NFL Draft Day Was A Sleeper

Groves (right) poses with Derrick Harvey in Jacksonville.

NFL Draft Day may be the most overblown event in all of professional sports. I’ll admit to working my Saturday schedule around the event. I was anxious to see how quickly Quentin Groves and Pat Lee would be drafted.

They are two of my favorites and it’s always great to see Auburn guys make it big – or at least get a shot at it. I tuned in around 1:30 p.m. CT and then waited... and waited some more. I’m as big a college football fan as they come, but I have to admit that I have never heard of about two thirds of the players selected in the first round. I’m sorry, but I can’t name the starting front five at Ohio State, USC or even Florida.

By 2:30 p.m. I was sleeping comfortably on my couch. A few hours later I woke up in time to see Groves selected with the 52nd pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Yawn. A little while later Lee was selected with the 60th pick by Green Bay. Good for them.

As me for it was a wasted Saturday. I should have skipped it and read about in the Sunday paper. I was a sucker for another made for TV event.

The NFL Network ran a show on Friday that showcased the top 10 draft flops of all time. Auburn linebacker Aundray Bruce, the 1988 number one overall pick came in at number six. Ryan Leaf took top honors.

On Friday’s ESPN College Football Live an email from a viewer in Auburn was directed toward analyst Mark May. He asked why the Tigers were not getting a lot of attention from the show. May said it was simple. LSU was the defending national champion and Alabama was getting a lot of attention for its recruiting class.

Here’s where it gets good... He went on to say Auburn would finish behind LSU and Alabama in the SEC West this year. LSU... maybe.  Alabama? It looks like some of the stupid has spread from Lou Holtz to young Marcus. My guess is that May gets all his Alabama information from Tide homer Reece Davis. Too funny.

In case you missed the race at Talladega yesterday, Tommy Tuberville drove the pace car for the event. It was his first race at the Alabama speedway. Kyle Busch went on to win in an exciting finish. Dick Trickle was 44th.

NFL Draft Day Definitely a Yawner

Jay,

I couldn't agree more. What a boring-arse draft day for the NFL. When your invitees @ Radio City are mostly lineman (I know those guys are necessary piece of every team's puzzle), but these guys aren't the point-makers like a QB, RB or WR. Honestly, how exciting is a O-lineman to the average NFL fan? Well, unless you're Miami and in that case any sign of fresh-blood is welcomed.

Overall, congrats to our drafted Tigers. I really was worried about the effect Groves' heart surgery would have on his draft status, and despite spin that said it wouldn't have an effect, I really think it did hurt him a little (landed 52nd). As for the others, it's nice to see the 4-5 other AU players get a shot in the NFL as well.

No comment on Mark May other than he's a ESPN homer who plays up to the "it" team like the rest of the sports media. LSU has holes to fill and cooky Les, and Alabama still has Sarah Jessica Parker at QB with "used car salesman" King Saban at the helm. Lets all be glad Auburn stays under the sports media's radar for at least a little while.

And finally, thank you, thank you, thank you for updating us on what position Dick Trickle finished at Talladega. Man, if only he could land the Viagra or Cialis sponsorship. I think his pole position could "rise" with such a move! ..Sry...had to. 8-)

Thanks Crash...

I agree the heart scare probably brought Groves down a spot or two. I really like Jacksonville and was glad to see him land there.  We get most of their games here on Sunday.

Genius

"Sarah Jessica Parker" Beautiful!  I cannot wait to use that.  I don’t understand why everyone has to use his full name.  Thus is the awesome backwards power of the bama nation.  Instead of going towards the one word names i.e. Madonna, Cher, Bono they go in the opposite direction and waste everyone’s time.  I wonder how many hours the nation as a whole would get back if people just called him John Parker, John Wilson, Wilson....etc..

Skipped all televised sports, this past weekend.

.....But, I was excited to read about Auburn's performance in the draft. I think Pat Lee may play the longest. He showed that he has the speed to stay with anyone. I'm not sure Coach Muschamp was the best technique coach, but Lee will get brought up to speed on that in NFL camp, I'm sure!

.....Slept Friday, worked 13.5 hours Friday night, took a shower and then ran tennis practice for my son's tennis team, since the real coach couldn't be there. Played Dungeons and Dragons with high-school buddies till midnight, on no sleep, a pot of coffee, and a sack of Milo's hamburgers. Picked up a new, neato staff for my wizard!

.....On Sunday, the tennis coach wanted to watch the car race at Talladega, so my wife and I ran the tennis match against Gardendale, which our team barely won. I conked out at 8:00 PM, without ever turning the TV on, all weekend. Watching tennis is hard. I tend to get animated during sports events that I care about. You're not allowed to make noise at a tennis match. And you're not allowed to coach players during the match. "Move up on their second serve! He's working your backhand! Step over one step! Keep your racket up when you're playing the net!" These things want to come out, and I have to keep biting my tongue!

.....Read about the Tiger baseball team's collapse against Bama. Grrrrr.

Talladega

I'm told that Tubs drove the pace car for the race.  Evidently, he's preparing for another career once Saban runs him the hell outta Dodge.  His driving name?  Ricky-Tommie....

Like it or not...

Draft day brings either an endorsement or an indictment  for your team, or so goes the popular perception. The draft means absolute squat for the upcoming cfb season, but people still want to use it as a referendum on your team.

The only one I really ever watched was 2005, when I witnessed the first time an entire backfield of a team, ever got drafted in the first round. Since I no longer give a crap about pro football, I only care that the Auburn guys get their chance.

Hey, did UAT keep their streak alive of no first-rounders this century?

Not a single bammer was drafted.......

apparently D.J. halls attitude and reputation greatly hurt his draft potential. I am surprised that no one took Simeon Castille or Wallace Gilberry in the 6th or 7th. And I wouldn't place any importance on the draft for the upcoming collegiate season. But its nice to one up the bammers in any way and it does pay dividends when recruiting (especially if the drafted players or undrafted free agents have a decent career).

My how times have changed...

...since the 60s and 70s when any potential NFL hopeful who resided in the state of Alabama HAD to go to Tuscaloosa to get the recognition required. Seems that things have done a bit of a 180 since those days.

Good thread topic for someone:  Compare players drafted from us and them for the last 25 years--that would leave a two year margin after the death of Bryant to judge it accurately...
