Monday Musings
Call him the comeback kid. Against the odds, Gene Chizik looks to have landed his third consecutive top 10 recruiting class. It may have taken three days beyond signing day to get there, but Auburn coaches have done the seemingly impossible.
With the signing of five-star offensive linemen Jordan Diamond on Friday, Auburn jumped significantly in all of the recruiting services rankings. Scout.com moved Auburn up five spots to number nine in its 2012 recruiting round-up. 247 Sports.com moved the Tigers from No. 17 to No. 13.
Auburn may not be finished yet. They remain in the running for Washington D.C, wide receiver Stefon Diggs and Denver prep offensive lineman Alex Kozan. Diggs is said to leaning toward Ohio State, but Maryland and Auburn remain possibilities. As we go to press, Kozan is still considering Iowa and Auburn.
For those who remain skeptical about the recruiting services and their rankings, this article will give you more ammunition. I'm just saying...
Watching the spectacle of the Super Bowl last night, it makes you wonder why the BCS can't put on a similar show. Holding the game on a Monday night is plain stupid. Why not showcase college football and have the championship on a Saturday night? It's the sport's traditional day to play and fans would have the next day off. Seems so simple.
While Auburn has yet to officially release its 2012 football schedule, we have a good idea of how it will shake out. According to FB Schedules.com, the slate looks like this:
(Sept. 1) Clemson (Georgia Dome); (Sept. 8) at Miss State; (Sept. 15) Louisiana-Monroe; (Sept. 22) LSU; (Sept. 29) OPEN DATE; (Oct. 6) Arkansas; (Oct. 13) at Ole Miss; (Oct. 20) at Vanderbilt; (Oct. 27) Texas A&M; (Nov. 3) New Mexico St.; (Nov. 10) Georgia; (Nov. 17) Alabama A&M; (Nov. 24) at Alabama.
I don't know the people behind the website, Never to Yield Foundation.com. What I do know is that in recent weeks, they've pinned some of the best articles ever written about Auburn and its standing in this state.
If you haven't already, check out their story entitled, The Cult of Updyke. It's been posted on our Fanshots page for several days. When in mixed company, you often hear Alabama fans say alleged Toomer's Tree killer Harvey Updyke is the exception to the Alabama fan base.
The dirty little secret is that most (not all) feel exactly the way Updyke does and that's why he's treated like a rock star at Alabama sporting events. It's a very telling article and one I agree with completely.
Vigor defensive lineman Darius Philon learned a valuable life lesson last week. When you hang around trash, bad things happen. We've all heard the story by now. Alabama coach Nick Saban yanked his offer to Philon on Wednesday morning and left the talented lineman sitting broken hearted at his signing ceremony.
This is not the first time Saban has pulled this stunt. It's been well documented in the past. In fact, it happened last month with Georgia prep running back Justin Taylor. I'd like to say I feel sorry for Philon, but he should have known better. You can bet he was warned.
There's no arguing Saban's success. There's also no arguing he cares only about himself. He's never left a job on good terms and the same will likely be said when he leaves Tuscaloosa.
Montgomery Advertiser columnist Josh Moon nailed it when he wrote last week, "For years, Saban has treated college football like a cutthroat business. He's skirted recruiting rules, danced around scholarship limitations and been surrounded by more career ending injuries to third-string players than any coach in the history of organized athletics.
"Honestly, taking the high road from Saban is the easiest win Gene Chizik will ever get. It's like winning a Good Ideas for Space Exploration Contest over Newt Gingrich."
As legendary college football analyst Beeno Cook said recently, "He's (Saban) a great coach, but I wouldn't be his Bridge partner." Amen.
In the end, Philon signed with Arkansas, a place he's never visited. Despite all the publicity surrounding the snubbing, you can bet there will be more kids who find themselves in the same boat next year. When you play with fire...

Is it catagorizing bama and Saban in a way that is unfair?
I dont think so.
All they care about is winning. Oh, they will say that isn’t true. But when they start talking about the mythical championships… it comes out in vivid colors. Then they will start hammering away about how well people did in school. Really?. I think they completely over look the bigger issue. There are problems at bama that they are going to wish away untll Saban leaves.. No one wants to admit the throw away players they have. They treat that team as if it were in the NFL already. Might as well be. People dressed up in fine clothes and driving Caddy Escalades… I am just saying… I didn’t come from a poor family… but I sure as hell couldn’t live like that. Still can’t. Mainly because it’s just not practical.
On a similar note, I read that article right when it came out on NTYF’s website. I completely agree with the premise. With all the hypocricy surrounding that deuchebag… all I can say to bama fans… actions are greater than words. If you are going to talk the talk… make sure you walk the walk.
On recruiting… I guess the term is better late than never.

Wallace is it true or not that Hulio’s roomate was a wealthy walk on and the son of a Red Elephant? Is there any truth to the rumors that this walk on left hundred dollar bills out on his dresser and a key to his extra Escalade? I do not know the answer to this but it keeps coming up. If you know please enlighten me.
Where does it "keep coming up?"
Because I’ve never heard that rumor at all. PS, rumors involving misspelled names are often less than credible.

I take it you've forgotten...
-You fired Tuberville (your most successful coach in modern history) for losing to Alabama for the first time in SIX years
-You ran off the two coordinators that won you a national title in the previous year, after leading you to an 8-5 record with an inexperienced and depth depleted roster.
-You went into nuclear meltdown mode immediately following the hiring of Gene Chizik (and after he lost to Kentucky in 2009)
-Since 2008, you lead the SEC in oversigning and since 2006, you’re second behind Ole Miss. Funny how it’s a crime to you guys now. What’s with that?
-You sent death threats to Brent Calloway and TJ Yeldon for switching their commitments to Alabama
-And if you need further proof, go back and read the meltdown time comments on RBR after each loss last season. But you guys could care less about winning, right? Hell, it took four years of mediocrity for Alabama to finally fire Shula, and half the fanbase wanted him retained for one more season. But we care more about winning than Auburn does? Give me a break….
You can jerk off to the notion (made up and only thought about in Auburn) that there are “problems” going on at Alabama all you want, but the truth is, the only problem is so many people are wanting to come here, but only few can be taken. Whether you like it or not, everything about UA is currently running circles around AU right now. Be it academically, student growth, expansion, rankings, athletics, campus life, etc., Auburn had better step it up quick before it’s too late, and at the pace UA is running, time is not on your side. Not to mention T-Town is a far funner place for young people than Auburn is. Trust me, I’ve lived in both towns. If there was a problem, there wouldn’t be a line forming halfway around the country of people wanting to come here. Period.
And do you seriously want to talk about improper recruiting tactics and shadiness amongst players? What about Reese Dismukes being photographed with your own HOSTESSES at a party during a recruiting visit? Or Greg Robinson installing the iphone app on his Facebook during a recruiting visit? Or why an Auburn booster (AUPilot) and friend of the Malzahn’s was offering cash to Geno Smith on Twitter? Or Corey Lemonier’s Corvette? Or Darren Bates’ Hummer (and strangely how his poor father could afford a new Hummer for himself after Darren signed with AU)? Or Jermaine Whitehead’s Comaro? Or Dakota Mosely’s Chrysler 300? Or Kenneth Carter’s tricked out Suburban? Or Ladarius Owens’ tricked out Crown Victoria? Or how Phillip Pierre-Louis managed to afford a NEW LEXUS after he signed with AU? Or your players receiving VIP treatment at an ATL club after the SECCG in ’10? Players such as Onterio McCaleb, Dakota Mosley, Mike McNeil, Demetruce McNeil, etc, being photographed flaunting thousands of dollars worth of cash? A poor father shopping his son to one school for almost $200k, but not asking anything from the school he ultimately committed to? And you recently had a player (McClover) confirm the same systematic PFP scheme that both Ramsey and Bowden confirmed years prior.

Really?
Tuberville was fired not for losing to bama. No, he was fired because he basically had lost control of his program. That and he had quit on the job. The recruiting was horrible and the program was suffering. His last year was indicative of how far he had dropped in terms of his professionalism. I am sure you and other bama fans forget because it was his inaction that enabled Saban to beat him in Tuscaloosa – the first time in history of the rivalry. You guys wanted us to keep him because you knew what he was like… you knew the trend would continue. My suggestion since you want to defend him…. GO HIRE HIM. HE WON’T BE TOO MUCH LONGER AT TEXAS TECH. Besides, we have a National Championship since hiring Gene Chizik. He did it in two years as opposed to never in 10 years.
You want to believe what you wrote about T-Town over Auburn in terms of things to do for young people. Go ahead. I have been to both. You couldn’t be more wrong.
The really funny thing here is besides the vulgarity in your expressions (which simply aren’t necessary) and the fact that you make this personal in your “YOU” suggestions, is your comments on Auburn Recruiting. I would suggest that you produce ANYTHING you list here and forward it right on to the NCAA like you did with Cam Newton. We all see where that got you before. Last time I checked… it produced NOTHING except egg on your face.
It’s amazing what sort of crap can come out of tider insider and tiger droppings. This is where being insulated in your own fandom becomes destructive. Perhaps this is how Updykes are made?

I thought it was SOP that each recruit goes to the Dog track/ Casino ATM……enters their pin# “BO34” and withdraws $200G.
I was also surprised to hear we aren’t giving out Corvettes and Hummers! You saw all of them during the Cam investigation when we were getting a daily proctology exam from the media. Surely Jamie/Phyllis got that information from a reliable source.

Funny how things change...
Because I do recall (and you can go back and pull up the old posts yourself from every Auburn forum on the net) that 36-0 thrashing was his nail in the coffin. Do we need to relive those harsh memories? And congratulations on that record in Bryant-Denny. I’ll take 41 overall and winning the last three out of four, any day of the week. Besides that national championship (courtesy of a once in a lifetime QB) what has Gene Chizik done? If he loses to Alabama the next two years, mark my words, your fans will run him off, just as they did Tuberville. And yeah, averaging nine wins a season prior to 2008 was signs of a coach losing control of a program… and I thought you guys didn’t care about winning?
Just remember we’re not the fans who spent our hard earned money on PIs to stalk your prospects (like your fans did in the Operation Red Dog case) and then attempted to frame them when they couldn’t uncover any dirt. Should I also mention Gene Jelks? ;)
And to those of you doubting your own investigations (and using the shady Cam ruling as proof – don’t forget the NCAA initially cleared Oregon, USC, and Ohio State before Yahoo! got involved – in addition, there was nothing to players receiving free class credits either according to some of your more finer fans), here you go:
I’m not saying Auburn boosters bought these players their vehicles, but if you’re going to question certain Alabama players, why not question your very own first? I’m not saying Alabama’s not cheating either. Nobody knows, but you have as much evidence to prove Alabama is cheating as I do Auburn. And before you go blasting Tider Insider and Tiger Droppings, stroll on over to ITAT and The Bunker and you’ll see there’s a large portion of your fanbase that’s just as pathetic. :)

You could say Tuberville was on the hot seat..
….for 7 years. For many Auburn fans, losing to a 4-5 Bama squad 31-7 in 2001 was unforgivable. We lost 4 of our last 5 games that season, and Tubs was forced to fire his coordinators.
….Tub was on the ropes again at the end of 2003. We had been picked in the top ten, but limped to a 6-5 record going into the Iron Bowl. This was a team with so much offensive talent that two-time Super Bowl winning running back Brandon Jacobs could not crack the two deep. Marcus McNeil, Ben Grubbs, Courtney Taylor, Devin Aromashodu, Ben Obomanu, Carnell Williams, Ronnie Brown, Jason Campell. All play in the NFL. And yet, that team managed only 10 points against Arkansas, 7 against LSU, and 7 against Georgia. The wolves were circling.
…..Tuberville survived with an Iron Bowl win, and got an extension in 2004. Went undefeated. Things began a gradual slide from there. 5 missed field goals in Baton Rouge. A no-show in the Cap One bowl and over 550 yards given up to Wisconsin.
…..In 2006, we were supposed to be a BCS contender, but suffered face-plants at home against Arkansas and Georgia. In 2007, we lost at home to South Florida and Mississippi State. Also that year we got hammered in Athens 45-20. Then, Tuberville went duck hunting during recruiting season, then fired Al Borges to hire Tony Franklin.
…..2008 was a disaster from the Vanderbilt game, on. To suggest Tuberville was fired solely from the 36-0 Iron Bowl loss is ludicrous. Acrimony had been percolating for a very long time. Both sides of Tommy’s contract negotiations after the 2008 season have said repeatedly that Tuberville resigned. Speculation otherwise fits into the same category as the Flat Earth Society.

Many outside of our state percieve this to be an exaggeration....
You can not hide the underlying truth behind this premise. Even a slanted piece by an al.com sports journalist fails to mention Auburn and Brandon Jacobs while the story mentions several players who played for Troy, and Bama.
I know many Alabama fans that do not condone these lunatics and their behavior. They far outnumber those that act out their fears of Auburn football, and it’s successes. But when the sports/news machine that is run in this state, has such a directed agenda, it’s a difficult thing to ask a person to look at things objectively.
That, and the whole societal behavior sinking to new lows, and going down the drain and all.
I shake my head, at what we’ve become.

I don’t think Brandon was left with a good impression of Auburn. He claims Southern Illiniois. Chalk that up to another Tuberville leadership failure.

"Negative? Hell's bells. I can out drink anyone in the kool-aide department. But I also like to be realistic. Don't you?"
And I will say this...
While it would appear to be crying over spilt milk… I find that this perception is more than real. Auburn University doesn’t expect a hand out. We just expect equal and fair treatment. We get neither.
Why don’t we get that?
Because we are the minority. And because they own the media… and to the victor go the spoils!
After watching the news this morning before departing for work I noticed that folks had protested and misbehaved in Mass. after the Patriots loss. I personally thought that the Patriots played well in the loss. They represented themselves and the AFC with honor. Why couldn’t the fans?
Maybe that is the expected norm in other places. Don’t get what you want… even when you didn’t deserve it… well burn a car. Torch a building. Poison a tree! Make a general ass of yourself, somebody will give you what you wanted anyway. I hate to say it folks but this behavior is becoming the norm for our country.
All I can say is: thank God for Auburn. Thank God we are different. Thank God we are willing to endure. Why? Because….
I believe that this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn. Therefore, I believe in work, hard work.
I believe in education, which gives me the knowledge to work wisely and trains my mind and my hands to work skillfully.
I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot win the respect and confidence of my fellow men.
I believe in a sound mind, in a sound body and a spirit that is not afraid, and in clean sports that develop these qualities.
I believe in obedience to law because it protects the rights of all.
I believe in the human touch, which cultivates sympathy with my fellow men and mutual helpfulness and brings happiness for all.
I believe in my Country, because it is a land of freedom and because it is my own home, and that I can best serve that country by “doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with my God.”
And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in Auburn and love it.

I find it funny...
Their fans lump all of us into the Updyke category (all because he poisoned a tree), yet NEVER say anything about the portion of their Charles from Reeltown’s/I-Man’s/Bobby’s/Tammy’s who sent Updyke and his innocent family death threats, forcing them to relocate out of state and who assaulted him at an Opelika gas station.
There’s a significant difference between a human being and a tree. So with every anti-Updyke post, there should also be a negative post directed toward the portion of your fans who committed acts of violence upon Updyke and his family.

I wish we wouldn’t discuss the liberal arts social club in West Vance, especially in the wake of their BCS victory. The only thing worse than losing, is griping about losing…at least in my book. If their tactics are unsavory, they will come home to roost eventually, but complaining about sounds so Jan. 2011….on their side. Is it fair? No. Do they get preferential treatment in the media? Yes. Welcome to Auburn. Thats the way it is and the way it always will be. Thats what makes what we have done in the last 30 years all the more impressive.
Recruiting? Looks like a great class…..for the offense. Problem is we have had a dickens of a time keeping people out of the end zone and we didn’t do much other than tread water there. 7 recruits doesn’t leave any room for error there.
Is it me or does that schedule look particularly daunting? We better come focused and ready to play coming out of fall camp. With a new and inexperieced QB most likely taking the helm, and a makeover on the O-Line, along with two new co-ordinators…..September could be a rough month if we don’t find a way to gel quickly.
I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.
Do we now see what happens when you start blathering on about Bama?

I guessed what I am most surprised at is that folks go on their rivals sites looking for stuff to get offended about.
I could go on RBR and troll but its a waste of time…..wait, actually I couldn’t I got banned after one post. Just like Dawgsports. How we treat our trolls says more about us than anything. A) We aren’t so thin skinned that we can’t take getting ribbed B) We aren’t afraid to allow dissenting opinion and C) We aren’t afraid to debate….especially as long as AUTiger is around.
That being said, unlike standup guys like lastmilefire….the trolls we draw are especially dense and foul.
I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.
I'm not sure...
especially as long as AUTiger is around.
whether that was a compliment or a remarkably clever, left-handed dig at me.
(either way, thanks)

We may not always agree...
but I enjoy your posts. I’m sure you, like myself, are stirring it up to get conversation going sometimes, so I don’t take opposing viewpoints too seriously. One thing for sure though, is that you present a formidable and reasoned arguement for your side that goes beyond the surface or obvious. I know that if I disagree with a position you take, I better have something solid to back up my point, because I know you will.
So yes…its a compliment.

As a prof once said...
he didn’t specify maximum or minimum lengths for papers, because it should vary from writer to writer. He said “it takes me about two or three pages to clear my throat.”
Some of us are just like that.
Don’t go shoring up the ranting and raving. I may not always respond directly to one of your lengthy comments, but I always enjoy reading them.
"The ball will be spotted at the six-inch-yardline."
Yeah, I like some back-and-forth...
…even if I’m not liking the person I’m trading shots with (e.g.: the first five or six posts with elfcrash, when he’s so smug you want to track him down and defenestrate him…though he’s been known to get better as discussions go on).
Appreciate the compliment, too. Oddly enough though, some of the things that have been THE most polarizing on here as of late (e.g.: hiring of Loeffler, who the starting QB should be) produced nothing but complete ambivalence and/or apathy in me.
With that said, it’s been great, watching you, Sparkey, wde, buddy ro, and (to a lesser extent) ToTM go ’round and ’round on some of those things. I must just like things properly stirred up, I suppose.
"The ball will be spotted at the six-inch-yardline."
Exactly what does lesser extent mean?

Just that
they tend to write treatise-length position pieces in those discussions. Your contributions are shorter and less frequent…or at least they were in the discussions I referenced.
By the way, congrats on the expecting — I must’ve missed when you first mentioned it.
"The ball will be spotted at the six-inch-yardline."
Well, okay then.
Thank you for the congrats….I’ve only recently (like yesterday) gone ‘public’ with the news…and I tended to slip it in here and there. Talking about food in the other thread…like I said, kryptonite. On the upside, at least we know my appetite is back :)

This is especially funny given the banhammer tossed at crmccarty recently.
Hypocritical, to say the least. Reading the commenters though, I though hypocrites were confined to the Updyke Nation.

TET is incredibly patient when it comes to putting up with folks like him. Compare that to the one-and-done policy RBR has in a lot of cases.
Then again, take yourself as an example. Is this all you have to contribute? Really?

Actually
he’s spent time as a double poster—first this crmmccarty to whom he refers and now his new screen name. Didn’t work for long.

I like that schedule.
Only one FCS team on it. I had seen earlier schedules that had two (McNeese St being the other).

Let’s me know we’re doing things right. Roll Tide
While I disagree with much of what was written about you guys, I understand why he does it. It’s part of the rivalry. And it goes both ways. Go back and check RBR from November 2010 to this time last year. At one point, out of the 30 front page articles, fan posts and fan shots close to 75% of what was written there was about Auburn. That’s not even including the comments.

Nice of you to leave out the Article from a different perspective from Arkansas
Also, nice of you to gloss over the fact that despite Auburn needing to sign D-Linemen, you guys weren’t kicking down Philon’s door to sign him either, despite him having previously been committed to you. Could it be that there’s more to the story than Josh Moon bothered to investigate/report?
Nah, probably not.
He was committed to us first...

His high school coach encouraged the change of heart.

Reading full comments isn't exactly your thing is it?
Seriously, it’s LITERALLY right after the comma you ended the quote with.
My point was that maybe, just maybe, there were reasons that people backed off of him. For one, he still hasn’t had the surgery required to even figure out how bad the damage is. And there are NCAA qualification issues. Auburn needed a DL, but didn’t come at him on Signing Day despite having spots open and a need at the position. Your moral high horse has no legs.
BTW, can we talk about the two former 3-star recruits medical hardshipped today by Auburn? Or is it different when it’s not Saban at the helm?
Yeah, we can talk...
My point was the part under your quote. Yes I read what you posted, and surprisingly, we agreed.
As to the two players you are referring to, Aubrey Phillips, and Ed Christian were given Medical hardship schollys, last season.
Phillips tried twice to make the team, and medically wasn’t able to. Christian’s medical problems surfaced prior to last season.Phillips was rated a 5* and Christian a 3*.

What are AU’s chances of landing Diggs? I think it kind of a long shot. What do you think?
Just reviewed 2012 roster, it seems that the defense is losing only 2 “true” starters. The offense, not very many at all but its the quality we’re losing, i.e., Lutzie, Mc., Blake. Would you kind of consider this a “foundation” class? Or depth class (except the D)?
Neat
How is their situation different, besides not having a NYT reporter take a bunch of quotes out of context?
It's the only two that AU has give a med. hardship to in 5 years
The only thing I question in all of this is your coach stating on a national podium, that a commitment is a commitment. And that the players should not commit if they don’t mean it, then the next year cut them from the team, to make room for another player. Regardless of what he thinks his job is, this is not the NFL. He works for an institution of higher education, not the NFL. Besides, we all seen how that turned out for him, didn’t we…

Look man
Neither side knows anything about the situations surrounded these medical hardship cases on either side.
Just as none of us know what circumstances surrounded the players who have transferred, left early, given up the sport, etc. To act otherwise is disingenuous. There’s a ton of behind the scenes stuff that fans never see or hear about.
Admit it, Saban’s just an easy villain to point at right now, just as Cecil and Cam were last year. People who flock to read the “drivel” posted by (rival team mouthpiece) just to talk about how terrible it is are part of the problem. Stop reading what they post and that will send a much more important message than any comment on the article will. I bet Josh and whoever you guys hate the most don’t even bother to read the comments. I’ve specifically stopped going to SBB because every time someone goes there to tell him how dumb his opinions are, they pad his wallet.

"Despite Auburn needing to sign D-Linemen"
Nice talking point used in support of rationalization of cutthroat updyke behavior.
Which, unfortunately for you, has the drawback of being untrue and, therefore, not supportive of your position.
Okay dude
I guess all the recruiting analysts were wrong about Auburn’s needs and focuses this year.
PS Even your own thread on signing day commented on the lack of DL recruits being less than satisfying given all the prospects you guys swung on. I guess that guy was just an updyke in disguise huh?
GMAFB
The recruiting analysts are almost always wrong...
Auburn’s single biggest NEED was Offensive Tackle. That was taken care of, quite nicely at that. The second biggest need was Linebacker. Auburn wanted three, signed two. In a year when LB quality was weak nation wide.
Just for the record, AU has 17 defensive linemen, including the new recruits. I’d say that was enough for one season, wouldn’t you?

Open Date
Would have loved to see an open date prior to the UGA game. Might night help, probably not. It might could give Coach Lolley a little more time to make sure the DB’s are up to speed.
If we keep him...
We’re making a HUGE mistake. The guy can’t get the job done. Do we need more evidence to show us the guy is a terrible coach?
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
Agreed.
I was trying to be nice.
Have you heard of any changes there, Sparkey?
There are rumblings...
The prevailing rumor seems to have the Falcons defensive back coach coming to Auburn. I really think that would be a HUGE upgrade from Lolley. So he has great recruiting connections. Fantastic, give him a nice cushy desk job, give him awesome perks, but don’t let him even get a sniff of grass. I know Phillip Marshall has steadfastly defended the guy as a great coach, but Auburn’s corner play for three years has been porous to put it kindly. We need him to be kept away from the field. He just hasn’t produced any good results.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.

THIS^
Wasn’t lolley given a desk job sometime during the final years of Tubs? I’m wondering if Chizik was running out of cap room after bringing in his original all star cast of coaches and got lolley on the cheap…
"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass...and I'm all out of bubblegum."
Blaming Lolley?
Thats like blaming a Lieutenant for a Colonels poor battle plan. He may not be a good coach but the play of our DB’s goes back to Roof and Chizik. I know you don’t think that Lolley is on an island by himself determing style of play and that Chizik and Roof didn’t have any say so. Our DB’s were playing a specific scheme that called for them to play off the receivers to limit big plays. We’ve heard Chizik defend that time and again. Nobody likes that but thats the philosophy the staff decided to employ.
The fact that they don’t look back for the ball, is also a style that obviously was endorsed by Roof and Chizik. They all have been taught to play the receiver and not the ball….again this is designed to limit big plays. And given the fact we have been playing a TON of underclassmen in the secondary the last few years I can see why that philosophy was employed.
For the record I don’t agree with that philosophy either but its what Chizik and Roof wanted to go with. What has hurt us in the passing game the last few years was talent level (‘09), inexperience (’10) and lack of pressure on the QB (’11). Throw into the mix that they spent the majority of the game on the field because of our offense, and its hard to put up decent numbers. Coincidentally, when we win the TOP in a game our defensive stats are much better.
I love the smell of Auburn in the autumn.....it smells like....victory.
Not sure whappened...
The post below is a direct reply to you Colonel.
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
This is Sparkey Remember?
Since when do I NOT HAVE A PROBLEM blaming the coaches? I completely blame Roof and the philosophy to not turn back to see the ball is absolutely ridiculous and out of date. That is a much more effect style when the receivers aren’t at least 6’3 or above. It’s really hard to get a job ball with your back turned. I’m telling you, in ten to fifteen years that coaching style will be obsolete. It’s already in the minority. Sorry, I am not buying anything that defends Phillip Lolley or Ted Roof. Nobody is more happy he’s gone than I am. Now we actually have one of the best defensive coordinators in football. Ted Roof never was and that’s not really a hard argument for me to make.
However, we just flipped around and made Loffler our next Ted Roof. He’s that hire of Chizik that makes you scratch your head and go…“What?”
It's Auburn against the world. Good luck world.
