Another Strong Hire By Chizik
He's buddies with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. He was born in Barberton, Ohio, home of legendary Michigan coach Bo Schembechler. If lineage is an indicator of success, then Auburn has found its man in Scot Loeffler.
The man hired to run Auburn's offense will not get the headlines that new defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder got a few weeks back, but the choice by Gene Chizik may be every bit as brilliant.
Former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr is certain Auburn found the right man.
"I'm delighted for Scot and think that he is a great fit for Auburn," Carr said. "He's a bright guy that has a great passion for the game. Not only is he an outstanding coach, but a great recruiter. He's a great teacher, and there's not a quarterback out there that wouldn't enjoy playing for him."
This off-season Loeffler's name has been mentioned with almost every vacant offensive coordinator position in America. A few weeks back he was linked to Nick Saban and the opening at Alabama. Loeffler is so valued by Brady that he continues to work with the Super Bowl quarterback every off-season on mechanics.
There are two questions being asked today: What kind of offense will Loeffler run and what took Chizik so long to pull the trigger on the Temple offensive coordinator?
There's no easy answer to the first question. Last season at Temple, his offense ran the ball more than 70 percent of the time. What's not clear is whether that was by design or necessity.
What we do know is that he moved the Owl offense from 82nd nationally in points scored to 39th in one season. Temple went from being ranked 77th in rushing to 7th in 2011. His offense ranked 33rd in pass efficiency and 63rd in total offense. The bad news: Temple ranked 116th in passing.
Conventional wisdom says Auburn will run more of a hybrid offense, with a lean toward more of a pro-style attack. Chizik may have tipped his hand with the signing of Illinois fullback transfer Jay Prosch.
We may never know what took Chizik so long to come to a decision. One thing is certain; the wait has had an effect on this year's recruiting class.
Sources say four-star wide receiver Ricardo Louis decommitted from Auburn on Wednesday after Chizik couldn't give him a definitive answer on who he was hiring. Florida State used the vacancy to its advantage, swaying the Miami prep star to commit to the Seminoles.
Chizik is known to be a thorough evaluator, whether recruiting players or coaches. Something tells me he's completely comfortable with the timeline on this hire. Loeffler looks to be worth the wait.
Sources say that in the end, it came down to four candidates: Loeffler; Baylor co-offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery; Rutgers offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti; and Jacksonville head coach Kerwin Bell.
With National Signing Day a little more than a week away, 247 Sports.com has Auburn's class ranked 20th nationally.
The top five teams in the 247 Sports.com recruiting rankings look like this: (1) Alabama (2) Texas (3) Ohio State (4) Florida State (5) Michigan.
The top five teams in the SEC look this way: (1) Alabama (2) Florida (3) Georgia (4) Texas A&M (5) LSU.
Loeffler is expected to hit the ground running today.

He ran it so much because Bernard Piece is nasty
You can see that he’s a highly regarded prospect. I think that it is important to see that the new coordinator completely revamped an offense to emphasize his best player. I can say that this is a great hire.
Read elsewhere that he's extremely versatile in what he'll run.
He’ll run what best fits the personnel, and what best fits the situation in the game. He’s a multiple guy. They ran it so much at Temple because they had a fantastic RB and could hardly settle on a decent QB until late in the season. But he’s a QB guru, so you know he loves to throw the ball, too. Should be a really interesting time seeing what he does next year. I’ll be looking forward to A-Day, as well.

This is a good and necessary hire. We have needed help at the QB position for some time now. We get a guy who not only thinks about and addresses “plays,” but also the practical nuts and bolts of “how to play” quarterback.
It was distressing to see both Trotter and Moseley wither under pressure when the O line broke down. They just curled up and took the loss without a hope of scrambling or attempting to run out of trouble. Timing issues as well as lack of quick check downs, scrambling, and stiff arming opponents were evident.
This is from the official AU website...
Lloyd Carr, former Michigan Head Coach (1995-2007) on Loeffler
“I’m delighted for Scot and think that he is a great fit for Auburn. He’s a bright guy that has a great passion for the game. Not only is he an outstanding coach, but a great recruiter. He’s a great teacher and there’s not a quarterback out there that wouldn’t enjoy playing for him.
Scot is a team guy, one of those coaches who will call a game with the mindset of doing whatever it takes to win. Some days it may be to protect the defense and some days to light it up. He will call his offense that will give the team its best chance to win.
His strength is that he is honest and up front with players and they will respect him because he has a wonderful knowledge of the game.
There will be a lot of happy fans at Auburn with this hire and a lot of new Auburn fans in the Midwest."
Very high praise from his former boss.

Is this the right hire?
You can bet your sweet bippy it is.
Loeffler is a well respected quarterbacks coach.Don’t waste your time looking at the numbers with Temple. While he did show some remarkable improvement there, all you will get is the “5 and 19” club started again.
I would not be surprised to see Tom Brady in Auburn in the next couple of seasons, working on his mechanics with Loeffler, since they are such great buddies.

And how big a QB recruiting tool is that?
Every QB he’s ever coached (barring the ones from Temple, possibly) have gone on to play in the NFL. That’s a pretty dang good track record.

Is it a home run hire??
Could be…..might be that line drive, bend it around the foul pole type.
I personally like what I see from his resume and the fact that he is willing to pound the ball if that is what works for you. I like that he doesn’t appear to be a “system” guy. He’s into mechanics, devouring tape and breaking down and opponents weakeness’ and attacking them with your strength. The fact that he’s a film room junkie really makes me feel comfortable with the hire…..he’s here to attack. I don’t care if the staple is a double reverse flea flicker or a fullback dive as long as thats the right play for the situation.
Sometimes I think that simple idea gets lost in gameplanning.
Did the delay hurt recruiting? Absolutely, but now it has a chance to help. Loeffler has a good story to tell to recruits and if he makes the right 1st impression that may be all he needs. The uncertainty is over for the recruits…they’ll get to hear what his plans are for the offense well ahead of us. So how he closes will reallly show us how good of a recruiter he is. I’m not expecting miracles, but Its his week to shine, so hopefully he will make the most of it.

Although he did say the UofA instead of AU, he is an intense, and meticulous person. He definitely has connections in high places, and Chizik took his time, regardless to what the media or fans wanted.
Time will tell if this a great hire, but our QB’s should be much improved next season, and by the second season, they should be great.
I believe that Chizik was looking for a commitment from whomever he hired, like at least three years. That is just my opinion.

There is no such thing as a long term commit in college football.
All you can do is hope that the guy is successful and hope he likes what he is doing, who he is working with, and how much he is getting paid. If he’s good enough he’s going to get hired away, you just have to hope you can find someone as good or better to replace him.

Gotta say I like how that was addressed....
Chiz seems to get that its not about having a system but running the right plays at the right time. If the situation opponent dictates a spread attack….that what you do. If if dictates you attack with a pro-set/power I….thats what you do.
THAT IS SO REFRESHING TO HEAR!! I’m tired of hearing…“This is what we’re going to do and we’re going to make our opponents react to that!!” - Becasue your opponents do react and too often we haven’t been able to "react back’.
Hopefully Loeffler will run the “SL90X” – the Scott Loeffler 90 day Xtreme Offense!! A 12 week attack on the SEC specializing in defense confusion and championship building.

My question is why we went to the spread in the first place...
i mean… I was for it back at the end of 2007 because it was a change from the 3 yards and a cloud of dust routine that was Auburn football. But nobody could have known that Tubs was going to underwhelm the problem and solution and bring us to the brink of disaster that he did in 2008.
Now that we are going back to something more traditional… I wonder why Chizik didn’t do that to begin with… I am guessing the answer to that was that he inherited the mess he got from Tubs… and the fact he wanted to demonstrate it would work (so well we won a NC with it). Add to the fact his OC he hired was a specialist at it.
For any one wanting a quantifiable difference between Gene and Tommy it’s this: it’s both talking the talk and walking the walk. Tommy boy could only do the first part… it just sometimes bit him in the tail because he couldn’t pull of the second on a regular basis.
I like Chizik. I always have… I just think that he sometimes over thinks the obstacle that is facing him. If that means slow…. I guess it means slow. As long as we are the best we can be… who could argue that?
WDE
i disagree 100% with that.
Yes CTT got very slack in recruiting but going to franklin was not a Tubs error. The error was his loyalty to the position coaches. Franklins system has worked at other schools(not saying he is great or anything) but if given the chance to bring his postion coaches he may very well have won. The best coach in the world cannot work if he fights with his assistance. Everyone knows I’m a HUGE spread guy but if you look at Malzahn, he ran pro plays. Power-O, counter, ect.. like I said in another thread(sp?) I’m worried about CSL sayin he wanted to protect the D. That means we run boring, predictable O like alabama, lsu, and 99% of the big 10. I’m ok with multiple sets both under center and from the gun as long as we attack, attack, attack and keep the pedal to the metal, mix it up and keep everyone on their hills. No ball control unless we absolutly have to. I want my Offence like Cobra Kai, strike hard, strike fast, no mercy.

So what your saying is that Tubs didn't close the deal??
Or didn’t walk the walk he was so busy talking??
Funny… I thought I said that. I don’t necessarily think that we need to rehash every detail. If it sucked then… I am pretty sure it still sucks. At least for me it does… I still believe what David Housel envisioned: 2-4 NCs during Tub’s era. He simply threw it away. Nice record… but wasted time.
If you are misunderstanding that I am trying to provide mitagation for Tubs… you got ME all wrong. I was a big fan when he came to AU in his pinewood box. But he lost me in 2003 when he promised a NC and went 7-5. I never recovered my trust of the guy. Add too that mistrust the ducking hunting during recruiting… the rumor mill job searches that were simply manufactured by his crew to get him more money with AU….
I have a very different version of loyalty.
This is why he is at Texas Tech. This is why he went 5-7 (2-7 in the Big XII) this year.
Texas Tech will get smart…. real soon. I think this year. Tubs will be unemployed yet again…
WDE
I believe I'm saying Tub closed the deal.
The fact is whether you like it or not, Franklin’s system works. Even at lowly Troy he gave the likes of UF, Arky, and USC very competitive games. Given the talent at Auburn, he should have and could have won those games. I blame our offensive woes of ’08 solely on the offensive position coaches. With the bank roll these guys make, their opinion ultimately didn matter, otherwise they would have became the OC. They were unprofessional and like it or not BAD COACHES with the possible exception of Gran. And once again Franklin has produced large numbers with La Tech. I dislike Franklins playalling and overall concept but you cannot debate his numbers. I believe if you do your research you would see Tubbs is on average of all Tech coaches so unless he really screws up he has nowhere to go but up, especially giving the incoming lower tiered talent into the Big 12. Your disdain for him is obvious, but to blame CTT for all of ’03 is ludicrous. Yes we had a great D, but once again we were playing Nall was our OC and just as we saw in his second stint of OC duties it just DOES NOT WORK! 2-4 MNCs is preposterous. In the game today only 2 coaches have multiple MNCs: Urban and Saban. Yes both people did it in a 10 year span but it took Tebow for Urban and 2 different schools for Little Nickey. Do i think Saban deals under the table? Yes. But this years D would have stopped alot of NFL teams. Just like our MNC in ’10 EVERYTHING has to line up perfectly, one hiccup will screw you ie. Colt Mccoy going down, OSU loss to Iowa St on the day after a fatal crash. Be an optimist all you want but be realistic about it. Untill CSL shows me something amazing, I shall be riding the train with Sparkey about this being a possible bad hire and doubting him every step of the way.
Whether I like it or not...
has nothing to do with it.
I am not sure what version of history you saw… but I well aware of what I lived through. I don’t need anyone to try to re-write history for me. Your entitled to your opinion. We will just have to disagree.
WDE
Did you read what you wrote??

And when it went South, you’re saying it wasn’t his fault??
Damn. I am confused.
Whose fault was it? Jason Campbells? I know…. Ronnie Brown. No, Cadillac Williams for getting hurt?
Damn right it was his fault.
And yes. I do think AU was capable of 2-4 NC’s staring in 2003. What is to say that we weren’t capable? bama wasn’t a threat. Our only competition was ARK and LSU. The problem was Tuberville wasn’t in the game. His house wasn’t in order. Most folks saw that vividly in 2008 when he allowed his house of cards to crumble and he got his self run out of town. To defend him after all these years… well, I guess you must be a Tuberville fan. I hear you can still follow him over at Texas Tech…. for a limited time only.

Loeffler should be an outstanding hire!
Top two things I like about this hire:
1) a QB coach to focus on the most important position on the team. Outside of Cam, Auburn’s QB’s underachieved for too many years (even Campbell underachieved his first three years). A solid QB makes a good team great, but an average QB makes a good team average.
2) a flexible offensive style to adapt to players strengths. This is the new forward-thinking direction of offensive strategy. Identify each players strength and develop your offense around those strengths.
- Its no coincidence that these two characteristics were Malzahn’s biggest weaknesses.
Does Auburn make a late push for Jamies Winston with Loeffler?
- Can’t hurt to dream right? It only makes sense that Auburn signs another QB with Trotter out.
- There are some serious battlelines drawn between Auburn/FSU for several top recruits and Loeffler should be able to recruit the state of Florida well. I need to see and Auburn/FSU matchup on the football field asap.

Absolutely a solid hire. I think SL will do great things at AU. I look forward to reverting back to AU’s traditional ways.
I just wonder why “due dilligence” takes so long to decide. This guy could have been hired 30 days ago. We are currently ranked as #21 on Rivals Recruiting… and that is the site that LIKES AU. We have absolutely taken it in the shorts falling from our high of #6 to where we are today.
I think Chizik played the hire as cautious… because he knows it will determine his fate. He knows the mistakes of Tommy T and I can respect him for not wanting to repeat . I think we will get at least 3 years from SL. But as someone pointed out… that’s not written in stone.
Obviously Chizik had to have a ‘short list’. I heard he had even talked extensively with John Gruden. I don’t think SL was his #1 choice. I do think he was counting on a NFL hire/prospect. And based upon how folks did – I think the truth changed. Extensions were given. Salaries were compensated. People changed their minds.
I actually see this hire (with the pro experience on the resume) as being insightful. The fact that he is a good recruiter is the most prominent thing about him that makes up for the wait. The way I see it – a pro guy will work 80-90-100 hours a week. But I am not sure how they would do during recruiting. Further, by being so well respected… we might have just openned up more doors.
Now is the time to monitor the “bump” of the hire. Let’s see if we reap any benefit for our “due dilligence”? I think we might…. you know the kid (5star RB) that enrolled at bama is kicking himself right now.
War Eagle!
Let’s all not forget that Loeffler is/was a desirable commodity…that could have contributed to the length of time. But it also sounds like Chizik prioritized: 1. Bowl game, 2. DC (’cause he knew exactly who he wanted), 3. OC.
I feel like he took his time with the first coordinator hires as well. We might as well get used to it.

One word...Transition
When you are a 5-19 coach going to a campus where the collective response to your hire was “WTF??!!”, you don’t have a lot of cache when it comes to doing what you want, when you want. Throw in the fact that Chizik was facing an upcoming roster crisis due to Tubberville’s Black Hole class of ‘08, he had no other choice but to get the flashiest coordinators that Auburn could afford and the best recruitiers that money could buy.
Of course you always hope that they hires you make are going to last as lone as you want them to but I think in this case Chiz needed Gus to give us an offense that would beat the middle of the road guys and get us to a bowl game. I think Roof was the caretaker of the defense and to implement and manage Chiziks strategey. I don’t think either was viewed as a long term hire but stop gaps to get us to the point where we had the talent and the stability to hire the guys that would take us to the next level. Cam of couse was an unexpected Gold asteroid that landed in Chiziks lap and he was able to go to the promised land. But the other two years are pretty much what I think was expected.
Now Gene gets to implement his vision. Hopefully Loeffler is going to be an innovator and blend the pro style and spread together to give you a truly contemporary and maddening to defend offense. Van Gorder is that classic enforcer who will forge a monstrous front seven that is mean, nasty and fast to make Chizik’s defense a world beater again..
This was supposed to happen….this was the transition to what Chizik really wants to do. Now we will see if he can craft a champion. If the players are up to the task I have no doubts that Chizik can lead them there.
I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.
Actually...
Believe this or not, but I happen to agree with Colonel on this one. I think now we’re starting to see the true creation that Chizik wanted to bring to Auburn. I hope with all hopes that Loeffler can do exactly what you’re saying and with BVG creating a brutal defense all over again, this Auburn team could be infuriating for opponents for the next three or so years and you will see Auburn compete in the west if Loeffler can come through on his end of the ball.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
I highly doubt this...
. you know the kid (5star RB) that enrolled at bama is kicking himself right now.
I will say this, I, like you, expect a jump in the recruiting rankings rather quickly.
Is it enough to get back into the Top 6?, Top 10? We will just have to wait and see. The biggest thing is the relief that this is over. No more wondering who, by the players. It’s time to get to work, and get in shape for next season.

AUSports is saying that we had an inhome visit today of Ricardo Louis. Trooper Taylor flew to Miami to see him. Rumor is that he is a big possible flip.
But going back to my point before: CSL and Temple was #7 in rushing.
That’s in the Nation. Kevin McGrady did an article on BR I think is warranted to discuss – it talks about common opponents Temple and bama had: Kent State and PSU. I think folks will be surprised with the results.
I wonder if TJ Yeldon is infatuated with bama’s hire?? Further, I wonder if Iron Mike is excited about being at ARK STATE with Gus and his wife??
I got to disagree with you KB… I think the answer to both is NO. I think both of them would love to be at AU moving back to tradition and the excitement of doing something new.
PASS THE KOOLAIDE!!!
WDE
What makes him such a great recruiter?
I’ve asked that many times and nobody has a valid answer. Tom Brady is not a valid answer-did he actually bring Tom Brady to Michigan. Furthermore, it seems to me that Tom Brady got a whole lot better after he went to the pros than when he was at Michigan. I mean, he was drafted in the sixth round. That’s not exactly a sterling endorsement for the guy. Now the fact that he still runs the workouts with Tom Brady certainly is a huge help. Again, I’m not saying anything as I have nothing positive to say. I’m certainly thrilled with BVG though! Power to the stache!
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
So, I’ve been trying to track down specifics, but I gotta get back to work. I did find this site-and while it won’t directly answer your question, there is more information there…..
So what if Brady was taken in the 6th round?? It hasn’t stopped him from winning Super Bowls. I would imagine that winning Super Bowls supersedes which round in the Draft a player goes….but, whatevs….

I think you completely missed my point...
What I am saying is that his record as a quarterback developer is not helped that much by Tom Brady coming from Michigan and being drafted in the sixth round. Shouldn’t a talent like that who would go on to win multiple Super Bowls be drafted earlier than the sixth round? Doesn’t that mean his college development qb coach was a little lacking? Why did he all of a sudden explode with the Patriots but he didn’t look that great with Michigan? Actually, your point on him winning Super Bowls only strengthens my argument that I question his quarterback development skills. I’m not so sure Charlie Weiss doesn’t deserve that credit. It seems to me when he met Weiss that’s when Brady become Captain America.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Really?
You would have a point, except Brady still trains with Loeffler during the off season. He goes back to Loeffler to work on mechanics….So why would Brady waste time getting training from Loeffler, unless he actually gets something from it??? To get the total draft picture, you would have to go back and look at the Patriot’s needs for that year (and the quarterback needs from various teams)….I don’t have that kind of energy, and frankly I don’t think it’s that important.
Please tell your dislike of this hire hangs somewhere besides the 6th round of an NFL draft……..

I agree with ToTM here... *GASPING*
Somebody write it down.
I am not sure about you… but if he came to recruit my son… TODAY…. he would be totally sold when he mentioned his dealings with Brady. You know… the QB that is about to surpass Joe Montana’s records?
Add to that… he brought Temple (albeit in a crap conference) to #7 in rushing in the Nation.
I think the guy will bring excitement back to AU. And if i were a RB… or a QB…. I would mark AU down as a possible…. no matter what just because they had a teacher with that kind of incite.
I can’t wait till A-day!

Believe me...
My dislike of this hire goes WAY beyond the fact that Tom Brady got drafted in the sixth round of the NFL draft after his development by Loeffler, though I still see that as an indictment. Do not even get me started on Tebow’s mechanics…wow. I hope that’s not his selling point. Tebow is still working on some MAJOR mechanical issues in the NFL, though I really like Tebow. Ryan Mallet also became the terror for opposing defenses when he met Bobby Petrino. In addition, if Loeffler is such a great recruiter, Chizik didn’t need to take sooooooooooo long to make a hire of a guy he interviewed nearly a month ago early in the process of finding the guy. Actually, that’s just the tip of the iceberg on my problems with Loeffler. I’ve got so many I can’t put them all down on here. BVG fantastic hire. Scot seems like Roof 2.0 to me.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Chill out Sparkey, read my main post before you slit your wrists.
There are a lot of positives about SL. You need to sit back and look.
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
I'm not that upset...
Now while I do like to cut up and act out a character on here I’ve become, I’m not exactly like that in person and don’t honestly think I’m in danger of slitting my wrists because I’m not. Besides, I’d go across the street instead of down the road because I want attention hahaha. I very much hope our quarterbacks get properly developed with Loeffler.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Just in case you missed this in Chizik's part of this presser.....
Chizik stated that he took on the DC for the Bowl game, and no other responsibility. He wanted to insure that 30th win in 3 years. hence him saying that in three different interviews with ESPN. 30 wins in 3 years, say it real fast, it actually sounds like a selling point.
Then he went after his comfortable hire in BVG, whom he knew rather well, from the Frank Broyles award and return flight back east, which they took together.
Then and only then, did he look for an OC. 12 days is all it took. Count the days from BVG’s announcement. 12 DAYS! Is that sooooooo long? Nope, not even!

i didn't lose a second of sleep over this hire!
here’s my prediction:
Special Teams – best since ‘83 with Del Greco, Gainous, Colbert & Co.
Defense – points per game back below 17 … more of the INTENSITY we saw in the peach bowl
Offense – can’t promise 70 pts against Clemson as WVa did … but OL will be much better, 3 or 4 running backs will contribute every week … passing attack will start at about 14-25 for a few weeks but will improve in short order, you bet!

That didn't tell me much at all...
other than the fact that Temple fans do like him. I do like that. I also read where a bunch of Florida fans are thrilled we got Scot because they think he was terrible for Florida. That didn’t make me happy which sort of brought me back to the middle again but just about every Michigan fan seems to think he’ll be a great quarterback developer. He is the guy who first went after Ryan Mallet. Interestingly, does anybody know who the Patriots drafted at quarterback just recently? It makes you wonder if Loeffler has some kind of connection with the folks in Boston.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
I think where you may be missing his recruiting is his second thru 5th years at Michigan...
Look at Michigan’s QB roster from that time frame, it’s a who’s who of the NFL that was recruited by their QB coach. Add to that Brantley at Florida. Yeah, I know Brantley hasn’t done much, but IMO he has received the short end of the stick with the coaching changes there. He definitely has potential. Plus he did say that he recruited Frazier and Moseley while he was at Florida. They are good enough for AU, and UF. So he sees potential there as well.
Come and join me at http://trackemtigers.com
He was terrible at UF?
I seem to recall tremendous success at UF during his tenure. UF fans a probably still bitter that Brantley didn’t live up to expectations in 2010 after a string of great QBs.
I'm just telling you what the Florida fans were saying...
They also had nothing to say about him as a recruiter either. The ones that seemed the most positive on our new OC were the Michigan people. It definitely made me stop and wonder when I saw that Big 10 people loved him, and SEC people didn’t think he was any good. Just sayin.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
I am not sure who you are listening too...
The news I am seeing on AUSPORTS and Bleacher Report basically say the guy is a stud.
I think the future just got bright again.
Check out what Kevin McGrady says on BR – I thought he did a great analysis of common opponents of bama and temple (PENNSTATE and KENT STATE).
I think we hit the jack pot.
First check if that is true is if we pull back Ricardo Louis from FSU. It’s highly possible that this happens.
I think we can get excited…. when is A day again???

Slow down on K-Mac
I love Kevin McGrady but he is the eternal sunshine pumper from the peaks of rainbow gumball optimistic mountain. I love the guy and I’ve known him for years now, but he ain’t always objective when it comes to Auburn.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
I have known him for a while too...
and I think your perceptions and mine are very different.
I see a guy who uses statistics to prove his points.
Is he right all the time?? No. But I can much better listen to good or bad when comparing the numbers when looking at similar apples to apples comparisons.
WDE
as Dan Rather says, "Hold on to your hat"
i’m as excited about the Be Very Good defense as you are, but remember: we’re not going to show anything at A-Day (try one of the open scrimmages instead)

Yeah... I remember folks saying that in 2010.
And then I saw #2 come on the field.
I think we will see enough to know. Just like then.
WDE
Here is an article on al.com that tracts his coaching successes.
It doesn’t cite specifics about recruiting though…
“But don’t peg Loeffler as a running offensive coordinator. His other stops showed diversity and development. His quarterbacks who made it to the NFL are Tebow, Tom Brady, Brian Griese, Drew Henson, John Navarre and Chad Henne.”

Well, let's all hope I'm wrong on our new OC.
Regardless of what anybody may say on here, Ted Roof is gone. I said Ted Roof was not good from the start and I never thought he fit. Say what you will, but how many of you would be happy to take Ted Roof over Van Gorder now? My issue is this: There’s is no way I would take Scot Loeffler over Gus Malzahn and there is no comparison between the two in my book. You know, I kept hearing over and over how Gene Chizik wanted a guy with experience. He was HUGE on experience. Right…because Loeffler has more than…what was that…oh yeah….ONE YEAR of offensive coordinator experience and guys come on he got that at Temple. He wasn’t exactly facing the likes of Georgia, Alabama, LSU, and even Ole Miss’s defense for that matter. I would’ve much rather gotten somebody with more offensive coordinator experience. I’m just not happy with this hire one bit. He will have to score at least 21+ points on SEC defenses as an average for me to change my mind. The timing was bad. The candidate lacks real experience. He is coming from a much weaker conference. There were much more proven commodities out there. The guy hasn’t proven he can run an offense that can throw the ball with much proficiency and that was Auburn’s biggest weakness by far on offense in 2011. I really do think the offense will be worse in 2012. If there is improvement, it will be marginal at best and Gus’s spread (that’s not really a spread) won’t look so bad anymore at that point.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
So....
You don’t trust Gene Chizik to pick the right hire for OC.
Or, you don’t believe that the interview process was as detailed as Scot Loeffler said it was.
Or, you completely disagree with me that Auburn needed a top notch QB coach.
Or, is it all of the above?

None of the above is my response actually.
First of all I trust Chizik’s hiring ability for the most part but I don’t trust him implicitly as you need look no further than much maligned Ted Roof. I like Chizik and I greatly respect him. I have said that a number of times and I was nothing but positive about the hire of Van Gorder but everybody has completely overlooked that.
Now here is what I don’t trust about the hire: I don’t trust one year of experience in the MAC. I don’t trust an air attack for a first year offensive coordinator that might as well have not existed. I don’t agree that Loeffler is this quarterback development guru. As I’ve said, Tom Brady was only a sixth round pick under the development of Scot Loeffler, but when he teamed up with Charlie Weiss Tom Brady became an incredible quarterback and he would go on to be one of the best quarterbacks of all time. I realize the retort well he went to the Super Bowl. Yes, that retort is in fact, correct. That said, he became an entirely different quarterback in the NFL and anybody who watched Michigan during those years will tell you that Brady was not half the quarterback at Michigan that he has become today. That transformation happened after Loeffler not during so I see that as another reason to disagree with the hire.
Let’s move on to the polarizing figure of Tim Tebow. The former Gator was slammed by scout after scout and analyst after analyst for not having the proper mechanics. Look, I’m not saying Tim Tebow is not an effective quarterback at Denver. I think that he is and he is my second favorite football player right now. As much as I love the man, his mechanics still need a lot of work. Unfortunately, I saw about the worst mechanics out of Tim Tebow as any effect college quarterback I’ve ever seen. Was Tim Tebow not willing to learn the proper mechanics from Loeffler? I highly doubt it.
People also mention Ryan Mallet as a good reason to hire Loeffler but here again I disagree. In fact, I would say that the former Razorback gives me the strongest ammunition in my argument against our new OC. I’m not sure if anybody has checked Mallet’s stats his first year there but his numbers were AWFUL. When Lloyd Carr left Michigan and Rich Rodriguez came to Ann Arbor, Ryan Mallet soon transferred away from Michigan and he later became the force at Arkansas soon after Bobby Petrino was his quarterbacks coach. Honestly, the difference in Mallet at Arkansas as opposed to Mallet at Michigan was astronomical. He produced ridiculous numbers for the Razor Backs, but he was just about atrocious at Michigan.
Now to your questions: To the first question, I do trust Gene Chizik to make the offensive coordinator hire as he hired Gus Malzahan whom I have defended against everybody here and been as loyal to Gus as anybody has been to any of the Auburn coaches on here. I do not trust Gene Chizik on the first defensive coordinator with Ted Roof as I never thought he belonged. I do trust him though in the hire of Van Gorder as that was an incredibly brilliant move and I think Chizik is a true master of secrecy the way he kept that so quiet. By the last two weeks, a few people kind of saw the Loeffler thing coming down the pipe line especially one Phillip Marshall.
I do agree that the interview process was that detailed actually. I have no doubt that’s how Gene Chizik has done every single coaching hire thus far at Auburn. That said, these extensive interviews did lead him to hire Phillip Lolley and it evidently didn’t work out there. In addtion, while a phenomenal recruiter, Thigpen’s performance hasn’t looked that spectacular either so far. I’d say the jury is still out on Pelton. I am not impressed with Pelton yet, but I’m not unimpressed either. I remain completely neutral and I simply think we don’t know yet because of the massive amounts of inexperience he had to coach up along with constant season ending injuries. I agree the interview process was detailed about as much as you can detail an interview of that nature, but Phillip Lolley and Ted Roof were both hired by much the same system and I think both of those were bad hires by Gene Chizik.
I completely agree that auburn needed a top notch quarterback coach. You the see I just don’t have the belief that Loeffler is a top notch QB coach. How could anybody have allowed Tim Tebow’s mechanics? Had somebody taught the kid properly back at Florida, he would be a much higher rated passer and he would not take as many sacks as his release time would improve.
Lastly, KB the way you worded that was a bit unnecessary and somewhat hurtful. Normally I’ve got incredibly thick skin, but this didn’t feel like a lighthearted jab this time. It felt like it was more of clear right hook and it was worded to make me sound dumb for not agreeing with the hire. I think the world of you and I hold you in the highest regard of anybody I see write articles for Auburn. I think you’re a stand up man and I have the utmost respect for you that’s why this stung like it did. Ouch KB.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Mixed response here...
First. I have tried and tried to get a well thought out, rational, and fantastically worded response from you. I know, you have the gift. You reached the full potential, that I know you posses, with this response to my questions.
Secondly. NEVER, and I mean NEVER, would I want anyone to feel as if I purposely attacked them. That most certainly was not my intention, and I apologize that you took it that way.
Now in summation. I know we disagree on several things, and I relish those discussions. We must never back away from examining ourselves, and the comments of our loyal readers sometimes do just that. Do not ever stop commenting your beliefs. They are, and will continue to be, most welcome. That goes for everybody that visits our blog.

No need to apologize to me KB...
I’m being a bit of a whiney baby this week. I’m the one that owes the apologies. By the way, I’m coming up with an all-decade defensive and offensive team for the next Vicodin Diaries Volume O. I appreciate the statements and it is not your fault I took it that way. That’s my fault. Forgive me man, I was in the wrong. Thank you for the kind words on this response. I wish I could take that last part out of what I said because it doesn’t belong and it was really ridiculous. Thanks for being understanding KB. Have a wonderful and blessed weekend!
