Tuberville Headed To Arkansas?

By Jay Coulter
jccoulter@gmail.com

Numerous media outlets in Arkansas are reporting tonight that Tommy Tuberville has agreed to become the new Razorback head coach.

Matt Turner of KWNA reports that "multiple sources tell KNWA that Auburn's Tommy Tuberville will be Arkansas' next head football coach."

Update 9:20 p.m. CT: Here's another report from KFSM in Ft. Smith, Arkansas...

"Various sources tell 5NEWS that such a deal may be close but it isn't a sure thing.  Sources say Cowboy's owner Jerry Jones has been a major player in the brokerage of a deal.  Jones is reportedly not only agreeing to cough up money to get Tuberville but to pay his assistants top money as well."

Update 9:37 p.m. : Is this a crazy night or what? We still have no firm confirmation other than what's being reported in Arkansas. Tuberville said this a few hours ago on his weekly radio show (from al.com)...

Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville said Thursday he's not going to rush through his negotiations with university officials toward a new contract despite "a sense of urgency outside in the public eye, but contracts take forever."

Tuberville also told his weekly Tiger Talk radio audience that "I'm not looking to go anywhere."

The taped interview came as various Arkansas media outlets reported Thursday night that Tuberville is on the verge of signing a contract with the Razorbacks. A source who talked to Tuberville on Thursday evening denied the reports.

"We're not going to run and jump through this," Tuberville said. "I'm looking to make sure that people understand for us to get better, this program needs to take some steps in some areas for us to improve."

Tuberville also said, "What we've done - and what we'll probably do for another week - is sit down and look at the best circumstances for this team and program. There are a lot of variables you need to look."

Update 9:52 p.m. : ESPN’s Jim Donnan reports Tommy Tuberville has not accepted the Arkansas job.  Len Pasqarelli reports Tub’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, also denies Tub is going to Fayetteville.

Update 10:13 p.m. : Here's another story from Arkansas360.com. Thanks to Bodagetta for the lead...

No contract is signed, but Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville appears to be considering an offer to become the Arkansas Razorbacks' next football coach, multiple sources tell ArkansasSports360.com.

However, sources in Alabama claim that Tuberville says he has not spoken with Arkansas officials about the job. Tuberville was in Arkansas on Thursday on a duck hunting trip with a close friend from Helena. Birmingham sportswriter Charles Goldberg also reported on his blog that a source said Tuberville had not talked with Arkansas.

Any official announcement may not come until Saturday, and perhaps not until Monday The sources who believe the deal is close with Tuberville still say negotiations continue for some of Tuberville's wishes concerning assistant coaches pay and other details about football operations.

Other organizations are also now reporting it, including KNWA-TV in Fayetteville.

The 53-year-old Tuberville, a native of Camden, was the finalist for the Arkansas job in 1997 when the position eventually went to Houston Nutt. Nutt left the job Monday, after 10 years, to become head football coach at Ole Miss. Tuberville was Ole Miss' coach at the time Arkansas first came courting. He left Ole Miss for Auburn after the 1998 season.

Two members of the Board of Trustees who asked not to be named told AS360.com late Thursday night that they knew nothing of the dealings with Tuberville.

Update 10:32 p.m. : There continues to be conflicting reports flying around the internet tonight. Is there something to it? When the mainstream media reports it, you have to take it serious. In the last hour or so we've had media reports going both ways - some saying he's gone, others saying not so fast. We'll continue to monitor the situation tonight and bring you any updates we get.

Updated Friday, 5:43 a.m. : We are still waiting on Tommy Tuberville to make a comment regarding multiple reports that he's going to be the next head coach at Arkansas. He's due back in Auburn today.

Last night, athletic director Jay Jacobs said he still expects Tuberville to be the head coach at Auburn.

"I don’t see anything changing," Jacobs told the Opelika-Auburn News Thursday night. "I’m looking forward to Tommy being the coach at Auburn for a long, long time."

Jacobs also said Arkansas officials hadn’t contacted him for permission to speak with Tuberville. Tuberville’s contract requires any school interested in Tuberville to receive permission from Jacobs before negotiating with the coach.

Another source close to the negotiations said the reports are "just rumors" and that Tuberville has not accepted an offer from Arkansas. Tuberville’s Auburn contract currently runs through 2011. He is slated to make an average of $3.1 million over the next four years. (From Opelika-Auburn News)

We'll continue to monitor events as they happen.

Media Frenzy

.....I can't imagine Jerry Jones shelling out for Tubs. Heck, after Jimmy Johnson left, who'd he hire to coach the Cowboys? Switzer, Gailey, then Parcells, and now the venerable Wade Phillips. Parcells was arguably the only high-dollar guy, and he was out of coaching at the time.

.....Frankly, it worried me how the papers are just printing stuff willy-nilly, now. And, they're lifting lines from blogs like this one, and even commenters. It's like how the World Weekly News was printing that the world would end on this past Thanksgiving Day. The line is blurring rapidly. Me, I've got a good fiction section at my local Homewood Public Library. I don't need this indigestion from my "news" feed!

I dont buy it.

Why would he take the Arkansas job with the turnover of that roster and (More importantly) the LSU job about to open up?

If he's using the job as leverage to get us to big against ourselves I've got two words:

Coach. Petrino.

If you dont think he wants out I've got four more words  for you.

Starting.  Quarterback. Joey. Harrington.

Take a deep breath.......

relax. Rationale would still say Tubbs will stay where he is wanted and can win. Arkansas is almost Ole Miss. A great coach would do well to compete for the West there more than 1 out of 3 or 4 years. He has a powerhouse at Auburn. And the fanbase and boosters at Arkansas are delusional at best, psychotic might be a better description. I don't think Tubby has that much motivation to leave AU.  And if Gogue and Jacobs are failing to elevate him to the new payscale and gambling on his loyalty then I say Gogue needs to be thumped and Jacobs run out of town tarred and feathered.

Tommy's new contract

I've heard from various people that in Tubberville's new contract there is a stipulation about his coaching staff. The stipulation is that he cannot hire or fire any coach without the ok of the athletic director. Tubb's isn't happy about this. Borges has long been a favorite of everybody's favorite booster Bobby Lowder. Its been going around for awhile that Tommy is interested in getting rid of Borges and this just seems like Lowder manipulating things to get his way, yet again. Don't know about y'all but i'm getting sick of Lowder sticking his nose in where it doesn't belong. It's a shame he just can't be like Boone Pickens and donate money for the good of the program and keep his mouth shut. Instead he wants to play athletic director.

It's all business.....
Realizing there probably is some truth stuck deep in all the rumors. This is still a business arrangement for TT and his family (including coaching family). He has to be interested in knowing what Arkansas has to offer, regardless if he is interested. He also has to use this opportunity to improve his, his coaches, and Auburn value. I firmly believe this is going to be a good thing for Auburn when it's over. Better facilities, better pay for TT & coaches, longer contracts, and ultimately a more attractive football program for recruits...so sit back and let this unfold and it will be a positive for Auburn Football.

Reason for leaving

The only real reason for Tuberville to leave is Lowder. Tuberville can get the money and facilities he wants right here, so I don't see that as motivation to go elsewhere. Being sick and freekin' tired of dealing with Lowder, is motivation.

Having said that, the flip side is that Tuberville already beat Lowder. He survived Jetgate and went undefeated the next year, which was as big a victory over Lowder as you could get. Every year Tuberville stays is a slap in Lowder's face.

I

believe we are safe. A good Source on our Radio Talk Show here in Fla. where, I reside announced this Morning, he had duck hunted with Tommy, and knew the old Arkansas boy, And that Tommy had Text messaged him and told him he had no intentions of leaving Auburn. Of Course we all know "Money" talks and bull-$h## walks, but until we here the announcement from Tommy himself which, he does have until Dec. 31. there is no need to listen to MEDIA RUMOR, or HYPE.
I personally believe Tommy is still DA-MAN and has brought our Auburn Football Team from nothing to something over the past nine years. I am Very proud of our Team as a whole.
Only the Head Coach "Upstairs" and Tommy know what the real truth is and, where Tommy's Future is with Us.

Latest Scoop
**Sources out of Arkansas tell us that Razorback boosters have raised the $6 million to buyout Tommy Tuberville's contract and will offer a contract valued around $31.5 million over 10 years. They are waiting for an answer from Tuberville and have not received any guarantee that he will accept.

*Sources out of Baton Rouge also tell us that LSU boosters are in talks with Tuberville's agent, Jimmy Sexton, and are also interested. If Tuberville cannot reach an agreement with Auburn or Arkansas, the LSU job is a definite possibility. Tuberville could also try and delay talks with AU and UA to give LSU more time to come up with an offer.

*Tuberville is expected to return to Auburn this afternoon and speak with AU officials about their contract proposal. Sources indicate that this afternoon's talks will be pivotal in whether Tuberville remains as AU's head coach.

*Sources indicate AU is prepared to offer a contract to Tuberville that will give him most of what he's asked for including:

1. An extension that will up his contract to six years and include a 200K increase each year. The contract would make him a $4 million dollar coach by year six.
2. Refurbish the weight room and training table.
3. Offer three options to Tuberville on building an indoor practice facility.

*This source said the only thing AU is not willing to negotiate is Tuberville's $6 million buyout. Tuberville wants it eliminated but AU is standing firm.

*Tuberville mentioned facilities in a taped statement that aired on Tiger Talk last night:

"I want everybody, not just our administration but also our fans, to understand we are at a point and if we are going to get to another point we can't keep on as is. You have got to make changes, facilities. You have got to have a plan. A plan has to be intact," said Tuberville.

*It should be pointed out that Auburn has facility plans intact that already included nearly $5 million to renovate the locker rooms, assistant coach offices and add additional office space to the athletic department in the coming months. AU just completed over $30 million in renovations of Jordan-Hare Stadium the last three years and is investing $92.5 million into a new basketball arena.

**Stay tuned to AuburnSports.com as we role out all the scoop as it come in. If need be we'll have several more War Room Special Editions throughout the day.
