"We're Getting Closer" - Tony Barbee
It was Lettermen's Day at the Auburn Arena today with former Tigers in attendance to watch Auburn come from behind to defeat the South Carolina Gamecocks 63-52.
All-Americans John Mengelt, Lee DeFore, and Charles Barkley were all on hand to witness the Tigers play old style defense stifling South Carolina to 40% from the field and holding the Gamecocks to 6-of-18 from the 3-point range.
Auburn won their 12th victory this season (one game better than the entire win total from 2011).The Tigers trailed 28-24 at half time but came back to take a 55-38 lead with four and a half minutes to play. They did it with a determined defense that forced 23 Gamecock turnovers including leading with a 14-0 advantage in points off turnovers at one time during the second half.
Frankie Sullivan continued his hot hand playing great ball and led the Tigers with 22 points He has averaged 20 points per game in the last three games. Kenny Gabriel added 16 points, with seven rebounds and four blocks. Varez Ward only had eight points but he had three rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block shot.
Sullivan said it was "Defense. Team defense. Everyone was in tune. I think that the players are coming around and see what Coach wants. He wants hard defense. That's what he wants every night, and I think we're showing that for him. It's showing on the scoreboard."
Barbee commented, " We are what we are, but if we will defend and guard and scrap and hustle with that sense of urgency, you're going to give yourself a chance in every single game. We're getting closer. "

What's great...
…is HOW they did it. I love the press descriptions of defensive ferocity!
…..I wanted to watch this game, but an early morning lightning strike on our house precluded that. I fixed the broken window panes, but there’s damage to cinder blocks and a wood window frame. And we’re still finding electrical stuff that doesn’t work. Latest casualty is the dishwasher. Heating elements and the disposal part still run, but the pumps don’t.
…..Folks, this is way off the subject, but here’s a plug for those APC battery backup units. I lost one big unit in the strike, but nothing plugged into that unit, or other ones has failed, yet. If you’re going to buy a big-ticket TV, home theater, computer or the like, it’s a pretty cheap insurance policy!
…..Biggest thing is no one was hurt, and the house didn’t catch fire. We’re counting our blessings. I guess an ancient cinder block house with asbestos siding does have some safety features after all, eh?
......Drowning in cool elixir.
Hope Tigers have turned the corner on playing defense.
Dare I dream of post season play?
Glad the Reign family / home is OK. AND glad to know the PC is still working too.

Holy Cow!
Glad that you guys are OK! I saw that the Tragic City was having nasty weather, but I had no idea how bad. Sorry you’re having to go through this…but really happy that you’re just picking up the pieces of household stuff vs loved ones. I’ve seen lightening strikes start forest fires and light houses on fire. Scary stuff. The Power of Nature, people, it’s no joke!

We'll see if I can do this right...

……Three panes of glass blown out right above my head where I was sitting, and you can see that the big stone above the window was moved, too. Don’t think I’ve ever heard anything as loud!

Wow! That's impressive!
You are so lucky that you weren’t hurt!!! Those old big stones are heavy too…makes you really appreciate the force behind those lightening strikes.. It doesn’t look like the roof was damaged too badly…..so there’s a positive.

Was really happy to see this win run across the ESPN ticker. Seems like Barbee is getting this
ragtag team in line and is heading in the right direction.

Second Half
Great energy in the second half yesterday. I see some potential with this team over the next few months and next year. We need a dependable “big man” though that can grind out points in the paint and prevent the other team from getting second chance rebounds on the other end.
