Scot Loeffler Named Offensive Coordinator

A short while ago, Auburn coach Gene Chizik tapped Temple offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler to run Auburn's offense. Prior to this year, he served two seasons as Florida's quarterbacks coach. In 2009, while coaching Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, the Gator offense led the nation in pass efficiency.

Loeffler, 37, played quarterback at Michigan from 1993-96, and was the Wolverines' quarterback coach from 2002-2007. He was Central Michigan's quarterbacks' coach from 2000-01. He also spent a season on the staff of the Detroit Lions.

"Scot is a rising star who has worked with some very good quarterbacks, and has achieved a tremendous amount of success," Gene Chizik said in a statement.

"He is a tireless worker, is an outstanding recruiter and knows the rigors of competing in this conference. We're very excited to have Scot join our staff and we welcome him to the Auburn family."

Type of offense

What kind of system will we see this fall? One similar to Malzahn’s? More pro-set? I’m not too familiar with what Temple ran this past year. Seems like UF’s style was similar to what Malzahn ran (a spread type) when he was at UF. Curious to see the changes!

Here is some stuff from Temple U...
Loeffler spent the last two seasons at the University of Florida as the quarterbacks coach. He led a Florida quarterback unit that led the nation in pass efficiency (167.3) in 2009. They passed for 3,305 yards for 28 touchdowns with just five interceptions. Florida ranked second in the SEC in passing offense with an average of 236.1 yards per game. Loeffler guided Tim Tebow in his final season at Florida, during which he passed for 2,895 yards and 21 touchdowns, finishing his senior year with a passing efficiency of 164.17. The quarterback left Florida with five NCAA, 14 SEC and 28 UF records.

Loeffler’s Temple offense ran 76.3 percent of the time last year. While 116th in pass offense, was 33rd in efficiency (11 TD, 4 INT).

Thanks for the info.

KoolBell777, What’s your take on the hire? I’m curious as to why the hire took so long? I trust the coaches and their plan (for now). LOL! IMHO, if the OL play doesn’t improve by leaps and bounds, then it won’t matter.

If i have said it once, I've said it a tousand time...

Every pro style play and theory can be run from a spread, but not vise versa.

Loeffler will run plenty of shotgun as well as under center. Go watch YouTube highlights of Temple. He can mix it up.

The sense I am getting is this...

Loeffler is a much respected genius, or guru who was waiting to see if any quality NFL jobs were to open. No concrete evidence, just my gut.

from Jay G tate over at HABOTN (Montgomery advertiser guy)

Temple observer tells me Loeffler would run pro style if given a choice; didn’t have one at Temple.

Blank (insert your word of choice) Satan! See string above, almost made this chaplain cuss...

We do not need his opinion or what he was doing for approval. Chizik has done a great job with staff selections and he has made another one today! Welcome Scot!! We are Auburn and we are winners and we don’t care what bama or saban has to say. We will be fine fine, no not fine, Great!!! War Eagle!

Sorry man just sick of hearing how wonderful saban is and how far ahead he is of everyone.

Yes he has one a few games and gets his guys to play, he gets great talent because he coaches at great places and over signs, or pulls scollies, etc. do not like his lack of character. Always had a bad feeling about him, when he was at Mich st, LSU, and still feel something is not right with him. If do my math right Chizik got his 1st NC before saban did age wise. I think saban actually has a losing record against AU over the years. Auburn is a special school with special people, and I believe great days are ahead.

and don't forget the Red Elephant Club

“money is no object” … why were they so eager to retrieve Brent Callaway last year?

Who financed Jerrell Harris’s state-of-the-art laptop?

And now they’re planning a house call to the Armsteads after we’ve made 5 of ’em

I have nothing good to say about this...

I will just keep my mouth shut and see how this offense looks by the season beginning. I don’t have words right now to accurately express how I feel. War Eagle everybody…and good Luck to Loeffler. Again, I have no way to really say how I feel about this hire tonight. I’m flat out speechless. Rarely do I have no words, but I have no words this time.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

Chin up, dude!

It will feel better once our O-line bulks up. We have a new shiny fullback. We have tons of leadership coming back. And now we have a guy in Loeffler that has proven time and again that he can coach a quarterback…well. I know that he’s not the Big Sexy that you were looking for. But you never know, that 6 might turn into a 10 after all. Let’s see if he can pull in some top recruits in this last week and a half….he might surprise all of us!

Anyone that's followed this saga should not be surprised.

Scott Loeffler’s name has been on just about every one’s short list of possibilities since early on – Marshall, Rivals, al.com, you name it. He’ll do a great job.

Why did it take so long? We will never know. But I suspect Chizik had someone he was wooing but they could not reach an agreement. At any case, Loeffler is an up and coming coach and a quality hire.

War Eagle Coach and welcome to the family!

Was not directing that necessarily at you Sparkey.

Just saying Loeffler’s name has been out there and those of us (like myself) who started thinking it was going to be an NFL guy should not be surprised. I like the fact that he has been a mentoring coach to Tom Brady in the off season and has sent 6 QB’s to the pro’s.

The rep on him is he’s a good recruiter as well. So now we need him to hit the road 24/7 till feb 1st to get some talent in the barn.

Well for those of us wishing for a QB guru, we got our man!

There is a lot of positives out there about this guy. Nothing good can come from running down the rabbit hole of ‘why did it take so long’….He sounds like a quality coach. I’m hoping that he will solidly develop a quarterback and give this offense some play calling flexibility. My hope is that Loeffler keeps the offensive staff largely intact…but we can’t fault him for wanting to bring his own guys in………

War Eagle and Welcome!!!!

I'm going to pretend

… for my own sanity that he was our 1st and only choice, he was just such a hot commodity and wanted by so many he did what was best and laid every offer out and choose us as the best.

Before you go running for the Vodka and Oxycotin cocktail.....

take a read of this article on Loeffler.
http://annarbor.com/sports/um-football/ex-michigan-qb-coach-scot-loeffler-now-at-temple-i-love-the-college-game/

Is he going to be the next Bill Walsh? Who knows? But he is very well respected and exhibits all the character traits that I can see would make him very attractive to CGZ and potential NFL employers.
Whether he was Chiziks first choice or not, I think what we need is someone that has can coach up talent and be an innovative play caller, and I think he shows a passion for the game that will serve to deliver to Auburn what we need.
I’ve alwasys said I’d prefer to hire a guy on the way up and pay him for what he does instead of hiring a guy based on reputation and paying him for what he did. An NFL hire would have been more glamorous, but those guys may cost on what they have already accomplished…..Loefler looks like a guy who wants to make his mark on the SEC and will do what he has to do to accomplish it.

I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.
