So Long Mike Dyer...

According to a published report (subscription site), Michael Dyer has indicated he plans to transfer to Arkansas State next season. This is the same school where former Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn is now the head coach.

Dyer leaves the Auburn program ranked 10th all time in rushing yards, and is probably best remembered as the player that broke Bo Jackson's rookie rushing record. Dyer leaving Auburn will not be a factor in next season's RB corp, as many as three or four new faces will highlight the backfield in 2012.

This hasn't been confirmed yet by anybody from AU

Just throwing that out there. If this does turn out to be true though, then oh well. Honestly I’m sick of this being dragged out anyways. If he wants to be back on the team then he needs to quietly do what he needs to do. If he is going to be a diva, then I’d rather him just go and let us move on.

Wow...

I have heard of stupidity… but this is about as dumb as it comes. He will have to for go next year. Right?? Good luck getting in the NFL….

If you are right KB, AU will be better off in the long run. But I can’t say the same for Mike Dyer. Wow. I had a lot of respect for the kid. I was there at the UGA game when he passed BO’s record and Bo acknowledged him.

I guess the conversation with Chizik didn’t go very well. ?? Wonder if “hero” Malzahn according to some readers swayed his opinion against Auburn?

Best of luck Mike. I guess you really will try anything.

Hey TJ Yeldon…. wanna play ball for us???

Whoa! Unless anyone

actually knows (as in first hand knowledge) the circumstances that lead to Dyer making this decision, lets hold the Judgey McJudgersons…….

He’s still a kid. Again, we don’t know the motives that lead him to this decision. Auburn is going to be fine without him…it’s just a bummer. Personally, I wish Mr. Dyer the very best and all the luck with his future endeavors. War Eagle!

KB, where did you find this report? I can’t find anything about this anywhere I’ve checked (which admittedly isn’t much).

Whoa

How about we hold up all the rumors until this is confirmed by an actual source and not some website called the national football authority which I have never heard of until today.

I think this hurts.

Hey, as a UGA fan, I know what it’s like when there’s a good RB who needs to find another home. No matter who comes in behind him, no matter how much trouble he caused, it hurts to lose good players. I believe in addition by subtraction, but usually the payoff is delayed and the costs have to be paid up front. And neither Caleb King nor Washaun Ealey was as good as Dyer.

The guys already on the team are plenty good (to say nothing of who’s coming in), and I bet you’ll be fine. But it stinks to see a kid with talent leave a good situation for a worse one.

If true

see ya! There were Auburn players before you and there will be Auburn players after you.

It's being reported by Phillip Marshall...

There are conflicting reports right now. An Arkansas site is saying the story is premature and that Dyer and his family want to meet with Chizik first. Phillip is pretty accurate in his reporting. You can bet he has a solid source. I hope for once he’s wrong.

by Jay Coulter on Jan 4, 2012 5:21 PM CST reply actions

I have great respect for Phillip Marshall...

he was one of the first avid bloggers I started following on AL.com years ago.

If he said it… unless Mr. Dyer changes his mind and swallows his pride… you can count the man gone.

All I can say is for those doomsayers who are screaming the sky is falling over this news… and calling the rest of us negative nancy…. just remember:

Onterio McCalleb
Trey Mason
Cory Grant
Mike Blakely

Not to mention incoming freshman Javon Robinson.

AU will survive. Heck, we aren’t called Running Back U because of one guy turns into a prima donna.

My only message to Dyer is – get over yourself Mike and see the light before it is too late for you… regardless if you return to AU or not. This is a stupid move. And one you will regret. But I wish you the best of luck… but if you leave I doubt we EVER hear anything more about you. How many Brandon Jacobs are there in the world??

than good luck to you Dyer, but I hope you can get your attitude right or you may endup missing out on some opportunities down the line.

Yes,this hurts.

….no, it does not leave the running back cupboard bare. But Dyer was the total package, knew the protections, and knows SEC defenses and how they close and tackle. A rookie is not going to be as good right out of the gate next fall.

…..Of course, I could see McCalebb gearing up for a superstar year.

…..I won’t pretend to know the situation that brought about Dyer leaving, and am not going to speculate. I do sincerely hope the young man prospers in life going forward, regardless of what happened. War Eagle.

Talk about a difference in two articles...

There’s the one on Trotter, and then Dyer leaving. What a shame if it does turn out to be true.

he has requested his release. Oh well. So long, Mike.

Let me say this...

I feel it is my responsibility to let you guys know, when there are published reports about Auburn and it’s athletes. If this turns out to be false, then so be it. If Phillip Marshall tells you something, and it turns out to be false, so be it.

I am doing what I believe to be the right thing here.

24/7 sports is reporting that Dyer is seeking a release from Auburn. It is a paid members article, therefore, I can not divulge anything other than the title of the post.

We will have to wait and see, if this is all true. The fact still remains, that this had been published, and then I brought to your attention as quickly as I could.

Here is what I'm getting as of 7:30 Central time

Officially nothing has happened. Dyer can not file paperwork with Arky State until he files for and receives transfer from AU.
Officially he hasn’t done that yet. Quite understandably there has not been much time if he indeed has met with Coach Chizik today, or yesterday even.
When and if those release papers are filed, someone will find out about it. When that occurs, it won’t matter where Dyer goes, he just can’t stay here.
I want to wish Mike the best, whatever his decision. From all indications, he will be leaving Auburn.

As the coach says....Not so fast my friend

1-Chiziks doghouse is easy to get in and hard to get out of as it should be
2-If the infraction and attitude rumors are true AU is better off
3-At the level of competion he will play against at Arky St. he will put up monster rushing numbers and get some NFL attention anyway
4-He followed Gus to AU, why not to Arky St. I think Gus had nothing to do with swaying him
5-He can sit out his redshirt year and still have 2 years playing time
5-We have enough running backs to not miss him…see Chik bowl stat to confirm.

The bottom line here is we all knew this was a strong possiblility and is not a stupid move for Dyer. He obviously was a square peg in a round hole if the rumors are true and after this I think they were. He will be a superstar at Arky St. and I wish him well.

Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?

And now this from Jay G. Tate of HABOTN...
We have received word that RB Mike Dyer has voiced (to Auburn) his desire to transfer to Arkansas State. I can’t confirm where the sophomore tailback is located or if he has enrolled at ASU, but he has told at least two Auburn officials that he’s planning to transfer.

That backs up much of what I posted tonight.

Gus and Dyer

I am still stuck at why Gus would take a $600,000 pay cut to coach at Arky State. It is also hard for be to think he would object very much to having Dyer follow him to Arky. I hope that the real story comes out one day, as I am of the opinion there is a whole lot that is going on that we do not know!

by plains74 on Jan 4, 2012 7:55 PM CST reply actions

He is taking a pure cash cut, but in his deal

He is getting house, car and who knows what all that will put him at the $1.3 he made with us. I’ll look for the article where I got this info and try to link it.

by tab0017 on Jan 4, 2012 8:06 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

800k is still a lot of money if you can run the whole show and get a raise later

and dominate in your level. Arky St. had a pretty good season this year and could be just as good or better next year. The move totally makes sense for me.
Boil it down to weekly pay. At 1.3 mill he was making aprox. $24k per week. At 800k he will make approx. 17k per week. After taxes that is not much of a drop off when the numbers are that big. My math was quick without a calculator but with a head gig it is very understandable

Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?

2 things

First, for all the hulabaloo about kristi malzahn and that video…isn’t she the one that said “negative” things about dyer in it? He must not have taken offense if he’s considering following the malzahns to arky st.
Second, I thought yeldon was set to enroll for this semester at least when he was commited to AU so he could go thru spring ball. Based on that I assume he is already enrolled at UA and starting classes when they come back from xmas break…this week? If that’s correct then there isn’t any flipping left to be done. I hope I’m wrong and there is still a chance, but doubt he comes anyway.

Either Dyer or Chizik...

should come out and tell the truth on this one. I think it’s Dyer that knows the truth and he think he needs to make a public statement. I for one don’t believe Marshall is reporting something that has no basis. There is something to this story, now let’s let Dyer come out and say what’s really going on here. My guess, he told the coaches he wants out then talked to his folks and they told him to reconsider and that everybody should have a meeting together. Marshall got news he wanted to transfer, but Dyer wanting to have a meeting with Coach Chizik came later. Now, you have nothing but confusion.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

Eligible

Unless I am wrong, if Dyer transfers to another 1A school, he has to sit out next year; corrrect?

I hope he stays because we need each other. Best scenario, he gets his “stuff” together, has a great ’12; then goes pro. The other option, transferring; sitting out ’12; playing one yr @ Ark State, then going pro is going to cost him millions.

Just my opinion.

Don't know the answer...

But a friend of mine said if you go to a different division… you don’t have to wait a year.

It would be interesting for those in the know to update this thought.

You’re right. If he transfers to an FCS school, he can play immediately. If he transfers to Ark State, the only way he is immediately eligible is if he gets some kind of waiver from the NCAA.
