Nostalgia Friday: Dameyune Craig

By Jay Coulter
jccoulter@gmail.com

Today we look at the career of former Auburn quarterback Dameyune Craig. In my lifetime, I’d have to say he’s the best quarterback I’ve ever seen wear the orange and blue.

I was too young to remember Pat Sullivan. And no, I’m not suggesting he comes close to the Heisman winner. But you’d be hard pressed to pick a better one that’s played on the Plains since.

During the 1997 season, he passed for 3,277 yards – still the most in Auburn history (by a mile). He was not only a gifted passer, but one of the best running quarterbacks in the country. Today it’s common place to see a quarterback run – in 1997 it was something new.

Craig was given serious Heisman consideration until a late season loss to Miss State. He came within a point of leading Auburn to an SEC Championship, falling to Peyton Manning and Tennessee 30-29 in the conference championship game.

Auburn receiver Karsten Bailey single handily blew the game for the Tigers by dropping a series of Craig passes that halted Auburn drives deep in Tennessee territory.

Auburn and Craig would finish the season with a win over Clemson in the Peach Bowl. A year later the wheels fell off the Auburn program and Terry Bowden was run out of town.

Big plays

he was the first quarterback i can remember and what i do recall was his ability to make big plays when there was pressure. the out of the pocket 40 yard pass was always my favorite.  i see alot of him in our new quarterback Kodi Burns. hopefully he can make it as exciting as it was when Dameyune Craig played

Auburn never lost an Alabama game while a i was a student. 02-07

Dameyune Craig

,,,was not one of my favorite QB's, although he put up some great stats.  He always seemed a little to willing to tuck the ball and run.  Call me old fashion if you wish.

On the other hand, Dameyune might fit in great with our new spread offense.

I'll have to take up for Craig!

.....The reason he was quick to run is because he played behind suspect lines.

.....In 1996, he had extremely green redshirt freshman Jeno James (who once actually fell over backwards before the snap!), junior Victor Riley (who showed up for two a days so out of shape he couldn't finish a 40-yard dash), junior walk-on James Kiger (maybe 250 pounds), 5th-year senior Leonard Thomas, and 5th-year senior walk-on Jim Roe. We got killed on the speed rush with that bunch.

.....Then, in 1997, we had pretty good tackles: sophomore Jeno James had improved greatly, and made some all-SEC teams. Senior Victor Riley made All-American. But the middle was woeful in 1997. There was totally green redshirt freshman T. J. Meers, sophomore T. J. Dunnigan, who had never snapped a ball till a week before the first game when he was moved to center, and junior Demarcus "False Start" Curry, a 330-pound behemoth who had trouble coming up out of a three point stance. He jumped early so many times in the SEC Championship Game, that Craig lost it and gave him a spanking on national TV! Frequently in 1997, teams would send two linebackers up the middle, and the line would buckle like cheap pair of shoes! Craig would sprint out and create... It was pretty amazing what he accomplished. The only teams to shut Craig down were Florida and Mississippi State, who were just too freakishly fast on the edge. Well, arguably, Alabama did, too. They had speed on D.

.....Our leading rusher both years was Rusty Williams, with around 300 yards a season. Not much help there...

2 questions about Craig
  1. Whatever happened to him in the NFL? I seem to remember he was drafted by the Bengals...?
  1. Is Kodi Burns his equal?

Craig landed in the wrong place...

.....The Carolina Panthers. As far as I'm concerned, he never got a fair shot to be a starter. The Panthers were more sold on guys like Chris Weinke and Jake Delhomne. Craig did play NFL Europe with the Scottish Claymores, and set a pro football single game passing record:

.....I'd say that scrambling-wise, Burns and Craig are similar. However Craig was a passer, very accurate, and he could read defenses well. Burns is nowhere close, at this time. Craig's only impediment was that he was listed generously at 5'11". I'd say his lack of height doomed him in the NFL.

Dameyune the Playmaker

I'm with Jay in believing he was the best all-around AU QB to play at Auburn. I know Pat Sullivan meant a lot to his team as well, but in the modern era (my lifetime, haha!) I really believe he's the best yet. He was a great passer as his stats will show, but the added ability to scramble when under pressure just created another dimension that few QB's had during that time. I'll never forget the '97 SEC Championship Game because his performance (as well as hometown boy Jason Bray's INT return for TD). Dameyune was a playmaker, and I hope Kodi can live up to expectations and be that playmaker also. Thanks for the nostalgic look back. WDE!

Craig was coaching...

...Qbs at LSU as late as 2004.  I have no idea where he is now or what he's doing.

I'd have to agree with the gallery that Craig is the best Auburn QB the last 20-25 years or so.  He could do it all.

Spot on about Craig.....

Incredible talent and full of the "intangibles" that make a winner. I wouldn't say Karsten Bailey single handedly blew the SEC championship game though. We still went in with less than 3 minutes with the lead and Manning had to drive the length of the field with limited time. Something the AU defense had stymied most of the night. Prevent defense, the absolute bain of my football soul, cost us that game as much as the drops by Bailey. Manning showed a glimpse of his brilliance and in my opinion why he should have hands down won the heisman that year. He was far and away the best college football had to offer that year. And I drank away my sorrows trying to find a bar in downtown with out droves of obnoxious UT fans (not that there is any other type of UT fan).

That game was the best loss I've ever seen...

Tennessee was so strong, but they kept making mistakes and we kept taking advantage of them.  We played our hearts out, and when we were barely up at the half, I started to believe we could do it.

I can't recall specifically what Bailey did. Although I recorded the game, I just didn't have the heart to watch it again when I got home from the GA Dome, or anytime in the 10+ years hence, as is my M.O. with all our losses, unfortunately...
