Why your quarterback should be the best player on your team

I was thinking about writing this post even before SL was announced as our new OC. With all the talk about his prowess of coaching QB's I felt it was even more appropriate.

First what is the job of a QB

1. Team leader

2. Coach on the field

3. The engineer that drives the train

4. The man you look to when your are hurting and down.

There a a bunch more but I will stop there.

Consider a few college quarterbacks that were pretty darn good and what they meant to their team. I admit I was a little lazy compiliing stats but it is so damn boring it was tough to stay focused.

Payton Manning-His 4 years at Tenn the team went 8-4,11-1,10-2,11-2

Tom Brady-His 2 starting years at Michigan the team went 10-3,10-2

Big Ben-At Miami University, Ohio (not a powerhouse by any stretch) in 2003 the team went undefeated and finished ranked 10th nationally.

Bret Favre-His record at Southern Miss was spotty but they were a stepchild team that played a lot of quality opponents. The record during his tenure, 6-5,10-2,5-6,8-4

Can Newton-I don't really need to say anything about Cam. It goes without saying what he meant to his team.

I know there are many more examples of what an "Elite" QB means to a team but like I said, I was lazy.

IMO, the bottom line to this we have not had a stellar QB at Auburn in a long time, (Sully was pretty good too, and we won with him) other than Cam and possibly Jason Campbell in 04 and it shows. You can have all the big uglies in the world, all the top notch running backs, and all the sticky fingered receivers on the planet but if you can't get it done at the QB position it will all be wasted. Granted you need those other pieces of the puzzle to make a championship team, you have to have the "Guy" under center.

We have the QB's on campus and coming in that can be that "GUY" if they are developed.

All that being said, I am very excited about SL as our OC because he has a rep of teaching and developing top notch QB's. If for no other reason but that you should also be excited about Scot.

Welcome to the Family Scot.

Let's hope...

That he can bring out the high level of performance from both Moseley and Frazier. I am curious to see what he’ll do with those two and for that matter Zeke Pike. I have to wonder what he thinks about Pike as well. I’d be interested to see how he looks at Pike. That’s a big deal when you consider that Zeke Pike is going to be the first true freshman quarterback Loeffler will work with at Auburn.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

Zeke Pike is 6' 5" and weighs 220 lbs....

He runs a 4.7 40 and was selected as one of the Elite 11 in Trent Dilfers Quarterback camp.
Tremendous upside, just a physical specimen as a QB. He has the wheels to outrun most DE’s and LB’s, and the arm to take his game to the next level.
If Zeke will keep his head on straight, he now has the opportunity to get picked first in the draft when his time comes.

my brother played QB - you're right!

Northview High, Dothan 1982 … also co-valedictorian, class favorite, president of the Interact Club, etc … now a successful orthopaedic surgeon. (Great role model after my dad died, too … i was the baby of the family)

i always think QB first when i’m considering the heisman

Legit question:

But would you have classified either McCarron or Jefferson as “the guy,” this year?

I don’t disagree with you — in fact, the number of instances where you have a BCS champion with a middling quarterback are fairly few (Flynn, Leak, whatever slow white guy Ohio State had under center in ’02).

(Last part stricken because memory is a funny thing — when I went to look up Craig Krenzel’s stats, it appears that he went 24-3 (!) for his career (citation here, because I wouldn’t believe it if someone said it either).)

In the case of McCarron or Jefferson

McCarron (as much as it pains me to say it) just may be the “guy”. He has really developed and was just a soph this past year. One look at Jeffersons play in the championship game told you he was not the “guy”. He folded when it meant the most.

Like I said, you need all the other pieces to win championships but the QB is the MUST HAVE.

One more piece of evidence….look at the Colts record in 2010 with Payton playing and in 2011 with him on the sideline.
Personally, I really think Zeke will take the first snap from center against Clemson.

Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?

If Pike is the opening day starter, it’s going to be a long season. It’s rare when a freshman can come in and be successful right away at any position, but especially at quarterback. I don’t know the kid personally and can only go by media reports of his character, but he has problem child written all over him. I wouldn’t shock me if he isn’t on the team 2 years from now.

My other knock on him is that he played his high school ball in Kentucky. That isn’t a state known for high level high school football. Even with his early enrollment, I expect him to red-shirt.

I can't disagree with anything you said Flash

I just have a feeling about the kid. We have not had many QBs with his physical skills. Hope I am right and you are wrong. No disrespect intended.

Have to agree on McCarron.

……He looked pretty sharp in the latter half of the season. Knows what he’s doing, doesn’t take risks, has pocket presence and mobility, and has the arm strength to make all of the throws. We can only hope the Bama brain trust wastes him handing off the ball 90 percent of the time!

If we are handing off that often...

…then we must be winning. I’ll take 90% run and a W thank you.

The QB race will be very interesting....

As much as a physical specimen Pike is, the kid’s got to grow up and take a Social Media 101 class. That said, it seems like Loeffler is the guy to whip anyone into shape. Pike has got to be stoked for a chance to work with this guy!!! I’m wondering if we will see Frazier slowly transition to a WR type of position, but he also may respond better to Loeffler’s style of coaching. As for the Mosenator, he’s got a tremendous amount of passion and heart, let’s just hope he can get to a place where he can channel all that into ability.

I think that the Colts’ problems went beyond the loss the Peyton for the season. I think that there were multiple injuries to key positions (although, I wasn’t paying that close of attention to the surprising train wreck that was Colts football). The fact that the Colts are talking about kicking Peyton the curb after losing his services for one season makes me sick to my stomach. And I don’t consider myself even a moderate Manning fan….stay classy Indy!

Granted the Colts were playing with missing pieces

But I don’t think many will disagree that with a healthy Peyton they would have finished at least above .500.
I think it will also be sad if they kick Peyton to the curb but they won the Andrew Luck sweepstakes and Peyton ties up a whole lot of paycheck dollars.

If you’re Andrew Luck, how awkward is all of this?? You could be that guy that kicked Peyton Awesomesauce Manning from the legendary Colts!! (Not that Luck personally would do this, but you know perception and all….)

Worked out ok..

….for Aaron Rogers up in Green Bay. Of course, Peyton was never a pick-thrower like Farve.

If Frazier goes to become another WR...

Auburn is not gonna pick up many dual threat quarterbacks for a long, long time. I hope we keep him at quarterback the entire time.

QB Talk

I’ve been reading stories about how Loeffler coached all of these great QB’s, but you have to admit; these QB’s have talent, and you can’t teach talent; you can coach it, but you can’t teach it! Now, if he’d taken a “no star” recruit and made him into a Tom Brady or a Peyton Manning or a Cam Newton, then I’d say this new OC was a great hire. I’m going to let time tell the story. I hope he turns out to be the greatest OC in college football history!

A coach can develop talent, regardless of the intitial amount...

… but a coach can’t install the work ethic and drive necessary to be a star (at any level). Work ethic is a personality thing that coaches can only influence a small amount.

by B_B on Jan 24, 2012 12:16 PM CST up reply actions

Not really IMO

“Talent” is God given. Talent has to be coached, but you can’t “coach a guy to be talented”. A coach may ‘unlock’ hidden talent, polish obvious talents, or make the most of minimal talents, but he can’t “add talent”. I can guarantee you, there’s not a coach alive, or that’s ever lived, that could “coach me up” or “develop me” to be an SEC QB, or even a HS QB for that matter.

Recruit a 4th QB?

I’m going to be disappointed if Auburn doesn’t sign another QB in this class. Why not bring in a 4th QB for depth and competition? It makes no sense to only have three QBs on the roster, especially with a QB-developing OC. Not only that, all three QBs are completely unproven. Competition is a good thing right?

What if a QB goes down in spring or fall practice? You can’t risk going into a season with only two QBs… can you?

i wouldn't lose a second of sleep if C.J. UZOMAH got another shot!

Heck … Kentucky crammed 54 plays into the head of a converted receiver to beat Tennessee!

Ive always said

that Auburn lives and dies by quarterback play. It’s not hard to look over the history of Auburn football and see that when we have great QB play, we have great seasons. While this may come across as a “no duh” statement, I think the ability of our new coordinator to develop QB’s can only be seen as positive. If he can get the most out of our guys and scheme around their strengths, I expect good things.

They gonna be a lot of days when you lay your guts on the line and you come up empty-handed. They ain't a damn thing you can do about it but go back and lay 'em on the line again, and again, and again....You'll keep fightin' like you did today, you'll keep playin' like that, we can build a foundation we can live a looong, long time on at Auburn." -Pat Dye, 1981

A great QB is a nice thing to have...

And a great QB can carry a team. Some would say that was the case with Cam, but 4 of that offense made NFL rosters. A couple of others made it as far as NFL camps. It was not a team of scrubs carried by Cam.

Auburn is a good example of the OP’s point. 1993, Undefeated, Stan White carried a clipboard in the NFL for 3 years, and if I recall, even started a couple of games due to injuries. 2004, Undefeated, Jason Campbell, NFL starter. 2010, Undefeated, NC, Cam Newton, Rookie Pro Bowler.
