Willie Martinez New Auburn Defensive Coach?

The media is reporting that Willie Martinez may be named Auburn's newest assistant coach in a move that would reunite him with defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder while bringing the former Georgia assistant back to the SEC.

Martinez would be the third assistant hired with SEC experience this offseason.

The university has not formally announced the hiring, but (according to Charles Goldberg) Martinez was in Auburn Monday meeting with coaches.

UPDATE: It's official!!!

For what it's worth

Willie is no longer listed as a coach for the Sooners

His resume is impressive.

But I think most folks want someone more current/relevant. However, Martinez has experience with BVG in other places – namely UGA. I know Sparky wanted the guy at the ATL FALCons but putting 14 people in the NFL isn’t a laughing matter.

I am just wondering how he does at recruiting.

Martinez should be better than Lolley. I might be better than Lolley…so there’s that……

Results are what matters...

And I think we will see them.

Please, please bring back the old Totm… and give the tin hat back to Sparkey.

;)

But now that you mention it… how are you at recruiting?

On recruiting.

So far all of my students in my lab are turning out to have good hands at the bench and are great students and are just awesome people…so I might not be so bad at recruiting……It also seems that one of my emerging skillz is motivating and cheerleading. Additionally, I can light a fire under someone’s ass faster than most people can find lighter fluid and matches. I have NO problem going to bat for my peeps. I don’t fear knocking on the doors of higher up’s if I have a legitimate need. And I seem to be able to get things done without resorting to squeaky wheel tactics (so far, we have an n of 2 years without much hullabaloo).

How am I doing?? Do I get the job? :)

I'm gonna...

….parse through the stats on Van Gorder and Martinez. I’m wary of this hire, but I may be basing my paranoia on one shaky season by UGA in 2009, and a lot of factors beyond the control of the defensive coordinator. Will expound on this early Thursday morning!

Looking forward to it. Because I am also wary of this hire….

Not a bad hire IMO

The only thing I’m concerned with is the “we’re getting the band back together” mentality.
Sometimes thats a good thing…sometimes not, but since Chizik is the HC and not Mark Richt, I think it will be good. Martinez got a bad rep….and deservedly so….for his work as DC with UGA because of the results in big games, espeecially with all the talent he had at his disposal.
Hopefully he will have a chip on his shoulder when he comes back and will be more focused at making his detractors eat their words. I think that could pay dividends especially in the short term, which is all I want because he won’t be here long regardless. He will either do well and get hired away, or underperform and be replaced.

I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.

The other thing to remember is the length of time Martinez has been at each of his stops....

At least since he has reached the big stage of college ball. We all know Coach Chizik is seeking stability in his staff.

I for one hope that they stay together, and are very successful, because in 2013, Auburn should be poised for great things on the gridiron.

And its not like he went to Akron after UGA

Stoops thought enough of him to put him on his staff and the last time I looked, Oklahoma was a pretty nice program.

Everyone lauded the Vangorder hire

Why not think that if Coach Stache wants him, he is the one we need. I am hanging my hat on that. If BVG thinks Willie is the man for the job, that is good enough for me.

Now that the statue/altar/shrine is up, is it in Sabans contract that he gets to take it with him when he leaves?

I think something is being overlooked...

I think with Willie Martinez there is an appropriate comparison that took place relatively recently at Auburn. I think we all remember Hugh Nall. There’s no denying Nall Ball was awful to watch. The man had Ronnie Brown, Carnell Williams, Brandon Jacobs, and Jason Campbell and yet his offense was pretty bad in 2003. When he was the offensive coordinator, Hugh Nall was one of most inept coaches in the country.

Yet, what happened when Nall moved back to offensive line coach? Maybe some here don’t agree with me, but I thought the offensive line looked great all during 2004. Martinez is not a great defensive coordinator but the man has been top notch as a secondary coach outside of last year with the Sooners. Keep in mind, the year before that his secondary was very solid if not excellent. Van Gorder and Martinez also have great chemistry together. No, Martinez will not be a great defensive coordinator but he will do quite well in my mind as the position coach he was so successful with previously.

Make no mistake Auburn people. We have incredible talent in the secondary coming for the 2012 season. I have total confidence in our defense next year. I’m expecting the defense to be very good for 2012. I’ve never said anything different about defense coming and it’s time to get excited. This will be a hard hitting physical defense we have enjoyed for so long watching Auburn.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

Well truth be told everybody has their picks and chooses...

I have the people I really like. I will defend them as hard as I attack those I don’t like. This is a good hire. Listen folks, I don’t just hate every hire Chizik makes. I loved the Van Gorder Hire. I also loved Taylor, Luper, Rocker, Grimes, and Malzhan. I just never could be happy with Roof or Lolley. I’m sorry, I still think they’re average X’s and O’x coaches at best and I’m being nice there. I love this hire of Willie Martinez. I think it is a huge upgrade from Phillip Lolley. I really hope Van Gorder and Martinez handle the secondary and that they move Thigpen to linebacker with Van Gorder working a good deal with the linebackers and safeties. Thigpen is a very good linebacker coach and you would see immediate improvement if he gets moved from the secondary and safeties to coaching linebackers.

It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

Wow...

Well, I guess I’ve seen it all now ;)

Notice, I didn’t say anything about the offense. Don’t worry, when the offense is the topic again you’ll be yelling at me so loud I will hear you way down here in Alabama.
