2008 Recruiting Stunk for AU

Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 12:48:59 PM EDT

Sorry, guys. Tubs and company blew it, and what we have been hearing for a year is true. Tuberville cannot recruit against Saban. And, to make matters worse, we lost key players to the likes of South Florida, North Carolina, and Ole Miss. Don't give me crap about Tuberville getting players who fit in his system. He lost all 7 head-to-heads against Alabama, and had to settle for a 2-Star LB from Northview High here in Dothan. So, I will say this. Tubs, you'd damn well better beat Bama while you can. We have a leg up on them in experienced talent for now, but no for much longer.

Answer me this....How does a school that has posted the 5th best record in DIV I over the last 5 years look so inept in recruiting?

War Eagle anyway

Yes, Alabama's class is great. Yes, Auburn's doesn't appear to be as good. One difference is that Saban could pitch immediate Playing Time, whereas Auburn is completely deep everywhere but linebacker. A lot of recruits are ME ME ME and want time... they aren't idiots. They see our depth chart, and they are scared off. (see Enrique Davis.)
A lot of hype is surrounding Saban which can only help Bama's recruiting, and hurt ours. There isn't any reason to be worried, unless this becomes a trend. I doubt that. Also, it sounds like Tubby is looking at more than straight football skills. read his remarks on Phillip Marshall's site.
And, since when is a top-20 recruiting class inept?

Okay, when I said inept, I was referring to the instate recruiting and head-to-head with Alabama. We didn't sway anyone. In addition, we had more decommits than I ever remember us having. Why did Quinn and Davis say they were coming to Auburn, and then the next morning go elsewhere? There are questions that need to be answered. And, YES, inept would be the word to describe the last four weeks of recruiting.

    Thanks

ArieGold, I understand the need to be concerned about this, but I don't think there's reason to think all is falling apart.

Auburn Fans, we can thank our AD Jacobs, Trustees, and even Tuberville for this little recruiting debacle. It's all about cause and effect, and the loss of both coordinators in December along with the rollercoaster ride we all were taken during the Tuberville negotiations had a dramatic effect on this year's recruiting class. Make no mistake, there is still a cloud of uncertainty hovering over our football program and don't you think the opposing coaches used that to their advantage.

As for Bama, congrats on your big signing day...but signing a top 5 class doesn't guarantee you delusional Tide fans an Iron Bowl win. It's all about developing those athletes into team players that contribute to the overall defensive or offensive system. No bragging unless you break Auburn's Iron Bowl streak.

Anyways, I have my issues with Tuberville, but I also know he's proven himself as an efficient recruiter who can develop the talent he has (2 star or 4 star) into a winning team. I will give Tubs the benefit of the doubt because of his track record and the young talent we already have in this Auburn program.

I'm looking forward to our future, and hopefully this crop of talent will have several hidden gems much like other Auburn classes have had. I still believe we have a bright future, AU fans. War Eagle!!!

  • So true bro (none / 0)

Bama really kicked our ass this recruiting season. Im afraid this is the end of our reign. Hey it was good while it lasted.

And another thing.....alligators are so ornery because of their enlarged medula oblongata.

We are far from beaten unless you got pictures of the trophy the bammers recieved for their great recruiting class and the declaration from AU that our football program will be replaced with the "Bass Fishing" team. The plain fact is we have been winning more than our share of Iron Bowls for 27 years now and that has been with worse recruiting than we have had under Tubby's watch especially this year. This year was noticable for the loss of one recruit to "Ole Miss" (might start as a freshman) and not getting Antoine McClain or Derrell Harris the rest we were either not in real contention and a lot of "extra" effort was not put forth towards. The others that jumped, Fortson and Baker, woulda been great but the wide reciever and defensive back class was anything but weak. We are not hurting at depth on the O-line but are now a little thin at linebacker. We will most likely be looking at as many as 6 or maybe even 7 linebacker signees next year as a result of the lack of linebackers this year. Defensive line class? Solid. running backs? More solid than necessary.

Get a grip folks don't give up your seats just yet. A top twenty class is solid and with the talent that has been accrued over the last 4 years along with this one we are still loaded for bear (even if the SOB has been dead for 25 years).
