Nostalgia Friday: 1955 Auburn vs. Georgia Tech

We are reaching way back in the vault today to find this classic. It’s from the 1955 Auburn-Georgia Tech game played in Atlanta. Tech came into the contest ranked fifth nationally and would go on to make a Sugar Bowl appearance.
Auburn was a big underdog and entered the contest ranked 17th. Auburn pulled the upset on this day, coming away with a 14-12 win over the Yellow Jackets. These old clips are great.

Just missed...
.....By five years. My dad had finished at UAT, and was in dental school in Birmingham, that year. My mother was a junior at Birmingham Southern, having just transferred from Auburn.
.....Had to love that old straight-T, power football, though! War Eagle!

5 years?
Being in the crowd, or being old enough to drink? Probably the former...
Jay: We wanted the 1987 Tech game as the Friday Nostaglia Game of the Week! :-)

We Need One
...with the complete last 3 minutes of the game, which not only includes Tilman, Tilman, Tilman, but the Rick Strom scramble and eventual interception to Aundray Bruce.
I looked recently on youtube, and a precursory glance reveiled a video with the former, but not the latter.
May be hard, because that game was not televised originally...

I am just glad I'm old enough.....
to have participated in a wreck tech parade. I wish that rivalry would renew on a yearly basis, a lot of tradition is lost.

My first wreck Tech experience...
.....wasn't so great. We were returning home after a delightful 49-7 blowout over Vandy. And... we absolutely STUNK IT UP, something Barfield teams did from time to time, and lost 10-24, at home. It would be Tech's last win over us, till the Tuberville era.
.....1979 was better. I was out of the band with a broken foot, but we road tripped up to Grant Field and cheered the team on. I watched in horror as a rain of whiskey and beer bottles rained down on the team and band, before the game. Tech paid the price, though, as we nailed a 38-14 whipping on them!
.....1980 was Auburn's worst SEC showing in my lifetime. We were suspect, flailing, lost, and grasping for answers. We were coming back home after blowing it against LSU in Death Valley. Fortunately for us, Pepper Rogers was gone, Bill Curry was in, and we eeeked out a 17-14 win over the Techsters at home. Whew! Bill Curry NEVER beat Auburn!

My First Tech Game
..was 1985, when I road tripped it solo, staying with a friend on the Tech campus in his two-man dorm room that was the size of my current closet.
We were late getting into Grant Field. Sitting in the Tech student section, I was sure not to wear any partisan clothing. Being 17 years old and having never been to an away game, much less sitting in the opponent's section, I made nary a sound.
Luckily, Bo Jackson made all the noise we needed, single-handily taking over that game and winning it for us. The Techsters weren't much in a mood to party that night!
I looked on youtube again yesterday for highlights of the 1987 game. I found one that had more than just Tilman, Tilman, Tilman, but it didn't have the highlights in the correct order. It also didn't utilize the Jim Fyffe calls, but had a soundtrack seemingly compiled from Disney, NFL Films, and 70s pornos...
Yea, Todd. You know you're Old School if you've seen a Wreck-Tech pajama parade!
