Notes from The Georgia Dome
Had my War Eagle and TET moment with LSU Jonno Saturday as he messaged me in the afternoon about an extra ticket, so I met him and his crew down at the Georgia Dome for the Chick fil A bowl. Just imagine, I was planning on watching the game at home and rocking in the new year with Dick Clark's corpse on ABC. You have to give Jonno credit, sporting the Auburn shirt and LSU visor. I think he got more comments and high fives than would Cam Newton with a fistful of free tickets. I don't think there's any doubt who Auburn fans are pulling for next Monday. Anyway, a good time was had by all. That got me thinking, maybe this spring game we might try to have a TET meet-up like we last did in 2009. Might be fun for all to congregate, swap stories and at the very least, have some wagers settled in full.
Although the game was announced on Thursday as being another sell-out, attendance was a little over 72,000, which is about 4000 shy of capacity. I must hand it to Virginia fans as they came out in force. Naturally it was a little hard to tell visually looking around the stadium since everyone had on the same colors. You had to use your ears. A lot of Cavalier fans sported bow ties or powdered wigs, the latter a reference to Thomas Jefferson, the founder of UVa. Talking with a few of their fans before the game, they said they had last played in the Dome in 1998, against Georgia, and that it was just like a Bulldog home game. I told them to get used to it and that Saturday night would be no different.
I've been to the Chicken Bowl a few times when we weren't playing, so you'd figure I'd remember this little tidbit, but they serve alcohol in the stadium when it's not a regular SEC game. I mean, I guess that's the rule because I distinctly remember no sales during the SEC CG last year. The Georgia Dome area is a tough place to tailgate, with the CNN Center food court being about the only place with restaurants, and basically only two of those being places that serve drinks. The tailgaters per square foot ratio in there might be what you'd find in downtown Hong Kong, assuming they had college football there and tailgates, of course. Factor into the crowd the folks down there for the Zac Brown Band concert next door at Phillips Arena and it was wall to wall.
I was pleased the crowd was rocking going into the dome and inside it. With two Jumbotrons in the house, everyone gets to see what's going on. It was cool to see Bo Jackson down with the team on the sidelines before kickoff. He even went out with the captains for the coin toss. If I'm Virginia's coaches, I think I'd object. I wouldn't want my players being star struck like that. Regardless, it's good to see Bo being so visible with the team the last two years. We've caught him on the sidelines a few times over the years and more than a few just last year, but with his first return to the Heisman ceremony in 25 years for Cam's award, he definitely has a bigger presence with the program now than he's ever had. Thanks, Bo. (And shouldn't we have had him at least talk to Russell Wilson last year?)
Saturday was a perfect storm of greatness coming together for this team for one last hurrah. I'm very pleased to see the 2011 team go out as winners in their final game. I've been harsh on this team since Amen Corner and like some of you secretly did, I thought they were finished as a cohesive unit. I'm glad I was wrong. The new year is a time for redemption, and I was so happy for Barrett Trotter and his redemption in the eyes of his teammates, the coaches and the fans. I certainly hope he'll be back with us next year.
So the countdown for the new year has ended, Tiger fans. Everyone give a kiss to each other just as we kiss 2011 and a few players and coaches goodbye. Wish them the best on their future endeavors. While this particular squad of Tiger players rides off into the sunset, the Auburn program is still here. We've got coaches to hire and finicky 17 and 18-year old recruits to sign. Football is only over for about a month until national signing day. And only three and a half months until the spring game. We'll see you there!

Get in early
and stay there at Taco Mac. What a goat rodeo. Dantana’s was not nearly as crowded for standing room only.

I got on the jumbo tron.... !!!! And that has never happened before!
We were in a luxury suite through a friend of my brother. What an excellent time in Virginia’s endzone right behind the left upright and raising hell the entire game.
But you got to give it to Virginia’s fans. They were together…. and a lot of fun to watch. They were pretty good sports. And we did our best to respect our school as well. But getting to drink in a glass with ice?? Whew. It was tough going…. lol. Thank God for the food!
We didn’t dominate anyone but we did play well. I was very proud of Barrett Trotter and Onterio McCalleb. What a team players. And redemption is a great way of saying it.
And while I think a lot of Clint Mosely, I will be the first to admit 1/4 isn’t a way you are going to win a game. I doubt we would have won if he had stayed. No offense Clint.
All I can say is that Auburn did it’s part for the SEC. Not every team can say that can they Vandy or Georgia? Oh well… C’est la vie.
Any news on coordinators?? With the FSU game being over for days now… I am extremely surprised we haven’t heard anything on Mark Stoops. I guess that was just speculation of a few who wanted him to come??
The rumor I heard on Dyer is that Gene Chizik was going to meet with him and his family this week. The message I think will be: We want you at AU if you want to be here, but if you don’t, you need to go! And I can say with 100% certainty…. I second that thought!
AU has work to do. Right now it’s off season conditioning. And most importantly… for our coaching staff…. we need to get on with our recruiting. We still can finish in the top 5. AU needs to rock the football world and sign some kids that amaze!

Paging Todd92…
Alabama fans, ask yourself this question: Is this who you want representing your University and your fanbase?

Just going to leave this little nugget here for Todd92
Seems like this bet involved a fan post of the loser in the opposing team’s jersey (or colors at least) in addition to the liquor…

What a great New Years!
I bought a couple of club tickets for the game at an FCA fund raising event. I live in Brunswick, Ga so needless to say; I got a pretty good deal on them. The plan was to take our 3 kids and I would let this be my 11 year olds birthday present to go to the game with his mother. I cashed in a voucher I earned with Hilton to try and get a room close to the dome. The closest was outside of I-285, bummer. At the last minute, I happened across an available room at the Hilton downtown, wow. We arrived and had the experience of a lifetime… We walked in the lobby past the Auburn cheerleaders and had the thought, "huh, maybe the team is staying here…" The look on my kids face was priceless. The team was in fact staying there and my boys bout pee’d themselves in the lobby… We checked in looking around at everyone with some size to them wondering if they were on the team. I think my 9 year old asked for some errant autographs from big guys who were working at the hotel… We went to the parade and then I forked out my last bit of cash to get us all into the fan fest event where we stood in line for three hours so the boys could bounce on air inflated play grounds. My wife and daughter held our place for Tiger Walk which was held in the venue. The energy was amazing as the band played and our National Champs danced through the crowd. Bo even walked with the team and I was able to grab my childhood hero’s arm as he walked by. I reminded the kids that was the greatest athlete to ever walk the face of the earth… After the pep rally, we sent mom and son on their way. I kissed the wife, hugged the boy, handed them the pom-poms that we’ve had for 8+ seasons and told the boy, "Go get ‘em". Then the three of us headed to Mellow Mushroom to pick up a pie and then back to the hotel for kickoff. My 13 year old daughter was embarrassed as I tried to pick us up some cheap tickets on the way back to the hotel. "Need three real cheap!" I told the 9 year old it would help if he could drum up some tears… The game was awesome to watch! Hated it for Clint but was glad to see Barrett get the chance to lead the team again. We were bummed about Dyer but happy to see McCalebb step up and we even got a laugh at Gene’s reading glasses… The 9 year old drove us crazy jumping from bed to bed as though he was scoring the game winning touchdown. I called my wife after the game and told them to head back to the hotel and we would see what chance we might have to meet some of the players. Little did I know that we were about to have complete access to the team, their families and our coaching staff… We had a mini Tiger walk as they entered back into the hotel. We chanted "One more year!" for Barrett, expressed our gratitude to Gus and his family and would you believe it, we were offered another Bo sighting… My kids had a blast and we had the chance to interact with these athletes in a way we never thought possible. I told my kids as we were leaving the next morning and they were grabbing some last autographs, that this is the definition of ‘serendipitous’. I can’t tell you how great it is for me and my family "to be an Auburn Tiger!" WAR EAGLE!
Great story!!!

Glad that you got to go to the game, WEA! It was certainly a fun game to watch.
Anyone want to share the latest on the coordinator situation??

We have none
Seriously, I think we will hear something soon. With the season over for most and the NFL (if that’s where Gene is looking) into the playoffs the pool of candidates is more open.
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
I’m feeling oddly calm about not knowing. It’s like any doubt that he’s got it all under control was erased by his handling of the New Year’s Eve bowl game….Of course it’s only noon, so there’s plenty of time for a freak out….

Honestly,
this is the quietest I’ve ever seen any coaching search and that includes Auburn under Gene Chizik. We at least had some kind of idea going with the other searches. We knew names and people that were being talked to whether we knew the real chances of who was going to be hired or not. This mystery is one I must tip my hat to Chizik on as I’ve never seen something kept this secret in the realm of college football.
I am beginning to be concerned that the reason there is so much secrecy in the search is that Coach Chizik really hasn’t done anything about it yet. I hope that’s not the case. It’s been way too long for him not to have an idea of who he is going after by now. Recruits also would like to know who their coordinators are going to be so that they can know if Auburn is the best place for their college career. I sincerely hope he has begun the search already. I’m starting to think he feels like it’s Auburn and there is no rush. I hope that is not his attitude. Oh well, I’m probably way too nervous right now and Chizik will have two home run hires on both sides of the ball.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
I don't think this is true...
I think AU has done plenty. And if I had my guess… he is waiting to introduce both (if possible) at the same time.
Don’t fret Sparkey…. after watching Chizik work his ASS off on new year’s eve… I think AU will be sitting pretty come the hiring of our new coordinators.
WDE
Good to see that some things never change...
Sparkey, please don’t ever change.
Chizik doesn’t air his business, whether it concerns athletes, or coaches, until the final decision has been made. It’s the preferred way to do business in my opinion, and I like that he isn’t buddy-buddy with the media too.

Well I'm tryin...
But PM is also saying the process to get the coaches just now started. If that is true, I do not agree with waiting that long as I think that’s a mistake.

Interview Question
When Gene intreviews the new OC, I hope one of the questions will be, "Do you have the guts to go down to Tuscaloser and flip Yeldon back?
Meet up for A-Day?
……I’ll show. I know y’all are getting tired of recycled A-Day pix!

For a comment that first made my guts curl up in fear…before getting the requisite chuckle.
It’s too early to read that.
"The ball will be spotted at the six-inch-yardline."
Amusing crack by WEA, but...
….Chris Todd was toting a clipboard after shoulder surgery that spring. Won the QB job in 11 days of fall camp. No, we watched Kodi and Caudle duke it out, that spring. I left the game profoundly depressed about our offensive prospects…
......Drowning in cool elixir.
True
Hadn’t remembered Todd’s surgery. I do recall the three-way race, and Burns being the fan favorite.

What about Michael Flint (OL, Oxford)?
he decommitted but hasn’t endorsed anyone else
by Triumphant Tiger on Jan 3, 2012 11:22 PM CST reply actions
Mr. Flint is a three star, and has taken Auburn completely off of his list of potential schools..
There apparently is a difference of opinions between Flint and coach Grimes, or some very distinct reason he completely moved away from Auburn.
