, indeed
This would seem consistent with the Prosch transfer, right?
