Friday Ramblings - A Look Ahead
I am not in the prognostication business, and actually have been way off base more than I care to think about when it comes to making predictions. I still would rather look ahead with a positive mindset, than to think I have nothing to look forward to. Just how does all this drivel relate to Auburn football? Let's take a look inside the future according to KoolBell, shall we?
SEC, strength in numbers....
There are numerous schools next season in the SEC that will field strong teams. Added to that mix will be Texas A&M and Missouri. These two schools should give the SEC 6 or 7 of the top 25 in preseason polls. That's a full 25% of the polls with our conference members as the best of the rest.
The Big 12 has 5, the Big 10 and the ACC has 4 each, the PAC 12 has 3, the Big East has 1, if WVU is still a Big East member, then make it 2.
According to The Sporting News in their "Way too early Top 25" poll, Auburn comes in at a paltry number 23 ranking. Not saying that isn't justified from last seasons results. The uphill climb begins on the first day of the college football season for Auburn, when they face Clemson.
Win, wash, rinse, repeat....
Earlier this week, The Randolph Leader of Roanoke, and Randolph County, Alabama posted an interesting look at the potential of the SEC making a 7th consecutive run at the National Championship title.
The SEC, however, has a good chance to make it seven in a row, although if there is any way to prevent it the national media will bend over backwards to stop it. It would have to be a situation like it was this year where two SEC teams were clearly the two best in the nation.
We saw this coming. Anybody that hasn't seen the media building up the "SEC Envy", let me brace you for the impact. The timing is ripe for another 2004 type catastrophe to befall the SEC, and quite possibly Auburn. Ironic, I know, although consider where Auburn will most likely start the preseason polls, and then imagine three or more teams going undefeated throughout the regular season, and add to that the impending buildup of the aforementioned envy, and there you have it.
Looking to next season....
It is this writers opinion that next year we will see a much different, yet much improved product on the football field. An awful lot of familiar faces will be learning new concepts, and new plays. A much needed changing of the guard has taken place, or at least is in the process of taking place. A new defensive coordinator has already been tabbed to reinstate the tradition of stingy, tough defensive play on The Plains. A new offensive coordinator is expected to be announced shortly. (No, I'm not telling you who, because I don't know. OK?)
What is most important is that Auburn will return virtually all of it's play makers from 2011, including it's star wide out, Emory Blake.
It's time that those two consecutive highly rated groups of offensive line recruits, start playing up to their potential. If that happens, then the sky will be the limit. If Auburn has another injury filled year like 2011, then all bets are off, on any real success.
National Champion, once again....
For the 7th time in the history of Mascot Cheerleader competition, Auburn University's own loveable "Aubie" has been crowned National Champion.
Track Em Tigers would like to congratulate Aubie, and the entire Auburn University Cheerleader squad. War Eagle, and a job well done. Let's do it again, shall we?
Comment of the week....
I almost went with the most rec'd comment I have seen here at TET, except that it actually was a lighthearted jab at someone. That someone actually got my selection for comment of the week. This weeks winner is Sparkey, for this gem...
I've never seen...
a player that creates more controversy than Tim Tebow, yet he doesn’t do anything that really brings it on personally. He is a good man and lives his life the right way. I don’t know why so many have so much venom against him. He’s never done anything to them. He doesn’t say bad things about anybody. I’ll never understand how people can hate Tim Tebow like they do and they are so loud about it. I don’t think they would hate him if they knew the guy. Right now, there are more people that hate Tim Tebow than hate Michael Vick. For that matter, you didn’t hear the huge screams when Rae Carruth murdered his girlfriend. Ugh, the hatred of Tim Tebow is a microcosm of what’s wrong with America. They hate him so much. I don’t think it’s necessarily because of his faith. I think they hate him because he’s so clean without any scandal and he continues to succeed. The fact is, America doesn’t like to see people succeed without any mud on them. That’s exactly what Tim Tebow is doing and they hate him for it.
It's a subject we have talked about, so no need to rehash all of that here, and now. Still, it strikes at the very core of the differences we all have with this subject. Our personal beliefs. Well done Sparkey.

My feeling on the OC situation is that if Clements was going to be our OC, then it would have been finalized and announced earlier this week. So our new OC is most likely still in the mix in the playoffs….at least I hope so.

I think you're right..
Did I just say that?
I almost put that thought into this weeks “FR”. Looking at the BVG hire, He was named two days after the Falcons were bumped from the playoffs, so the logical thinking is we are waiting for someone who is still coaching in the NFL.

Well, I kept waiting and next thing you know it’s Friday…I think all the beat writers are starting to get frazzled, you hardly see any news out of them…It’s like everyone is on lock down until this decision is made.

That goes along with a great conversation on twitter this am....
Even ESPN’s Tom Lugenbill weighed in on the subject on twitter. Chizik has kept this very close to the vest, like he does everything else, and very few people know who he wants, or who he has talked to. Everyone else is guessing, just like I am.
It also proves beyond a shadow of doubt. Jay Jacobs, and Gene Chizik have 100% control of this coaching search. No outside interference. That is the biggest positive to this whole thing, in my opinion.

It’s huge! It shows a lot of stability during a time of change. I also get a sense that not having an OC is freaking us out more than the players (and even potential recruits for that matter)…
Glad that I’ve sworn off the twitterz during my hectic schedule…I don’t think that I could handle all the speculation. That said, I can’t give up TET no matter how busy I get. The only time that you don’t see me is when I’m deathly sick (end of last week) or out of town…..

My $ are on the 49ers guy
Even though he is the OC for San Fran, Harbaugh still calls the plays. He might want to have a greater hand running an offense.
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
That being said I am pulling for the Giants
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
I fully understand...
As a lifelong Redskins fan, I hate that I am forced into a situation that I have to pull for the New York Giants….sigh.

Plus, AU is represented quite well in Giant land. Got to pull for the home boys
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
Trooper Taylor... is he OC material?...
the AU program has enjoyed a nice continuity & balance within the staff… at least this group has projected themselves in relative harmony for the most part…save the D side.
I just wonder if Trooper Taylor or Curtis Luper are of the personality & skill to evolve within the Au staff as a lead play caller.
thoughts?
I do like that Auburn has tied itself (thru BVG) to the NFL more direct… but somehow it makes me nervous to turn this staff upside down and bring in yet another NFL guy for OC.
you do it and you wipe it up.
I don't think it's a matter of Luper or Trooper being able to do the job of OC...
Trooper is the assistant head coach. He is literally in charge when Chizik is out of town. Plus the two of them are among the elite of recruiters in the country, and Auburn needs them in that capacity more than any other, in my opinion.
I do believe that Luper could do that job well. It’s anybody’s guess as to why they aren’t chosen.

go with Luper as OC. get Auburn back to running the ball down people's throats.
keep Taylor where he is… as a recruiting maniac and important personality in the group.
something jsut doesn’t feel right about bringing in another NFL guy…
you do it and you wipe it up.
Luper is as good a recruiter as Trooper. He needs to stay where he is also
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
so... a good recruiter shouldn't ever get promoted to a coordinator position?
i agree that we had trouble with the QBs last year and could use a QB focused position coach to focus on that issue… but my point is that the balance of the “family” of coaches could be comprimised if we get another NFL guy in AU as OC.
There are such things as position coaches… not every OC has to be an expert with QBs.
you do it and you wipe it up.
I did not say he doesn't deserve a promotion, just that we need him most in his current position
Chizik may have talked to him but I think he believes Luper not to be OC material.
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
I don't but if he did don't you think he would have said so by now.
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
The problem is...
If we don’t promote one of them, they will leave eventually. They have ambition like everybody else. I honestly think Luper should’ve been promoted to the OC position. We could’ve brought in Dameyune Craig as our qb coach and bam! You have the best recruiters in the country in Auburn and we’re going to bring in top three classes at least every year. Anybody else starting to realize how important Tracey Rocker was our defensive linemen recruiter? Nothing against Pelton, but he hasn’t exactly closed the deal with our biggest defensive linemen targets just yet. Lastly, is it just me or is Thigpen not as involved this time around as he has been in the past?
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
exactly...that is why i posted what i did 4 messages above...
Luper should have been named OC… and i love the idea of getting Dameyune Craig as QB coach.
I really did think Malzahn was a good QB coach at Auburn, but nothing could overcome the inconsistency in the 3 QBs last year.
I absolutely do not agree with the idea that this AU OC hire should be primarily focused on QB development.
you do it and you wipe it up.
We are in 100% agreement Buddy Ro
I really think we’re going the wrong way about this whole thing. We had a great potential OC right there in front of us. Luper has earned a shot in my mind. He’s worked his butt off for Auburn.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Just a guess, of course....
I think Chizik may be looking for a true QB developer. We have three high quality QB’s Moseley, Frazier, and Pike that really need someone with a quality resume to coach them up to NFL material.
If we were having trouble developing RB’s (shudder) then Luper would be the right choice.
That is all my reasoning on this, and pure conjecture, but it makes sense to my pea brain.

That reasoning really points to Clement
But I think if he was the target, we would already have him on board.

A guy on ESPN radio just said this...
If you have 16 3rd downs and convert only 4 of them. It not only means you are bad on 3rd down, but first and secnd downs too.
He wasn’t talking about Auburn, but he sure described this past season Auburn had without realizing it.

WRs don't matter a whole lot with questions at QB...
…but look at how poorly Auburn’s offense performed without Blake this year. Especially without Dyer, a field-balancing WR would opn things up a lot for the rest of Auburn’s offense.

i follow, ... on the other hand.
maybe we just need them to throw a good 10 to 5 yard pass and hand the ball off clean. all depends on where we’re headed. this is definitely a cross roads for the Auburn program. it is beginning to feel like we’re working to redefine our personality on both sides of the ball… just a short year removed from winning a National Championship. wow.
something we have benefit from in the past few years is a distinct personality on offense; something different, and maybe more importantly,…an alternative to …bama.
i don’t expect bama’s concept to change even though their coordinators are gone…. do you?
… and yet it seems that Auburn is headed toward a shift in personality. the most important thing for me is that AU retains a distinctive personality.
you do it and you wipe it up.
Cam Newton aside...
Auburn had a real hard time with QB’s this season. With the perceived lack of improvement in Moseley, and Frazier, maybe Chizik is thinking he needs that QB coach in Auburn.
My thinking is two of our loses were because of a lack of leadership at the QB position. Clemson and Bama could have been won with better play by our QB’s, IMHO

We need the linemen...badly...
Look, I’ve said enough about how I feel about the lack of an OC. More than any of these skill players, we need the big sexies in the trenches. Watson is somebody we really need to close the deal with along with Goldman. I’m sincerely hoping we out fight FSU for the services of Eddie Goldman. We need that kid badly. We need the big folks in the trenches something fierce. We almost did the unthinkable of the class and brought in both of the Armstead brothers. Thank Houston Nutt for screwing that up causing a new SEC rule to be established that is screwing a kid that could really use the ability to play one last year moving away from a team that is on probation. Thanks Slive and Nutt, we appreciate that for our orange and blue hearts.

we sure do need lineman. another solid line recruit season and we'll get some badly needed depth.
not unlike 2011, we’re headed toward a year where the underclassmen will be sincerely needed to fill out the depth chart.
you do it and you wipe it up.
Thanks for the great article.
My only disagreement is with your implied high expectations for Auburn next year. The SEC will be tougher than ever (as you said). Auburn will start an unproven QB behind an o-line of mostly underclassman. Not to mention a rebuilding defense. Sorry to be so pessimistic, but I don’t see AU competing for the SEC West until at least 2013. Sure hope that I’m wrong though…
- Its hard to see another recruit de-commit. Auburn has lost more commitments than it has gained since the coordinators left and thats no coincidence. I know Chiz and co. are hard at work recruiting, but you can’t expect wavering recruits to commit (or stay committed) with such uncertainty. At this point, I just hope they sign an OC before signing day. I know making the right hire is crucial, but maintaining an image of certainty and direction are equally as important. Its easy to forget that the next OC will likely only be around for three years at best.
WDE!
Thank you for the kind words...
My suggestion that Auburn could have a great year, was more a demonstration that another 2004 type mistake could be possible.
It was not a prediction of win/loss record or anything of that nature. I stand by the statement that I expect Auburn to be much improved. I was actually trying to save the why, and how, for another post, so I won’t give away any surprises for now.

…..rejected a 13-year plea-deal. Probably a mistake. One of the reasons Lee County is one of the safest counties in Alabama is that prosecutors, judges and juries there DO NOT PLAY AROUND!
…..Unless Updyke’s lawyer gets a change of venue, he’s probably going down for the full 42 years.
…..And seriously, folks. What sort of fanbase stands around and applauds a sexual assault on an unconscious person? How does a 32 year old guy with a child break the news to his wife that he went on his big game trip, and is now going to have to face jail time and the permanent “sexual offender” leper label? It boggles the mind…
......Drowning in cool elixir.
Not to mention the financial straights the teabagger just strapped his family with-in both lawyer fees and the fact that he got fired from his job. What an idiot. It’s one thing to joke about doing something like that (still gross and unacceptable), but how it gets to actually doing it, in public, with cell phones everywhere defies logic…I don’t care how much a person has had to drink!

There has been some debate as to whether he is a UAT grad.
If he is, it boggles the mind even more. Not only did he disgrace them more it is a pretty sad commentary that a degree UAT qualifies you to work in a sporting goods store.
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
Lost Recruits
It is sad to see after a undefeated NC year just a year ago that we have only 15 recruits. That is the lowest number in the S.E.C If ever there was a year where we should not have lost so much momentum it is this year. Losing recruits like Yeldon and Ricardo have a huge negative effect that becomes contageous. I hate to think who else is going to deflect before signing day. A lot of our other four stars are going to other schools for recruting visits. They seem less than sold on Auburn!Call me negative but I am realistic. Our program is going no where fast at this pace.
I do think the indecision at OC has a ripple to it... But still expect us to finish strong.
you do it and you wipe it up.
Hoping you are right
I sure hope that things do change between now and signing day! We have so may needs that we have got to have at least a top ten recruting year are we will pay down the road!
