Can Somebody Get Alabama A Spell Check?

What would we do without Alabama?  Just when we think the cast of That 70’s Show couldn’t possibly look more stupid, they go and top themselves.

As you may or probably don’t know (or care), Alabama honors its captains each year by putting their names and hand prints in cement at Denny Chimes in Tuscaloosa.

Now I know what you are thinking. Being named captain of a team that lost to Louisiana-Monroe is akin to being asked to be Ron Paul’s running mate – nobody cares and it’s kind of embarrassing.

But it gets better.

Center Antoine Caldwell was elected a 2007 captain and was honored during a ceremony on Wednesday. There was just one problem with the glorious day that Bear created for all – they spelled Antoine’s name wrong. A-T-N-O-I-N-E was how it was written in concrete for all eternity.

The hits just keep on coming for this band of clowns.  It reminds me of that old Snickers ad where the guy paints the end-zone in Kansas City with the word "Chefs" instead of "Chiefs."

Sometimes reality is better than television.

I’ve said it here before: Bear Bryant’s run in the 1960’s and 70’s was worth it in every way. Because for the last 25 years, we’ve had the pleasure of watching "his boys" run this program into the ground – over and over again. They continue to invent ways to make the school a laughing stock.

And Auburn fans just keep smiling and laughing.

I was eating at a Shula’s Steak House in Chicago last week and was admiring all the pictures on the wall. There were a few of Mike Shula hanging around the bar area. I just smiled to myself. They brought back such pleasant memories.

I do believe it was the best steak I’ve ever tasted in my life.

Priceless! Thanks Bammers.

I couldn't agree with you more, Jay. Take this and several other instances over the last several years that the Bama nation has been a part of, and well...you (or any Auburn fan) really can't write this stuff. It just happens magically. Instead of looking like a prestigious, well-respected university that is steeped in football tradition and class, the players, coaches and even fans continue to live by the very stereotypes they try so hard to deny. And all of this is laid out for Auburn fans to enjoy! Add in the 6 years of Tiger domination and you know these people are going stir crazy mad inside. I absolutely love it! WDE!

Poor kid...

You guys quit making fun of him.  Imagine if they had asked you to stencil 'Daymeune Craig' into concrete.  See?  I can't even spell it right...

Jay, this is a 'Pete Holiday Hack-Thread' and you should be ashamed.  I thought this was a legitimate sports blog.  If this is how it's going to be, I hereby resign my guest-author commission.

Wow!  I was almost able to keep a straight face while typing that...

Seriuosly, though.  Poor kid.  Not his fault.  Jeremy Elder?  Different story entirely...

Rock Me!

.....Sorry. I couldn't help it! I'm a hopeless 80s hair-metal freak!

.....Maybe the Sabear will special-order some Quickcrete with a built-in spell-checker, in the future. And to think my daughter was considering an English degree from that school...

Nice blog

been reading for a while, don't usually comment.  Love the info.  Had a buddy (a bama fan)show me the link a while back and am glad he did.  He did tell me it was the best place to get info on Alabama football, saying that "the thing Auburn and Alabama fans have in common is that they both love to talk about Alabama football."  I told him to shut up, but looking at the posts the past few days, he is partly right.  I grew up watching Auburn in the 70s, back when it was TOUGH, so I can really appreciate our success now.  Keep up the good work, and others may not agree, but we have so many great things going on at Auburn right now that it stinks to hear Auburn people still focusing on Alabama.  Maybe its just me, or getting older, but lets enjoy the time we are having now and try to be the focus ourselves instead of talking about Tuscaloosa.

I think...

...the phrase "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer..." comes to mind, Zeke.

You keep commenting though, while we decide if you're a Bama infiltrator or not. Either way, I do agree.  Accent the positive...

Acid Reign says that the Bama fans were so merciless to us back in the 1970s that the debt can never be repaid.  What are your feelings on that, Zeke?

It was tough in the 70s

I did catch a lot of heat during the 70-early 80s, especially at school.  I think that makes this period even sweeter.  I can see why some people would feel like this is an opportunity to get back at Alabama.  To me, it was not so personal as it seems today.  Maybe I am mistaken but it seemed more light-hearted back then.  I just am glad we are having this time now, maybe more so than someone younger who has grown up with Auburn holding the edge between the two.

We shall never forgive them!

.....Actually, I wasn't even going to comment on this story, but greatvvwhite's cool sig got me started. In fact, after posting, I yanked my Gibson SG off the stand and hacked out some Great White...

.....In all seriousness, this is a case of some Buildings & Grounds employee making a simple mistake. I'm sure they'll chisel it up and fix it. If they don't, well, then THAT might be pretty good fodder for follow-up!

.....I'm not normally one for taunting Bama fans. I'd rather wait till one of them makes idiotic statement, then pounce. I've always preferred discussing tangible aspects of the game. I'm also determined NOT to act like the butt-holes some of my Bama family were, back in the 1960s and 70s, now that Auburn's had unprecedented success in the Iron Bowl.

.....Look for my preview on Auburn vs. USM, this weekend. This is a series that has laid dormant since Terry Bowden's first year, and will be interesting. A lot of unknowns...

Good Comments...

I make no apologies for pounding on Bama. It's part of what makes the game fun. Believe me, if the shoe was on the other foot those guys wouldn't hesitate to jump on us. They are getting their just rewards and I love it!
