It's Official: Tony Franklin Named New Offensive Coordinator

By Jay Coulter
jccoulter@gmail.com

I picked one hell of a week to take a vacation from Track’em Tigers. What was I thinking? With a football season as crazy as this one, I should have known things would stay that way into December.

Auburn made the worst kept secret in the state official tonight. Troy offensive coordinator Tony Franklin was named Auburn’s coordinator a few hours ago. It looks like another solid move for the Tigers and Coach Tommy Tuberville.

Franklin is officially on staff now and will be in charge of the offense when Auburn faces Clemson on New Year’s Eve.

Don’t expect to see the Tigers come out in a no huddle spread offense right away – although after this season, I can’t say I would be shocked.

This is going to be a pretty drastic change to the Auburn offense. It should be interesting. Say what you will, but Franklin’s resume is impressive. He’s very popular among high school coaches around the country.

Many have made the pilgrimage to his offensive camps over the past couple of years. They all want to know how to run the spread. Hopefully, these relationships will pay dividends in recruiting.

Here’s the official announcement from the University:

Tony Franklin, who served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the past two seasons at Troy, has been named offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Auburn, announced head coach Tommy Tuberville Wednesday.

Franklin, who also spent four years at the University of Kentucky, helped both programs achieve a high level of offensive success.

"Tony has had a tremendous amount of success offensively in the Southeastern Conference and during his most recent position at Troy," Tuberville said. "He teaches an exciting brand of offense that has posted some very impressive numbers, statistically. We're excited to have him on staff and look forward to having him get started with us during preparations for the Chick-fil-A Bowl."

During his tenure at Troy, Franklin helped lead the Trojans to back-to-back eight-win seasons, consecutive Sunbelt Conference Co-Championships and a New Orleans Bowl victory in 2006.

Troy's offense, which was last in the conference in total offense prior to his arrival, was second in the Sun Belt in 2006 and was first in the league in total offense (452.8 ypg) and scoring offense (34.0 ppg) this season. Nationally in 2007, his offense was 17th in total offense and 25th in scoring offense.

"I'm looking forward to the opportunity to return to the Southeastern Conference and work with an outstanding program at Auburn," Franklin said. "I'm very appreciative of Coach Tuberville for giving me the chance to serve as Auburn's offensive coordinator and I'm excited about getting started and working with the coaching staff and players.

"I'd also like to thank (Troy) Coach Larry Blakeney and the Troy family for the opportunity they provided me during the last two years."

Under Franklin's direction, Troy quarterback Omar Haugabook was the Sunbelt Conference Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year in 2006. Haugabook repeated as the Sunbelt Offensive Player of the Year in 2007.

Franklin, 50, coached four years at the University of Kentucky from 1997-2000, where he was the Wildcats' running backs coach from 1997-99 before serving as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach during the 2000 season.

While at Kentucky, Franklin helped lead the Wildcats to consecutive bowl appearances (1998-99) for the first time in 15 years and their first New Year's Day bowl game (1999 Outback Bowl) in 50 seasons.

Named one of the top 10 recruiters in the South during his tenure in Lexington, Franklin's offense in 2000 finished second nationally in passing offense and 11th in the country in total offense.

In 2003, Franklin was the general manager and head coach of the expansion franchise Lexington Horsemen football team in their inaugural season in the National Indoor Football League.

Prior to his stint at Kentucky, he coached 16 years on the high school level for seven schools.

Franklin was a two-year letterman at Murray State, from 1976-77, where he played running back. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Murray State in 1979 and 1989, respectively.

A native of Princeton, Ky., Franklin and his wife, Laura, have three daughters, Chelsea (22), Caroline (20), and Caitlin (18).

Tony Franklin is........

over all a good hire. I worry about the transition period that will take place learning a new offense and terminology. But at least the players that are in place should shine in a spread offense provided they can pick up the scheme quickly. We are loaded with speed in the skill positions as well as a very solid offensive line. Another upside is the spread offense is known as a "system" that can make a hero out of an average quarterback (think Danny Wuerfell). I am saddened by the loss of Borges as I think we would have been very good with his offense next year but what is done is done. I hope Coach Borges has great success at his next position. I for one will be very anxious to see the spring game.

The spread offense?

I can't see Auburn allowing Tony Franklin any room to play with here, Auburn just hates scoring points too much to allow a 34 to 40 ppg average.  I see Tubberville, or whoever makes the call, to really stifle Franklin's offense next year and then blaming on the players not picking up the offense quickly enough.

WTF?

Dude! What the heck? We all know that the offense suffered because Tubs ordered Borges not to lose games. I have also heard from several media outlets that Borges' offenses had become too predictable. Lets wait and see what happens, I still don't see where your getting your info. 2004 and 2005 Auburn was the number 1 offense in the SEC. 2006, WE were 9th, and this year we were ninth. 101 respectively. It's not like Tubs doesn't like offensive output....Geez

Adenundum

I forgot to insert that granted Borges did have an inferior quarterback to work with....Sorry Brandon...but you know how it is..

Offense

Where do you people come up with this crap?

ArieGold is right.  Tuberville brought in Borges because the West Coast offense was the way to go at the time.  Do you forget the 2004 season?  Do you forget how well we played in '05?  Yes, we had a great backfield, but, we had the same backfield in '03 when jetgate happened.  So, what was the diffence?  The diffenence was Tubberville brought in Borges with new schemes.

And let us not forget that Tuberville brought in Petrino, who many of you wanted back.  Do you forget what his offense is?  Tuberville didn't fire Petrino, he left to take an HC job.

So, you bammers that are pretending to be Auburn fans on this blog, go back to your 4 million dollar man and his great discipline tactics.  It really helped bammer this year.

Thanks for the input, Bammer.

Blame the players? Who are we talking about here, Saban?

The athletes at Troy say...

Franklin is a hard a** and has a very strong will and is very temperamental at times and is not much of a player's coach. If this is true, then it will be interesting to see the dynamics between "THE Coach", Franklin and the athletes.

Just put up some points and everything will be just fine.

I don't know where the Negative Nancy attitude is coming from. I'm not sure who you know on the inside who told you Auburn "hates" scoring points.  I think it may be more like Borges ran his offense conservatively this season because he didn't have the play-makers he would've liked. I'm not sure there are any teams in college football who are against getting in the end zone. As for the spread offense it will be interesting to see how Franklin blends this with hard-nosed Auburn football. After all this is still Running Back University. At the end of the day Tubs is a defensive coach, he leaves the offense in the hands of the coordinator. What should really be a worry is the QB situation and how we are going to get all of the backs involved. The learning curve is what it is so lets just hope they (Burns) can pick it up quick. I sure hope

...that Franklin doesn't try to mess around too much in the next two weeks with the offense to totally confuse these guys.  It's been a long season and we don't need to have total havoc during the bowl game.  Keep it simple until after the season...

Can anyone shed some light into how much Troy ran the ball this year?

Interesting article...

Thanks, James.  It answered a lot of my questions.  They ran about a 55-45 pass/run split.  I don't want to abandon running the ball--not with our backs.  It's what put Auburn on the map, and I'm not ready to look like Hawaii just yet.  I'd be happy with a 55-45 run/pass split.  I'm sure Tubs will do some fine tuning.

55-45 split

I read some more on the spread offense and there are many different versions.  One version being the spread offense running game.  The main thing about the spread is to "spread" your offense across the field, thus spreading the defense thin.

I work with a guy that is a big Troy fan (he went to school there) and he really like the offense.  They had the oppotunity to score every time they got the ball.

If you will rememebr when Franklin was at Kentucky, he had two quarterbacks that were not mobile: those two being Jared Lorenzin and Tim Couch.  He also had a couple of running backs that were real good.

Correct me if i am wrong, but isn't the Patriot's and Colt's offense a version of the spread.  Those two versions get the ball into the tailbacks hands quite often in the running and passing game.  Personnally, I lke those two offenses.

Tempermental?

.....He'll fit right in. Yelling is part of football practice. An offensive coach with passion is a good thing! We'll have to run the ball some. We'll have five capable runners, or at least that's what I said last spring...

.....I'd like to see Mario Fannin involved in the slot or at wingback. That stuff was looking good this year, till they shelved it for UGA and Bama. And if we can develop Chris Slaughter and Tim Hawthorne, we'll have some pretty decent receivers to put out there. Smith, Billings and Dunn all return, too. Those guys need to be out on the field, though, January 2, working with that ball-cannon. We've GOT to catch the ball, to make the spread work!

Have I missed something?

Or has there been a deafening silence regarding Will Muschamp since the Petrino hire? What's going on? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

When Southern Miss .......

hires a head coach and Muschamp is still at AU I will sigh with relief. Until then, ssssssssssssuuuuuuuppp.......I'm holding my breath.

Ready... exhale!

.....They're looking at the Cowboy O. C, according to the Jackson paper:

When.......

he's signed on the dotted line. Its been too crazy in the coaching carousel to feel warm and fuzzy just yet. Man, what a crazy coach swapping season! And, yeah, it won't hurt to have a screaming "rah rah" guy on the offensive side of the ball.

Foxsports.com is reporting

,,,that the new coach at Southern Miss is Larry Fedora.

Pillip Marshall writes about Muschamp... kind of

At his Tracking the Tigers blog he talks to Muschamp about coaching his defense for a spread offense. No talk about staying or leaving. There's no signing on the dotted line, but he is talking about next year's Auburn defense.

Still have my fingers crossed.
