Muschamp To Texas?

By Jay Coulter
jccoulter@gmail.com

Here we go again. News has leaked out tonight that Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp is in Texas interviewing for the same position with the Longhorns.

The Dallas Morning News is reporting this evening that a deal could be reached quickly. According to the paper's website, Muschamp would call the defensive plays but would be a co-coordinator with Duane Akina, who would continue to coach the secondary.

You will remember that former Auburn defensive coordinator Gene Chizik bolted for Texas following the undefeated 2004 season.

What a difference a few days make. Following the win over Clemson on Monday, Muschamp said that "Anyone out there that wants to be a winner needs to become an Auburn Tiger."

I don’t know about you, but this is starting to stick in my craw. There’s no question Texas has its advantages being the state school in one of the biggest football factories in America.

But what does a move to Texas do for you if you are Muschamp? For Gene Chizik, it meant a head coaching job at Iowa State, better known as the Vanderbilt of the Big 12. At this point we have to assume that Auburn will match whatever Texas is offering in terms of money.

Maybe I’m a naïve Auburn homer, but I believe Muschamp could land the same quality head coaching job from Auburn that he could from Texas.

You can bet this isn’t sitting well with Tommy Tuberville. My guess is that if Muschamp flew to Austin to interview, then he’s likely gone.

If this proves to be true, it’s a huge blow to Auburn heading into 2008.  Winning the SEC with two new coordinators will be a tall task even with the talent the Tigers have returning.

New on Muscamp

Any news on Muschamp, reports from the TX site has him going. I hope not that is going to suck if it is true.

Distraught Amongst Other Things

Why does Mack Brown deem it necessary to steal our coordinators away? All I can say is that I hope beyond all hope that Auburn gets Texas in a bowl game next year. Those big, corn-fed punks from the Big 12 deserve a major dosage of SEC speed.

Aside form all that, I have a HUGE man-crush on Muschamp(as do most Auburn people who follow football closely) I admit!!! I think he is a genuis, and I wish him the best. Hopefully, in 2-3 years, we will come beckoning with an offer to make him our HC.

Until that day.....

I don't understand

,,,,why Muschamp would leave Auburn to take a similar position somewhere else, for about the same money.  He has said that Tubs is the best coach he has ever worked for and he is making a great salary.

If Muschamp were going to leave because of the money, the Southern Miss job should have been paying more than what he is making at Auburn or would make at Texas.

If this was a head coaching position, that would be OK, but, since it isn't, if I were Tubs, this wouldn't be sitting well with me.  I would be thinking I just went to bat for you and got you a pretty good raise, and this is how you re-pay me?  You are thinking about leaving for a similar position?  Nope, it just wouldn't go over to big with me.

The media, even ESPN, has started saying the SEC is the toughest conference.  If Muschamp's defense, in the SEC, could contribute to a championship run, wouldn't that say more about his coaching abilities?

The whole thing about Texas being the place to be really chaps my ***.

Muschamp

While I think Muschamp has done a good job at Auburn, I am not naive enough to believe he is solely the reason that we have a good defense. All the coaches must recruit good quality players that fit the system and scheme. Secondly, the players must make the plays and make them regularly. It is important to have good instruction, however, if this coach decides to leave, lets wish him well and get someone to replace him and move on. No big deal. I hope he stays,'cause he is good, but its not the end of the world.

Of course

,,,,it takes the whole coaching staff and the players, but it also takes a great coordinator to bring it all together and be a good leader.  If it wasn't a factor, then it wouldn't matter to anybody who they had.

My point is, why is Texas suppose to be the greatest place to be.  The big 12 isn't the best or toughest conference.  Sure, they have a great recruiting base, but like I said in my last post, if you can win a championship in the toughest conference, the SEC, then doesn't that say more about your abilities.

Auburn has taken a beating from the media (read that as ESPN) for years and schools like Texas, Oklahoma, Southern Cal, and Ohio St. are the media darlings because they win so many games.  All of these schools play in conferences that allow each school to play weak schedules and this allows them to win games.  This gets them high in the rankings early in the year, which means they have a better shot at the national championship.

Auburn, on the other hand, plays in the toughest conference which means they have a tough schedule every year.  Take 2004 for example, we actually played a pretty tough schedule, except for Citadel.  And we, basically, got stuck with them at the last minute.  Oklahoma got the shot at the National Championship against Southern Ca.  Neither one of those teams played a hard schedule, but yet, they are the media darlings.  And what happened, Oklahoma got toasted.  Auburn may not have won the NC, but they deserved the chance more than Oklahoma.  Oklahoma hasn't won a BCS game in over 4 years.

Now, the media says that Texas is a better place to be a coordinator.  Well, to me, the only reason it would be a better place is because the media has made it that way.  Texas is dry and brown.  Even the orange that Texas wears is dull

Auburn is a great place. It is in the best state in the nation.

If Muschamp leaves, I know Coach Tubs will find us another great defensive coordinator.  I just hate to loose another coordiantor to a place like Texas.

Texas may not be

the best move for Muschamp.  His style of defense needs the speed of the SEC.  He won't get that speed initially at Texas and there will also be a learning curve with a new school (administration, alumni, boosters and such) and therefore not experience the same success, therefore slowing down his momentum to become a HC one day.  Will, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  The enemy of better is best.  You were close to landing a HC position this year, next year if you take the pool of talent that you have at Auburn and make a good run at it in '08, then you are certain to land somewhere as a HC in the next year or two.  Head to Texas and there will be an expectation for you to put your 3-5 years in there as an assistant and you may miss a big opportunity to win a conference championship or even, dare I say, a national one.  Knowing all of this I can't see why a college would want him as an assistant, because he's just going to 'bolt' at the first opportunity.  But hey, what do I know?  Either way (stay or go), good luck to you and thanks for your contribution.  Having Auburn on your resume will always be a good thing.  Auburn was great before you showed up with your hat in your hand and we will be great after you're gone and your desk is cleaned off.  War Eagle!

What's Jon Tenuta doing?

If it is true, then I'm getting a little sick and tired of Texas poaching our DCs. First,Chizik in 2004 and now Muschamp? I guess it's nice to have others want what you have.

I don't think it makes a lot of sense, though. Being a Georgia alum, I think Muschamp's heart is in the SEC. I would think he'd be more interested in a SEC HC position than anywhere else, especially if his alma mater was available in a few years. Hell, he even interviewed for the GA Tech job.

I think it'll be a few more years before Muschamp is ready to be a HC. But if he thinks there's more opportunity in Austin, then go for it. We'll go look for like our 6th DC in the last 8 years, or something like that.

Is Jon Tenuta still happy at Tech, or has anyone heard he took another position?

War Eagle Atlanta.....

Tenuta (spelling?) is not going to be retained by Paul Johnson and is currently unemployed and I share your desire to see him considered on the plains should this all end in Muschamp leaving for Texas. But I still hold out some hope that Muschamp is staying on the plains for a championship run next season. Still holding my breath.......

Todd

Yea, I guess Tenuta is in limbo right now.  I really thought that someone would offer him a HC position.  If we got him, it would probably only be a matter of time before someone tapped him for that job somewhere.

I've heard Ed Orgeron's name thrown out a few times.  I guess he never was a DC anywhere, but he was a defensive coach.  I think it might be kinda fun to have the crazy Cajun running around the sidelines.

Done deal....Muschamp Bolts foe Texas

Much like you other guys, I just don't see this move making a whole lot of sense for Muschamp. Texas is nothing more than a revolving door for DC's, and play in an inferior conference. Sure, they are media darlings. Heck, it's always a 2-team race for the Big 12 championship. Oklahoma one year, Texas the next. Whoever wins the Red River Shootout usually sits in the driver seat for the championship and BCS berth.

Meanwhile, Auburn is playing in the toughest college football conference where almost any team can beat the cream of the crop on any given Saturday. But if you coach up a defense like Muschamp has for the past 2 years, you "should" earn more respect for your accomplishments. With so much talent returning for Auburn's 2008 defense, why jump into the uncertainty?

I do see similarities to the Chizik situation, and wonder what reasons prompted Muschamp to jump ship for Texas. Maybe Tubs didn't campaign enough for Muschamp to land a great HC job. Not that I blame Tubs if he didn't, but I wonder why Muschamp would leave such a great situation. As for Chizik, he lucked up in joining a loaded Longhorns team and was able to help win the NC in 2005. But does anyone remember his 2006 Longhorn defense? They lost to Oklahoma, A&M & Kansas State. Only impressive enough to land the Iowa State HC job.

I wish Muschamp well, sort of, but would also have a hard time welcoming him back for anything due to how he is leaving us. Regardless, I do believe Coach Tubs will find a worthy replacement who will keep our defense strong. With the returning talent and the same defensive philosophy, our D should be fine. WDE!
