The Choice is Clear Tonight
I have many close Alabama friends. I know more than a dozen who are in New Orleans right now. Why do so many of them feel obligated to ask who I'm pulling for tonight? In their heart of hearts, do they honestly believe I could even remotely pull for Alabama?
Let's review: Their fanbase has poisoned our trees; they've spent a year trying to ruin Cam Newton and takeaway Auburn's national title; and they continue to recruit in ways that would make the Corleone's proud.
Yeah, I want Alabama to bring home the state's third consecutive national title in the same way I want another colonoscopy. You should feel the same way. If not, then get some help.
While many in our state are gearing up for tonight's BCS National Championship Game, the same can't be said for the rest of the country. Maybe it's SEC fatigue or the fact that Alabama and LSU have already met once this season; but from a national standpoint, build up for tonight's contest has been lacking to say the least.
The same can be said for the entire bowl season. Not in my lifetime have I seen stadiums more empty for the big bowl games. Fans are subjected to two weeks of horrible contests that drip nightly like Chinese water torture and then the New Year's games are all played at the same time. When will this lunacy stop?
Word came down late last night that Auburn tight-end Phillip Lutzenkirchen is returning for his senior season. Most thought that he would return, but you never know when a player will have a Darvin Adams moment and throw everything away. Auburn will be much improved just having him on the field.
The wait continues on Auburn's search for new offensive and defensive coordinators. The latest name to surface is Houston co-offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. He was the play caller for Houston's offense this season and is a former All-American quarterback at Texas Tech.
Other names that have surfaced on the offensive side of the ball include: Kerwin Bell (Jacksonville U. head coach); Scott Loeffler (Temple offensive coordinator); and Blake Anderson (North Carolina offensive coordinator).
Bell is an interesting candidate. The former Florida quarterback was a fellow walk-on with Chizik at Gainesville and they remain close friends today. Bell finished 6-4 this season, but claimed the Pioneer League title in 2008. As head coach, he calls all of the offensive plays for the Dolphins.
On the defensive side, the hot rumored name is Ron Zook, the former Florida and Illinois head coach. As with all of these names, they are just rumors. Other mentioned candidates include: Ron Cooper (LSU secondary coach); and Randy Shannon (former Miami head coach).
While Auburn running back Michael Dyer's fate has been decided, the debate continues to rage. Kudos to Gene Chizik for making the decision to part ways with his star. While there are a million rumors floating around about his crime, what we do know is it had nothing to do with grades.
All-SEC running backs don't leave programs because of bad grades. Chizik needed to send a clear message to his young and talent-laden team that there's a right way and wrong way to do things. For all his immense talent and accomplishments, his downside far outweighed what he did on Saturday afternoons.
Auburn will be better off in the long run. Can the same be said for Michael Dyer?
It's beginning to look like Auburn is the Bermuda Triangle of basketball coaching jobs. While it's too early to write off Tony Barbee, the opening act has been deeply disappointing. Auburn was pounded in its SEC opener Saturday at Vanderbilt 65-35. It was the Tigers lowest point total since 1951 when there was no shot clock.
"For whatever reason, the guys who were supposed to be catalysts and difference-makers on this team, they're making a difference in the wrong way," Barbee said. "They're making a difference in us losing because they're not producing anything."
With a $92 million arena to pay for, you can bet Barbee's leash is much shorter than what previous Auburn coaches have faced. While I'm not suggesting his job's in jeopardy yet, he better turn things around in a hurry. Judging from the last two games, that doesn't seem likely now.

We got this.
Alabama fans, ask yourself this question: Is this who you want representing your University and your fanbase?

Thank you, Jay
I’ve got a co-worker trying to convince me that there’s some hierarchy, whereby one “pulls for one’s state”.
Uh, no. Never.
You said everything there is to say, as far as reasons not to. Anyone on the fence need only go back and look at last week’s thread on RBR for the Chik-Fil-A Bowl. Even when it wasn’t a national championship, those folks were spewing the same level of vitriol and verbal offal that they were a year ago at this time.
I always root for chaos in football. Now I’m rooting for Coach Chaos himself. Works for me.
"The ball will be spotted at the six-inch-yardline."
You know...
You put it pretty perfectly. I HATE pulling for LSU. I can’t do it, but I can’t pull for Bama either. I hope they beat each other so badly they never score a point and they finish at zero and everybody gets so angry Okie State is given the championship to get back at the SEC for having both teams in the National Championship game. The crappy people at RBR are pathetic and pitiful. That’s not everyone there, though. There are many good ones at RBR, but the bad ones are so loud and crappy it’s hard not to only recognize them.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Barbee
If Auburn fires Barbee in the next two years, they might as well close the entire program. The Arena isn’t a magical cure. Some of us will actually have to start supporting the dadgum team
/endrant
Sometimes I tweet: @jmjonesjr
The administration knew
the arena wasn’t a cure. Why else would they have built the 11th/13th largest arena in the SEC? Ole Miss is the only SEC school with fewer seats.
Just another reason to detest all Bammer fans
Part of my morning ritual is to check out TET. I always look forward to what everyone has to say. After reading this post I was just about to justify in my mind it would be OK if Bammer brought home a 3rd natty to the state. I was not going to pull for them in any form or fashion, just an “oh well” attitude if they won.
The next thing I read, on al.com, totally did away with the need for the cup of coffee I was waking up with. It was a story about Harvey Updyke being on Bourbon St. Bammer fans were asking for autographs and posing for pics and generally fawning over him like he was a rock star. There was even a line written about someone wanting to write a book about him. Bet you won’t see that one on the shelf at J & M.
It was then my whole attitude changed. No more “oh well”. Now I want LSU to beat them so bad it will rewrite the record books. I want to see the crimson wearing turds leaving the game in the third quarter. I want the band to forget the formation, the cheerleaders to forget the cheers, Saban to get nailed on the sideline on a sweep by Richardson, and Big Al to get his d***, um trunk stepped on by the Honey Badger.
I have 2 employees who are Bammers and am considering firing them.
Another thought, how the hell did someone supposedly destitute come up with the dough to go to NOLA and get a ticket to the game.
If I did not hate Bammers enough before, I sure do now. I may not need another cup of coffee for a week.
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?

I want Les Miles to out-coach Nick Saban so hard, that when the game is over, Nicky is found walking disoriented and wondering were his pants are down Bourbon Street….

Why's that a reason to "detest all Bammer fans"?
Look at RBR’s response to the Harvey love. You do know the difference between “some” and “all,” right?
Where are all the Auburn fans wearing LSU gear..
You will not find them because we have class… But I do not know 1, know not one pulling for Bama, including me. If they lose they have venom for Auburn and if they win they are still venomous for AU. They are obsessed with Auburn because they have an inferiority complex. If you are so great you keep your mouth shut and let your play speak for itself. Go LSU and War eagle!

The picture is funny!
And the sentiment is there… because it’s true. Bama has the most vindictive fan base in college football.
That said… let’s agree to call today BLACK MONDAY? Can I get a majority vote on that??
Any time bama is in the NC title game… and we aren’t even close… I feel that way. And needless to say I have felt that way many, many times as a life long Auburn fan.
God forgive me… but I cannot stand anything crimson. To go one more step further than Jay… not only do I have friends that are bama fans… but the majority of my family are too. And I mean my greater family… and let me tell you, over the years there have been major battles fought over the game that happens after Thanksgiving. I HATE BAMA. Make no mistake.
Knowing all this, to say that I hoped bama would lose tonight is really something that probably needs to go unsaid. No division title. No conference title. No National title. It’s almost perfect…. I almost said if we are lucky. But luck isn’t exactly anything to bank on. Because if we depend on luck.. bama will take home #14 tonight.
These same folks will argue 42-14 whipping we took at home. They will revel in TJ Yeldon (Kuwanjo and Caldwell) and their continued recruiting titles. The fact that AU did so poorly during the course of the regular season. That our ‘situation’ and program is not stable and point to the departure of Mike Dyer as the compelling evidence. And while the coordinator issue plagues them too – they will conclude that AU’s future isn’t as bright as theirs.
They might be right. But ultimately none of it matters.
The beautiful thing is that no matter what happens – the game still has to be played on the field. And because of that… AU always has a chance.
I don’t know if AU will ever be a powerhouse in the SEC. It’s a perpetual wish/prayer. Regardless of where we are… I am content/blessed to be an AU fan/alumni.
War Eagle!!

pulling for neither
I’ll watch it because I want to see the game, but I just don’t care who wins. Then again, I no longer live in Alabama, so I get off easy. My prediction is that LSU will not pull it off twice in the same season. When has that team ever gone undefeated? (someone will probably tell me now)
As Auburn fans, I hope yall can separate the Harvey Updykes of the world from the rest. What he did was truly despicable and Bourbon Street drunken photo ops are not a real endorsement of poisoning trees.

IT'S ON!!!!!! GEAUX TIGERS!!!!!
I am so ready for tonight! I want the LSU Tigers to come out and dominate and not look back.
Here’s what I’m tired of hearing: Bama left 12 points on the field; they were the better team in November; they should handily win tonight.
OH REALLY??!!!! Last time I checked, the team that scores more points than the other team is the better team. Not even bammers can rewrite that rule. And let’s say that the Alabama special teams actually made those 12 points, and that one TD pass wasn’t intercepted-do we know how LSU would have responded? Do you really think that those points would have gone unanswered? It’s hard to know isn’t it. But it doesn’t matter, because LSU got the job done, while Bama decidedly didn’t at home.
The Bayou Bengals have largely been disrespected in deference to the Tide. I’m expecting them to come out and shut down the Crimson and White love fest.

Geaux Tigers!!!!

Barbee
Hey we gave Tommy Joe Eagles 3 or 4 years. I will give that to Barbee in a heartbeat. That said can anyone on this team shoot the ball? I have never seen a poorer shooting team in a major conference. Chubb should be told dunk the ball or pass it. I am told help is on the way with the latest recruiting class. I hope so.

Okay gonna have to blow my horn on this one...
KLIFF KINGSBURY!!! Who on this site mentioned him FIRST? Who was it? Who’s been saying he’d be the best offensive coordinator Auburn could get before Coach Malzahn had actually left?!?!? There’s been one guy screaming for him and Phillip Montgomery the ENTIRE TIME!!! And now, they’ve been contacted! Furthermore, it seems as though Ron Cooper is the number one defensive candidate for Auburn right now…Hmmm…who’s been saying that the whole time??? Guys if we get Kliff Kingsbury and Ron Cooper I’ll NEVER SHUT UP!!! Part of me for you guys’ sake hopes they aren’t both hired, because you guys will never hear the end of it if they are. Anyway, we hire both these guys somebody needs to go get a drink with me and celebrate the Auburn greatness that is coming for the next 3-4 years at Auburn. You will be getting a national championship very soon folks if both those guys are hired. Write it down, take a picture, sculpt it into stone, send an email to yourself, print it out in color and black & white, get a tattoo of it and whatever else you can do to record it. War Eagle!!!
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
If we hire those guys....
You are going to have to apply for membership to the Shiny Happy People club. NO MORE GRIPING!! You’re going to have to defend them no matter how bad they suck!! LOL!
I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.
I will not need to defend them...
Their record will defend itself.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
By the way...
You also avoided giving me any credit on picking these guys and now they’re popping up as top candidates for the Auburn coordinating positions.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
If those guys end up being our co-ordinators....
I will award you the coveted Shiny Happy Crystal Ball Award and Bejeweled Sceptor of Optimism!!
I’ll definitely give you credit for banging the drum for Cooper, long and hard. I don’t remember the Kingsbury shout out, but you’ve thrown out a bunch so its hard to keep track. What has been most impressive is that you have been aware of so many candidates. I haven’t had a clue about most of the guys they would be looking at. Zook was the only one I thought that would be nice to have on staff…..but not as a DC…. as the newly appointed Recruiting Coordinator! I know that position doesn’t exist, but give the importance of recruiting, shouldn’t it?
I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.
Why must you constantly do this, Sparkey?

If Auburn fires Barbee...
after two years when the program has improved already they’re never going to get any better. We give Lebo five years and then people have the audacity to say that Barbee needs a short leash?!!?!? That thought makes me want to puke. Lebo gets five years and there are grumblings about Barbee half way into his second season? Seriously?!?!? I am absolutely shocked if people are serious about firing Barbee.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
I am of a mind that if...
Barbee can’t get it done… then we need to say that the arena is another indoor practice facility for the football and baseball program. Like someone else said… close the entire program once/if they fire him.
As far as I am concern… the program has sucked so bad for so long that we really haven’t had a basketball program since Barkely and Pearson. But I was gone for a lot (and football is more my thing) so I might have missed a few years. But I don’t recall us going to many more NCAA tournaments since?
Give the man as long as he needs. But if he can’t get it done… SHUT HER DOWN!

Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?
An excerpt from al.com
At Georgia, the Bulldogs posted a 42-10 record over his four seasons. In his last season at Georgia in 2004, the 10-2 Bulldogs and seventh ranked team in the nation produced a defense that ranked eighth overall and ninth in scoring defense. VanGorder’s 2003 defensive unit finished third nationally in scoring defense, fourth in total defense, and sixth in passing defense.
In 2002, UGA’s stout defense allowed only 31 points during the final seven games, propelling the Bulldogs to a Sugar Bowl win over Florida State.
Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?

As I understand it, the final BCS poll is released before the bowl games. The winner of the NC game gets the BCS trophy. Once they have the 1 vs 2 match up set (since that is all it is designed to do), there is no need for a final BCS poll after the NC game. The final “polls” released are the coaches poll and the AP poll.
