Friday Ramblings

In all of the discussions about our conference, and its new members, we have heard opinions from us fans, as well as sportscasters. Seems the politics of it all has brought out the professional politicians, to weigh in on their thoughts and even their efforts to sway membership for their school, into one of the four big conferences

One such case is the West Virginia Mountaineers. United States Senator Joe Manchin tried to lobby membership for WVU into the SEC. He even enlisted the help of his friend Nick Saban.

"I thought we could have been in the SEC," Manchin said. "I talked to my dear friend Nick Saban about that, and, like me, he said, 'I would like West Virginia in the SEC,' and we were working toward that."

That effort proved unsuccessful, though no one talked publicly about it last fall.

"They chose Missouri instead, and then you never heard a thing else about it," Manchin said.

Manchin’s relationship with Saban dates back to the days that the three-time BcS champion coach was an assistant under Frank Cignetti Sr. at WVU in the late-70s. Even the power of persuasion Saban possesses, however, wasn’t enough to get his home-state school into the most powerful football conference in the country.

John Taylor of College Football Talk has an entertaining piece on this story HERE.

TCU Football players involved in drug ring....

In another black eye to college football, a scandal has been evolving in Fort Worth, Texas. This time a drug ring involving at least 17 students, including four football players.

"There are days people want to be a head football coach, but today is not one of those days," coach Gary Patterson said in a prepared statement. "As I heard the news this morning, I was first shocked, then hurt and now I'm mad."

This is from the Star-Telegraph, a Fort Worth paper

The players arrested are linebacker Tanner Brock, the team's leading tackler during the 2010 Rose Bowl season; defensive lineman D.J. Yendrey; offensive tackle Tyler Horn; and safety Devin Johnson, according to affidavits.

Tanner Brock was an honorable mention All-American last season. When he was working one one of his deals with an undercover officer he mentioned that 82 players failed the recent surprise drug test. Whether he was telling the truth or not is anyone's guess.

TCU Police Chief Steven McGee released this statement.

"There is no doubt that all of those arrested today are drug dealers," McGee said at a Wednesday morning news conference. "They sold drugs to undercover officers. They dealt on all levels, to students and nonstudents. They would sell to anyone, but our primary focus was those who were dealing to TCU students."

Bigger is better....

In an informal interview this week, Auburn defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder touched on a few topics that we have been discussing here at TET.

**On wanting bigger linebackers -- starting with middle linebackers -- VanGorder said "bigger is better" though he added he's not a "profile coach."

VanGorder acknowledged that newcomer 6-foot-3, 233-pounder Cassanova McKinzy would fit that mold.
We expect that Willie Martinez will be officially announced as new defensive backs coach at anytime, though it may happen before this goes to post.

there's more after the jump...

Star-divide

An Auburn Legend, finally....

At next month's SEC Championship basketball tournament, an Auburn great will be recognized for his contributions to SEC basketball, and his name rarely appears on most blog posts as an Auburn legend.

Chris Morris will finally get that recognition for his playing days while at Auburn.

Ask anyone who has been Auburn's best round ball players and you will hear names like Barkley, and the Person brothers. You will even hear a mention of Chris Porter, which is usually followed by "such a waste of talent". referring to his off the court antics once he left Auburn.

Morris was a 4 year player at Auburn, from 1984 through 1988. An All-SEC selection his final two years. He was picked 4th in the NBA draft.

Congratulations Chris, and War Eagle!

Comment of the week...

This weeks choice is a statement of angst, against all the conference expansion tearing apart traditional football rivalries. The winner is Audadday with this gem.

Hell with Bama-Lets move EAST

I say the best solution is to be in the East. We play all of our traditional rivals(except Bama). I agree with the previous posts. Who needs Bama. If we stay in the West our schedule will consist of Ark, Miss. St., Ole Miss, LSU, Mizzzou and A&M with the East rotating teams. That does not sound as good to me as UGA, Tenn, Fla, S.C., Vandy, and Kentucky with the West rotating teams. Staying in the West preserves only one traditional rival (Bama) at the expense of all our other true rivals. We recruit primarily in the states of Florida, Georgia and Alabama and I expect most of our fan base is not located west of the Alabama border. Travel would be easier for the fans and the games would be more meaningful. We probably end up playing Bama 5 out of 10 years in the SEC Championship game anyway.

even though Missouri is currently in the Eastern Division, Audaddy gets his point across. AU does not belong in the Western Division.

My Take....

There are so many wrongs perceived in this whole conference expansion subject. We the fans, are overlooking the fact that most Universities must ensure their financial stability first and foremost. I am going to be drawn and quartered for this, but I am in favor of the SEC maintaining it's edge, and subsequent "leg up" on the rest of the college football world, but not at the cost of the other student athletes at each each of our schools.

We are the standard bearer in many sports that are not football, but rely on the financial windfall that our football programs create. I will remind you of the AU swimming and diving teams umpteen consecutive SEC titles, and 7 National titles. That sport could never fund its self. Neither could baseball, basketball, softball, and so on. That is a dilemma that is not solely an Auburn one. Very few basketball programs across the country are self sufficient. I would say that zero of the Olympic sports teams generate enough money to pay for themselves.

Without getting into the entire "student athlete" debate, we still must not overlook the impact that a successful football program has on the entire scope of intercollegiate sports. That success starts with a strong conference. Texas A&M and Missouri ensures that the SEC remains the strongest conference in the country. A stronger SEC, inherently means a stronger Auburn. Isn't that what we all want?

The SEC is going to be fine....

When Missouri challanges for East next year, and TAM beats a couple of West teams on their respective home fields, we will all get with it, not to mention men’s and women’s basketball.

Kool Bell needs to go to grammar class

I am sick of seeing Kol Bell spell the possessive pronoun “its” with an apostrophe. “It is” is property abbreviated “it’s”. Possessive has no apostrophe – “its”. I realize Track Em Tigers is a sports blog, but good writers, and Kool Bell has some really thoughtful columns, need to use proper spelling, grammar and punctuation!!

Quick solution...

It is a shame that football news is so sparse these days...

that we end up talking about the negative side of the sport. TCU’s scandal, if that is what you want to call it, is relatively small. But the thing that is being overlooked… is that it is at a supposedly Christian school. To me, it demonstrates just how great a problem this is…

But before I get on my soap box let me apologize for my rants today. I take this crap pretty seriously. I was too small to play college sports. And I wasn’t smart enough to get a full ride. So my family ended up paying my way through school. You don’t have to guess where I stand on “stipends” or anything else when it comes to getting a free education by playing sports for a university. It’s a privilege. Not a right.

But back to the topic, I don’t think a fan any where can say that their school is above the fray in the use of illegal drugs. It is rampant. And again, I think it is due to the social strata of people that you are recruiting. Use of drugs from where some of these people come from is an escape. The rigors of college life apparently require the same type of release.

http://espn.go.com/dallas/ncf/story/_/id/7583085/five-tcu-horned-frogs-football-players-tested-positive-marijuana-according-report

But the situation at TCU is bigger than just the four that got arrested. If this is any indication it appears to be the tip of the ice berg.

Again… TCU isn’t alone.

Obviously… ‘illegal’ means nothing to some. What is the proper action to take?

If TCU had any gumption at all… it would send these kids packing to make a statement that it will not be tolerated. The likelihood that these folks will stop is slim to none.

But wait, this is a sacred cow isn’t it? The golden cash cow of college football. And TCU just got admitted into the Big XII.

There will be some fans who will argue that this is harmless. It is a bit of college hijinxs… “we all have done it” they will say.

My answer is simple: No. No we haven’t.

Where do we make our stand as a society? Which is more important? At what point has society or from a religious view a Christian done enough to help another? The point I am making there are others who are just as deserving that may not have the physical skills as this person does that doesn’t have the problem.

Pretty tough argument. But If you can’t handle the black and white of the argument… here is another litmus test… is this the kind of kid you want your daughter/son to bring home??

If the answer is no… well the direction to take is clear. Dismiss them. But if the answer is yes… we have more problems than just drugs in sports. Perhaps the cash cow can pay for rehabilitation of these athletes. Well… at least until they say that their rights are being violated.

All I can say… is just like with Mike Dyer (if that is the reason he left Auburn) or any player in the game… you got to take a stand. Do what is right. Do what is expected and be of single purpose and graduate college. Or just don’t waste our collective time and money to come here to play. Because the habits you bring here… will be with you for the rest of your life.

Just ask Whitney Houston.

Obviously… ‘illegal’ means nothing to some. What is the proper action to take?

Legalize it. Tax the &*() out of it. It could be regulated so no spooky stuff gets mixed in. The fact is that MJ does not impair the senses any more or less than alcohol. In moderation, it can be very helpful to those who are suffering side effects from chemo, glycoma, chronic pain. The problem is that kids (and some adults) don’t understand moderation. The other problem is that medical research is just now coming to terms about long-term side effects that debunk the notion(s) that MJ is ‘safer’ than alcohol or other drugs. It’s still a pharmaceutical that you inhale, besides obvious damage to the lungs-the other side effects are more elusive. Bottom line, you can’t play high, just like you can’t play drunk (Well, I mean you can, but you’re not playing at your level best). Honest conversations and education about these things can help. It would be easier if the use of the substance was all out in the open.

Couple of points...

First, not going to argue the merits, or lack thereof, in legalizing MJ. It’s an opinion, and it’s yours.

Second, lets remember, these “kids” that were arrested were not caught using drugs. They were a drug sales ring. BIG difference. That is not to say that some or all of them were not using at all, I don’t know. Having been in some form of law enforcement for nearly 20 years, I can tell you that not all dealers use. Many are smart enough not to. But make no mistake, these are dealers. Drug pushers. Far different animal from a drug addict, or recreational user. They’re looking at prison time. And, they were selling more than just MJ. In fact, they were a major drug ring selling many illegal substances.

by OL_Coach on Feb 17, 2012 10:24 AM CST up reply actions

CHECK THE LINK.

It’s more than selling. It’s using. Urinalysis doesn’t care about intent.

Yes, I read it.

I’m talking about the one’s arrested. They may have a drug problem on the team. Seems like they might. The ones arrested were dismissed from school, and are looking at prison time. Failing a drug test is far different from selling MJ, Cocaine, X, and whatever to undercover agents.

by OL_Coach on Feb 17, 2012 10:31 AM CST up reply actions

Yep.

…..Don’t know how it is in Texas, but in Alabama those convicted under the “drug dealer” tag have pretty long minimum sentences.

…..“Illegal” and “breaking the law” are a matter of degree. Most folks break some law or other regularly. Just drive down your local interstate at the speed limit and see how many cars rocket around you!

What about the ones who come up hot on the pee pee test?

We all know that doesn’t just happen at TCU either. This is happening more and more frequently… and I think normally it is covered by … so and so was given a “1 game suspension for failing to adhere to team rules” or something of that sort.

Is that it? Just suspend them a game?

When is enough truly enough? I mean… we watch them go to the pros and wonder why? Look at a guy like Ricky Williams for instance – a man who had unlimited potential failed to do anything of relevance in the NFL. He had major drug issues there too… what about the guys who are killed around the drug scene?

We reap what we sow.

No, it happens many places.

I imagine each program/school has it’s own policies and protocols. Each case should be handled on a case by case basis. I don’t think there’s any one right way to handle it. Every player and case is different.

he will still much richer than I …. if he managed his money.

I should have been more clear.

My comment was geared more to the ‘users’. And even though those dealers wouldn’t be there without people to buy their stuff, they are actively facilitating the process. Frankly, it’s the worst manifestation of capitalism….throw the book at those bastards….

Definitely a slippery slope...

And depending upon which group you cater too you will always be broadening the term “legal” to make them feel included. And pretty soon sports will be the last thing of concern…

Funny thing about moderation though…

Normally when you can’t master it… the abuse takes care of itself. That goes for alcohol or drugs.

This where the ole ‘Institutional Control’ comes in handy. Coaches need to not only make standards and rules, but enforce them.

It’s legal to drink. But if a person shows up to work drunk, tell me how long that person would keep his/her job??? Same principles should and do apply to many athletic teams.

Actually

I don’t think there’s many coaches that let it go. Once you set that precedence, you can quickly lose the whole team if they think you won’t do anything to them, while the others that do the right thing will be pissed that the cancers aren’t dealt with. A coach that lets the players run roughshod over the rules won’t last long. That doesn’t mean he has to make it all public, but I think the good coaches deal with it.

Some just don't take such transitions well.

Especially if they’ve been playing with their hand in the dirt all their lives. The reads are different, the techniques are different, you have to play coverage as a LB. Not saying it can’t be done it’s just not a given that a smaller DE can absolutely make the transition.

by OL_Coach on Feb 17, 2012 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

Totally agree

But if you can move anyone to LB, a DE is the logical choice and heaven knows we need some help at LB. Maybe not middle LB but strong or weak side which would be an easier transition.

A strong SEC is great for SEC schools...

… but the increasing power of big six conferences will come at a cost. The athletic programs at smaller conference schools will lose out and the future of college athletics will suffer as a whole. The results won’t be evident for years, but a change is inevitable. Think of the shrinking small business industry as big businesses/corporations have grown in power over recent decades.
