Nostalgia Friday: 1993 Auburn vs. Florida

By Jay Coulter

A few weeks back we took a look at the epic 1994 Auburn-Florida game. It’s probably still the biggest win over the Gators in series history – although some of you may argue that point.

Today we look at another great Florida game – the one that occurred a year earlier. Auburn came into the contest on October 16, 2003, as a big underdog at home. The fourth-ranked Gators were expected to trounce over the upstart 19th ranked Tigers.

Few around the country believed that Auburn’s 6-0 record was for real. The victory marked a turning point in the season – others around the country started taking notice of this team and its young coach, Terry Bowden.

Before a capacity crowd at Jordan-Hare Stadium, Auburn would prevail in a back and fourth contest that ended with the Tigers pulling out a 38-35 win on the way to a perfect 11-0 season.

What a freshman QB can do for you...

.....We saw Danny Wuerffel keep Auburn in the game with two balls he shouldn't have thrown. The first interception, a 95 yard pick-six by Calvin Jackson, kept us from falling behind 17-0 in the first quarter. Frankly, I thought we got by with mugging a Florida receiver, before the ball got there. On Chris Shelling's pick, we were able to extend a 1 point lead to 8, in the 4th quarter. Take those two bad throws away, and we probably take a blow-out loss in that game.

.....Did you know, that Ryan Perriloux has finally been booted, from the LSU squad? Game 4 in Jordan Hare, next fall, LSU brings a rookie QB to Tigerland!

.....As with all games in 1993, I heard this one on the radio. I did, however, wear out a copy of the "Attitude" tape in the course of winter, 1994!

Perriloux loss is huge for AU...
I agree Acid.  That makes the LSU game all the more doable.  Is it possible that the West could come down to the Iron Bowl?

Ghost Game...

You had to be there to have seen the 'best team on radio' or something like that. Although I was there, for some reason, I have very few recollections of this game--probably because I didn't have the chance to review it in more detail the next day.

I do remember thinking at the time that it was the most exciting game I've ever seen in JH--something that hasn't ever diminished over time...

Perrilloux was a cancer on that team.  They might end up being better without him. Although we still can cling to the old adage that a frosh QB can't win a SEC crown, that doesn't mean he can't win a division. LSU isn't going to roll over, but I'd say the West is wide open...

Listening to some sports radio today (something I rarely do in the off-season), trying to get some more on this story, much was said about how this opened up Auburn's chances in the west, but the talk centered on how our offense was going to be just as green.

Forgive me, but considering how poorly our offense performed last year, if this years' just breaks even and the defense holds up as usual, we shouldn't be half bad. Just saying...

If we can iron out a few wrinkles early I'd say that we could surprise a lot of people...

By far.....

one of my favorite memories at Jordan-Hare. Danny Wuerffel was looking pretty shell shocked and Spurrier was throwing his visor.....classic. Frank Sanders was spectacular.

Perriloux was the only experienced QB on the roster. They are left with a redshirt freshman and a Harvard transfer that has thrown 2 passes since transferring to LSU. I liked AU's chances of winning the west before Perriloux was gone and I certainly do now.

Jay I will be shocked if Bama can go from 6-6 regular season last year to winning the West this year. I don't think AU should pencil in a win for the Iron Bowl by any means as records don't count in that game. But for them to be in contention for the West at the end of the season would take a phenomenal turn around from last season.

Right now I am more worried about UGA than any other opponent. LSU is still talented but they lost a huge piece of the puzzle. Alabama will be improved but it would be a great season for them to go 5-3 in SEC play and I don't think that wins the west. It will be interesting to see how far Houston Nutt can take the much lauded recruiting classes that "O" had at Ole Miss. I look for them to be the most improved team in the SEC this year (although they would only have to go to a bowl to achieve that title). Still Ole Miss could be the sleeper in the west if everything falls into place for Nutt.

Funny Story

About three weeks ago, over on fanblogs, I made a wager with a LSU fan that Perrilloux would get kicked off the team yet again before the season started.  The loser had to change his moniker to something of the winner's choosing for a week.  'Bayou Bengal', as he is known, is a good sport and is currently posting over there with the following psuedonym:

Bayou Bengal Loves Bryan Corndogs and so does Coach Miles

Ya gotta love it!

One of the best games

,,,,I have ever been to.  It was so loud, the noise meter around the old score board stayed pegged most of the time.  We couldn't even hear each other talk.

What a game!
