Auburn Takes it on the Chin - Falls to Tide 68-50
The Auburn Basketball Team (13-11, 3-7) started out hot last night connecting on its first five shots to take a 10-4 lead against Alabama over the first five minutes.
Then through the eyes of this homer it appeared that the referees changed the complexion of the game. That's not to take anything away from the Tide who despite the absence of suspended starter Tony Mitchell put together a convincing win.
We knew it was going to be an up hill battle going in and the Tigers could not afford to make mistakes. With the Tigers leading 14-7, Kenny Gabriel was called for the first of three first-half technical fouls against Auburn for hanging on to the rim after a dunk. Kenny finished the game with 21 points for the Tigers.
The free throws off the technical's led to a 28-10 run by Alabama over the final 12 minutes of the half leaving the Tigers trailing 35-24 at the break.
Alabama (16-7, 5-4) scored 12 points in the first half off the three technical fouls including another for Chris Denson hanging on the rim and one on Coach Barbee.
There's no question that changed the complexion of the game, causing the Tigers to become frustrated committing 20 turnovers and seeing the Tide pull away with a lead they just couldn't make up. Auburn needed to keep this one close to have a chance but it was a chance that was taken away by the fouls.
However, Tony Barbee would have no part in placing blame for the loss on officiating. He said afterwards, " "We got off to a great start, and we had a lot of momentum on our side. Then it came to a stop. It came down to toughness, and that is why we lost our momentum. It had nothing to do with the technical fouls."
I appreciate Coach Barbee taking that stance, but as a fan, I can say it had a lot to do with it.
You just hate to see any athletic contest be affected by poor officiating. Bama may well have won without the help from the technical's but we will never know.
Regardless, it goes down as an ' L' for the Tigers. The only thing they can do about it is work harder and play smarter.

You can't package this any other way...
Losing at home and on your brand new court to your most hated rival….
I’m not sure what happened to this program. Basketball just isn’t my thing. But it’s obvious a new court and new coach aren’t having the impact Jay Jacobs intended. A bitter pill indeed.

We don't have anyone in our starting lineup that would be a starter on an upper-half SEC (or any other BCS conference) team
The new arena and coach aren’t going to turn them into the Monstars

The sad thing is...
I see remarkable improvement in this team. We are just a couple years away from really competing in the SEC

I gotta say that the momentum of this team
really can flow through Chubb
I don’t know how you guys feel about Bammers talking about your team right now, but he was on fire in the first 5 minutes and Auburn was pushing us around
then he disappeared and our big guys owned the paint, even Carl the Swede got in on the action and no one could cover Jamychal – Chubb had the size to bother Jamychal and was giving Jacobs fits on offense
Chubb needs to stay in the game more
People who live in glass houses should not hang out with Charles Barkley.
Stache pic upgraded to Championship mode
Can't argue with that assessment.

After starting hot
Bama started double-teaming Chubb, at which point he began turning it over every 3 seconds. Chubb needs to stay out of the game more

This was one hard to watch.
Agree on the officiating. It really changed everything from the way the game was headed but you’ve got to be able to overcome that.
We were en fuego for the first 5 minutes or so.....
I thought all was well, then I went to put little ToTM to bed and I came back to the Colliseum being filled with ‘Boos’ and our Tigers falling apart. It was ugly and demoralizing.
What I appreciate the most is Barbee taking responsibility. You won’t see any whining about officiating from this group. That’s encouraging and I respect that. Barbee really has us headed on the right track. Mr. ToTM thinks it’s a conditioning thing….how they can’t seem to sustain their umph. He says that will get better and better. (Mr. ToTM is basketball; I’m football). Mr. ToTM also observed that there is a fire in this group that he has NEVER seen before-there’s life, even when it’s ugly. This growing stage is pretty painful, but we’ll get there.

I believe Mr ToTM knows what he's talking about.

I like the way Mr T thinks;

As a Bama guy, I’d have been mad if those technicals were called against us. Fortunately, they usually get a different officiating team to handle the rematch later in the year.
Now to pay my Red Elephant Club dues so we can find out who those other officials will be…

I think what was truly t fault
Was poor shot selection under pressure, the lack of ability to hit SEVERAL wide open shots (looking at you KG), and poor passing in the second half. Can’t let those technicals hold you down. There were bad calls on both sides. There were at least 3 oob calls on Bama that simply weren’t out. Ward cooled off for the wrong game. Still I’m impressed with these guys

Bad Calls
I do not even want to hear about that. I f a team is so fragile that it can not weather a bad call or two it should expect to get it’s butt kicked. I would not want to use that as an excuse because that would not speak very highly of Aubuns mental toughness. It sure was a let down . It is sad that Alabama kept fouling us knowing that we were not going to make any free throws! We got beat by a better strategy and better atheletes not by the officals or any red elephants!
That was a hard game to watch.
The officiating was awful for most of the 1sthalf, but not as bad as Auburn’s shooting in the 2nd half. Auburn’s effort was outstanding until the 2nd rim-hanging technical, which was the worst call of the game (KG deserved the 1st tech). Auburn just isn’t good enough to bounce back from adversity against a strong team.
The real story of the game was Auburn missing open shots in the 2nd half and UA making open shots. Neither team had many open shots in the first half. Auburn has not shot well under pressure all year, so the outcome was predictable. Time for Barbee to recruit some pure shooters, not just pure athletes.
Good analysis B_B
Your esp.right about needing some shooters and that AU has thus far lacked the ability to:
“bounce back from adversity against a strong team”
Ole Miss being the exception.

For a team that shoots the ball as poorly as we do, we sure do jack up a lot of outside jumpers, usually with a hand in the shooters face. It seems our offensive philosophy is “when in doubt, jack up a 3”. It would be nice if we had a consistent post presence. I’d like to see a little more inside out game with some pick and roll mixed in.
