Gene Chizik is keeping a sharp eye out for the best Coordinators

BY now you all know that Former Walk-on Florida Gator quarterback Kerwin Bell has emerged as the leading candidate in Auburn's search for an Offensive Coordinator.

There is no real news so far as to where Chizik is looking for Defensive Coordinator.

There is also news that W#ill Latu the 4 star JUCO offensive tackle that had previously verbally committed to Auburn has run into some issues. Of the exact nature we are currently unable to confirm. Rivals.com still lists Latu as an Auburn verbal. We will keep an eye on this as well.

Let's talk about it...

Here is some news about Latu..
Latu has re-opened his recruiting after a poor academic semester in the fall left him unable to qualify to enroll at Auburn, where he had verbally committed in July, in time to join the team for the summer workouts.

Story HERE.

oh...

that would explain it. I haven’t looked at the comments there in a bit.

My biggest concern in all this is the toll it could take on our recruiting.

by deep blue on Jan 7, 2012 8:49 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, but if you look to the left and right in the SEC, there are several other teams filling coordinator slots…granted, we are filling both. But for those teams also looking for coordinators they can’t really use that against us in the recruiting game (I mean they can, but it’s a bunch of rocks and a glass house kinda thing…).

Maybe...maybe not

I don’t agree with you on that statement, but let’s say you’re right. However, Malzahn proved that coordinators can get players a school might not normally get. So, while one recruit might not have left because of the searches, no one has come to Auburn either since the searches started.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

I'll bring Acid's comments here from the other thread......

To Acid, Bell reminds him a lot of:

…..of Bobby Petrino, scheme-wise. No, he doesn’t have the beady eyes. But he does play to what his players can actually do. You’re gonna run the toss sweep, and the five yard hitch very well. Make the opponent defend both. Then things branch out in other areas, when a team is stretched out over the field on basic plays.

Acid’s comment was the first to really get me excited about the possibility of Bell coming. I LOVED Petrino’s schemes, didn’t like the character of Petrino…According to Bell’s wiki page, he was QB at Florida (I believe during the Spurrier years), he played in the NFL, Canadian and arena league for 14 years. He coached high school ball for a couple of years before joining Jacksonville U in Florida (NOT to be confused with Jack St in AL)…….

Unlike many names out there...

….We’ve got the guys on campus already to run Bell’s schemes. He’s my top pick based on the “media” candidates. You know, Gene and Kerwin were both walkons at Florida in the mid-80s together. Meanwhile… I was blowing up Eagles West Apts in Auburn with my Strat, and learning about BBQ at Countrys at that time!

I keep hearing Ron Cooper from LSU for DC. Any ideas? Views?

I’ve heard that it’s the DE coach at FSU…if that’s the case, it would be better than snagging Cooper. Some feel that Cooper has benefited from unbelievable talent…you know the player’s with natural instincts-the stuff you can’t coach…..

There is a coaching search website, something like the coaching search ticker or something like that…..it covers rumors and the real deals, so there is some sifting and interpretation involved…..but the author is usually honest about the ’rumor’s vs credible sources…

Two leading names on the DC search are Ron Cooper of LSU, and Greg Hudson of FSU...

Cooper is a great recruiter, as well as coach. He has coached Patrick Peterson, Honey Badger and the like. Anybody have any doubts about LSU’s defensive backfield? That is why Cooper is a sought after guy.
Now Hudson coaches linebackers at FSU. He is also a great recruiter. Either of these two are really great hires if Chizik can pull it off.
I have even heard that Ron Zook has been mentioned, but I wouldn’t think Zook would go back to a coordinator position

none of my cable channels...

….have the NFL tonight, although I’m glad to hear that Fairley is making noise. I think the ain’ts could win it all, but they have to limit the big defensive plays. They have to go through the Lions, then a tough 49er D, then the Packers. And then the Stupor Bowl in Feb. WIn ‘em all, and they’ll be legends. Don’t think it will happen…

…..I’m thinking Ron Cooper would be OK, if he’d come. You’d have to like a guy who’s worked under Jon Chavis. I probably won’t make it to Chas and co. on SNL. I’m busy contemplating a new toy for my PVC keyboard rack (no, I am NOT a good keyboard player, yes I LOVE fooling with them!)

And a QB who can manage a game and has some confidence.
im sick of the goofy spread, GET BACK 2 AUBURN FOOTBALL PLEASE.
BE PHYSICALLLLLL HIT SOMEBODY.
saban, miles, patrino(guys brilliant and makes his system work) will eat up the spread just like they have been. the last 4 years we beat all them once.

by lakeshow24 on Jan 8, 2012 9:15 AM CST reply actions

Thats the task ahead of us

If you want to beat Bama and LSU, you can’t out-finesse them or out-run them. You have to out-scheme and out- execute them.

What makes the SEC so dominant is the size and speed of the d-line on the best teams. Every team in the SEC has good speed on the edge. 5’8"-6’ speed guys are a dime a dozen. What makes Bama and LSU so good is that they have 6’4+ 320lb guys in the middle of the line, who make it impossible to run inside and blow up the pocket with an inside pass rush.
To beat them you have to wear them down with a punishing inside running game, alternating with a speed attack on the edge. We have the speed guys for this attack, what we are missing is the 220+ lb running back to pound the interior. Once you have that true inside THREAT, it opens up play action, regardless of down. You can play the spread or pro-style with that offense. You aren’t going to dominate these teams up front but you can open up pockets of weakeness on the field as they work to combat the interior attack. This is not to say you want to spend your time beating your head against a brick wall, BUT you have them respect your ability to attack the interior.
Yes, that will decrease scoring as we speed up the game by controlling the clock, but you don’t end up on the wrong end of the stick in the 4th Qtr with a dog tired defense.
On defense it will be really hard to get the same amount of big athletes that LSU and Bama get on the line BUT we can develop them over time, so its important to recruit D-Line depth with large framed guys that can add weight over their career and be starters in the junior and senior season. That way when they are losing their stars in their junior year, our guys will be starting to blossom. We have to CONTINUALLY be starting Juniors and Seniors on the D Line, except in the rare occasion when we get a Tracy Rocker or Nick Fairley ……and hopefully Gabe Wright…. who can come in an contribute immediately.

We have a big guy

Ladarius Phillips is big and fast and agile, 6’ – 290! His high school clips show a great tailback who ran over, around and through the line with great agility like Cam it is amazing that we have not used him to run. I saw a guy yesterday same size play tailback and he was great, we sould use Phillips!

by AUTo on Jan 8, 2012 11:49 AM CST up reply actions

It would be great if he turned into that guy.....

But I haven’t seen much in the way of toughness when he has played. Bottom line is he didn’t perform when he was asked to open holes as a blocking back. In fact he was bowled over on more than one occasion on short yardage situations that were blown up in our faces.
Right now, he is taking up a scholly that we could use on a real fullback Of course everybody can change with a little maturity. Maybe next year will be the year for Phillips to show that toughness.

Kerwin Bell played in the mid 1980s under Galen Hall

I went to the 1986 game in Gainesville when Kerwin Bell brought UF back to win 18-17…that was, looking back, a pretty key defeat as Auburn would have been in line for the Sugar Bowl that year and might have even been matched up with Penn State or Miami had they been 10-1 in the regular season. Instead LSU went to the Sugar Bowl due to only 1 conference loss. That was another one of Pat Dye’s really good teams that found a way to lose a key game that kept them out of the National Championship picture.

Don't know much about Bell as a coach...

but he was a crafty and resourceful player that got Florida started onto their era of domination.
He was a winner.

I was at that game too

We had a 17-0 lead going into the 4th quarter. Bell comes off the bench (he was injured) and leads his team to victory. He even hobbled in the two-point conversion for the win close to the end of the 4th. He is a winner. I know nothing about him lately.

The way I understand it...

Rocker will not be back at Auburn as long as Chizik is there. I’m not saying either one of them is wrong, they just didn’t get along from what I’ve learned. I could be way off on that one, and by no means do I mean it as an indictment for either individual.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

by Sparkey on Jan 8, 2012 12:29 PM CST up reply actions

Now where did you hear that?

Why is it that everybody that has left….for a better opportunity, no less….has a “beef” with Chizik?

I have heard all kinds of rumors and I have never heard anything about Rocker and Chiizk having irreconcilable differences…in fact I haven’t heard of any differences.

The mere fact that you would bring up that they won’t work together again is an indictment of Chizik as being inflexible and hard to work with. There is no evidence of that being the case at all other than the well known difference in philosophy beween Chizik and the coordinators regarding defensive philosophy…..in all its facets. WHICH WAS WARRENTED, I might add.

I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.

Would it have been better had I said Rocker is the problem? I don’t know what the problem is, I was simply saying that’s what I’ve heard. Damn man, it’s not that big of a deal.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

by Sparkey on Jan 8, 2012 1:40 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not offended but

You are spreading unfounded rumors Sparks. There are other people like you who are really upset about the fact that Chiz hasn’t hired a coordinator and hearing all kinds of BS about why that is., So its not fair to Chiz to spread more rumors about him that he is difficult to work with. I know thats not your intention but thats what you did. If you are going to say something like that you should say where you heard it so that people know if it has any credence or not.
I hear stuff ALL the time from friends who heard this that or the other and its almost never true. You of all people should know that.

I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.

Eguae is too slow

and it showed this year. Not sure he ever was or will be a force. He is a great leader though. As underwhelming as Eguae was this year, K. Carter was the most disappointing. I expected Carter to be the best DT, but he was by far the worst of the group.

I’m hoping they bring in a DC who is a great DB coach. I’ve never believed in Lolley because DB play has been the weakness of the whole team since Chiz arrived. Of course, we could use a good LB coach too…

by B_B on Jan 8, 2012 1:05 PM CST up reply actions

Yes there was a reason he was removed from the field to be an office coach under who, Tubs. Kinda like the Bowden brother in law was it hienze that got moved around ever year at AU then went to Clemson with them and then when he made the round again to

To every position he finally got fired again because he could not coach. Lolly about the same and the guy from NC may be a good recruiter but he is not much of a defensive back coach either.

by AUTo on Jan 8, 2012 1:42 PM CST up reply actions

I really really would like to know...

What the hell Lolley is doing around the football field again? I don’t like his coaching and I’ve always thought he was a weak spot at Auburn. Maybe that’s unfair, but until I see other wise I’ll continue to think that way. Every time we’ve seen Lolley at a coaching position at Auburn, whatever aspect of the team he’s coaching instantly becomes a problem spot for the team. Maybe that’s just a coincidence, but after a while, you really begin to wonder.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

by Sparkey on Jan 8, 2012 1:57 PM CST up reply actions

I'll stand up for him.

….Corner play was not as big a problem this year as many other defensive areas, pretty much the entire front seven. Yes, LSU exploited a few greenie mistakes. But mostly, our corners have done the job on staying with guys, jamming them at the line, and making tackles. Chris Davis led the team in the bowl game in tackles, and freshman Jonathan Mincy did well, too. Once T-Bell got hurt, every corner was a first or second year player. Lolley did pretty well coaching ’em up, particularly considering we had a pretty anemic pass rush when the other team doubled Lemonier.

At UGA...

…..We got Charles or Bennett on a safety, and in the 2nd half, just run over. No, the corners didn’t handle the back shoulder fades well, but they made the tackle after. That wasn’t what beat us. Getting mauled up front did…

......Drowning in cool elixir.

by Acid Reign on Jan 8, 2012 7:22 PM CST up reply actions

Mauled was a big problem...

But the body of work for DBs in the last 3 years has not been good. Did we get lucky in 3 games and we actually looked back and intercepted a few passes, I think Chezik got involved there to coach them up, but then it was right back to watch them run past us, chase and watch them catch it and never look back.
Chezik the DC taught them well, but every since that time muschimp and others have taught the pro way, see above. I watched 5 or 6 TD passes today in pro games playing the pro way, let them run past, watch them catch and try to swat out of hands or tackle. Mauling on line has nothing to do with that sorry excuse for DB coaching. DB 101 do not let them get behind you look back and make the cut for INT. It works so much better than watching someone catch it to their advantage, at leat put up a fight, Our problem with DBs is coaching.
