Friday Ramblings National Signing Day Primer

Recruiting....
It's that time of year again as we head down the stretch toward NSD. Many questions are to be answered soon, the least of which is, did Auburn hire their OC in time to help make a strong finish?
Auburn can only sign 23 recruits if my calculations are correct, of which five are already enrolled, and on campus. They are Illinois transfer Fullback Jay Prosch, Quarterback Zeke Pike, Linebacker Javiere Mitchell, and Offensive Linemen Shane Callahan, and Patrick Miller.
Auburn has 12 verbal commits, according to rivals.com, that have yet to sign Letters Of Intent (LOI), or enroll early. That list consists of 3 Defensive Backs, 2 Offensive Linemen, 2 Tight Ends, 1 Linebacker, 1 Running Back, 1 Wide Receiver, and 2 Defensive Linemen.
If Auburn holds on to the remaining verbal commits, that leaves 7, as the number of athletes that can sign to play at Auburn this year.
Of course, the scholarship situation could change among the walk-on players, but I am thinking that Coach Chizik wouldn't yank a scholarship from a player, unless the player were to be suspended. As far as we know, there are no suspended players on the football team, at this time.
On to the targets of the AU coaching staff. We know that there are a couple or more of 5* recruits that are waiting until NSD to announce their intentions. Of which several have Auburn listed among their favorites. How many we actually get sign is another matter. These highly rated recruits include Stefon Diggs - WR, Aziz Shittu - DL, Eddie Goldman - DL.
There are so many 4* rated prospects, that I won't try and name them here because I would not want to leave a name off, and seem disrespectful. Rest assured there are plenty out there that have AU listed among their final choices, although we may not see but a few of them, in Orange and Navy.
Program reminder....
Track Em Tigers will run an all day thread up until about 4 o'clock on NSD February 1st, 2012. Every single commitment will be covered here, along with information about each athlete that decides to join our wonderful family.
Thank GOD for our state media coverage...
If you have seen this phrase - "Auburn will not run the fast paced offense, as it did under Gus Malzahn" - in an article this week, raise your hand. I think that's about everybody, thanks. You may put your hands down now.
That was some "pure genius" news reporting. To come up with the combination of a new offensive coordinator, and the idea that the play calling will be different, had to take some serious digging for the facts. Take that, as the most sarcastic statement to date from this writer. The list of comments by the national media that spewed the obvious was actually much longer, I just had to make that one the example. It's like one reporter wrote a story, and everyone else copied down his notes.
In fact, the media bias is so bad in this state, and indeed the south, that some columnists have turned to sarcasm, and comedy to point out this absurdity. Take for example THIS post on chuckoliver.net...
"After much careful deliberation we determined continuing our 120 year tradition of football was the appropriate decision," said Auburn Trustee John G. Blackwell. "Considering Auburn is one season removed from the national championship and Heisman Trophy winner, and remembering we did participate and win a bowl game this season, we felt scrapping the program - as so many suggested - would be an imprudent step."
Chadd Scott hits a homerun with this parody, of the type of reporting Auburn sees on a daily basis.
At least one local media outlet has the audacity to want a monthly premium for their stories about Auburn football. I won't pay for recruiting news, what makes them think I will pay for their coverage of AU sports? If you are a paying member for this local newspaper's AU sports news, don't take this as an offense. It seems to me to be a lazy way of paying for their expenses, instead of actually finding some advertisers to support their product.
It's not just the print media either. The vast majority of the talking heads of the local news channels are so in love with themselves and all things against AU, that they can only give you the worst information when it comes to reporting AU news. I shouldn't even call them reporters.
It's like they have all anted up and hired the former SID from our little brother school in West Vance.
You know the guy, don't you?
Sure you do. The guy that gave us the term Mythical National Championship. The spin master that dreamed up the supposed extra championships they now claim.
If you listen to the sports news in this state, and take every word as gospel, you only have you to blame. Now, you can't say that I didn't warn you.
Now that the hiring is done....
I would not worry too much about the pace, nor the "style" of offense CSL will run at Auburn. If he is as good as we think he is, Auburn's offense will be more flexible, and able to adapt than ever before. We won't see many 3rd and 1 situations, with our QB operating from the shotgun.
We could go on and on about what went wrong with Auburn's offense last season, but we don't want to live in the past. Auburn has a "new beginning" according to our beloved head football coach, and we should concentrate our visions and efforts in that direction.
Comment of the week...
This is one of those rare occasions, that I get to say, that I not only do I agree with a comment, but that I have been saying essentially the same thing. The winner this week is SandMountain Tiger
Ive always said
that Auburn lives and dies by quarterback play. It’s not hard to look over the history of Auburn football and see that when we have great QB play, we have great seasons. While this may come across as a "no duh" statement, I think the ability of our new coordinator to develop QB’s can only be seen as positive. If he can get the most out of our guys and scheme around their strengths, I expect good things.
Conventional wisdom is that a good QB can make an average team good, and a great QB can make an average team great. How Auburn fans would ever find fault with this is baffling to me.
My take....
Have we lost our memories so quickly?
Can we not recall the wonderment and excitement we experienced just two season's ago? Cam Newton is just the latest example of how a great QB, can carry a team when it needs to be carried, and take them to the pinnacle of their football world.
Does it take a Cam Newton to win? No. What it takes is leadership, and control. We seen that in force with Cam.
It has been my contention throughout the OC search that Auburn NEEDED a QB coach. Too many times last season we saw indecision on the part of the QB's. All three of them. Now we wait and see, if the "guru" can coach them up, or if we search other parts of the earth for another QB.
My belief is that Clint Moseley, and Kyle Frazier have what it takes to win at Auburn. They now have a true QB coach to get them prepared for the better defenses in the league. That is not a knock on Gus Malzahn. I remember that it took Gus four weeks to fully realize what a talent he had in Cam Newton.
In the upcoming season, we won't have four weeks to evaluate the talent. It has to be done in practice, and in the film room. We must punish Clemson, and send a message to all others on our schedule. We're back!

…..is the defacto-modus-operandi of most columnist these days. Most just repeat what they’ve read on the wire elsewhere. That’s how CBS reported Joe-Pa’s death 18 hours too soon. Come on, man? At least sample the data?
…..Honestly, it was refreshing in the wee hours this week to disregard media hype (or disdain!) on Scot Loeffler, and just try to digest the facts. I’d daresay that most national writers don’t get it. Media vibe on Loeffler is positive, if he succeeds, they be all “I toleYa SO!” If he fails, you’ll see the the “heh.” One year in the MAC. Auburn’s athletic department is a bunch of doofasses!
…..Biggest question to me is chemistry on the coaching staff. The SEC has added two teams, and we’re in a competitive, transitive swirl right now. If the staff fights like during the brief Franklin era, we’re in trouble. There’s no way to know if that’s a possibility, till we see it play out. Hopefully, that won’t be the case.
…..On the other hand, guys like Grimes, Trooper, Boulware and Luper will benefit from another united team that knocks the lights out! What do you think would help those careers? Talk of adaptability? Or talk of disaster under their watch?
......Drowning in cool elixir.
The cool and calm demeanor of Gene Chizik...
can sometimes even lull the most ardent Auburn fan/alumni to sleep. Speaking from experience here… don’t be fooled.
I can say this about Coach C…. he only brings in folks he can work with. I don’t see there being any issues on our staff. There will not be another Tony Franklin moment at Auburn – not while Gene Chizik is at Auburn. Take it to the bank. We might get our tail handed to us… but the embarrassing crap that transpired under Tubervilles watch…. ain’t happening again.
BL: The chemistry will be fine.
But changing the mood a bit and looking at the un-coverage over at bama on their hire… what has ANYONE heard about Doug Nussmeier? Not a damn thing from what I can see. And did you hear that bama went out and rehired Lance Thompson? Remember him? He was the Grade A recruiter who left bama for Tennessee under Lane Kiffen. You want some chemistry… try that on for size. One gulp of Nick Saban…. every day! Yuck!
In closing, I think our Recruiting will be ok. In fact, I suspect AU will have the most movement on signing day. I am hoping for a top 5 finish. I am still not sure how bama and Miami can have over 25 signees. I think that is so crappy. But all is fair in love and football.

I actually agree with much of what you said. Again. Weird.

I don't think that waiting till NSD is the way to get to a top 5 finish in recruiting.
that is like waiting for a river card to make your hand. We aren’t playing the odds with this hand.
you do it and you wipe it up.
A couple things to consider about the rankings..
First, Auburn’s most dire need was LB. This year, there were ZERO 5* rated recruits at LB. The offensive and defensive lines were next in need for this staff, and many of then decided to wait until NSD to commit. It’s a lineman’s last chance at the spotlight, for 4 years, so they take it while they can get it.
As far as skill set players, the OC hire did take it’s toll, although the loss of Ricardo Louis, may have been premature, as he now has de-committed from FSU as well. I see AU as having a very good chance to get him back.
Most services see AU as the biggest jumper in the final rankings of this recruiting class, from where they are right now. A top 10 class is a victory for Chizik and this staff. Top 6 and higher is a distinct possibility.

Would be a coup
if we could pull ricardo louis, JaQuay Williams, and Stefon Diggs! More likely we get 1 of 3 right?

I am just guessing.. But I don't think top 6 is a remote possibility.
I like this class, …and we’ve got a chance w a good many players… But I just don’t think it is in the cards. We’re opting for a sprint,..gambling on a sprint at the end.. We should have been focused on a marathon.
you do it and you wipe it up.
I am not ready to take the Woe is Me attitude toward our recruiting class this year
Like Kool posted, we are addressing needs, not numbers.
Another point is I think we are fairly well positioned for this last week. The schools we are fighting for key guys have almost filled up their class and don’t have many schollys left to give. The uncomitted talent still out there is HUGE.
Look at it from this point of view….If you were a big time recruit where would you want to sign, a top notch school where you stand a good chance to play soon, or a top notch school where you will likely ride the pine for 2-3 yrs.
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
addition to above post
…..ride the pine for 2-3 yrs, get scholly pulled, greyshirt, redshirt, other color shirt.

Loeffler's hiring was national sports news...
… even though it wasn’t a “home run hire” (I hate that term btw). That shows how far AU has come under Chizik. Everyone is paying attention now and AU is (again) in the mix for top recruits from all over the country. Even if the OC hire was belated, the PR strategy was great. AU picked a days to announce both hirings when football was on everyone’s mind (NC game and NFL champ games) and the hiring would shot to the top of the national headlines.
- Whether AU finishes top 5 vs top 10 is irrelevant as long as its not far out of the top 10. However, a big bust on signing day would really hurt AU on several levels, mostly image, direction, and talent level. If nothing else, this signing day will be more dramatic than any I can remember.
- The QB comment is spot on. All teams need great or at least good QB play to compete for championships. Its no coincidence that Auburn’s best seasons have happened when the QB plays great.
- This reinforcing my preaching that AU should be signing a 4th QB in this class (especially with a QB developing coach). A 4th QB adds more competition AND increases the chances that a great QB is on the roster. Chizik’s apparent preference for only having 3 QBs just doesn’t make sense to me, especially considering its the most important position on the team!
It's not his choice to have three QB's...
That’s my take on it, not that Chizik has ever spoke to me.
A quality fourth QB is not available this late in the recruiting cycle, most have already been sewn up. With all of Auburn’s QB’s not being seniors, there is plenty of time to get two QB’s next year in recruiting. That’s where I would focus, if it were me.
Thanks to everyone for the kind remarks.

They apparently stopped recruiting QBs with Pike on board...
… at least from whats reported by the media. All signs point to Chiz having a three QB approach, which is too risky for my taste (a couple injuries from a disastrous season). There has only been 3 QBs each year of his tenure and he hasn’t focused on signing more than one each year.
- I agree that all the top QBs this year are taken, and maybe its too late this year. But I’m secretly hoping they pull a 4th QB to be the underdog. Loeffler’s a developer right?
Thanks for the all-around great ramblings. I’ve can’t stand the mainstream media and prefer your unbiased style. WDE!
Reps
Do we have enough reps to run 4 QBs in practice? I’m guessing 3 on team and one on scout team? Who ran scout team last year? Usually reserved for redshirts right? But Frazier was playing. Just curious.
"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass...and I'm all out of bubblegum."
by tigertracker on Jan 27, 2012 6:34 PM CST up reply actions
No, there's not enough
practice time to work even 2 QBs equally unless you choose to go with a true 2 QB system, which I’m not a fan of.
I don’t think there’s a QB coach on earth that can make an SEC QB out of Mosely.
Frazier only coming off his Fr. year where he was a role player, so we’ll have to wait and see.
There is also not any top notch QBs on the market this year
I just read a good article on SI.com about how the South in general is low in producing top notch QB prospects. It is by Andy Staples and I rec that you check it out. He makes some very good points.
We have 2 young QBs on campus right now and not getting one this year is not going to be a killer.
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
Maybe my point isn't clear enough.
QB is the only position where lack of depth can easily ruin an entire season. AU will probably be fine with three QBs, but a little bad luck could make next season a wash. Why take the risk with the most important position on the team? What happens if one QB has a season ending injury in spring practice and another QB has a season ending injury in the first game of the season? You could find your entire season on the shoulders of a 3rd string QB, which very rarely turns out well.
I read a quote from J. Winston (the top QB in this year’s class) about how Auburn would surely be in his top 3, but they stopped recruiting him awhile back. There is likely more to the story, but it falls in line with my Chiz 3 QB theory.
Thanks for the SI.com article and it does makes good points. It further supports Chizik’s decision to hire an OC who can develop QBs because the number of naturally great QBs is small.
I completly understand your point and agree with you
It’s just that there are not any quality QBs out there other than Winston.
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
I disagree about QB depth.
Rare indeed is school that carries more than 3 on scholarship. You can only put one of the field at a time, it’s hard to switch back-and-forth during a game, and the learning curve is pretty steep.
Plus, consider the quality of the recruits you can get. An SEC-caliber QB will want to start. If there are 4 QBs on the roster, your average QB will only start 1 year – only 1 in 4 on average will start 2 years, if everybody stays 5 years. You won’t keep top QBs riding the pine when they could be starting elsewhere, even a lesser school.
Even more importantly, recruiting multiple QBs in one class usually means that one of the recruits will never be more than a backup.
Going 4-deep at one position is rare. There are 24 positions including kickers, so 4-deep everwhere is 96 players – 10 over the limit. RBs and WRs get hurt, linemen take a long time to develop, and lots of recruits (even highly-touted ones) may not translate to the next level.
QB scholarships are the most important ones that get awarded and must be scouted with utmost care. It’s the most important position on the field, but I think it’s prudent to have three on scholarship and only walk-ons behind them.
by first and thom on Jan 27, 2012 3:22 PM CST up reply actions
The more prudent thing is to have a player on the roster who plays another position
ready to step under center if necessary. Re:Tom Matte-Baltimore Colts
Really showing my age with that one.

All good points.
I understand that most schools, not just Auburn, only have 3 QBs on scholarship. Personally, I would never take that approach as a coach given the potential consequences of one horrible season. They obviously know (a lot) more about coaching strategy than I do.
The strategy for signing QB recruits is apparently different from other positions in that fewer are signed, in part because fewer are available. Signing two top-tier QB recruits in the same year or in back-to-back years is almost impossible for the reasons stated above. But why take the strategy of only recruiting one QB each year when at least one in two recruits (at any position) doesn’t pan out?
Currently, whether Auburn competes for a championship over the next 2-3 years depends on three recruits. Adding a fourth seems like better odds to me. Anyway, I’ll probably never accept the 3-qb approach, but I do understand the reasoning.
I see why Auburn would want another QB recruit...
…but why would that QB recruit want Auburn? There is a true sophomore with playing experience and a touted true freshman coming in.
It’d be great if kids would just sign up and play at Auburn because they wanted to, but a QB who is good enough to play is going to find a place to play, even if it means setting rooting interests aside.
If you stock up on linemen, you can get them meaningful snaps in pressure situations. You can rotate every other position, but rotating QB is all kinds of complicated. A good starter, a trusty backup, and a development project. Auburn’s skill players are good enough that at least some will have played QB in high school to step in if needed.

I've been looking for some record of uat's publication...
that shows the baggers actually did at one point claim 6 NC’s in ’83 which would put them at 9 now instead of the exaggerated claim of 14.
I know their claims have been hashed and rehashed on TET, but I find it funny and sad at the same time that an ENTIRE school, administration, AND fanbase have this level of a behavioral and personality disorder. I mean NO ONE has any shred of morality to say “hey guys we did not really accomplish this and it is a lie and disingenuous to make such claims.” Even when it is in their OWN RECORDS??? I mean…really?!?!
An ENTIRE group of people with a narcissistic/antisocial personality disorder??? Has to be some type of sick world record in the Guinness Book, but don’t tell them that or that could further delude themselves into #15!

The vast majority,IMO, know that 14 is an exaggerated #. Most would prefer to make it an accurate #. However, we use the # 14 since it used by the university. Would it not be annoying if every person used their opinion of NC’s when they wrote/talked? We are not all dumbasses, good sir.
