Open Letter To Georgia Fans

Mon Nov 12, 2007 at 09:58:36 AM EDT

Congratulations! Your school, team, and coaching staff have acted as classless as possible this year. The game Saturday night was just another example. Georgia's theatrics Saturday night were absolutely deplorable. They looked like a BUNCH OF CIRCUS MONKEYS out there. It takes late hits, blackouts, and total lack of character to win. Congrats Mark Richt. I used to respect you. Now, I have nothing but contempt for you and your fans....But, don't celebrate too long Georgia fans! You beat Alabama, Auburn, and Florida in the same season and STILL won't make it to the SEC! Congrats on absolutely nothing! We still own you....

I am a bit ashamed of what is posted above, although some, if not most of it is true.  I was sitting the right on the Auburn fan/UGA fan line in the lower level.  I was with mostly older (40-55 years old) fans.  The Auburn Players families were also right in front of me.  I have been to every SEC schools stadium as a fan, and this game was one of the worst I have ever seen.  Not quite as bad as LSU but close.  Grown men yelling at the players parents?  I do not get that.  Throwing footballs as hard as possible into the Auburn Section, and at the band with intent to injure?  I always thought that AU/UGA was a friendly rivalry.  What happened?  I know that AU sucked it up, but come on.  Oh well, maybe our team can show some emotion next week and win

  • Agreed! (none / 0)

My weekend in Athens was just miserable. Damn, I've never seen people hate Auburn so much! I swear, I have never left a place feeling so loathed in my whole life. Before this weekend I would have said my worst experience at an SEC game was in Knoxville when I got cussed out by a bandmember and pushed by an old man; or in Florida when my car flag got set on fire. But this weekend was the worst! I'm not overreacting or being dramatic. My dad went to Bama so I'm familiar with friendly banter - this wasn't it! And I'm not just pissed that we lost. Even my "friends" that are UGA fans treated me like a parasite - and long before the game ever started. Of course I wasn't rude in return because I don't want to be that kind of Auburn representative. "Show your class not your a$$!" One day in Athens was enough to make me realize that going to Auburn was the best decision of my life! I thanked God the whole way home for it.

I sincerely hope that no one reading this has ever experienced this kind of treatment when you were in Auburn. If you have, I would like to apologize on behalf of all Auburn Alumni. And if any of you are ever in Auburn for a game, you are always welcome at my tailgate. And I swear to you, you will only be with friendly fans! I don't associate with people who make my school look bad. Others would be wise to do the same...

IT'S GREAT TO BE AN AUBURN TIGER!! WAR DAMN EAGLE!

  • To all auburn fans... (none / 0)

I am currently a student here at the Uiversity of Georgia and I humbly apoligize for whatever bad experiences you had here in Athens.  I did happen to notice that there was a unusually high amount of hostility in the air for last Saturday's game between the hedges, however, having tailgated downtown and in North Campus for the majority of that day, it seems that the bad experience that many of you had were perhaps isolated incidents.

I tailgated with many a Auburn fan during the day, had many nice, jovial conversations, and actually witnessed a large majority of your students partying it up downtown with our own until the wee hours of the morning.  If anything, I felt that the majority of the animocity I witnessed was aimed toward Georgia fans by Auburn fans, who seemed quite and understandably upset.  Yet, these events did not in anyway change my opinion of Auburn fans, who I actually find to be quite enjoyable to be around. Rather it simply looked bad upon those few who acted in such a immature way.  In the same way, this does not excuse those within our own fanbase who did act as poorly as they did of their wrongdoings, and I would hope that your fanbase would not be so quick to judge an entire groups simply because of the bad taste of a few.

I hope the Tigers can some how pull out of this slump they find themselves in, and just know that I will be chanting War Eagle every time you guys take the field from here on out.  GO DAWGS!!!

  • Are you serious? (none / 0)

Wow, so all it takes is a little dancing on the sidelines and you're ready to bust out the racially charged code words, huh? You are beyond delusional if you think that we Dawg fans are going to sit for a lecture on "class" or "character" from someone who refers to fellow human beings as "monkeys."

I debated over whether to respond to this whining at all, but this cretin "ArieGold" needs to be called out for what he is. For Auburn's sake I hope Jay has the good sense to scrub this diary and ban "ArieGold" permanently -- I have numerous friends who graduated from Auburn and whom I respect a great deal, and they deserve better than to be associated with this kind of garbage.

  • Ok (none / 0)

First of all, that would be censorship. I am sure that Doug is all about being angry when people say something he doesn't like and having what they said removed from the limelight. Second of all, there was nothing racist in my letter. I said the whole team, fans , and staff performed like circus monkeys. You know, the jumping around and waving towels, and dancing....that was acting like a bunch of circus monkeys. Doug, are you familiar with what monkeys do? They imitate each other and there is no order to what they do. That is what I meant, so stop trying to pin me as a racist you f*cking p*ssy.

    Thanks

  • Wow. (none / 0)

Amazing what an A** whipping will do to a fragile psyche.  Calling players "circus monkeys", accusing the Dawgs of dirty play... Reminding us poor, backward Georgia fans that despite our back to back canings of the Tigers, you still own us.  Calling folks that reply to your post "F**kin p**sies"  You're starting to sound like a Bammer:  In spite of all evidence to the contrary, we're better than you.

My wife and my best friends all went to Auburn and live in Birmingham.  I've come to expect better from your fan base when compared to the Bammers.  But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that you're just a ticked off fan and currently not representative of the Auburn nation.

I'll point you towards three things to help you figure out your current place in the world:  (1)The youtube video of the hit Hugh Nall put on Glenn Dorsey's knee.  (2)The back of Knowshon's head  (3)The soles of Knowshon's feet.

The first should remind you that those who live in glass houses...  Well, you know the rest.

The latter two should remind you that we just scored again.

If Ears leaves, could you do us Dawg fans a big favor and make sure the next HC keeps Muschamp?

    Cheers...

    • Listen doWg (none / 0)

If you want us to keep arguably the best defensive coordinator in the SEC/Nation because you don't want him to go back to UGA (I know you didn't insinuate that, but it could be guessed that's why you want us to keep him), then you need to look at the stats. You're right, Jawja put a good ol' whipping on us. Those 15 minutes from midway through the 3rd quarter to midway through the 4th quarter were brutal. But your defense this year has given up 35 to Tennessee, 34 to Troy, and 30 to Florida. You may have won two of those three games, but I'd take Muschamp giving up 13 to K-State, 7 to Arkansas, 17 to Florida, 3 to Ole Miss, etc. any day, even with the 45-point slaughter this past weekend.

  • Everyone just face it (none / 0)

Every team is going to have its nice fans, every team is going to have its rude fans. It's all a matter of luck of the draw and being in the right/wrong place at the right/wrong time when it comes to which group you're dealing with. I was at a tailgate somewhere on campus that my cousin took me to, and my ladyfriend and I were the only Auburn fans around, with around 100 UGA fans. We felt a little out of place, but we really didn't receive any negative feedback or anything nasty. Mostly good-natured ribbing.

Then, after the game, we ran into some obnoxious people, mostly students. If we had taken a different way back to the car, it would have been a different experience. It could have been worse, could have been better.

As an Auburn graduate and Auburn man, I feel like it is my duty to be as respectful and humble as I can, and try to ignore any hate-filled words toward myself or my University. I kept my cool the entire game, and although I sat right in the middle of the Georgia section (across the field from the Auburn band) I feel like the UGA fans around me respected my class, knowledge of the game, and passion (the kid behind me calling Gabe McKenzie a "retard because he goes to Auburn" for dropping a pass late in the 4th quarter notwithstanding). When the result was no longer in doubt, I didn't sit down and pout or leave the stadium. As I always do, I stayed until the very end, and watched every play.

It doesn't matter if you're at Georgia or Vanderbilt, you'll run into some a-holes, but you'll probably run into some kind people who wish you a safe trip home. I know I ran into both kinds of people on Saturday.

  • From a UGA alumnus (none / 0)

Once again, we have a disgruntled fan of the losing team, ArieGold, who had a really bad experience at a road game.  Such stories are rampant after every such trip, regardless of your school and regardless of the trip.  As PowerOfDixieland pointed out, this is just luck of the draw.

I know some great Auburn alumni, but my experiences in my trips to the Plains have included some really nasty encounters, especially when Georgia has won.  Assume what you will, but I'm a polite guy who doesn't even participate in "good-natured ribbing" with Auburn fans I don't know -- not that there's anything wrong with that.  No, the provocation I've thrown out there to get a Coke thrown on me by an Auburn fan, to have the hoses turned on me as I sat in the stands, the in-my-face yelling I've endured by random rednecks from Andalusia or Oneonta or wherever, consisted of nothing more than wearing red.

But I don't hold the conduct of the several a-hole Auburn students and fans and staff I've encountered over the years (with startling consistency) against the school or fanbase as a whole.

And the "circus monkeys" comment was way out of line.  I've got to agree with Doug on that one.  And late hits?  Please.  A program with Auburn's history and national reputation has no room to call anyone out on suspect behavior.

We all have had terrible experiences in road trips, whether they were to Auburn, Tuscaloosa, Clemson, or Baton Rouge.  Making broad, sweeping judgments about a school, its team, and its fans based on those experiences after your team suffered such a beat-down smacks of cry-baby sour grapes.  Man up.

  • Apology (none / 0)

I apologize for the implied language, but I will not apologize for stating a fact. Georgia was classless in their victory on Saturday night, and the game turned into a CIRCUS. I stand by what I said. Thanks

  • Fine ArieGold... (none / 0)

...if what you meant by a Circus was that aweful display of quarterbacking put on by Brandon Cox's, then you would be right (just some playful ribbing, please don't go writing another diary blasting my integrity, put a bag of flaming poop on my front porch, beat my cat, or whatever your angry soul wants to do to my 'classless' UGA self) . But seriously, if you get upset about our players pumping up a crowd by waving towles in the air, and dancing on the sidelines, I would hate to see how angry you would get when Alabama players high five each other on the field next week.

I can see how you could get your panties in a wad if our players on the field were taunting your team after a big play, but seriously,  ON THE SIDELINES???  Stop fooling yourself and admit that your overgeneralizations are just absurd.  What would happen if I saw what your place kicker did at Ben-Griffith Stadium after he kicked the game winner (or did you turn a blind eye to his obvious taunting of the Florida bench when he did the gator chomp in their direction?) and then surmised that, since he is obviously acting in a moment of high excitement, he and the rest of the Auburn players are thus a troupe of trained circus monkey? Does this train of thought, which you are implementing in your above statement, sound idiotic?  It sure sounds like it to me.

Lets hope that your common sense eventually overrides your dissapointment, and that you learn to accept a lose like the gentlemen I know you probably are.

  • Isolated incidents?? (none / 0)

I usually just read posts and here and never respond, but I have to here. These were not isolated incidents. I went to Florida and LSU this year as I am in the band and Georgia was by far the place we were treated with the least respect. Isolated incidents are ones that happened at Florida and LSU...a few stupid fans that yelled obscenities or other crap. Nothing was ever thrown at us.

In Athens, we were booed when we took the field at halftime, pelted with debris as we came off the field, had ice and footballs thrown at us while in the stands, multiple men, not students, cussing us out, people trying to start stuff on our walk back to the buses...the list goes on.  I heard plebty of other stories from other fans as well. I was told that Georgia was a friendly rivalry, so I looked forward to visiting Athens. Now I've lost a lot of respect for their fans.

And Mark Richt going fo it on 4th and 1 up by 18? Just a little classless.

It was not isolated fans. Every school has it's idiots, but Georgia had a lot more than any other I've seen. War eagle and looking forward to next year, because it's become personal now.

    • No one booed the Auburn band (none / 0)

Don't flatter yourself.  The boos were for the officiating crew as they were leaving the field not for Auburn's band taking the field at halftime.

From my seats, though, I could see some foam footballs being thrown in the Auburn band's direction, and I was seriously disappointed in that.  I'm not sure whose bright idea it was to hand out projectiles at the gates, but even so, that was no call to hurl them at anybody.  I'd take a foam football to the head over the Coke that was dumped on me at Jordan-Hare (did I mention I was 14 when it happened?) any day.

Going for it on 4th and 1 when up by 18 with 12 minutes left to play is classless?  You've got to be kidding.  How was Richt to know that the Tigers were going to continue their downward slide in the game instead of turning it around somehow?

Auburn has always been the most inhospitable place to visit among the dozens of road trips I've taken to a dozen or so locations (North Avenue, Atlanta, is a close second, but the Jackets get a little bit of a pass since Tech isn't really set up to teach kids how to interact with society).

I have assumed that my experiences in and around Jordan-Hare and the ones I've heard about were just idiot Auburn fans showing out on game day.  I still think that's the case.  But if you find it appropriate to judge an entire school by such crap, then by your own standards, Auburn really is the A**hole of Dixieland as your fight song proclaims (what? you mean there are alternative lyrics?).

Or, perhaps, you'll figure out some day that regrettable instances can happen anywhere.  Maybe you lucked out and Athens will always be the worst place to visit for you.  I know lots of Auburn alumni with a lot more travel experience than you who see things differently.  It's just the way it goes.

I also saw plenty of Auburn fans having a great time in the Classic City before and after the game until late into the night.  It sure as hell looked like they were happy to be in Athens, enjoying all that a great college town has to offer.

But by all means, make it personal.  It'll make the rivalry fun for you.

      • The band was booed (none / 0)

I know that at the beginning of halftime, many people were booing the refs, and that Richt was giving them an earful. But people behind me booed when our stadium announcer said something like "Now here's the Auburn University Marching Band." It wasn't as out of hand as I've seen or it could have been, but there were people doing it.

And while you're talking about fight songs, and class, can you explain to me why your crowd has a mass cheer telling the other school to go to hell, as in at the end of "Glory" singing "And to hell with Au-u-burn"? (And seriously, why don't you just say Auburn U. insteady of stretching out Auburn into three syllables...it would be more emphatic that way) I've heard it on TV before, and at different UGA games, you do it to everybody. I always thought you were supposed to spell out Georgia, a la us spelling out Auburn. Instead you wish upon our team eternal damnation.

        • I did sing "Auburn U" (none / 0)

"To hell with [insert opponent here]" is tradition.  It's been that way for well over 50 years.  Personally, I think the true words to the fight song should be "And to hell with Georgia Tech" regardless of whom we're playing, but that's just me.  It's a song: Glory to Ol' Georgia, and to hell with Georgia Tech.  See how that works out?  Georgia? Give 'em glory.  Tech? Give 'em hell.

I've also been known to say "Around the bowl and down the hole, Roll Tide Roll", but I don't really want JP Wilson to be flushed down a toilet.

And yes, I heard boos when I was a Redcoat visiting opponents' stadiums.  I'm not reading anything here about Athens that isn't just as applicable to anywhere else.  I think the beat-down has clouded a lot of judgment among some Auburn fans.  And note, that's "some" Auburn fans, since there are plenty who had a great time in Athens, outside of or in spite of watching their team's meltdown.

We all hear these stories year after year about Gainesville, Baton Rouge, and Columbia.  It's somehow more significant when it happens to us at a disappointing game.  That's understandable.  But it's all a matter of perspective.  When did Auburn fans get to be such delicate flowers?

        • Oh, good Lord (none / 0)

mdatau, doesn't your fight song include the words "Give 'em hell, give 'em hell, stand up and yell"? And doesn't the "Weagle, Weagle" cheer instruct the team to "kick 'em in the butt"?

Seriously, this is getting downright childish. If "To hell with Auburn" offends your sensibilities so much, maybe you just shouldn't go to games anymore. Perhaps you could give up your tickets to someone with a thicker skin -- I know plenty of people (on both the Auburn and Georgia sides) who would be happy to take those tickets, and I think they'd manage to have a much better time at the game than you did.

          • OK (none / 0)

For one thing, I wasn't necessarily complaining. You guys were retorting with some things that you've seen from Auburn that you think is classless, so I shot back at you. My skin is plenty thick enough to deal with any sort of taunting, I've been to LSU and Alabama on several occasions, as well as Georgia.

Secondly, don't you see a marked difference between "Giving someone hell" and telling them to go "to hell"? The two cheers that you mention are definitely pro-Auburn cheers, and really never say anything negative about the other school. When you tell my school to go to hell, that is something negative about my school.

If you ask me, that's where it crosses the line. I will cheer as hard as I can every play for Auburn to succeed, but I won't say/cheer nasty or negative things toward the other team. The reason I'm at a game is to cheer my team to play its best, not to wish some sort of malady on the other team.

And finally, a funny little story to try and diffuse the situation, because this has gotten far worse than I intended it. And please know that this is one of those "isolated incidents" we've been referring to, not a "mass cheer": Several years ago we were playing Western Kentucky (in Auburn, obviously) and I was walking around the stadium getting ready to go in. There were two Western Kentucky fans, clad in red, walking a little bit in front of me. There was this tailgate a little ways ahead, and one of the guys at that tailgate had clearly had too much to drink, and he stood up and got right in the WKU fans' faces and said "To hell with Georgia!!" obviously forgetting what game he was at. I thought it was hilarious, not because that's what I also felt, but because he was so stupid drunk he forgot who we were playing. Several Auburn people came and got him and kind of told him he was being an idiot, and the situation was diffused.

            • I was not trying to start an argument there (none / 0)

Sorry, I won't flatter myself. I'm aware the fans were booing the officials. AFTER that, when we marched on, there were boos. It's just that even at LSU, the fans were respectful. In all reality, this isn't about the band, it was just a point that we were the target of a variety of classless acts.

4th and 1, with 12 minutes to play, up 18, when a 43 yard field goal would have put you up by 21?. I see your point, but a 21 point lead with 12 minutes left would have been plenty.

I've never heard that Auburn is the most inhospitable place to play in the SEC. In fact, I've heard that is is the most hospitable. There is no reason, when we are arguing about class, to make comments like "But if you find it appropriate to judge an entire school by such crap, then by your own standards, Auburn really is the A**hole of Dixieland as your fight song proclaims (what? you mean there are alternative lyrics?)." That's real classy right there.

Oh, and NCT, I'm not a little kid. "Maybe someday" I'll figure out there are a-hole fans everywhere. Well duh. We have them, I'm not going to lie to myself. And I'm pretty sure the entire Auburn fan base took that loss personally...we got killed.

Doug, I could care less about lyrics. I never complained about that, and I don't know why you directed that at me.

Regardless, we got our butt whooped, it sucked, we move on. Alabama in two weeks, and next year, we come back and do it again. Everybody relax.

              • Well, that's the thing (none / 0)

I really am sorry you had a bad time in Athens, mdatau.  Seriously.  The seven years I spent in school there (and yes, I got two degrees -- I wasn't that much of a slacker) were incredible.  I have visited lots and lots of college towns over the years, and Athens is tops (along with Chapel Hill, Charlottesville, Madison).  I've taken friends with no connection to the school, and they are blown away at what a cool town it is.  I want people to have a good time when they visit, and as I said, there were orange-clad folks all over town whooping it up and soaking it all in.  I'm sorry you couldn't be one of them.

You said "I've heard that [Auburn] is the most hospitable [place to play in the SEC]."  Great.  I've heard that trips to Athens are the best for visiting fans.  Is someone lying to you?  To me?  No, probably not.  Experiences differ.

I honestly didn't mean to insult you by suggesting you were a little kid.  You said you were in the band, so I assume you're a student.  I'm 41, and most of the Auburn grads I know are from 35 to 70.  Things that happened to me when I was 21 meant something different then from what they mean now.  I just meant to suggest that if you're a student, you've got a relatively small sample of experiences to work with, and over time as the sample gets larger, the conclusions you base on them might change.

Obviously, I couldn't back down from a challenge over "class" and obnoxiousness.  I will not concede that UGA is somehow especially bad in that regard, and you may forever believe that it is.  Again, experiences differ, and I think it's worth recognizing that fact before you get all worked up.

And finally, if you're offended by the "A**hole of Dixieland" comment, I'll decline to offer you the entire lyrics (composed by my brother when he was at Georgia Tech, and those guys are about as obnoxious as it gets).  But they're really funny.

Doug, if you see this and want the full version, let me know.  I'll see you at HJS.

                • It's fine... (none / 0)

No hard feelings. Honestly, I liked Athens, just not the fans. Most people I know love the place and say it has the same small college town feel like we have here.

I've been to LSU, Florida, Ole Miss, Alabama, South Carolina, and Georgia now on away trips. I'm a sophomore, so I guess I have a ways to go in terms of experiencing everything. Georgia was just the worst one so far, and that may well be a result of losing.

Emotion over football gets the best of me a lot of times, especially after a loss like that. Every school has people who do things that reflect bad on their school, and I'm obviously biased towards Auburn when I say that we have hospitable fans. We have jerks too. It's hard to get an intimidating atmosphere without crossing the line and some people go too far.

I'm not offended by those lyrics, but no, I don't want to see them haha. Good luck the rest of the way . We have to go focus on Alabama.

  • Response (none / 0)

I am an Auburn Grad who lives in Atlanta with my wife who is a UGA Grad.  We have enjoyed each campus with no problem for the last 5 years.  We have a circle of friends from all SEC schools who get along as well as you can imagine when it comes to SEC Football.  If you are in an opposing teams town, you cant expect nothing to happen and hopefully you will run into some class people.  If not just simply ignore them.  Unless they are total iditots, I have found if you turn around and smile to wish them a good game they will feel pretty stupid.

    • Thanks (none / 0)

Thanks for the insight. You are a gentleman and a scholar. The only reason I brought up these things was because I was so angry with the way Richt is allowing his team to act. He was one of the best coaches and classy coaches. I am disappointed with him. That was the message I was trying to get across. Not that UGA is a terrible place!
